Mourinho handed four-match ban, fined for racial remarks and referee blast

Three decades after Formula One engines last roared on African tarmac, South Africa is mounting a bid to organise a new Grand Prix and bring the world championship back to the continent.<o:p></o:p>
Competition to host the high-octane spectacle is between two tracks: a street circuit in Cape Town and the less picturesque but historic Kyalami race track outside of Johannesburg.<o:p></o:p>

A committee set up by sports minister Gayton McKenzie will choose the winning bid in the third quarter of the year, committee member Mlimandlela Ndamase told AFP.<o:p></o:p>
McKenzie is confident about South Africa's chances.<o:p></o:p>
"The Grand Prix is definitely coming in 2027, no doubt about that," he said early February.&nbsp; "Whether it is Cape Town or Joburg, we do not care as long as the Grand Prix is coming to South Africa."<o:p></o:p>
The challenging Kyalami circuit -- which zigzags about 30 kilometres (20 miles) outside Johannesburg and where the track is painted with a huge, colourful South African flag -- once hosted nail-biting races and legendary drivers. <o:p></o:p>But the last grand prix on African soil was held in 1993, the year before South Africa's first democratic elections that ended apartheid. It was won by Alain Prost in a Williams.<o:p></o:p>
<h2>Post-apartheid return?<o:p></o:p></h2>
South Africa's bid to host F1 can count on the support of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who has long advocated for an African Grand Prix.<o:p></o:p>
"We can't be adding races in other locations and continuing to ignore Africa," Hamilton said last August.<o:p></o:p>
Under the leadership of US conglomerate Liberty Media, which bought the Formula One Group in 2017, the sport wants to "go to every continent", said expert Samuel Tickell, of the University of Munster in Germany.<o:p></o:p>
Returning to South Africa would be "something very important for Formula 1, which has not raced there since the end of the apartheid era," he told AFP.<o:p></o:p>
The sport had lived some "historic moments" in the country, Tickell said, including a threatened strike led by Niki Lauda in 1982 against a racing "super-licence" restricting drivers' contractual freedom.<o:p></o:p>
South Africa also boasts the continent's only world champion, Ferrari's Jody Scheckter in 1979.<o:p></o:p>
Creating a race on the continent would not require excluding other venues as the F1 calendar is always expanding. The upcoming season counts seven more Grand Prix than in 2009, for example.<o:p></o:p>
Sky-high organisational costs and hosting fees would not be an obstacle either, said Simon Chadwick, professor of sport and geopolitical economics at Skema Business School in Paris.<o:p></o:p>
"Even if races are not commercially viable, to some of the countries and their backers, that won't matter because it's a strategic payoff," he said.<o:p></o:p>
China, for instance, has "long been building sports infrastructure for African countries in return for access to their natural resources," he said.<o:p></o:p>
Johannesburg's Kyalami race track is certified as Grade 2, just a level below that needed for a F1 race and it will require some work to host an event.<o:p></o:p>
<h3>Rwanda 'pole position'<o:p></o:p></h3>
An alternative circuit vying to hold the prestigious race would snake through the streets of Cape Town, recently ranked "best city in the world" by Time Out magazine.<o:p></o:p>
Winding its way around the stadium built for the 2010 men's football World Cup in the shadow of the emblematic Lion's Head mountain overlooking the ocean, the route has already hosted a Formula E race in 2023.<o:p></o:p>
A F1 street circuit in the city would "outclass Monaco," said Cape Town Grand Prix CEO Igshaan Amlay. <o:p></o:p>
Yet the real battle may be less between the two rival cities than against Rwanda, whose President Paul Kagame was at the Singapore Grand Prix in September to meet the sport's governing body the FIA and F1 owners Liberty Media, Chadwick said.<o:p></o:p>
The central African country already sponsors Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain football giants and is a partner of the NBA.<o:p></o:p>
"Rwanda is in pole position," Chadwick said.<o:p></o:p>
Morocco has also long had ambitions of hosting a F1 race.<o:p></o:p>
Still, nothing prevents two GPs being held on the continent, with the South African sports minister asking: "Why is it that when it comes to Africa, we are treated like we can only get one?"<o:p></o:p>
Rwanda's F1 bid could though be hampered by its involvement in the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Already calls are mounting to withdraw the cycling Road World Championships, planned in Kigali in September.

