The French League's disciplinary commission on Wednesday banned new Lyon coach Paulo Fonseca until November after an angry altercation with a referee. Former AC Milan coach Fonseca has paid a heavy price after seeing red during his side's 2-1 win over Brest in Ligue 1 on Sunday.<o:p></o:p>
Fonseca only replaced the sacked Pierre Sage at the former multiple French champions four weeks ago. Now he finds himself in the complicated position of being banned from the dugout and the referee's changing room until November 30.<o:p></o:p>

"By throwing himself at the referee and shouting at him (Fonseca) displayed an intimidating and threatening attitude," Deneux said.<o:p></o:p>
The ruling must inevitably cast a doubt over Fonseca's position as Lyon's head coach. <o:p></o:p>
Since the Portuguese's arrival on January 31 he has overseen only three games, an opening defeat to Marseille, a 4-0 win over Reims, and Sunday's defeat of Brest to leave Lyon in sixth place.<o:p></o:p>
Wednesday's ruling falls a week after Marseille president Pablo Longoria was banned for 15 matches for accusations of refereeing "corruption" in the aftermath of his side's 3-0 loss at Auxerre.<o:p></o:p>
"The commission regret that once again a major figure in Ligue 1 has demonstrated such behaviour," said Deneux. "Mr Fonseca is a coach in Ligue 1, he is above all a teacher, and it goes without saying this attitude is completely incompatible with his duties."

"We deserved to win clearly, we created a lot of chances," said the Spaniard. "Football is unfair many times and you have to accept that." Harry Kane scored twice as Bayern closed in on the last eight with a first win over Xabi Alonso's Leverkusen in seven matches. The England captain headed in Michael Olise's superb cross to give Bayern the lead at the Allianz Arena. Jamal Musiala added a second early in the second half when Leverkusen goalkeeper Matej Kovar let an innocuous delivery into the box from Joshua Kimmich slip from his grasp. Bayern lost Manuel Neuer to injury before the night went from bad to worse for Leverkusen, who had Nordi Mukiele sent off. Kane rounded off the scoring from the penalty spot following a VAR review after he was impeded by Edmond Tapsoba. "It was a really big step in the right direction. We've struggled against this side over the last couple of years," Kane told DAZN. A downbeat Alonso admitted it would take a remarkable turn of events for Leverkusen to overturn the deficit. "In football we've seen big miracles quite often and we almost need one," he said. Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits for grammar and punctuation. Champions League: Liverpool beat PSG, Bayern thrash league winners Leverkusen in last 16

Raphinha claimed Barcelona a 1-0 Champions League last-16 first leg win at Benfica on Wednesday, despite the Catalan giants playing most of the game with 10 men. Teenage defender Pau Cubarsi was sent off midway through the first half of the tight clash in Lisbon with the score goalless.<o:p></o:p>

"The last time I don't think (Szczesny) left here very happy," said Barca midfielder Pedri. "He saved a lot (tonight), one at the start where if they score you start the game on a bad footing -- between the sticks he's a big presence and it's great to have him."<o:p></o:p>

Barcelona defended frantically in the final stages as Benfica sought to level and Szczesny came to the fore.<o:p></o:p>
The hosts thought they had won a penalty when Szczesny felled Andrea Belotti, but there was an offside in the build-up and Barcelona survived with their lead intact.<o:p></o:p>
"Today we knew how to defend," added Pedri. "After the red we knew exactly what to do, stay together at the back, defend as a block and take advantage of our chances with the players we have up front."<o:p></o:p>
Pavlidis said the Catalans were lucky to escape.<o:p></o:p>
"Barcelona were lucky and scored the goal, we didn't and it's a big disappointment," said the Greek striker. "Maybe on another day we could have scored three goals... there is a second game and everything is still up for grabs."

Raphinha helps 10-man Barcelona win away at Benfica in Champions League

Bryson DeChambeau said in Hong Kong on Wednesday that he was staying with LIV Golf, shooting down rumours he was unhappy on the Saudi-backed circuit and was looking for a way back to the PGA Tour.
Rumours had been swirling online over the past few days that the US Open champion was seeking to leave LIV after his proposal for a $280 million contract renewal was rebuffed.

