After 23 years of the attacks, NASA released a letter written by Frank Culbertson, dated September 12, 2001. He wrote, "Well, obviously the world changed today. What I say or do is very minor compared to the significance of what happened to our country today when it was attacked by.... by whom? Terrorists are all we know, I guess. Hard to know at whom to direct our anger and fear..."&nbsp;His letter briefly explained his experience of seeing his country under one of the biggest attacks of all time that killed more than 3,000 people. He wrote, "It's difficult to describe how it feels to be the only American completely off the planet at a time such as this. The feeling that I should be there with all of you, dealing with this, helping in some way, is overwhelming.”&nbsp;

While they were orbiting over New York, he captured video of the smoke, which he described as having an ‘odd bloom’ at its base. Later, he learned that the pilot of the plane that hit the Pentagon was his friend, Captain Charles Burlingame.

US defense chief says 9/11 mastermind and other defendants should stand trial

Three men accused of plotting the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks have entered into a pre-trial agreement, the US Department of Defence said.

The three accused, Khalid Sheikh Mohammad, Walid Muhammad Salih Mubarak Bin Attash, and Mustafa Ahmed Adam al-Hawsawi have been held at the US Navy base Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for years without going to trial.

According to the US news agency reports, the men will plead guilty in exchange for the prosecution's agreement not to pursue the death penalty. The terms of the plea deal have not yet been released.

It may be recalled here that nearly 3,000 people in New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania were killed in the al-Qaeda attacks, which sparked the War on Terror and the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.

The attacks were the deadliest on US soil since Pearl Harbor, which claimed 2,400 lives in 1941.

The prosecutors notified the victims' families of the plea deal in a letter, according to The New York Times.

"In exchange for the elimination of the death penalty as a possible punishment, these three accused have agreed to plead guilty to all of the charged offences, including the murder of the 2,976 people listed in the charge sheet," said the letter from the chief prosecutor Rear Admiral Aaron Rugh.

The men have been accused of a litany of charges, including attacking civilians, murder in violation of the laws of war, hijacking and terrorism.

As per a report in Times, they are expected to formally submit their pleas in court as early as next week.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammad&nbsp;is believed to be the architect of the attack, in which hijackers seized passenger planes and crashed them into the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon outside of Washington.

Mohammad, who was an educated engineer from the US, was captured with Hawsawi in Pakistan in March 2003.

Prosecutors claimed he pitched the idea of hijacking planes to crash into US buildings to Osama bin Laden and later helped recruit and train the hijackers.

In September, the Biden administration reportedly rejected the terms of a plea.

The White House National Security Council said that the president's office was informed on Wednesday (Jul&nbsp;31) of the new deal and had played no role in negotiations.

However, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell condemned the move, he said, "The only thing worse than negotiating with terrorists is negotiating with them after they are in custody."

Three men accused of plotting the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks have entered into a pre-trial agreement, the US Department of Defence said. The three accused, Khalid Sheikh Mohammad, Walid Muhammad Salih Mubarak Bin Attash, and Mustafa Ahmed Adam al-Hawsawi have been held at the US Navy base Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for years without going to trial.

The terms of the plea deal have not yet been released. It may be recalled here that nearly 3,000 people in New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania were killed in the al-Qaeda attacks, which sparked the War on Terror and the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. The attacks were the deadliest on US soil since Pearl Harbor, which claimed 2,400 lives in 1941. The prosecutors notified the victims' families of the plea deal in a letter, according to The New York Times. "In exchange for the elimination of the death penalty as a possible punishment, these three accused have agreed to plead guilty to all of the charged offences, including the murder of the 2,976 people listed in the charge sheet," said the letter from the chief prosecutor Rear Admiral Aaron Rugh. As per a report in Times, they are expected to formally submit their pleas in court as early as next week. Khalid Sheikh Mohammad is believed to be the architect of the attack, in which hijackers seized passenger planes and crashed them into the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon outside of Washington. Mohammad, who was an educated engineer from the US, was captured with Hawsawi in Pakistan in March 2003. The White House National Security Council said that the president's office was informed on Wednesday (Jul 31) of the new deal and had played no role in negotiations. However, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell condemned the move, he said, "The only thing worse than negotiating with terrorists is negotiating with them after they are in custody." His legal counsel has consistently maintained that their client was subjected to torture by the CIA, alleging that he suffered immensely during his captivity.

