On Wednesday, Pakistan closed the main border crossing with Afghanistan after border guards from the two sides exchanged fire in a sign of increasing tensions between the two nations. Reasons why the two sides exchanged fire were not immediately made clear. Molly Gambhir gets you a report.

Gravitas: Pakistan Closes Vital Border Crossing with Afghanistan

Afghanistan suffered a heartbreak in Asia Cup 2023 as they failed to qualify for the Super Four stage after losing to Sri Lanka by the narrowest of margins. It was, however, Afghanistan team dugout and somewhat officials' mistake that the Asian minnows couldn't qualify for the next stage.

Chasing 292, the Afghans needed to score those runs in 37.1 overs to beat Sri Lanka on net run rate. Sri Lanka, however, rocked Afghanistan early as they brought them three down for 50 runs. Rahmat Shah (45), skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi (59) and Mohammad Nabi (65 off 32) then brought Afghans back in the game.

The match was poised perfectly with Afghans needing 16 runs off the next 10 balls, but Kasun Rajitha sent Najibullah Zadran back on the fourth ball of the 36th over to tilt the game in Lankan's favour. Rashid Khan (27 not out off 16) then kept his team in the game with 12 runs off the next over's last three balls.

With three runs needed on the first ball of the 38th over, Mujeeb holed out and Rashid sank to his knees, thinking the game was over, but only it wasn't. Afghanistan still had a chance to win and qualify by reaching 293 after 37.2 overs, 294 after 37.3, 295 after 37.5, 296 after 38 overs, or 297 after 38.1.

The last batsman, Fazalhaq Farooqi, seemed to have no knowledge of this just like Rashid Khan. Farooqui blocked the first ball he faced - a juicy full-toss, he defended the next one before getting out on the fourth ball of the 38th over as Afghanistan lost by two runs.

Speaking on the situation after the match, Afghan coach Jonathan Trott admitted that they didn't have the knowledge of those equations.

"We were never communicated those calculations," he said. "All we were communicated was we needed to win in 37.1 overs. We weren't told what the overs in which we could get 295 or 297. [That we could win in] 38.1 overs was never communicated to us."

Nonetheless, Afghanistan will rue this rare chance as they miss out on the Super Four berth but they can take pride in putting up a show for their fans in the stadium and fans back home.

There is no end to the nightmare for women in the Taliban's latest clampdown against Afghan women. Female students have been barred from leaving the country to study in the UAE. According to reports the Taliban-led regime stopped close to 60 young Afghan women from travelling to Dubai to pursue higher education.

Afghanistan: Taliban stops female students travelling to University of Dubai

Taliban officials prevented a group of ambitious female students from boarding a flight to Dubai where they were about to accept fully-funded scholarships to pursue university studies, in keeping with their long-standing ban on education for women and girls.

Mirwais Balkhi, a former Afghan education minister who fled his homeland two years ago in the wake of the Taliban's takeover, now lives in the United States. In the West, he and his friends, who also escaped Afghanistan in 2021, now grapple with depression. Is China planning to set up a surveillance network in Afghanistan? Huawei has reportedly agreed to install CCTVs across the country. What will the cameras be used for? Molly Gambhir reports.

Gravitas: Is China planning to set up a surveillance network in Afghanistan?

Concerns have been raised that Beijing is moving closer to profiling Afghans in order to strengthen its influence in the nation after Chinese telecom firm Huawei received orders from the highest echelons of the Haqqani Network in Afghanistan to deploy CCTV cameras throughout provinces.

China seeks to profile Afghanistan citizens?

Just two years after the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan, humanitarian assistance needs across the country have increased dramatically. Hem Kaur Saroya brings you the report on how insufficient funding is expanding the humanitarian response and putting parts of the afghan population in need of support at risk.

Prolonged drought deepens Afghanistan's humanitarian crisis

In the face of a humanitarian crisis and urgent appeals from UN agencies, India has reaffirmed its commitment to providing essential assistance to the Afghan people with practical support on the ground. The Indian government sent the country 47,500 metric tonnes of wheat and 200 tonnes of medical aid along with assistance for drug addicts in the country.