Asked by AFP if there was any truth in the rumours ahead of this week's LIV Hong Kong tournament, two-time major winner DeChambeau replied: "No, I'm very excited about the future of LIV Golf.&nbsp;
"I'm very excited to be the captain of the Crushers and continue our legacy that we're starting to create."
The 31-year-old American, whose current deal with LIV runs until 2026, has a huge social media and YouTube following.
As a LIV Golf team captain he has a 25 percent equity stake in his Crushers squad, which also features Anirban Lahiri, Paul Casey and Charles Howell III.
DeChambeau recently bagged a huge sponsorship deal for his team to wear Reebok kit and unveiled a dream to use the millions he earns with LIV to spread Crushers-branded courses and golf academies all over the globe.
"My goal is to create this lasting legacy where we impact millions and millions of golfers' lives around the world," he said in the southern Chinese city.&nbsp;
"That should tell you everything you should know."
DeChambeau will tee up on Friday with his Crushers looking to defend the team title they won a year ago at the historic Fanling club, which recently celebrated its 135th anniversary.
Mexico's Abraham Ancer defends his individual title from 12 months ago, while Patrick Reed plays in the event as Hong Kong Open champion.
The American former Masters champion shot the second-ever 59 on the Asian Tour on his way to lifting the trophy in November on the par-70 championship course.

LIV Golf star Bryson DeChambeau shuts down PGA Tour return rumours

"I missed a full toss. It wasn't ideal," said Steve Smith after Australia lost the Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final against India on Mar 4 in Dubai. Smith was batting at 73 at the time and Australia were two short of 200. His wicket started a bit of collapse and the Aussies were bowled out for 264.
A day after the loss, Smith announced his retirement from ODIs - giving the rationale that new players should have enough time to prep for the 2027 ODI World Cup - which Australia will be defending.

One question that pops, however, did Smith's retirement come due to his dismissal. While Smith didn't say anything directly, a batter of his stature missing a juicy full-toss certainly raises a question. The wicket came in the 37th over at a time when Australia were looking good for a score of 300. Have a look at the dismissal below:

"Test cricket remains a priority and I am really looking forward to the World Test Championship final, the West Indies in the winter and then England at home. I feel I still have a lot to contribute on that stage," Smith said on his retirement.
Smith played 170 ODIs in his career, scoring 5,800 runs at an average of 43 with 12 hundreds and 35 fifties. His highest in 50-over cricket was 164.
Smith was part of two World Cup winning teams (2015 and 2023) and mentioned them as one of his best memories in ODI cricket.
"There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight along with the many fantastic teammates who shared the journey." he said.
The batter, however, remains a force to reckon with in Test cricket where he has 10,271 runs in 116 games at an average of 53 and 36 hundreds - not bad for someone who started as a leggie, isn't it?

A day after the loss vs India, Smith announced his retirement from ODIs - giving the rationale that new players should have enough time to prep for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Cricket Sports

While Smith didn't say anything directly, a batter of his stature missing a juicy full-toss certainly raises a question. The wicket came in the 37th over at a time when Australia were looking good for a score of 300. It was a historic day for the NBA on Tuesday (Mar 4) as LeBron James registered a unique record of 50,000 career points, becoming the first player to do so. Playing for Los Angeles Lakers against New Orleans Pelicans, LeBron achieved the feat in the first quarter and registered his name in the record books. He had entered the contest with 49,999 points having helped Lakers beat Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday.

One of the greatest players in NBA history, LeBron registered his name in the record books while he was playing in his 22nd season. The 40-year-old needed only one point heading into the NBA contest, which he did with ease. He scored a remarkable 25-foot three-pointer to move to 50,002 points which brought the Crypto.com Arena crowd on its feet. Luka Doncic provided the pass to the historic point as LeBron scripted history.
Now in his seventh season with LA Lakers, LeBron had surpassed Abdul-Jabbar's total tally of 44,149 in 2023 and leads the top spot with a lead of nearly 6,000 points. At the time of writing, Karl Malone sits third with 41,689 points and late Kobe Bryant is fourth with 39,283 points. Legendary Michael Jordan sits fifth on the all-time list with 38,279 points.

NFL: Philadelphia Eagles ink record new deal with Saquon Barkley after Super Bowl triumph

