A Delhi court Thursday sent senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh to the custody of the Enforcement Directorate for five days, a day after the anti-money laundering agency arrested him in the Delhi excise policy case.

Special Judge M K Nagpal remanded Singh in ED custody till Oct. 10 to enable the federal probe agency to interrogate him.

The AAP Rajya Sabha MP will be produced before the court on the expiry of his custody.

While being brought to the courtroom, Singh said his arrest was “an act of injustice” by Prime Minister Narendra Modi whose party was “going to lose the next Lok Sabha elections”.

Singh was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday in connection with its money laundering probe linked to the 2021-22 Delhi Excise policy case, in a huge blow to the city's ruling Aam Aadmi Party.

"This is Modiji's injustice. He will lose the election, he is losing the election," he told journalists.

Later, when the court asked him whether he wanted to say something, Singh claimed he was being treated unfairly.

“Sir, Amit Arora gave tens of statements, Dinesh Arora gave several statements, but they did not remember my name. I'm not so unknown that they forgot my name. Now they have suddenly remembered… There's no separate law. I was not summoned even once. Why different law for me?” the AAP leader said rebutting the ED's claim he received Rs 2 crore from Dinesh Arora, a businessman accused in the case who has now turned an approver.

During the hearing, the ED sought Singh's custody saying several people were yet to be examined and confronted with him. The agency said it also wanted to confront Singh with data extracted from his phone.

The Enforcement Directorate alleged Singh received Rs 3 crore in two tranches.

“The money was delivered to his residence. Dinesh Arora cross-checked with him also and he confirmed it… An investigation has revealed that two crore cash was given. A total of three crore money was given,” the ED said.

When the agency said it wanted to confront Singh with digital evidence extracted from his mobile phone, the court told its counsel it could be done even without taking him into custody.

“Why do you want to confront him with the phone? You can extract the data even otherwise,” the judge said.

Senior advocate Mohit Mathur, representing Singh, opposed the ED's application seeking his remand, saying the agency's witness Dinesh Arora was not trustworthy.

“He was an accused first, then in a quid pro quo he turned witness. His stand is changing. The Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, on Thursday (Oct 5), flocked to Rajghat, Mahatma Gandhi's memorial, and held a prayer meeting for the "liberation" of people from the "corrupt" AAP government in the city.

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva stated that their party's struggle to liberate people from the clutches of the "corrupt" AAP government headed by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will continue.

He claimed that Kejriwal was the "kingpin" of the alleged liquor scam in Delhi further reiterating Mahatma Gandhi's teachings who said alcohol destroys both the body and the soul.

"Kejriwal has not only destroyed the soul but also the entire Aam Aadmi Party," Sachdeva said, launching an attack on the AAP National Convener and the Delhi Chief Minister.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has been hitting out at the Kejriwal government since Wednesday (Oct 4), after AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a Delhi excise policy-related case.

ED arrests AAP leader Sanjay Singh in Delhi govt's alleged excise policy corruption case

The Enforcement Directorate arrested AAP MP Sanjay Singh. ED carried out raids at his house in connection with a money laundering case linked to the Delhi excise policy.

ED arrests AAP MP Sanjay Singh In Delhi Excise Policy Case

India's law enforcement agency Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted a search at the residence of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh as part of a money laundering investigation connected to the controversial Delhi liquor policy case.

ED officials arrived at the Delhi home of the Rajya Sabha MP early morning on Wednesday (Oct 4). The case revolves around the excise policy of the Delhi government in 2021, which was subsequently revoked. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also faced nearly nine hours of questioning in April as part of the investigation.

In February, former deputy chief minister of the AAP government in Delhi, Manish Sisodia, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the same case but he has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

Connections with businessman Dinesh Arora

Businessman Dinesh Arora, an approver in the case, alleged that Sanjay Singh introduced him to Manish Sisodia. The former Delhi deputy CM was the excise minister at the time.

Singh has already responded to the allegations. Earlier in May, he wrote a letter to Finance Secretary TV Somanathan, claiming that the ED director and assistant director had wrongly linked his name to the alleged liquor scam, damaging his public image and reputation.