Formula 1: South Africa bid for first African Grand Prix in 30 years

FC Goa secured a 1-0 victory against Punjab FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 on Thursday (Feb 27). The Gaurs moved to 45 points in 22 games as a consequence of this win, solidifying their grip over the second spot, which could guarantee them a straight semi-final berth.
<h2 class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Goa beat Punjab 1-0</h2>
They are now ahead of the third and fourth-placed Bengaluru FC and Jamshedpur FC respectively by eight points each, though the latter have three games in hand to cut that deficit. Punjab FC are in 11th place with 24 points from 22 encounters.
FC Goa stepped in with intent, displaying fluidity in their gameplay both from open sequences and set-pieces. They produced a well-coordinated corner kick in the eighth minute as Borja Herrera&rsquo;s precise delivery met Odei Onaindia on the far post.
Onaindia, however, was positioned laterally, and hence he didn&rsquo;t go for a direct attempt at goal, instead laying up a headed pass for Carl McHugh. Muheet Shabir Khan pre-empted this sequence brilliantly between the posts and stopped the effort from going in with a timely save in the ninth minute.
McHugh was successful in finding the back of the net at the brink of the conclusion of the first essay of the game. Udanta Singh delivered a long throw-in for the Irish midfielder, who was looking to break into the Punjab FC box with a quick sprint. McHugh met the delivery properly, drilling the ball into the bottom left corner with his left foot to get the Gaurs a goal ahead going into the half-time break.
Punjab FC sparked in a small phase of the game where they were on the offensive in the opening 15 minutes of the second half. They embraced a slightly direct approach and Ricky Shabong embodied that in the 57th minute with a long-range effort from a throw-in that goalkeeper Hrithik Tiwari rushed ahead and saved calmly before it could trigger any jitters inside the FC Goa defensive third.
That did not cut down Punjab FC&rsquo;s willingness to try their luck from a distance. Petros Giakoumakis ran backward, got a loose second ball under his control before making a sharp turn in the 64th minute and launching a thunderous effort that missed the top right corner of the net by a slender margin.

Eight minutes later, Giakoumakis turned provider by laying up a pass for Tekcham Singh outside the box. The latter could have arguably engaged in further build-up but instead backed his instincts to attempt a long-distance shot, which was blocked in time by the visiting defensive unit.
Punjab FC kept pressing for the equaliser right until the end, as in the 87th minute mark they had Ninthoinganba Meetei and Khaiminthang Lhungdim near the goal. Lhungdim&rsquo;s left-footed shot zoomed high and wide to the left, culminating a night of missed chances for the home side.

ISL 2024-25: Goa secure narrow win over Punjab to strengthen grip over second spot

Jannik Sinner had his nomination for the prestigious Laureus Sportsman of the Year award withdrawn on Thursday after he was banned for three months following two failed drugs tests, an official said.
<h2>Sinner dropped from list</h2>
The world number one from Italy, who is the reigning US Open and Australian Open champion, twice tested positive for traces of the banned anabolic steroid clostebol in March last year.
"Following discussions by the Laureus Academy it has been decided that Jannik Sinner's nomination for this year's Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award is to be withdrawn," said the awards body chairman Sean Fitzpatrick, the former New Zealand rugby union great.
"We have followed this case, the decisions of the relevant global bodies and - whilst we note the extenuating circumstances involved - feel that the three-month ban renders the nomination ineligible.&nbsp;
"Jannik and his team have been informed."
Earlier in February, the 23-year-old Sinner agreed to a three-month ban from tennis after admitting "partial responsibility" for team mistakes which led to him twice testing positive in March 2024.
His suspension ends on May 4, allowing him to return in time for the French Open, the season's second Grand Slam event of the year.

The Laureus awards have been offered annually since 2000 by a 69-strong jury comprised of sporting greats who make up the Laureus Academy.
In 2024, fellow tennis star Novak Djokovic took the sportsman of the year award for a record fifth time.