Real Madrid claimed a small edge on city rivals Atletico Madrid with a tight 2-1 Champions League last-16 first leg win on Tuesday.
Julian Alvarez levelled for Atletico after Rodrygo Goes sent the hosts ahead, but Brahim Diaz stroked home the winner for the record 15-time winners to delight the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.
"I think we played a complete game today, (my) goal was good and it earned us the win, but it's not over," Diaz told Movistar.
"There's still the second leg and we have to give everything, like we did today."
Diego Simeone's Atletico, who lost in the 2014 and 2016 finals against their bitter rivals, kept stars Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe quiet but still came up short.
The Rojiblancos played it safe in the final stages, seeming to accept their one-goal disadvantage for the second leg derby clash at home next week.
"For a moment we had the game under control, but we knew that it would not be an easy match, because they were at home and they have great players," said Alvarez.
"But we know there are 90 minutes to go... it's one goal, and another game, at home with our fans."
Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti opted for Morocco international Diaz in midfield to replace the suspended Jude Bellingham and selected Fede Valverde at right-back after he was passed fit to play.
The Italian had demanded his side show a better attitude and more commitment than during their La Liga defeat by Real Betis on Saturday and his charges delivered.
"The second half was better (than the first), we worked hard, defended well, our objective was to take a small advantage and we did it," said Ancelotti.
Rodrygo pounced after just four minutes, slipping inside Javi Galan to collect Valverde's teasing pass before firing home with his left foot across Jan Oblak and inside the far post.
It was the Brazilian winger's fifth strike of the tournament, habitually shining on the European stage for Madrid, where he boasts 25 goals in 61 appearances.
His compatriot Vinicius came close to netting Madrid's second as he surged into the box but Jose Gimenez blocked his shot well.

<h2 style="text-align: justify;">We're alive</h2>
Atletico began to create danger of their own and Valverde hacked away Giuliano Simeone's whipped ball from under his own crossbar under pressure from Samuel Lino.
Alvarez levelled with a brilliant individual goal, dancing away from Eduardo Camavinga on the left of the box and curling his shot past Thibaut Courtois into the top corner.
The former Manchester City striker has been in sublime form in the past few weeks, notching 10 goals in 14 matches and proving why Atletico made him their second most expensive signing of all-time last summer.
"They started better... I think the big plus from our team was that we didn't give up, we didn't get stage fright after conceding so early," said Simeone.
"We started to play, to get into the game, and to own the ball more, and play more in their half."
Antoine Griezmann and Rodrigo De Paul helped Atletico keep control for long periods, with Madrid finding it hard to take the ball back from their rivals.
That made it all the more surprising when Diaz restored Los Blancos' lead in the 55th minute.
The midfielder left Gimenez on the floor with some quick footwork and carved out the space for a tidy low finish, before leaping into the crowd to celebrate.
Griezmann fired wide and Gimenez over as Atletico looked for a response and Ancelotti brought on 39-year-old midfielder Luka Modric in search of more control.
The Croatian delivered just that and neither side threatened in the final half hour of the match until stoppage time, when Madrid might have secured a third.
Mbappe's cut-back from the right was behind Vinicius who was waiting for a tap-in, and Oblak saved from Modric in the aftermath.
Atletico host Real Madrid next week at the Metropolitano stadium, with the winner facing Arsenal or PSV Eindhoven in the quarter-finals.
"We're alive (in the tie) and we have to correct the mistakes we made and go for it in the second leg," said Atletico midfielder Marcos Llorente.

The Delhi high court on Tuesday (March 4) granted bail to Olympian wrestler <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/sushil-kumar">Sushil Kumar</a>, the prime accused in the murder case of junior national wrestling champion <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/sagar-dhankar">Sagar Dhankar</a>.
Justice Sanjeev Narula&rsquo;s bench ordered Kumar&rsquo;s release on bail upon furnishing a bond of $570 along with two sureties of the same amount.
Sushil Kumar, along with several others, is accused of assaulting Dhankar and his two friends, Sonu and Amit Kumar, in the parking lot of Delhi&rsquo;s Chhatrasal Stadium on May 4, 2021, reportedly over a property dispute. Dhankar succumbed to his injuries due to cerebral damage caused by blunt force trauma, as per the post-mortem report.

Finding a prima facie case for murder against the accused, the trial court, while framing charges against the accused persons, had noted that the deceased, after being abducted and brought to the stadium, was given severe beatings by many of the accused persons who used sticks, baseball and hockey sticks to cause bodily injuries to him.
The judge had further noted that the victims were tortured by the accused persons for a prolonged time after putting lock at the main gate of the stadium so as to rule out any help for the deceased.
Kumar had been in judicial custody since June 2, 2021. Previously, he was granted interim bail twice&mdash;once to perform his father&rsquo;s last rites and another time for surgery on a torn ligament.
Following Dhankar&rsquo;s death, Kumar evaded authorities for 18 days, traveling across <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/punjab">Punjab</a>, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/uttar-pradesh">Uttar Pradesh</a>, Uttarakhand, and Haryana before being arrested in Delhi&rsquo;s Mundka area while attempting to collect cash. He was also suspended from his job with the Railways after his arrest.
In October 2022, the trial court framed charges against Kumar and 17 others, initiating the legal proceedings against them.