He demanded the prosecution of these officers and had already sent a legal notice to them for an open and public apology for defaming him.

According to ED sources cited by ANI news agency, Sanjay Singh's name appeared four times in the ED's charge sheet, with one wrong reference where his name was mentioned instead of Rahul Singh, who was the then excise commissioner.

Importantly, Singh was never named as an accused by the ED, which has filed three charge sheets in the case. He was neither summoned nor had his statement recorded in connection with the case, despite references to him in the chargesheets.

Allegations of corruption in liquor policy

The CBI alleged that liquor companies were involved in shaping the excise policy, which would have resulted in a 12 per cent profit for these firms. The agency claims that a liquor lobby, referred to as the "South Group," paid kickbacks in this matter.

Of the proposed 12 per cent profit, six per cent was allegedly funnelled to public servants through intermediaries.

The ED is actively investigating the alleged laundering of these kickbacks, which has raised significant concerns about corruption within the Delhi liquor policy.

Politicians have been trading barbs over the alleged scam. Following the scrapping of the excise policy, the BJP accused the Delhi government of reverting to the old liquor policy to conceal corruption.

India's law enforcement agency Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted a search at the residence of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh as part of a money laundering investigation connected to the controversial Delhi liquor policy case.

Connections with businessman Dinesh Arora Businessman Dinesh Arora, an approver in the case, alleged that Sanjay Singh introduced him to Manish Sisodia. Also Read | India: Cloudburst triggers flash floods in Sikkim, 23 army personnel missing He demanded the prosecution of these officers and had already sent a legal notice to them for an open and public apology for defaming him. Allegations of corruption in liquor policy The CBI alleged that liquor companies were involved in shaping the excise policy, which would have resulted in a 12 per cent profit for these firms. The agency claims that a liquor lobby, referred to as the "South Group," paid kickbacks in this matter. Also Read | India urges oil producers for 'sensitivity' as prices near $90: Report Of the proposed 12 per cent profit, six per cent was allegedly funnelled to public servants through intermediaries. The ED is actively investigating the alleged laundering of these kickbacks, which has raised significant concerns about corruption within the Delhi liquor policy. E-learning platform Unacademy fired its educator Karan Sangwan after he appealed to the students to vote for a literate person in the upcoming elections and not put the ones who are only "changing names” in positions of power.

Apparently, Sangwan, L.L.M Criminal Laws, was having a discussion on the latest bill that was tabled in Lok Sabha by the Centre government to replace IPC, CrPC and Indian Evidence Act.

He was reportedly complaining that all the notes that he had prepared during his course of education had gone to waste.

He then said, “Even I don't know whether to laugh or cry because I also have a lot of bare acts, caseloads, and notes that I had prepared. It is hard work for everyone. You also got a job at your hand.”

“But keep in mind one thing. Next time vote for someone who is well-educated so you don't have to go through this (ordeal) again. Ok,” he added.

He then specified to his students to not elect someone who only knows how to change names.

Aam Aadmi Party supremo and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal reacted to the sacking of Sangwan by the Edtech company questioning if it was such a big offence for someone to ask people to vote for literate people.

India: Aam Aadmi Party MP Raghav Chadha suspended from Rajya Sabha on signature forgery allegations

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former deputy chief minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia did not get relief in the two Delhi excise policy cases against him on Friday (August 4). The Supreme Court of India deferred hearing on his interim bail pleas to September 4. The cases against Sisodia are being probed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and SVN Bhatti perused the medical records of Sisodia's wife, and said she is "fairly stable" and, therefore, it will consider the interim bail pleas of former deputy chief minister along with regular bail pleas in the cases.

Sisodia has sought interim bail on grounds of his wife's ill health.

On July 14, the Supreme Court had sought responses of CBI and ED on the interim bail pleas of Sisodia.

The CBI arrested Manish Sisodia on February 26 under allegations of 'scam'. He handled excise portfolio among many as deputy chief minister of Delhi. He is in custody since his arrest in February. He resigned from the Delhi cabinet on February 28.