Jannik Sinner dropped from Laureus awards list after doping ban

Pakistan&rsquo;s cricket hit another low on Thursday (Feb 27) after the side exited the Champions Trophy without a win despite being the hosts of the tournament. The defending champions saw their final game washed out against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi, meaning they failed to win any of the three matches in the Champions Trophy 2025. The exit has not gone well, with reports that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will personally look into the matter while it will also be discussed in the cabinet meeting and the parliament.
<h2 class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Pakistan PM to take note of CT exit</h2>
"The prime minister will personally take notice and we will also ask him to raise these [cricket-related] issues in the cabinet as well as in parliament," PM Shehbaz Sharif's aide on Political and Public Affairs Rana Sanaullah said while speaking on Geo News' programme "Geo Pakistan" on Thursday.
Having lost to New Zealand and India in their opening two matches of the Champions Trophy 2025, Pakistan were optimistic about a favourable result on Monday. However, Bangladesh&rsquo;s defeat to New Zealand confirmed the hosts&rsquo; exit from the tournament. There was pride up for stake in the final group stage match on Thursday, however, the washout meant neither Pakistan nor Bangladesh ended the tournament with a win.

The poor run means Pakistan have exited the last three ICC tournaments in the initial stage. Pakistan were knocked out in the league stage of the 2023 ODI World Cup, while a run of poor results in the 2024 T20 World Cup also saw them exit in the group stage. Not since reaching the 2022 T20 World Cup final has Pakistan enjoyed a good run in an ICC tournament.
It is widely expected that Pakistan cricket will undergo major changes in the coming days, with domestic cricket to be given more weight. Young players are expected to feature in the side, while the role of senior players will be limited.

The National Football League (NFL) is thinking to bring major changes in the overtime rules starting next season. The changes, however, will be done only in regular season and not in post season. These supposed changes will be regarding the possession of the ball for the team that loses the toss.
If NFL executive vice president Troy Vincent's words are to be believed, then the league's Competition Committee is thinking about giving possession to both teams if a regular season goes in overtime - just like the playoff games.

"The NFL will review overtime rules, noting there&rsquo;s been an uptick in the number of victories for teams that receive the opening kick in OT. (Dynamic kickoff could be a factor here.) Possible the postseason OT rules (guaranteed possession for both teams) could be apply to reg season," reported NFL Network Mark Garafolo.
As of now, there is a coin toss between the teams if the game goes in OT and the winning team gets possession. If they manage to score on their first drive, they win the game - not even giving a chance to the second team.
In postseason, both teams get at least one possession each, and if they both score, then the team that scored the next touchdown wins&mdash;a rather fair practice.

Super Bowl LIX winners Philadelphia Eagles have clarified their official stance on whether or not they'll be going to the White House. The team, on Monday (Feb 24), informed reporters following a meeting that they'd be happy to visit the President in the White House if invited.
The White House or President Donald Trump, however, have not extended any such invitation yet. The Eagles, meanwhile, are looking forward to it.
An invitation was given to the Eagles following their 2018 Super Bowl victory, but after many players refused to go, the White House took down the invitation.

PL: ‘Old City were too good, but we will be back,’ Guardiola vows to paint Manchester blue again

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said his defender Raul Asencio was "affected" by chants calling for him to die on Wednesday at Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey. Los Blancos earned a 1-0 semi-final first leg win thanks to Endrick's goal but there was controversy as home fans chanted "Asencio die" and the match was briefly paused by the referee as a result.<o:p></o:p>
Fans have aimed the chant at the 22-year-old centre-back at various stadiums in recent weeks, but this was the first time the match has been stopped.<o:p></o:p>

Asencio is alleged to have shared a sexually explicit video of a minor recorded by two former Real Madrid youth players, and is under investigation by a Spanish court.<o:p></o:p>
The match was stopped just before half-time after Vinicius reported the chants against Asencio to the referee.<o:p></o:p>
"Vinicius spoke to the referee, the referee stopped the game, he applied the protocol, that was what had to happen," Ancelotti told reporters.<o:p></o:p>
The coach substituted the defender at half-time for Lucas Vazquez.<o:p></o:p>
"I took him off because of two things, he was affected, and he had a yellow card, so I preferred to take him off," explained Ancelotti. "I think nobody likes that a stadium chants for you to die, I think he was affected in that sense.<o:p></o:p>
"He wasn't exactly happy, I preferred to take him off in case how he was feeling could affect the game."<o:p></o:p>
Real Sociedad forward Mikel Oyarzabal added: "The insults should be condemned, we don't like them... there are other ways to condemn the actions that others may have committed. We don't think this is the right way."<o:p></o:p>
A video subsequently emerged on social media of a Real Sociedad fan appearing to make monkey gestures at Vinicius Junior while the game was stopped.<o:p></o:p>

