Fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq has officially retired from ODI cricket following the culmination of Afghanistan's journey at the ongoing World Cup in India. The team concluded its World Cup campaign with a five-wicket loss against South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday (Nov 11).&nbsp;

Following the match, Naveen took to his social media handles to post a farewell message and acknowledge the well-wishers.&nbsp;

"I have worn this jersey with immense pride from my first game till my last game today thanks for all the messages and wishes from everyone," wrote Naveen in his Instagram story.&nbsp;

Despite not picking up any wickets against the Proteas,&nbsp;Naveen's final hurrah has been nothing short of a fairytale. The giant-killing Afghans thrashed&nbsp;England, Pakistan Sri Lanka and Netherlands&nbsp;while coming perilously close to upstaging five-time world champions Australia. Throughout the tournament, Naveen remained a pivotal part of the squad, delivering crucial breakthroughs.&nbsp;

<h2>Naveen's retirement announcement&nbsp;</h2>

The right-arm pacer, surprising the cricketing world, announced days before the start of the World Cup that he will be retiring following the conclusion of the quadrennial event.&nbsp;Naveen said the decision wasn’t an easy one but one he had to take to prolong his playing career.

"It has been an absolute honour to represent my country, and I would like to announce my retirement from the ODI format at the end of this World Cup and will continue to wear this blue jersey in T20 cricket for my country," Naveen wrote in his post.

After retiring from the 50-over format, Naveen would only represent the Afghan side in the T20 format while plying his trade in franchise cricket around the globe.&nbsp;

Lately, more and more cricketers are giving up playing the long formats of the game to travel to different countries and play franchise cricket. The main reason is the monetary benefit as a cricketer's career is short-lived and unless hefty central contracts are offered, most have to rely on cricket leagues to survive.&nbsp;

In what can lead to a greater war of words between the Taliban regime in Afghanistan and the Government of Pakistan, Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said on Wednesday (Nov&nbsp;8) that Pakistan should stop blaming Afghanistan for its own failures. Pakistan has in the past, provided active support to the Taliban and their terror activities but tensions are high now as Pakistan is attempting to expel hundreds of thousands of undocumented Afghans from the country. Pakistan has accused the Taliban regime of 'non-cooperation' in the matter and recent words from Pakistan's caretaker Prime Minister Anwar ul Haq Kakar have drawn a strong reaction from the Taliban regime.

Farmers in Afghanistan have lost an income of more than $1 billion from the sale of opium after the Taliban banned poppy cultivation, a report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said on Sunday (Nov 5).

Farmers in Afghanistan have lost an income of more than $1 billion from the sale of opium after the Taliban banned poppy cultivation, a report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said on Sunday (Nov 5). As per the report, opium cultivation fell throughout Afghanistan to just 10,800 hectares this year from 233,000 hectares in 2022, slashing supply by 95% to 333 tons. The UNODC said that this sharp decline was putting pressure on farmers, and it could have major consequences for the economy in a country where around two-thirds of the population is already in need of humanitarian aid. The UN agency also warned of "humanitarian consequences for many vulnerable rural communities" due to the sudden contraction of the opium economy, as growers turned to far less lucrative alternative crops such as wheat. 'Afghanistan in dire need of strong investment' In a statement, UNODC's Executive Director Ghada Waly said that Afghans need urgent humanitarian assistance to meet their most immediate needs, absorb the shock of lost income, and save lives. "Over the coming months Afghanistan is in dire need of strong investment in sustainable livelihoods to provide Afghan farmers with opportunities away from opium," Waly said. "This presents a real opportunity to build towards long-term results against the illicit opium market and the damage it causes both locally and globally," she added. Afghanistan world's biggest opium producer before Taliban takeover Before the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in 2021, the country had been the biggest opium producer globally and a major source of heroin in Europe and Asia. Taliban imposed a ban on opium poppy cultivation in April last year, dealing a heavy blow to hundreds of thousands of farmers and day labourers who relied on proceeds from the crop to survive. In its report, the UNODC also said that a huge contraction in the supply of opium from Afghanistan could eventually lead to a drop in its use internationally, but it also risked escalating the global use of alternatives such as fentanyl or synthetic opioids. Another report from the UN drugs agency in September said that Afghanistan was the world’s fastest-growing maker of methamphetamine, with seizures of the synthetic drug increasing as poppy cultivation shrank.

ODI WC: Afghanistan chase history with S/F berth a realistic possibility

Bulldozers demolish the mud homes of Afghan refugees in Islamabad as Pakistani authorities say they have ordered 1.7 million people to leave voluntarily or risk deportation because they are in the country illegally.

