Goals from Olmo, Torres help Barcelona down Las Palmas to reclaim La Liga lead

Russian 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva wrapped up a fairytale week in Dubai by becoming the youngest ever WTA 1000 champion with victory over Clara Tauson on Saturday.
After ousting three Grand Slam winners, including second-seeded Iga Swiatek, en route to the final, Andreeva ended Tauson's own dream run at the tournament with a 7-6 (7/1), 6-1 victory against the Dane.
It was a performance that didn't just earn Andreeva a maiden WTA 1000 trophy, but also secured her top-10 debut with the Russian expected to rise to number nine when the new rankings are released on Monday.
Tauson had been a giant-slayer herself this week, knocking out world number one Aryna Sabalenka on her way to the biggest final of her career.
The 22-year-old entered the clash with Andreeva leading the tour with 15 match-wins so far this season.
She was looking to add a second title to her tally in 2025, and fourth overall, but Andreeva had other ideas, as she overcame her big-hitting opponent in one hour and 46 minutes of all-court prowess.

In the youngest WTA 1000 final since the category was introduced in 2009, Andreeva played a near-perfect opening-set tiebreak to take the lead after 60 minutes of play.
She upped the ante in the second set, breaking twice for a 5-1 advantage and served out the win at the first time of asking.
On Monday, Andreeva will become the first 17-year-old to be ranked in the top 10 since Nicole Vaidisova in 2007.

Dubai Open: Mirra Andreeva becomes youngest WTA 1000 champion

Arsenal's Premier League title challenge suffered a massive blow as the 10-man Gunners were beaten 1-0 at home by lowly West Ham on Saturday.
Jarrod Bowen headed in the only goal just before half-time and an injury-hit Arsenal had no reply after Myles Lewis-Skelly was sent-off on 73 minutes.
Defeat leaves second-placed Arsenal still eight points adrift of leaders Liverpool.
The Reds can extend that advantage to 11 when they visit a diminished Manchester City on Sunday.
Any pressure that had built up on Liverpool after drawing two of their last three Premier League games was eased as Arsenal failed to cope with an injury crisis that has depleted Mikel Arteta's attacking options.
Midfielder Mikel Merino stepped up in the absence of Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka with a late double to beat Leicester 2-0 last weekend.
However, the Hammers easily snuffed out the Spaniard and secured just a second win since Graham Potter took charge seven games ago.
Bowen applied the finishing touch for the winner, but the goal owed more to a driving run and pinpoint cross from Aaron Wan-Bissaka which caught the Arsenal defence off guard on 44 minutes.
The home side then left themselves a mountain to climb with a fifth Premier League red card of the season.
Lewis-Skelly has received two of them. The teenager was also sent-off in last month's 1-0 win at Wolves.
That decision was overturned on appeal, but the left-back could have few complaints this time despite referee Craig Pawson initially only brandishing a yellow card after Lewis-Skelly hauled down Mohammed Kudus.

After a VAR review, Pawson upgraded the yellow to a red for denying of a clear goalscoring opportunity.
West Ham should have added to their lead late on when Kudus and Evan Ferguson failed to beat David Raya.
It did not matter as Arsenal's toothless attack could not break the visitors down in what may prove the death knell for their chances of a first league title since 2004.

Premier League: Arsenal's title hopes suffer blow after West Ham defeat

Chess has transformed from a niche interest to a national obsession in cricket-crazy India. The year 2024 marked a pivotal year, with D. Gukesh becoming the youngest World Chess Champion and India shining at the Chess Olympiad. Players like R. Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, and Koneru Humpy are now household names.
India now boasts 85 Grandmasters, a remarkable leap from just one—Vishwanathan Anand—in 1987.
Leading this chess revolution is MGD1, India’s first startup dedicated to nurturing the country’s brightest chess talent. In an exclusive interview with WION's Athira Sasidharan, co-founder Manu Gurtu reveals how it all began and what the future of Indian chess holds.

Question: How did the idea of investing in chess and creating the first chess management company come about?

It was during the pandemic that I got involved with the Indian chess team when they were playing the online Olympiad. With my background in tech, I was able to help the team with some technical issues they were facing when playing online. I was put in touch with the captain of the team GM Srinath Narayanan with whom I interacted throughout the pandemic.
He made me aware of the various problems that our players go through on a daily basis. One thing led to another. I roped in my co-founder who has a background in Marketing and branding. We registered this entity to make an honest attempt at solving some of the issues.