A crucial factor in this decision is the assessment conducted by a medical board of doctors, who determined that al-Shibh's mental state had deteriorated to the point of delusion and psychosis.

This assessment, which was reported to the trial judge in late August, concluded that al-Shibh was incapable of comprehending the nature of the legal proceedings against him or cooperating intelligently in his defence, reported the BBC.&nbsp;

Consequently, al-Shibh has been removed from the proceedings, while the other four defendants, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, believed to be the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, are expected to proceed with their trial as scheduled.

A total of 2,753 people lost their lives when al-Qaeda operatives crashed two hijacked civilian passenger airliners into New York's Twin Towers. The total number of lives claimed by the day's terror attack as per the news agency was 2,977.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams in a statement released late Friday said: "We hope these new identifications can bring some measure of comfort to the families of these victims, and the ongoing efforts by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner attest to the city’s unwavering commitment to reunite all the World Trade Center victims with their loved ones."

<h2>How were the remains identified?</h2>

As per the news agency report, the two victims were identified through the use of "next-generation sequencing technology — more sensitive and rapid than conventional DNA techniques." Their remains were collected years ago.

Before this, the last two 9/11 attack victim identifications were made about two years back, in 2021. To date, 1,104 victims remain unidentified, and the progress in establishing their identities has been agonizingly slow.

“I think it is legitimate to say how many police, how many federal agents, were on the planes that hit the Twin Towers. Maybe the answer is zero. It probably is zero for all I know, right? I have no reason to think it was anything other than zero. But if we’re doing a comprehensive assessment of what happened on 9/11, we have a 9/11 commission, absolutely that should be an answer the public knows the answer to.

"Well, if we’re doing a January 6 commission, absolutely, those should be questions that we should get to the bottom of,” he said. “‘Here are the people who were armed. Here are the people who are unarmed.’ What percentage of the people who were armed were federal law-enforcement officers? I think it was probably high, actually. Right?"&nbsp;Ramaswamy said.&nbsp;

When he was asked about why he spoke of police and federal agents under that light, Ramaswamy said, “Oh yeah, I don’t think they belong in the same conversation,” he said.

“I think it’s a ridiculous comparison. But I brought it up only because it was invoked as a basis for the January 6 commission.”

The CNN fact check just made a short mention of how the quote was a bit different but it does not, in any way, can be labelled as a misquote.&nbsp;The only minor difference in the quote was an additional "Like, I think we want…".&nbsp;

Japanese respond with 9/11 memes in retaliation to 'insensitive' Barbenheimer memes

A judge in the United States ruled that the victims of the 9/11 attacks cannot claim $3.5 billion in assets that belong to Afghanistan's central bank. These funds, now claimed by Afghanistan's Taliban government, are frozen in different banking institutions in the United States. The judge reasoned that allowing this claim would be akin to legitimacy to Afghanistan's Taliban government.&nbsp;

Judge George Daniels said he was "constitutionally restrained" from approving access to the funds.

The suicide plane attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York on September 11, 2001, claimed about 3,000 lives while wounding several thousand. At the time of the attacks, the Taliban was ruling Afghanistan and had allowed al-Qaeda terrorists led by Osama bin Laden to operate from the territories under its administration.

The judge further reasoned that the Biden administration does not recognise the Taliban, which means that the US courts do not have the power to pass rulings in related matters.

"The judgment creditors are entitled to collect on their default judgments and be made whole for the worst terrorist attack in our nation's history, but they cannot do so with the funds of the central bank of Afghanistan," Judge Daniels wrote in his 30-page judgment.

"This decision deprives over 10,000 members of the 9/11 community of their right to collect compensation from the Taliban," said Lee Wolosky, a lawyer who argued for victims' compensation. "We believe it is wrongly decided and will appeal."