Previous denials of bail

He was denied bail in the CBI case by the high court on May 30. The court said that since he was deputy chief minister and excise minister, he was a "high profile" person and could potentially influence the witnesses.

The high court denied bail to Sisodia in the money laundering case on July 3. The case is linked to alleged irregularities in the city government's excise policy. While denying the bail, the court said that the charges against him were "very serious in nature".

In its May 30 order, the high court had said since Sisodia was at the "helm of affairs" when the alleged scam took place, he cannot say he had no role to play.

The high court had stated that with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) still in power in Delhi, Sisodia had influence. The court also said that since the witnesses were mostly public servants, the possibility of Sisodia influencing them couldn't be ruled out.

According to the two federal investigative agencies, irregularities were committed while modifying the excise policy and undue favours were extended to licence holders.

The Delhi government implemented the policy on November 17, 2021, but scrapped it at the end of September 2022 amid allegations of corruption.

The Aam Aadmi Party has repeatedly alleged that the government machinery is being misused against Sisodia.

Previous denials of bail He was denied bail in the CBI case by the high court on May 30. Also Read | Manipur violence: Cop killed, armoury looted in separate incidents in Indian state In its May 30 order, the high court had said since Sisodia was at the "helm of affairs" when the alleged scam took place, he cannot say he had no role to play. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) parliamentarian Sanjay Singh was on Monday (July 24) suspended from the Indian parliament's upper house Rajya Sabha for the remainder of the monsoon session for "repeatedly violating directions of the Chair."

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar first called out Sanjay Singh for interrupting the proceedings of the House when it had taken up the Question Hour amidst demonstrations by the Opposition over its demand for a statement from Prime Minister on the violence in Manipur and an in-detail discussion on the issue.

After the house resumed proceedings at 12 noon, Singh came near the Chairman’s podium over opposition demands. Dhankar asked him to return to his seat. However, the AAP member kept protesting, and the Chairman named him.

Soon after the Chairman named Sanjay Singh, Leader of the House Piyush Goyal moved a motion demanding the Chair to suspend the AAP member, saying this kind of behaviour “is completely against the ethics and rules of the House.”

“Sanjay Singh should be suspended from the entire session of the House,” he said.

The Chairman then put the motion for approval of the House and said Sanjay Singh was being suspended for the remainder of the monsoon session of Parliament "for having repeatedly violated the directives of the Chair". The Chairman then adjourned the House till 2 pm.

Last week, Dhankhar had cautioned Sanjay Singh saying that he will be forced to name him after he repeatedly demonstrated against the proposed bill to replace the Centre's ordinance for control over services in the national capital, Delhi.

His warning to Singh came after the AAP members were urged to take their seats as he briefed the House about the proceedings of the Business Advisory Committee.

AAP was among the opposition parties who demanded a statement from PM Modi in Parliament on the ongoing situation in Manipur and also an in detail discussion on the issue.

Dhankhar said he had received 27 notices under Rule 267. TMC leader Derek O’Brien sought to raise the demands of opposition parties. The Chairman cautioned him and adjourned the House till 12 noon.

India: AAP Rajyasabha MP Sanjay Singh suspended for rest of monsoon session; here's why

The Delhi High Court dismissed the bail petition of Delhi's former Deputy Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party leader Manish Sisodia who was arrested earlier this year by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case related to alleged irregularities in the Delhi government's excise policy.

The Court also rejected bail petitions of Vijay Nair, former communicator in charge of Aam Aadmi Party, Hyderabad-based businessman Abhishek Boinpally and Binoy Babu Binoy, (manager with a liquor company Pernod Ricard) in connection with the same case.

While refusing to grant relief to the AAP leader, the bench of Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma said that the court does not find any illegality in the trial court order that had dismissed his bail.

"The petitioner (Sisodia) is not entitled to bail and the petition is accordingly dismissed," it said.

"The possibility of tampering with evidence and influencing witnesses cannot be ruled out and Section 45 twin condition isn't satisfied. Bail Denied," said the court.

Sisodia was first arrested by the CBI in the month of February for his alleged role in the scam and has been in custody since then.

He resigned from his position following the arrest, terming the accusations against him as 'false' and said it was unfortunate that he was framed despite working honestly for the last eight years.