Question: What made you choose chess over other more widely known sports?

I have been following and playing chess since I was a child. Have always had an interest in the sport. That certainly plays a role. More than that though, other than cricket the only other sport India is truly excelling at is Chess. Our time is now. There are enough companies working on other sports. This is where we thought we needed to be.

Question: Can you share with us your journey in the chess industry? How has it evolved over time?

When I started out it was never really a plan to set up an entity and do this full-time. As time passed by I gravitated towards helping the athletes out in whatever way possible and making a sustainable difference in their lives. We have been very lucky to have been welcomed into the ecosystem by all the chess fraternity. We also think more outsiders with different perspectives should be entering this space. It will certainly bring the much-needed freshness into the sport.
Question: Since India's historic victory in the Olympiad, along with Gukesh becoming the youngest World Chess Champion and Arjun breaking the 2800 Elo rating mark, how has the landscape of Indian chess changed?
A lot has happened, a lot more needs to be done. The major difference in the landscape has been that across the country at various levels of the government, the sport is being taken more seriously than ever before. There are more tournaments happening. There is more participation than ever in the sport. Having a world champion from your own country certainly brings in a lot of eyeballs to the sport.

Question: What do you see as the future of chess in India?

The future looks bright. Corporates and governments need to get more involved and support the sport in a bigger way. We are living in the golden era of chess in India.

Salt’s wicket was the first blood drawn by Australia who are struggling in the bowling department. The Aussies are already without Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood for Champions Trophy 2025. Cummins and Hazlewood are out due to injury while Starc decided to opt out owing to personal reasons.
At the time writing, England were 132/2 in 20 overs as they continued to score above six runs per over. Ben Duckett (52 off 53) and Joe Root (41 off 48) were in the middle for England as intended to score big in their opening match. Salt (10) and Jamie Smith (15 off 13) were the other batters dismissed during England’s innings. Dwarshuis bagged both the wickets in the absence of Australia’s frontline pace options.

Champions Trophy 2025: Alex Carey takes one-handed STUNNER to dismiss Phil Salt - WATCH

The Champions Trophy 2025 has hit the ground running as eight teams compete for the first major International Cricket Council (ICC) title of 2025. India, South Africa and New Zealand have all got off to a comprehensive start as they look to add one more trophy to their cabinet. While the teams are in action at the big tournament, players and franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL) have already begun preparations for the upcoming season. Here is a detailed financial breakdown of IPL 2025 and the Champions Trophy and why the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is outsmarting the ICC.

IPL vs Champions Trophy financial breakdown

On 14 Feb 2025, ICC announced a whopping 53 per cent increase in prize money for the Champions Trophy 2025 as the tournament will splurge a cash of $6.9 million. The winner of the Champions Trophy 2025 will earn $2.24 million while runners-up will receive $1.12 million. On the other hand, losing semi-finalists of the Champions Trophy 2025 will walk away with $560,000 each from the total prize pot of $6.9 million.
Comparing this to IPL 2025, Rishabh Pant (the most expensive player) was snapped by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for a price tag of $3.1 million. This means the most expensive player in the IPL alone is pocketing more than the overall prize money earned by the winning team.
Breaking it down further, the current TV and broadcasting deals value one IPL match at an astonishing price of $13.6 million (INR 1.18 billion). This means one IPL match is valued at almost twice that of the entire price money of the Champions Trophy 2025.

At the time of writing, the prize money for IPL 2025 was yet to be confirmed, but if it is compared to IPL 2024, ICC just about manages to topple the BCCI. However, if the prize money is amended then there will be only one winner in IPL. The BCCI set a total prize pool of INR 465 million ($5.4 million) for IPL 2024 as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) emerged victorious in the final match and received INR 200 million ($2.3 million) in prize money.

Ruben Amorim admits David Moyes is doing a better job reviving Everton than the under-fire Manchester United boss has been able to achieve in his short spell at Old Trafford.
Amorim will go head-to-head with Everton boss Moyes on Saturday as he looks to drag United out of their shocking decline.
The former Sporting Lisbon boss has overseen just four wins and eight defeats in the Premier League since replacing Erik ten Hag in November.
Moyes, who was sacked by United in 2014 after less than a season in charge, has already matched Amorim's win total in just six league games since returning to Everton in January.