Colombian doctor facing suspended jail term Doctor Fredy Gonzales Torres is alleged to have helped Colombian riders Nairo Quintana, 35, a former Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a Espana winner and three-time Tour de France podium finisher, and his 32-year-old brother Dayer take prohibited substances while riding for the Arkéa-Samsic team. Equipment and medication were seized, notably in the room of Doctor Gonzales, during searches of hotels occupied by the French team during the Tour de France in 2020. The Colombian doctor faces charges of "possession of a substance or method prohibited for use by an athlete without medical justification, in this case equipment, tools, products and devices for carrying out intravenous infusions and/or injections", as well as for having administered them "without medical justification" to the Quintana brothers. The defendant's lawyer Mohamed El Yousfi insisted that "no doping product" had "ever been seized" in this case and called for an acquittal. The defendant was not present in court on Monday. The judgement was adjourned until April 2. In 2022, Nairo Quintana was disqualified from the Tour de France, where he had finished sixth, after traces of Tramadol, a prohibited painkiller, were found in his blood. Nottingham Forest needed penalties to beat Ipswich and book a place in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Monday after a 1-1 draw at the City Ground.
<h2>Forest in QF</h2>
Jack Taylor was the only man who failed to score from the spot as Matz Sels' save edged the shootout 5-4 in Forest's favour to set up a last eight trip to Brighton.
The sides are separated by 15 places and 31 points in the Premier League, but with Forest's priority securing Champions League football next season, Nuno Espirito Santo rested a number of his key players.
Ipswich sensed their opportunity and took the lead early in the second half when George Hirst headed in a corner at the back post.
Ryan Yates took advantage of some woeful defending to nod in an equaliser 22 minutes from time.
An extra 30 minutes of extra-time came and went without a winner despite Nuno sending on top scorer Chris Wood and England international Morgan Gibbs-White.

Membou made his 40-yard run in just 4.91 seconds - but the interesting thing his that he weighs as whopping 332 pounds. Wilson, who ran the 40-yard sprint in 4.84 seconds, is 20 pounds lighter than Membou.

The 6'4" OL is projected to be picked in the first round of the NFL Draft this year, with the combine database giving him two years to become a good starter.

<h2>NFL planning big changes in overtime rules</h2>
The National Football League (NFL) is thinking to bring major changes in the overtime rules starting next season. The changes, however, will be done only in regular season and not in post season. These supposed changes will be regarding the possession of the ball for the team that loses the toss.
If NFL executive vice president Troy Vincent's words are to be believed, then the league's Competition Committee is thinking about giving possession to both teams if a regular season goes in overtime&mdash;just like the playoff games.
As of now, there is a coin toss between the teams if the game goes in OT and the winning team gets possession. If they manage to score on their first drive, they win the game&mdash;not even giving a chance to the second team.

Barcelona secured a comfortable 4-0 win over Real Sociedad on Sunday to move back top of La Liga. Aritz Elustondo's early red card gave Hansi Flick's side a comfortable afternoon with Gerard Martin, Marc Casado, Ronald Araujo and Robert Lewandowski on the scoresheet.<o:p></o:p>
Atletico Madrid beat Athletic Bilbao on Saturday to temporarily knock the Catalans from their perch, while Real Madrid, third, lost at Real Betis.<o:p></o:p>
Flick was able to rotate his side a little ahead of the Champions League last 16 visit to face Benfica on Wednesday and still move one point above Atletico.<o:p></o:p>