"It is unfortunate that despite working with honesty and truthfulness continuously for eight years, corruption charges are being levelled against me. I and my God know that all these allegations are false," Sisodia said in his resignation letter to Arvind Kejriwal.

"These allegations are in fact nothing more than a conspiracy of cowardly and weak people who are scared of Arvind Kejriwal's politics of truth. I am not their target, you [Kejriwal] are their target. Because today not only Delhi but the people of the whole country are seeing you as a leader who has a vision for the country and the ability to bring big changes in the lives of the people by implementing it," he added.

The high court already denied bail to him in the CBI case in the month of May. On June 2, the court had reserved its order on his bail plea. Sisodia has sought bail on grounds including his wife's deteriorating health condition.

The ED has opposed the bail plea of the ex-deputy CM as well as of the others accused.

What is the excise policy scam?

The AAP government had brought in the excise policy to revolutionise the sale of liquor in Delhi by bringing in more private players. The rationale given was that the new policy will help generate optimum revenue while eradicating bootlegging and the sale of spurious liquor.

However, corruption in the distribution of permits, bribery and fraud in the funnelling of tender amounts meant that the initiative collapsed within a year.

It has been alleged that AAP leaders formulated the policy at the peak of the pandemic to create illegal channels of funding.

Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi has been called by the CBI on Sunday (April 16) for questioning over alleged corruption in the capital's now-scrapped alcohol sales policy. Manish Sisodia, an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former deputy chief minister of Delhi, is currently in jail in connection with the same case, and law enforcement authorities have made other arrests.

An order from the Goa Police for Kejriwal to appear for questioning on April 27 in connection with an alleged defacement of public property has also been issued.

Even though the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been asserting that Kejriwal was the brains behind the alleged scam, this is the first time the CBI has summoned the chief minister in the investigation, reported the Hindustan Times.

The conspiracy hatched by you to arrest, jail and take action against Arvind Kejriwal on 16th April will not stifle his voice.”

Anticipating the scale of protests, the Delhi police has tightened security in-and-around the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) headquarters on the Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Marg. "I am told that most CBI officers were against Manish's arrest. All of them have huge respect for him and there is no evidence against him. But the political pressure to arrest him was so high that they had to obey their political masters," tweeted Kejriwal. Sisodia was arrested by the CBI after nine hours of questioning on Sunday for alleged corruption in the excise policy of the national capital, which has now been scrapped. The AAP government had brought in the excise policy to revolutionise the sale of liquor in Delhi by bringing in more private players. The rationale given was that the new policy will help generate optimum revenue while eradicating bootlegging and sale of spurious liquor. However, corruption in the distribution of permits, bribery and fraud in the funneling of tender amounts meant that the initiative collapsed within a year. It has been alleged that AAP leaders formulated the policy at the peak of pandemic to create illegal channels of funding. Gujarat Assembly Election Results 2022: Full list of AAP winner candidates

BJP Chief Ministerial candidate Bhupendra Patel, the incumbent Gujarat CM, won from Ghatlodia after edging out Congress candidate Dr. Amee Yajnik by more than 50,000 votes. Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel said that the results of the Gujarat Elections are quite clear and people have made up their minds to further continue with the journey of development in Gujarat. The Chief Minister said that he humbly accepted the mandate of the people and every worker of the BJP is committed to public service.

State BJP Chief CR Patil said Gujarat CM will take oath at 2pm on 12 December. He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah will take part in the oath ceremony. The Election Commission's most recent reports show that Patel received 80.86% of the vote, compared to Amiben Yagnik of the Congress, who received 9.81%. Vijay Patel, an AAP candidate, was placed third with 6.73 per cent of the vote.

Moreover, after registering a major win, BJP's Jamnagar North candidate, Rivaba Jadeja thanked those who accepted her as a candidate, reached out and connected to people. "It's not just my victory but of all of us," she said. Cricketer Ravindra Jadeja's wife, BJP's Rivaba Jadeja, was fielded from here replacing sitting MLA Dharmendrasinh Jadeja (Hakubha).