Bellingham, who missed Madrid's win against Girona in La Liga last weekend through suspension, looked fresh and helped his side stay largely on top.<o:p></o:p>
Vinicius came close with a low shot which Alex Remiro tipped to safety.<o:p></o:p>
Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin made a fine double save early in the second half to keep Mikel Oyarzabal and Takefusa Kubo at bay.<o:p></o:p>
Madrid came close to a second at the other end when Endrick crashed a shot against the bar from the edge of the box.<o:p></o:p>
Remiro produced a fine save to push away Bellingham's deflected strike and then another to thwart the same player from long range in the final stages, keeping Real Sociedad's hopes of a second leg comeback alive.<o:p></o:p>
One worry for Madrid was an injury to Dani Ceballos which he sustained in stoppage time after a clash with Kubo. "He has a muscular problem," said Ancelotti.<o:p></o:p>
The coach was happy with his side's display.<o:p></o:p>
"I think the team's doing well, we rotated but maintained our solidity, it was a good game in a defensive sense," he added.<o:p></o:p>
In the other semi-final first leg on Tuesday Atletico Madrid fought back to draw 4-4 with record 31-time cup winners Barcelona.

It was his sixth goal of the campaign, four of those coming in the Copa del Rey, where Ancelotti has given him the most chance to shine. Bellingham, who missed Madrid's win against Girona in La Liga last weekend through suspension, looked fresh and helped his side stay largely on top. Vinicius came close with a low shot which Alex Remiro tipped to safety. Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin made a fine double save early in the second half to keep Mikel Oyarzabal and Takefusa Kubo at bay. Madrid came close to a second at the other end when Endrick crashed a shot against the bar from the edge of the box. Remiro produced a fine save to push away Bellingham's deflected strike and then another to thwart the same player from long range in the final stages, keeping Real Sociedad's hopes of a second leg comeback alive. One worry for Madrid was an injury to Dani Ceballos which he sustained in stoppage time after a clash with Kubo. "He has a muscular problem," said Ancelotti. The coach was happy with his side's display. "I think the team's doing well, we rotated but maintained our solidity, it was a good game in a defensive sense," he added. In the other semi-final first leg on Tuesday Atletico Madrid fought back to draw 4-4 with record 31-time cup winners Barcelona. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting is in awe of Virat Kohli as he continues to impress for Team India in the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025. The veteran Indian batter scored his 51st ODI hundred on Sunday (Feb 23) as the Men in Blue beat Pakistan in the Champions Trophy 2025. According to Ponting, Virat is the best 50-over player he has seen after smashing multiple records. <o:p></o:p>
<h2 class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Ponting in awe of Virat<o:p></o:p></h2>
"Congratulations to him [Kohli]. He's obviously been a champion player for a long, long time. And particularly, probably in the white-ball formats where he's been an unbelievably good 50-over player," Ponting said while speaking to the ICC Review Podcast. "In fact, I think I'm on record before saying I don't think I've ever seen a better 50-over player than Virat Kohli.<o:p></o:p>
"It's crazy when you think about it, isn't it? Just how good Virat's been over such a long period of time, yet he's still 4,000 runs behind Sachin. I mean, it just goes to show how good Sachin was, but also his longevity in the game,&rdquo; added Ponting.<o:p></o:p>
On Sunday Virat scored his 82nd international ton while also completing 14,000 runs in the ODI format. In ODIs, he already holds the record for most hundreds and is only behind Sachin Tendulkar for most tons at the international level. With at least two matches to go in the Champions Trophy 2025, he is set to become the second-highest ODI run scorer with currently Tendulkar and Sri Lanka&rsquo;s Kumar Sangakkara sitting ahead of him.<o:p></o:p>