Recognising the gravity of the situation, India's collaboration with the United Nations World Food Programme (UNWFP) has facilitated the internal distribution of wheat throughout Afghanistan. This partnership has ensured the successful delivery of wheat in the form of aid to UNWFP centres within Afghanistan, with shipments making their way through the Chabahar Port in Iran and reaching their destination at Herat.

UNWFP expressed its profound gratitude to India and other donors for their invaluable support. A recent tweet by UNWFP highlighted that "for the first half of this year, 16 million people in Afghanistan received life-saving food from WFP. We are grateful for generous donors like India who make that happen."

In the past, India has sent assistance overland Pakistan, but that has been marked by delays due to Islamabad's reluctance to give early passage. Medical assistance is also a cornerstone of India's aid efforts. Approximately 200 tonnes of medical supplies, including essential medicines, COVID-19 vaccines, anti-TB medicines, and various medical and surgical items, were dispatched to the Indira Gandhi Children's Hospital in Kabul.

Furthermore, India's partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC) underscores its focus on addressing the challenges faced by the Afghan population when it comes to the impact of drugs. This partnership aims to provide much-needed humanitarian assistance to female drug users in Afghanistan. The contribution includes 1,100 units of female hygiene kits, blankets, and medical supplies. These items are destined for UNODC's female drug rehabilitation camps across the nation, contributing to the comprehensive rehabilitation of those in need.

India's assistance extends beyond immediate relief efforts. Winter clothing and stationery items have been provided to the primary students of the Habibia School in Kabul, reflecting India's commitment to the long-term welfare and education of Afghan children. While India doesn't recognise the Taliban regime in the country, it has a "technical team" in Kabul that was sent in 2022 to oversee the delivery of humanitarian assistance. 'Nothing allowed for them': Afghan women demand education rights in UN appeal

Two years after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, the US has begun to soften regulations, potentially enabling commercial aircraft to fly over the country on routes that minimise travel time and fuel consumption for East-West traffic.

US to allow flights over Afghanistan?

It's been two years since the Taliban took over Afghanistan and nearly twenty years of hard-fought progress in women's rights has been virtually erased. Women in the country have been wholly excluded from education, livelihood and public office. Today, Afghanistan’s women and girls are required to adhere to not only a strict dress code, they are not permitted to step outside their homes. Mohammed Saleh brings you a comprehensive report on the current situation on the ground.

Gravitas: 20 years of progress for women erased in 2 years of Taliban rule

On the occasion of the second anniversary of their return to power, the Taliban leaders in Afghanistan said that after the "conquest of Kabul" on August 15, 2021, now no one stands a chance to potentially invade again.

"The conquest of Kabul proved once again that no one can control the proud nation of Afghanistan and guarantee their stay in this country," a statement by the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan said.

"No invader will be allowed to threaten the independence and freedom of Afghanistan."

Taliban anniversary celebrations come against the backdrop of a complex political landscape in Afghanistan. The group's return to power sparked both international concerns and domestic uncertainties about the implications for human rights, security, and stability.

"On the second anniversary of the conquest of Kabul, we would like to congratulate the mujahid (holy warrior) nation of Afghanistan and ask them to thank Almighty Allah for this great victory," the spokesman for the Taliban, Zabihullah Mujahid, said in a statement.

The capital witnessed heightened security measures on Tuesday, which had been designated a holiday, with increased military inspections.

Throughout the day, there were anticipated Taliban processions, and various governmental departments including the ministry of education held gatherings to commemorate the event.