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) entered the election arena this time, making Gujarat's election a three-cornered race rather than the state's usual struggle between the BJP and Congress. 624 independents and a total of 70 political parties participated in the election. 101 candidates from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and 26 from the Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP) ran against the main competitors BJP, Congress, and AAP.

Here are the other star candidates to watch out for

1. AAP's Isudan Gadhvi, Chief Ministerial face: Gadhvi was picked after a popular choice of AAP. AAP's Alpesh Kathirya won party's first seat while CM face Isudan Gadhvi lost. Gadhvi had said earlier this week that it is difficult to predict results through exit polls but BJP won't form the government. He said the AAP win will over 51 seats in phase 1 and over 52 in phase 2 and exit polls will be proved wrong. Gadhvi opined that lotus is no longer as powerful as it was once and is declining in the state. While casting his vote, he had said: "I expect AAP to win 51+ of 89 seats in first phase and 52+ in second."

2. AAP Gujarat president Gopal Italia: Italia is contesting from the Katargam in the Surat district. The poll performance of both leaders is being keenly watched with the AAP having held an extensive campaign in the state. Even as Gadhvi had predicted a win for his party in more than 100 of 182 seats in the state, AAP managed to win just five seats.

3. Hardik Patel: BJP leader and Patidar quota stir leader Hardik Patel won against Congress' Lakha Bharwad - who is the sitting MLA from the constituency. He earlier said that no riots/terrorist attacks took place in the past 20 yrs. He said that people know BJP met their expectations. "They press 'Lotus' as their future will be safe under BJP. It did good governance and strengthened this trust," he added.

Exit polls: Exit polls had predicted a huge mandate for the BJP in the state. This will be seventh term for the party in Gujarat. Early trends on Thursday were in line with predictions for the AAP too.

Gujarat Elections Results 2022: Bhupendra Patel to take oath as CM, Rivaba Jadeja wins with big margin

Sanjay Singh, an AAP Rajya Sabha MP, is not holding back from acknowledging that his party has attained "national party status." The BJP is undoubtedly going to win the Gujarat Assembly Elections in 2022. However, he claimed that they became a national party in just ten short years. He also expressed his gratitude to the Gujarati people. According to the most recent results, BJP has won 131 seats and is in the lead in 25, while AAP won 4 seats and is in the lead in just one of the 182 constituencies.

What is the Election Commission of India's criteria to declare a party as a national party?

The requirements for a party to be recognised as a national party have been established by the ECI. Depending on how often these requirements are met, a party may occasionally earn or lose national party status.

What constitutes a National Party?

A national party is the one that is present "nationally," as opposed to a regional party, which is only present in a single state or area. The larger parties in India are often national parties, such the Congress and BJP. Some lesser-known parties, such as the communist parties, are still acknowledged as national parties. Being a national party is sometimes linked with a particular stature, although this does not always imply having significant political influence at the national level.

According to the Election Commission of India, a political party would be considered a national party if it is "recognised" in four or more states; if its candidates received at least 6% of all valid votes cast in any four or more states during the most recent Lok Sabha or Assembly elections; if it had at least four MPs in the most recent Lok Sabha elections; or if it has won at least 2% of the total seats in the Lok Sabha from not less than three states.

AAP in Gujarat Election Results 2022 and its rise as a National Party

In Delhi and Punjab, the AAP has strong majorities and significant vote shares. Additionally, it earned 6.77 percent of the vote in the March elections for the Goa Assembly. This meant that the party had already met the requirements for recognition as a state party in three states going into the Gujarat-Himachal elections. To be recognised in a fourth state and become eligible for recognition as a national party, it now needed 6% of the vote in the Assembly elections in either Gujarat or Himachal.

India: As Delhi witnesses 'very poor' AQI, politicians trade barbs over rise in stubble burning

Deputy chief minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia's house was raided by CBI officials besides several other locations on Friday in an alleged case of corruption. Sisodia tweeted that he would fully cooperate with CBI and said, “It is unfortunate that those who do good work in our country are harassed like this. That is why our country has not yet become No 1.”

Chief minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal also tweeted and extending support to his deputy, said, "Nothing will come out of this raid and many such happened in past."