"There were a lot of things that helped us a lot today, the red card but also how we played, we were dominant after the red card," Flick told reporters.<o:p></o:p>
The German coach said before the game Barca would fight hard to win all of the three major competitions they are in, and reiterated it afterwards.<o:p></o:p>
"Today we are happy with the three points and there's a long way to go in La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League," he continued. "We will fight for every title and when we started the season no-one (expected) this.<o:p></o:p>
"We're in this situation, that we can fight (for the trophies), and that's what we want until the end of the season."<o:p></o:p>
Real Sociedad, ninth, threatened in the opening stages but fell foul of Barcelona's offside trap, with Sergio Gomez's strike ruled out.<o:p></o:p>
At the other end Barcelona playmaker Pedri Gonzalez came close when he pressed La Real goalkeeper Alex Remiro and deflected his attempted clearance just over and onto the roof of the net.<o:p></o:p>
The game swung Barcelona's way when Elustondo was sent off in the 17th minute for pulling down Dani Olmo, who was running through on goal.<o:p></o:p>
The hosts took the lead after 25 minutes when Olmo chipped the ball across for Martin to fire home the first goal of his career.<o:p></o:p>
Four minutes later, Barca had their second, with Olmo involved again, this time his wayward shot deflected home by team-mate Casado.<o:p></o:p>
The enterprising Lamine Yamal teed up Pedri but Remiro saved his shot from the edge of the box as Barca dominated.<o:p></o:p>
<h2>'Happy to help'<o:p></o:p></h2>
Pedri came close again after the break with an effort from range which bounced back off the crossbar, shortly before Araujo nabbed the third.<o:p></o:p>
Remiro pushed out Lewandowski's header from corner but Araujo nodded home the rebound.<o:p></o:p>
Lewandowski cleverly converted Barcelona's fourth, prodding home Araujo's low drive from distance. The 36-year-old leads the league with 21 goals in 25 appearances.<o:p></o:p>
"I'm very happy for our performance and it was important to win and go back to being leaders," Araujo told Movistar. "I'm happy for the good work we did and going first again."<o:p></o:p>
Since recovering from a bad knee injury, Araujo has been unable to reclaim a regular starting spot in defence.<o:p></o:p>
"I came back from a long-term injury, I'm calm and going step by step, I believe in myself and my characteristics, and I am happy to help," said Araujo.<o:p></o:p>
"I think it is important to have a competitive team to win titles, not just 11 players but a good bench too."<o:p></o:p>
Barcelona played out the final half an hour without incident, occasionally threatening, with substitute Ferran Torres twice coming close to a fifth.<o:p></o:p>
"The red card, after that the game changed completely, we came here to try and dominate the ball," said Real Sociedad defender Javi Lopez.<o:p></o:p>
"A sending off changes everything... they also had luck on their goals and that makes it very difficult against one of the best teams in the world."

Miami pressed as Houston tried to play out from the back and Benjamin Cremaschi nicked the ball to Suarez, whose deft touch put in Segovia and the Venezuelan slotted home.<o:p></o:p>
Houston responded well, enjoying plenty of possession but they were hit on the break in the 37th minute with Tadeo Allende finishing off the counter-attack with an emphatic left-foot drive.<o:p></o:p>

The 13-time FA Cup winners had reached the final for the last two seasons and beat Manchester City to lift the trophy last year. But there will be no trip to Wembley this season for United, who have only the Europa League left as a silverware chance.<o:p></o:p>
"It's hard. We had the best chances in the game but in the end the penalties can go both ways and today it was not our day," Amorim said. "I know that we are losing games and losing trophies during this season but the goal is to win the Premier League.<o:p></o:p>
"I don't know how long it's going to take. But if you think like that, we can suffer a little bit in these defeats."<o:p></o:p>

<h2>United woe<o:p></o:p></h2>
Abusive chants directed at United owners the Glazer family and Jim Ratcliffe were audible in the first half, while banners criticising ticket price increases were displayed in the stands.<o:p></o:p>
Fulham threatened for the first time when Sasa Lukic headed over from Alex Iwobi's cross.<o:p></o:p>
It was a warning United failed to heed as Fulham snatched the lead with their first shot on target seconds before half-time.<o:p></o:p>

Amorim left Alejandro Garnacho on the bench for the first 53 minutes after the Argentine's petulant response to being substituted against Ipswich.<o:p></o:p>
The 20-year-old had stormed straight down the tunnel in an incident that Amorim said had been resolved after the winger agreed to buy dinner for his team-mates.<o:p></o:p>
Amorim was forced to turn to Garnacho with United trailing, his introduction sparking a roar from the stands but little improvement from his team.<o:p></o:p>

Ryan Sessegnon went close with a powerful effort that Onana pushed away, but United's fate was finally sealed in a nerve-wracking shoot-out.