"No invader will be allowed to threaten the independence and freedom of Afghanistan." Taliban anniversary celebrations come against the backdrop of a complex political landscape in Afghanistan. The group's return to power sparked both international concerns and domestic uncertainties about the implications for human rights, security, and stability. The capital witnessed heightened security measures on Tuesday, which had been designated a holiday, with increased military inspections. Throughout the day, there were anticipated Taliban processions, and various governmental departments including the ministry of education held gatherings to commemorate the event. Mujahid said, "Now that overall security is ensured in the country, the entire territory of the country is managed under a single leadership, an Islamic system is in place and everything is explained from the angle of sharia." In the past two years, United Nations has reported numerous attacks on civilians, some of which have been claimed by the Taliban's rivals, the Islamic State. 'No invader will be allowed': Taliban celebrate two-year 'conquest' of Kabul

Two years since the Taliban stormed back to power in Afghanistan after 20 years of war against the United States and its allies, life has changed dramatically for many Afghans, particularly women.

Ahead of the August 15 anniversary of the fall of Kabul, four Afghans -- a businesswoman determined to keep her factory open, a farmer relieved by the war's end, a former Taliban fighter proud to serve the new government and a medical student forced to give up her studies -- told AFP how the changes have impacted them.

The entrepreneur working to keep her business afloat

Arezo Osmani was "terrified and sad" when the Taliban returned to power, promising the imposition of a stringent interpretation of Islam that has seen women barred from many avenues for work and education.

"I didn't leave my room for 10 days, I thought that everything was over for me, and that it was the same for all Afghans," said Osmani, 30, who started a company producing reusable sanitary pads in 2021.

"But when I went out and saw that people were still going about their lives, it gave me hope and I told myself that I had to stay here too," she said.

She shuttered her business, which had employed 80 women at its peak, amid the uncertainty that gripped the country in the wake of the Taliban takeover.

But she reopened its doors two months later as it was one of the few remaining places "where women could work".

Under the Taliban, women have been pushed out of most NGO and government jobs. Last month, beauty parlours -- another key source of income for women breadwinners -- were also shut down.

"We slowly adjusted to the conditions, and fortunately, as we are a company and work in the health sector, we were able to continue our work, I feel good now," she said.

But a reduction in NGO activity in the country under Taliban authorities has hit her business hard, she said. She still employs 35 women, but buyers are scarce.

"At the moment, we have no contracts, no buyers... if we are not able to sell the pads, it will be difficult to continue the work, but we are trying to stay on our feet," said the mother-of-two.

Despite the challenges, she is determined to do what she can for her country, its women in particular.

"Afghanistan and our society need people like us who stay," she said.

The farmer trying to make ends meet

Rahatullah Azizi is grateful for the improved security that has come with the end of the fighting. Now, as the 35-year-old tends his small farm in Parwan province, north of Kabul, he can "move around day and night without worries, thank God".

"There's been a lot of change" since August 2021. "Before it was war, now it's calm."

As a result of the armed conflict, around 38,000 civilians were killed and over 70,000 wounded between 2009 and 2020 alone, according to an annual report by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

However, the father-of-two is still weighed down by worry.

Afghanistan's economy, already battered by decades of war, has been mired in crisis after billions of dollars in international aid were cut following the Taliban government's takeover.

Economic output has collapsed and nearly 85 percent of the country lives in poverty, according to the latest report from the UN Development Programme. Drought and locusts have also plagued the country's crops.

"People don't buy much of our produce any more," said Azizi, who farms just over one hectare of rented land.

"I used to sell seven kilos of tomatoes (15 pounds) for 200 afghanis ($2), but now I only sell that for 80 afghanis."

He used to earn an income from cereal crops, he said, but no longer.

"I now have just enough to eat, I can't put any money aside," added the farmer, who holds out hope he can send his children to university to get the education he never had.

The Talib fighter-turned-policeman

For 23-year-old Lal Muhammad, the return of the Taliban to power has brought more economic stability.

He joined the group four years ago when membership meant being a rebel fighter regularly away from home.

Now, he is a police officer in the country's second-largest city, Kandahar, and earning a salary of around 12,000 afghanis ($142) per month -- "enough" for his family.

He's happy to have a regular wage, but said he "didn't dream of having cars or making money".

"My dream was to study and serve in the Islamic Emirate government. I'll stick with it till the end," said Muhammad, using the Taliban authorities' name for the government.

"Thank God they're back."