As reported by the Hindustan Times, the CBI conducted raids at 21 locations in Delhi and surrounding areas on Friday, including one at Sisodia and an IAS officer's home.

CBI raids Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia's residence

On June 26, the results of the byelections for three Lok Sabha seats and seven assembly seats in five states, including Delhi, were announced.

Simranjit Singh Mann of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) won the byelection in Sangrur, the constituency of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections, by a margin of more than 5,000 votes.

And in the nation's capital, Durgesh Pathak of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won the Rajinder Nagar byelection by more than 11,000 votes.

AAP performed very poorly in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections, when it won no parliamentary constituencies, despite its victories in the assembly elections in 2015 and 2020.

Questions are now being raised about whether AAP can claim to be a national party given that it is the only regional party to have offices in two states, as many as Congress. Its influence and ambition are expanding. But will it translate into votes, given that AAP has never been able to gain traction in Lok Sabha elections?

In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, AAP won only one of the more than 40 seats it ran for across nine states and union territories. It fielded candidates in Delhi, Chandigarh, Bihar, Goa, Punjab, Andaman and Nicobar, Haryana, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh. However, only Bhagwant Mann, a contender from Sangrur in Punjab, had a chance of winning. And on June 26, AAP lost the by-election for that seat as well.

In an open letter to volunteers after the 2019 defeat, Arvind Kejriwal, the maverick leader of AAP and Delhi chief minister, had said, "Ground study following the election has identified two key causes. The atmosphere that pervaded the nation first affected Delhi as well. Second, voters perceived this "big election" to be a contest between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi."

It implies that Kejriwal has never had a compelling platform for the national election. Voters never imagined that Modi and Kejriwal would be competing in this. In 2014, Modi defeated Kejriwal by a large margin of 337,000 votes to win the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat.

Is AAP capable of filling the void left by Congress?

The AAP did very well in the last three Delhi elections and then won Punjab by capitalising on the farmer movement. There is a chance that AAP might succeed the Congress as the main opposition party in India.

Despite its stability, India has struggled to create economic growth and jobs, end hunger, malnutrition, and poverty, as well as to ensure gender parity, good urban governance, and a reduction in social stratification, among other things.

Such failures offer a remarkably wide range of opportunities for reforms that address these pressing issues and so build new voter bases for a party.

However, the current parties, particularly the Congress, did not present a different paradigm.

The AAP fills this void by proposing an alternative system of government that lowers living expenses and raises the disposable incomes of the average person through welfare reforms.

However, in order to penetrate the ruling party's support base, AAP needs a robust organisational structure throughout the nation. Elections for the Lok Sabha will take place in 2024. If they truly want to be a national party and the dominant opposition in national politics, they must begin the preparatory process in full force.

In the initial years, AAP was dismissed as a Delhi-only party, meaning it would not grow in the rest of India. But it has managed to take control of Punjab, one of the biggest states. Now the question is, will AAP remain a north Indian party?

The next elections would be a litmus test to answer that question.

Opinion | Victories in states but losses in the Lok Sabha. Can India's AAP go national on its own?

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday stormed to power in Punjab decimating several heavyweight leaders to the top. One of the most high-profile contests was in Patiala (Urban) where former Congress chief minister Amarinder Singh was in the fray, this time in alliance with the BJP.

However, the Maharaja of Patiala was trumped by AAP’s Ajit Pal Singh Kohli by nearly 20,000 votes. While Kohli bagged 48,104 votes, Amarinder could garner only 28,231 votes. SAD’s Harpal Juneja stood a distant third with 11,835 votes, and Congress’s Vishnu Sharma could secure a mere 9,871 votes.

“I accept the verdict of the people with all humility. Punjabis have shown true spirit of Punjabiyat by rising and voting above sectarian and caste lines,” Capt Amarinder Singh tweeted soon after the results indicated a landslide victory for the Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab.

In 2017, Amarinder – fighting on a Congress ticket – had defeated AAP’s Balbir Singh by 52,407 votes, which was over 49 per cent of the total votes polled in the constituency. In fact, Amarinder has won the constituency four times.