Everton, in 14th place, are above 15th-placed United in the table ahead of the clubs' final ever meeting at Goodison Park before the Toffees move to a new stadium next season.
Asked why Everton improved their fortunes with a new boss unlike United, Amorim said: "Simple thing. David Moyes is doing a better job than me. It's quite simple.
"And then small things like winning one game, winning two games, that belief. The pressure is also not the same.
"I don't know but I think we have to give merit to the players of Everton and especially to the coach of Everton and that's all. We need to do the same."
It was a candid admission from Amorim, who has previously acknowledged that Ten Hag and United interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, now in charge at Leicester, did better than him at Old Trafford this season.
Moyes was sacked by United after just 10 months in charge following a 2-0 loss at Everton and a defeat this weekend would increase the pressure on Amorim, whose approach has reportedly left some players unconvinced.
"I don't feel it in training," Amorim said. "If you watch our games sometimes you can have that sensation, but I'm not worried about that.
"If they are not convinced, I don't feel that. It's my job to change their minds and I'm quite good on that."
Amorim insists he has no regrets taking a job he had initially preferred to wait for until the summer, allowing him to finish the campaign with Sporting and start afresh.
"I think that is clear, it's common sense, when you start a season it's completely different," he said. "You have time to think things, to feel the players, to have pre-season, to change things that you feel are necessary in a team, in a squad. That is clear.
"That was the choice, so I don't want to talk like that. I had my reasons to ask for that and I have the most important reasons to accept the job.
"I knew it will be tough and the risk. I know that but it's Manchester United and you cannot say no."
Asked if he ever questioned whether it was the right decision to join United, he said: "No. We make a decision and then we go all the way. Of course sometimes it's really frustrating."

Jenni Hermoso will appeal the verdict in the case of former Spain football chief Luis Rubiales, who was fined after being found guilty of forcibly kissing her on the Women's World Cup-winning player, her lawyer said.
"It is her intention" to appeal, lawyer Angel Chavarria said.

In a case which rocked Spain, prosecutors had sought a prison term of two-and-a-half years for Rubiales: one year for sexual assault and 18 months for coercion for having allegedly put pressure on the player to downplay the incident afterwards.
A judge at Spain's High Court on Thursday found Rubiales guilty of sexual assault over the kiss and fined him 10,800 Euros ($11,300), but spared him a prison sentence.
The ruling also banned him from going within a radius of 200 metres of Hermoso and from communicating with her for a period of one year.
Rubiales was acquitted of coercion, for allegedly trying to pressure Hermoso into making a public statement that the kiss was consensual.
Rubiales, 47, said after the verdict that he will appeal.
The judge wrote in his ruling that kissing a woman on the mouth "is not the normal way of greeting people with whom one has no sentimental relationship," saying Rubiales had violated Hermoso's "sexual freedom" without her consent.
Video footage of the scandal that rocked Spanish football showed then-Spanish federation chief Rubiales clasping Hermoso's head at the 2023 Women's World Cup medal ceremony in Sydney and kissing her on the lips before letting her go with two slaps on the back.
But Rubiales told the court he was "totally sure" Hermoso consented to the kiss as she went up to receive her winner's medal, which was broadcast live around the world, and denied putting pressure on her after the incident.
The global outcry over the kiss forced Rubiales to resign in disgrace and thrust the spotlight on the prevalence of macho culture and sexism in sports.
Spanish Justice Minister Felix Bolanos hailed Hermoso's "courage" after the verdict.
"We must all be grateful to Jenni, because she took an initiative, in a very difficult moment, to defend the rights and freedom of women and to emphasise that this society, our Spanish society, no longer allows any type of abuse, no longer admits any type of sexual assault," he said. "One thing is clear, a non-consensual kiss is sexual assault, period," he added.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport on Friday dismissed Rubiales' appeal against his suspension from football because of the kiss, arguing his behaviour "constituted multiple and serious violations of the FIFA Disciplinary Code".
The highest court in global sport added "it saw no reason to consider the sanction to be disproportionate".
World football governing body FIFA had banned Rubiales in October 2023 for three years from all football-related activity for three years in the wake of the kiss on Hermoso.
Rubiales will therefore remain banned from football until October 2026.

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim said his side have to make extra time on the training ground count after a dreadful run of Premier League results.
The Red Devils sit 15th in the table ahead of Saturday's visit to Everton.
Amorim has won just four of his 14 league games since taking charge, while United have lost eight of the last 12.