The Taliban movement, birthed in Kandahar in southern Afghanistan, controlled the country from 1996 to 2001.

"We are very happy. We don't have any problems, there is no war and no fighting," he said. "We are serving the Emirate and our people."

The ex-medical student searching for a new future

Hamasah Bawar once envisioned her future in Afghanistan in the medical field. Since the Taliban took over and barred women from universities, she only sees hope outside the country.

"The closure of universities was devastating, not only for me but all my classmates. We are broken and it's the worst thing we could have imagined happening to us, but it happened," said the 20-year-old resident of Mazar-e-Sharif in northern Afghanistan.

"If a girl is educated, her whole family will be educated, if a family is educated, the whole society will be educated... If we are not educated a whole generation will be left illiterate," said the young woman, who had won an internship at a clinic quickly closed down under the Taliban government.

"Because I want a better future, for my education, I have no other choice but to leave Afghanistan."

Bawar said there was "a big difference" between the previous US-backed government and that of the Taliban, which has not been recognised by the international community.

"There used to be a lot of freedom, today we can't even go to the Blue Mosque (a famed shrine surrounded by gardens) for enjoyment... Most activities are banned for girls and women now."

Bawar's mother is a teacher at a primary school, the level at which girls' education now stops.

"It's not only what I want, all the girls and women of Afghanistan want their freedom back."

UN asks Taliban to reverse its course on treatment of Afghan women

Two years have passed since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan on August 15, 2021, a sad day for many in the country. This period has witnessed significant changes in various aspects of Afghan society, be it governance or economy, or international relations.

The Taliban's takeover prompted a reevaluation of Afghanistan's standing on the global stage, with nations deliberating on diplomatic recognition and their respective approaches to engagement. Regional players, like India, also sought to navigate their positions, considering potential impacts on security dynamics and the broader stability of the South Asian region.

On the second anniversary of the Taliban's seizure of power, the world reflects on the multifaceted changes that have taken place within Afghanistan. While the full extent of these changes continues to unfold, one thing remains certain: the events of these past two years have left an indelible mark on Afghan society, politics, and its position in the global arena.

End of America's 20-year war

The withdrawal of US forces, ending the 20-year-old war, brought about challenges and criticism. The chaotic manner in which the withdrawal was executed raised questions about the US handling of the situation.

In their previous reign during the late 1990s, the Taliban were known for conducting public executions, floggings, and stoning as punishments for individuals found guilty of crimes in Taliban courts.

Taliban 2.0, initially presented themselves as more moderate compared to their previous rule. However, their unmatched actions and decisions have sparked controversy and challenges on both domestic and international fronts, with no certainty as to what the future holds for Afghanistan.

Women's rights under attack

One of the most notable and controversial aspects of the Taliban has been the exclusion of Afghan girls and women from various aspects of public life. A series of bans were imposed, preventing women from accessing higher education, employment, beauty salons and parks.

The rationale behind these bans is the Taliban's commitment to their interpretation of Sharia law.

These restrictions have been met with widespread condemnation from the international community, causing the Taliban to face challenges in gaining international recognition and access to foreign aid.

In December of the past year, the Taliban enforced a ban on women accessing campuses, which sparked widespread global outrage.

Prior to that, girls were prohibited from attending school beyond the sixth grade, an order that came shortly after the Taliban reclaimed authority in August 2021. Afghanistan is reportedly the sole nation with such restrictions on female education.

Economic challenges

The Taliban have faced economic challenges due to the withdrawal of foreign aid and international sanctions. The majority of Afghanistan's budget had been supported by international donors, but with the Taliban taking over, aid was suspended, leading to a financial crisis.

The Taliban have engaged in talks with neighbouring countries, such as China and Kazakhstan, to secure investments and the release of frozen funds. However, the international community has linked economic cooperation to improvements in women's rights and other human rights issues, creating difficulties for the Taliban leadership.

Taliban's supreme leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada, holds significant influence over decision-making, including the implementation of gender restrictions. Akhundzada's decisions are final.