Pakistan refugee crisis: Bulldozer razes homes of Afghan refugees in Pakistan

Pakistan has taken a contentious decision to deport millions of Afghan refugees as the deadline to voluntarily leave has expired. What's behind Pakistan's expulsion of the 'undocumented' migrants? In this report, we delve into Islamabad's justifications for its move and the potential human rights concerns it raises.

Gravitas: Has Pakistan's deportation plan flopped? Deadline ends, Afghan refugees detained

Pakistan has begun a nationwide crackdown on undocumented immigrants, potentially impacting nearly two million people, particularly Afghan nationals residing in the country.

This decision has led to tens of thousands of Afghan migrants attempting to leave Pakistan, fearing arrest or forced expulsion.

The move comes as Pakistan's Interior Ministry announced that all foreign nationals living in the country without legal status had 28 days to leave voluntarily or face deportation.

November 1 was set as the last day for undocumented immigrants to leave Pakistan.&nbsp;

<h2>Targeted measures and growing exodus</h2>

In response to this announcement, there has been a surge of Afghan refugees heading towards the border crossings, desperately seeking to repatriate to Afghanistan and evade potential deportation.

This exodus has been particularly notable in Karachi's Sohrab Goth area, one of Pakistan's largest Afghan settlements.

Here, a bus service operator told Reuters that he had increased the frequency of services to cope with the escalating departures.

Prior to this announcement, he operated only one bus per week, but now, the demand has surged, requiring four to five buses per week.

<h2>What are the reasons behind the forced exodus</h2>

The decision to crack down on undocumented immigrants, particularly Afghan nationals, is multifaceted.

Pakistan has faced an upsurge in terror attacks, with the government linking a significant number of these attacks to Afghan nationals.

The rising number of terrorist incidents prompted the Pakistani government to address the issue. The interior ministry issued the ultimatum for all undocumented migrants to leave voluntarily or face deportation.

Pakistan has reported a total of 24 suicide attacks in the country since the beginning of the year, with 14 of these attacks being attributed to Afghan nationals.

Data from the South Asian Terrorism Portal reveals that the country has experienced 418 terror attacks in the current year, an increase from the previous year's total of 365 attacks.

This rising threat has raised concerns about Pakistan's security.

Additionally, the Pakistani government has accused the Taliban government in Afghanistan of providing safe haven to militant groups responsible for these attacks.

The Pakistani Taliban (TTP), in particular, has been cited as an organization that enjoys the Taliban's support in Afghanistan. This situation has led to strained relations between Pakistan and the Afghan government.

<h2>Economic challenges and job displacement&nbsp;</h2>

While security concerns have driven the crackdown, Pakistan is also grappling with its most severe economic crisis.

The country is experiencing soaring inflation, with rates reaching as high as 31.4 per cent, leading to a significant increase in the cost of essential goods and food items.

In this context, many Pakistanis believe that Afghan nationals are taking away job opportunities, exacerbating unemployment and economic hardships.

Pakistan hopes that by deporting nearly two million Afghan nationals, it can alleviate unemployment and provide a boost to the country's economy.

This measure is part of Pakistan's broader strategy to address its economic challenges and political objectives, with the deportation of Afghan nationals serving as both a security and economic move.

Some experts also suggest that Pakistan's action aims to exert pressure on the Afghan government in Kabul, seeking to compel it to meet certain demands and take measures to contain the activities of militant groups that pose a threat to Pakistan's security.

<h2>How has the Taliban responded?</h2>

The Taliban government in Afghanistan has expressed its discontent with Pakistan's decision to deport Afghan nationals, deeming it "unacceptable."

The Taliban government has asserted that Afghan refugees have no involvement in Pakistan's security problems and should be tolerated.

The deportation of Afghan nationals has added complexity to the already intricate relationship between Pakistan and the Taliban government in Afghanistan.

Internationally, this move has drawn concern from human rights organisations and the United Nations.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has warned that the deportation policy could trigger a "human rights catastrophe."

Other human rights watchdogs have criticised Pakistan's decision to force asylum-seekers to leave, particularly given the dire circumstances in Afghanistan.

Many Afghan asylum seekers include former government employees, activists, journalists, and others who face threats, torture, and detention by the Taliban in Afghanistan.

<h2>Future of Pakistan's deportation policy</h2>

Pakistan has reiterated its commitment to implementing the deportation policy, despite international and domestic criticism.

The government has established deportation centers across the country, indicating its determination to detain and repatriate Afghan nationals.

In addition to arresting foreigners without proper documentation, authorities plan to move them to temporary centers where they will receive basic necessities such as medical care and accommodation.