Ruben Amorim on Man Utd crisis

The Portuguese believes he is seeing improvement in training, thanks in part to two free midweeks in the past fortnight, and urged his players to build on that in matches.
"What I see in training is they are improving and creating relationships," he said at his pre-match press conference on Friday.
"Even the sounds of the training is different. We have to use that in the game and see it in the game and take that step.
"We are bonding and we understand the way we want to play, but in the game we struggle a lot."
Amorim's hopes of a return to winning ways have been boosted by the return of Christian Eriksen, Manuel Ugarte and Leny Yoro for United's final trip to Goodison Park.
However, Amad Diallo, Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount and Luke Shaw are among those who remain on a lengthy injury list.
United's only realistic chance of a return to the Champions League next season is by winning the Europa League.

Amorim's men were handed a tough last 16 draw on Friday against Spanish side Real Sociedad.
The first leg is less than two weeks away, but the former Sporting Lisbon boss said his focus had to be on righting the ship in the Premier League.
"If I see our performances, and focus on Real Sociedad or think about trophies in the moment, it is not the right way to do my job," added Amorim. "I just want to win against Everton."

"The referees at the moment, what they are doing here in Spain with them is unbelievable," Flick told a news conference, bringing up the matter of his own accord. "You have to think about the families of the referees, all of us make mistakes, and if it happened in a match I think it's the responsibility of the coaches and the players to protect them.

"We always look for excuses, if we lose it's the referee's fault... I say, everyone makes mistakes, I do too and maybe a referee...

"I don't like that, we're always using our energy to discuss (them)... we have to trust in them, and I think the federation has to show how strong they are." The Spanish football federation said Friday the slogan "Respect the referee, respect football" will be used ahead of matches this weekend. Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham was banned for two matches this week after showing dissent to referee Jose Munuera Montero during his team's 1-1 draw at Osasuna last weekend. Bellingham was sent off and Madrid's appeal against his ban was rejected Friday, meaning he will not be available for Los Blancos on Sunday against Girona. "Bellingham is an excellent player, one of the best in his position, and he's not my player, so I don't have anything to say about that," continued Flick. The former Bayern Munich coach said referees should be protected. "We always look for excuses, if we lose it's the referee's fault... I say, everyone makes mistakes, I do too and maybe a referee... "We have to protect the match because we cannot play without referees, so this is what we have to do." Barcelona pulled level on points with Real Madrid on Monday with a 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano but lead the lead on goal difference, ahead of their visit to Las Palmas on Saturday. Madrid have been criticising officials for months on their television channel but stepped up their complaints after Espanyol defender Carlos Romero was not sent off for fouling Kylian Mbappe when the sides met on February 1 in La Liga. Liverpool will take on Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 of this season's Champions League while Friday's draw also threw up a showdown between reigning champions Real Madrid and their city rivals Atletico.
Arne Slot's Liverpool finished first in the 36-team league phase of the competition to qualify directly for this stage, while PSG finished 15th and had to come through a two-legged play-off tie in which they crushed fellow French side Brest 10-0 on aggregate.

The first leg will take place at the Parc des Princes in Paris on March 4 or 5, with the return at Anfield a week later.
The clubs last met in the Champions League in the group stage in 2018/19, when PSG won 2-1 at home after Liverpool triumphed 3-2 in England.
The only previous knockout tie between the sides came in the semi-finals of the now defunct Cup Winners' Cup in 1997, when PSG won 3-2 on aggregate before losing the final to Barcelona.
Liverpool are currently eight points clear of Arsenal at the top of the English Premier League having played a game more than their closest rivals, while Luis Enrique's PSG are unbeaten in Ligue 1 this season and sit 10 points clear at the summit.
With the draw being made up to and including the semi-finals, PSG and Liverpool know the winner of their tie will face either Club Brugge or Aston Villa in the last eight.
That raises the possibility of an all-English quarter-final between the teams who succeeded each other as European Cup winners in the early 1980s.
Villa will face Club Brugge seeking revenge for their 1-0 defeat against the same opponents in Belgium in the league phase in November.
Real, fresh from eliminating Manchester City in the play-offs, will be at home in the first leg against Atletico.
The rivals from the Spanish capital met in the competition in four straight seasons in the last decade, with Real coming out on top every time.
They won the finals of 2014 and 2016, as well as in the quarter-finals in 2015 and in the semi-finals in 2017.
"It's an amazing tie, and we are ready for it," insisted Atletico coach Diego Simeone, who was in charge for all of the past Champions League meetings between the sides.