International recognition

The Taliban have sought international recognition as the legitimate government of Afghanistan, but this has been met with challenges due to concerns about their human rights record and commitments. While the Taliban leadership has engaged in diplomatic interactions with various countries, including powerful states like China and Russia, formal recognition has been elusive.

End of America's 20-year war The withdrawal of US forces, ending the 20-year-old war, brought about challenges and criticism. The chaotic manner in which the withdrawal was executed raised questions about the US handling of the situation. Taliban 2.0, initially presented themselves as more moderate compared to their previous rule. However, their unmatched actions and decisions have sparked controversy and challenges on both domestic and international fronts, with no certainty as to what the future holds for Afghanistan. Women's rights under attack One of the most notable and controversial aspects of the Taliban has been the exclusion of Afghan girls and women from various aspects of public life. Economic challenges The Taliban have faced economic challenges due to the withdrawal of foreign aid and international sanctions. International recognition The Taliban have sought international recognition as the legitimate government of Afghanistan, but this has been met with challenges due to concerns about their human rights record and commitments. While the Taliban leadership has engaged in diplomatic interactions with various countries, including powerful states like China and Russia, formal recognition has been elusive.
Afghan booksellers continue to suffer amid Taliban's continuous onslaught against modern education with targeted actions against women's education rights. A recent assessment by a commission to address issues faced by booksellers in Afghanistan has revealed that nearly 30 per cent of booksellers in Afghanistan have ceased their operations due to lack of a thriving market.

Abdul Wodod Mukhtarzada, a commission member, told Tolo News that in addition to the challenging market conditions, booksellers have also raised concerns about the burden of high taxes, which have become increasingly difficult to manage given the decline in their business.

Mukhtarzada highlighted, "We used to sell over 500 books and had a robust presence of 200 librarians. However, these numbers have dwindled significantly."

Numerous booksellers have expressed worry over the fading culture of book reading in Afghanistan.

Sharifullah, a bookseller, pointed out, "The absence of female students in universities is a contributing factor to the issues. This absence also impacts the book trade."

Mansour Qazizada, another bookseller, told Tolo News that the market has slowed down, and people lack the means to purchase books. He also mentioned the various taxes that booksellers are required to pay.

Qazizada elaborated, "As you are aware, the market is struggling, and people lack the financial capacity to buy books. Moreover, the presence of multiple types of taxes, along with representatives from the Kabul municipality, adds to our challenges."

Meanwhile, Taliban-led Ministry of Information and Culture claimed it will reduce the tax burden on libraries.

"We are working towards exempting taxes on books to encourage a tradition of reading. We have organised several exhibitions for this purpose," Deputy Minister Mahajar Farahi was quoted as saying by Tolo News.

Recently, a group of young individuals in Kabul organised the "Smart Way" book exhibition to boost the reading culture in Afghanistan.

Through such initiatives, the youth aimed to inspire residents, especially their peers, to engage in literature, amid the strict educational limitations imposed by the Taliban on young girls and women in Afghanistan.

One of the organisers, Sharifa Hesar told Tolo News: "We organised this exhibition to cultivate a reading culture among the youth. Books serve as a form of entertainment for them."

However, these numbers have dwindled significantly." Numerous booksellers have expressed worry over the fading culture of book reading in Afghanistan. Sharifullah, a bookseller, pointed out, "The absence of female students in universities is a contributing factor to the issues. This absence also impacts the book trade." Mansour Qazizada, another bookseller, told Tolo News that the market has slowed down, and people lack the means to purchase books. He also mentioned the various taxes that booksellers are required to pay. Qazizada elaborated, "As you are aware, the market is struggling, and people lack the financial capacity to buy books. Moreover, the presence of multiple types of taxes, along with representatives from the Kabul municipality, adds to our challenges." Meanwhile, Taliban-led Ministry of Information and Culture claimed it will reduce the tax burden on libraries. "We are working towards exempting taxes on books to encourage a tradition of reading. We have organised several exhibitions for this purpose," Deputy Minister Mahajar Farahi was quoted as saying by Tolo News.