The deportation of illegal foreign nationals will occur in phases, with individuals lacking travel documents facing deportation in the initial phase.

Pakistan's government has defended its actions, asserting that they align with international norms and principles and are in compliance with the country's sovereign domestic laws.

The expulsion threat as per reports came after suicide bombings this year, which the South Asian nation's government said involved Afghans. However, Pakistan did not provide any evidence for the allegation. Islamabad has also blamed Afghan citizens for smuggling and other militant attacks in the nation.

As per the Taliban's data, between Sept 23 to Oct 22, some 60,000 Afghans have returned from Pakistan.&nbsp;

Recent daily returnee figures to Afghanistan, as per a Reuters report quoting Taliban refugee ministry spokesman Abdul Mutaleb Haqqani, are three times higher than normal.

"Thousands of Afghan refugees are waiting for their turn in vehicles, lorries, and trucks, and the number continues to grow," said Irshad Mohmand, a senior government official at the Torkham border, while talking to AFP.

"More than 10,000 refugees have gathered since morning."

<h2>Harassment or not</h2>

Afghanistan's Taliban government, as per AFP, has said that Pakistan's policy amounts to "harassment".

However, in a statement, Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said that the expulsion plan was compliant with international norms and principles.

"Our record of the last forty years in hosting millions of our Afghan brothers and sisters speaks for itself," said Baloch.

<h2>Leaving 'home'</h2>

Talking to Reuters, an undocumented Pakistan-born Afghan national who is married to a Pakistani woman said: "We'd live here our whole life if they didn't send us back."

Over four million Afghans have made Pakistan their home, and about 1.7 million of them, according to Islamabad, are undocumented. While many of them sought refuge in Pakistan after the 2021 Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, a large number have been present since the 1979 Soviet invasion.

The Islamic State jihadist group claimed on its Telegram channel Friday that it was behind a blast at a sports club that killed four people in the Afghan capital the night before.

The Sunni Muslim extremist group said it had used a parcel bomb that "IS fighters placed in a room where Shiites gather".

The explosion occurred Thursday evening at a commercial centre in the Dasht-e-Barchi neighbourhood of Kabul, an enclave of the historically oppressed Shiite Hazara community, according to police.

Police were still investigating the cause of the explosion, Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran said on Friday afternoon in a message to reporters.&nbsp;

He added that seven people were injured in the blast, revising the initial toll of two dead and nine injured.&nbsp;

The explosion ripped through a sports club several floors up in the commercial centre, blowing out all the sides of the space and shattering windows and causing damage throughout the block, AFP journalists saw on Friday.

An instructor at the club, which holds training in combat sports, told AFP the blast happened at the end of a busy boxing session that usually hosted some 30 people. &nbsp;

"The explosion was extraordinarily strong. The walls fell, the metal doors, glass and windows were broken", said 26-year-old Sultan Ali Amiri, who was not in the club when the blast occurred. "There has been a lot of damage, punching bags and almost everything is destroyed."

AFP journalists saw several heavy bags used for combat sport training on the floor of the club, others still hanging and pocked with fragments from the blast.

Afghanistan: At least two killed, nine injured after blast in predominantly Shiite Kabul neighbourhood

Former Pakistan cricketer Kamran Akmal has lashed out at former India cricketer Irfan Pathan for dancing after Pakistan's loss against Afghanistan in the ODI World Cup 2023. Afghanistan had beaten Pakistan by eight wickets on October 23 for the first time in ODIs and for their second win in the ongoing quadrennial tournament.

“I was surprised at Irfan Pathan dance,” Kamran Akmal told Pakistan-based media outlet Ary News. “I remember India beating Pakistan in Australia; even then this kind of happiness wasn’t seen. But there seems to be greater joy in Afghanistan defeating Pakistan. It was sad to see – not just for me but for nation. The broadcasters should think about that this – neutral commentators shouldn’t do this.”

Afghanistan had already beaten defending champions England in the tournament and the win against Pakistan was even more convincing. Chasing 282, Afghanistan batters showed nerves of steel as they didn't give fearsome bowlers Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf any chance.

While the game went to the final over, the Afghans won the game by eight wickets - a testimony to their grit and determination to perform better in the quadrennial tournament.

There's been a lot of criticism for the Pakistan players after the loss and many former players including Shahid Afridi have criticised skipper Babar Azam.

"It is the captain's job to apply pressure, a pacer is bowling and there is no slip? Four are required on 12 balls and you've taken backward point? Apply pressure. What do the Australians do? They take one to two wickets and then put all of their players in the circle to apply pressure, like they did against Pakistan,” said Afridi according to a local sports show. &nbsp;
