Everyone was left shocked when nominations for the Academy Awards were announced, and one of the strong contenders of this year's award season Greta Gerwig's Barbie was absent from the major categories. The Academy has formally apologised to Native American actress and activist Sacheen Littlefeather after nearly 50 years of her mistreatment at the 1973 Academy Awards, in which she was booed away after a speech in one of the most controversial moments in the history of Oscars. Littlefeather was present at the event on behalf of actor Marlon Brando, who was going to be awarded the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in 'The Godfather'. Brando, Littlefeather said in her speech, was declining the award for the treatment of "American Indians today by the film industry."

Her full speech read, "Hello. My name is Sacheen Littlefeather. I'm Apache and I am president of the National Native American Affirmative Image Committee. I'm representing Marlon Brando this evening and he has asked me to tell you in a very long speech, which I cannot share with you presently because of time but I will be glad to share with the press afterwards, that he very regretfully cannot accept this very generous award. And the reasons for this being are the treatment of American Indians today by the film industry – excuse me – and on television in movie reruns, and also with recent happenings at Wounded Knee. I beg at this time that I have not intruded upon this evening and that we will in the future, our hearts and our understandings will meet with love and generosity. The emotional burden you have lived through and the cost to your own career in our industry are irreparable. For too long the courage you showed has been unacknowledged. For this, we offer both our deepest apologies and our sincere admiration.”

Fleischman won an Oscar for Scorsese's Hugo and was also nominated for Jonathan Demme's 'Silence of the Lambs', Warren Beatty's 'Reds' and Scorsese`s 'The Aviator' and 'Gangs of New York'. He also serves on the board of directors of the Cinema Audio Society, reports Variety.

The news of Fleischman's resignation comes after the Oscar curtailed television plans have been severely criticized by members and the associated guilds. For the unversed, in February this year, the Academy announced its decision to present several Oscar categories outside of the live March 27 telecast via a letter from Academy president David Rubin sent to Academy membership.

Leadership has started creating and identifying programming which will help in an acceleration of the Black membership within the Academy.Veteran music professionals like John Legend, Honorary Chairs Jeffrey Harleston, Debra Lee, Jimmy Jam, Quincy Jones, Sylvia Rhone, will join hands to elevate the mission of the collective.

He also stated that opening an office in India is an "excellent idea".

"We have an office in London and in New York. India is the largest film-making country in the world. India makes up to 1,800 movies a year, which is more than four numbers of times that we make (Hollywood) in the US. It's an excellent idea... Mumbai would be such a strong connection to all of South-East Asia. It makes a lot of sense," Bailey, who is in India along with his wife Carol Littleton, told media here.

"The Academy is not a company or a corporation... The reason to have an office anywhere is based upon the services the Academy can provide to the membership. So, the key to having an office in Mumbai or in India would be to being able to service the members and the community and expand the outreach. Last year, the Academy accepted 928 new members from 56 countries... The Academy is not just a Hollywood bubble," he added.

Talking about the Academy museum, he said, "The Academy museum is going to open early next year. We hoped that it would open by the end of this year, but due to various events we have decided to open it in March or April probably."

He added, "I am very proud to be here as the first President of the Academy to visit India. Carol and I come from the ground level of film-making... We bring a perspective and an understanding of the film-making process."

Asked about representation India cinema abroad, Bailey said, "I think that they need a much broader distribution in large parts of the world. I know there are Indian films they continue to show at Cannes and in Venice. But it`s very hard certainly in Europe and the US for these films to get much of the exhibition in the theatres... It`s such a rich tradition. Most of us only know Indian cinema today from a very limited perspective of musical and dance films of Bollywood, but there is so much more. There are ways to do it."