Bayern against Leverkusen

The winners of that tie will progress to a last-eight clash against either PSV Eindhoven or Arsenal.
The Gunners, who came third in the league phase, will be coming up against a club they faced in the group stage of last season's Champions League -- Mikel Arteta's team won 4-0 at home before drawing 1-1 in the Netherlands.
"We've played against them, they are a really good team. We have experienced it and it will be really difficult," Arteta said of the reigning Dutch champions. "We know what we are facing. When you are at this stage every team is really, really good. When the time comes we will be ready for it."
Another standout tie will see Bayern Munich, the current Bundesliga leaders, take on reigning German champions Bayer Leverkusen.
Leverkusen, coached by former Bayern midfielder Xabi Alonso, are unbeaten in the last six meetings of the clubs, including a 1-0 win in the German Cup earlier this season. The teams have never previously met in a European tie.
Feyenoord, the 1970 European Cup winners, will play Italian champions Inter Milan, their reward for knocking out AC Milan in the play-offs. The winners of that tie will face Bayern or Leverkusen in the last eight.
It is the first time two Dutch clubs have been in the last 16 since 2005/06.
Current La Liga leaders Barcelona will face Benfica, who they defeated 5-4 away in Lisbon last month on their way to finishing second in the league phase.
Last season's beaten finalists Borussia Dortmund will take on French side Lille.
The semi-final draw raises the possibility of last-four showdowns between Liverpool and Arsenal, or between Kylian Mbappe's Real Madrid and his old club PSG.
Barcelona are on the same side of the draw as Bayern and Leverkusen.
This season's final takes place in Munich on May 31.

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma ran out of luck just one ball after being saved by the DRS during their opening match in the Champions Trophy 2025 on Friday (Feb 21) against Afghanistan. Playing at the National Stadium in Karachi, Bavuma’s luck was the talking point after he departed for a well-made 58. On the fourth ball of the 29th over, Bavuma tried to flick a shot on the leg side but he failed to judge the flight of the ball and was given LBW in Nabi’s over. However, the decision was challenged by the South African captain upon which it was overturned by the third umpire. However, the 34-year-old’s stay lasted just one ball as he was dismissed on the very next delivery as he tried to clear the ball over the mid-wicket and instead was caught by Sediqullah Atal.
The wicket served as a moment of revenge for Nabi who had Bavuma dismissed on the previous delivery.

The judge at Spain's High Court found Rubiales guilty of sexual assault over the kiss and fined him 10,800 euros ($11,300), but spared him a prison sentence.
Rubiales was also banned from getting within a radius of 200 metres of Hermoso and from communicating with her for a period of one year.
Video footage of the scandal that rocked Spanish football shows then-Spanish federation chief Rubiales clasping Hermoso's head at the 2023 Women's World Cup medal ceremony in Sydney and kissing her on the lips before letting her go with two slaps on the back.
The global outcry over the kiss forced Rubiales to resign in disgrace and thrust the spotlight on the prevalence of macho culture and sexism in sport.
Hermoso, 34, said on the opening day of the trial on February 3 she felt "disrespected" after a non-consensual kiss that "should not happen in any social or work setting".
Her teammates described under oath how she cried and felt "overwhelmed" following the incident, while her brother Rafael Hermoso has said she came under pressure to downplay the affair to protect the federation chief.
But Rubiales, 47, told the court he was "totally sure" that Hermoso consented to the kiss as she went up to receive her winner's medal, which was broadcast live around the world and denied putting pressure on her after the incident.
"She squeezed me very tightly under my armpits, she lifted me, and when I came down I asked her if I can give you a kiss, and she said 'OK', that's what happened," he said, describing it as "an act of affection".
Rubiales conceded he "made a mistake" in the incident on the podium, saying he should have "been in a more institutional role", but denied he had committed any offence.

'Uncontrollable joy'

While his behaviour was "inappropriate" it was not "criminal", his lawyer Olga Tubau said during her closing arguments, calling the kiss an "expression of uncontrollable joy".
Video images of Hermoso celebrating and drinking champagne with her teammates in the changing room shortly after the incident prove the player was not upset by the kiss, she added.
But public prosecutor Marta Durantez Gil rejected this line of thought during her closing arguments in which she also said there was "no doubt" the kiss was "non-consensual".
"How long are we going to keep demanding heroic behaviour from the victim of a sexual assault? Wasn't she entitled to celebrate such a sporting triumph?," she asked.
The court acquitted the three other accused in the case, ex-women's national team coach Jorge Vilda and two former federation officials, of the charge of coercion.