United woe Abusive chants directed at United owners the Glazer family and Jim Ratcliffe were audible in the first half, while banners criticising ticket price increases were displayed in the stands. Fulham threatened for the first time when Sasa Lukic headed over from Alex Iwobi's cross. It was a warning United failed to heed as Fulham snatched the lead with their first shot on target seconds before half-time. United's weakness at set-pieces was exposed as Andreas Pereira's corner was flicked on by Rodrigo Muniz and Bassey reacted quicker than Noussair Mazraoui to head home from six yards. Amorim left Alejandro Garnacho on the bench for the first 53 minutes after the Argentine's petulant response to being substituted against Ipswich. The 20-year-old had stormed straight down the tunnel in an incident that Amorim said had been resolved after the winger agreed to buy dinner for his team-mates. Amorim was forced to turn to Garnacho with United trailing, his introduction sparking a roar from the stands but little improvement from his team. Not for the first time this season, United captain Fernandes papered over the cracks for a while. Fernandes hauled his side level in the 71st minute, meeting Diogo Dalot's cross with a superb low finish into the far corner from 12 yards. Yet, although United had come from behind to beat Ipswich and draw with Everton, there would be no escape act this time. Onana denied Emile Smith Rowe in stoppage-time, setting up a scrappy extra-time period featuring few chances until Chido Obi nearly squeezed his shot past Leno. Ryan Sessegnon went close with a powerful effort that Onana pushed away, but United's fate was finally sealed in a nerve-wracking shoot-out. Team to pay for goalkeeper’s time-waste in new rule change from next season

La Liga champions Real Madrid suffered a 2-1 defeat at Real Betis on Saturday, which coach Carlo Ancelotti said was a "big blow" to their title defence, while Atletico Madrid took advantage to move top of the table.<o:p></o:p>
Diego Simeone's side scraped a nervy 1-0 win against Athletic Bilbao, fourth, to lead Barcelona and Real Madrid by two points.<o:p></o:p>
For Betis, Isco scored the winner from the penalty spot against his former side Madrid, third, with Barca in action on Sunday against Real Sociedad and able to reclaim top spot with a win.<o:p></o:p>

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti picked a strong line up, with no breathing room in the title race, despite the impending Champions League clash against rivals Atletico.<o:p></o:p>
"If we play like this on Tuesday we will not win," said Ancelotti, whose side have one win in their last five Liga matches.<o:p></o:p>
The visitors took the lead at the Benito Villamarin stadium through Brahim Diaz but Betis struck back with a Johnny Cardoso header, as Real Madrid missed the suspended Jude Bellingham.<o:p></o:p>
Isco secured the Andalusian side a deserved victory with a penalty early in the second half.<o:p></o:p>
"It's a big blow. We have to react," continued Ancelotti. "We started well, but later we did not have the same level of commitment, the game got out of control against a side that played better than us and deserved to win."<o:p></o:p>
Isco returned to action in December after missing several months with a broken leg and has hit top form in recent weeks.<o:p></o:p>
"About halfway through the first half we stepped up our game, and I'm happy with the win against the best team around these days," said the playmaker, who won several major trophies with Real Madrid before departing in 2022.<o:p></o:p>
Madrid started the stronger and opened the scoring after just 10 minutes, putting together a fine team move with 19 passes.<o:p></o:p>
It culminated when Kylian Mbappe found Ferland Mendy, who squared for Diaz to tuck home.<o:p></o:p>
Betis soon found their footing and Cardoso powered a header past Thibaut Courtois from Isco's corner to level.<o:p></o:p>
Without Bellingham's dynamism in midfield Madrid were outfought by Betis.<o:p></o:p>
Manuel Pellegrini's side took the lead early in the second half from the penalty spot when Antonio Rudiger crashed into Jesus Rodriguez as he ran in on goal.<o:p></o:p>
Isco smashed home for his sixth goal across all competitions.<o:p></o:p>
For the final 15 minutes, Ancelotti replaced Mbappe, who had dental trouble ahead of the game, with Endrick.<o:p></o:p>
"He had that (tooth) problem, he hadn't trained a lot," explained Ancelotti. "He was not at his best level."<o:p></o:p>
<h2>'Goddess of fortune'<o:p></o:p></h2>
Atletico Madrid held their nerve at the Metropolitano stadium to take a provisional lead in the title race. <o:p></o:p>
After substitute Alvarez struck, the Basque side hit the woodwork three times in the hunt for an equaliser.<o:p></o:p>
"It's an incredibly important win, we knew it would not be easy," Alvarez told Movistar. "We're in the fight for the title, but we know there's a long way to go, a lot of very important games are coming close together, but with hard work and humility we'll achieve (our goals)."<o:p></o:p>
Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak made a fine save to deny Inaki Williams early on, in an even first half.<o:p></o:p>
The Rojiblancos have often relied on their substitutes making huge impacts this season and so it proved again as they opened the scoring.<o:p></o:p>
Simeone brought on Marcos Llorente and Alvarez just before the hour mark and the duo combined to open the scoring after 66 minutes.<o:p></o:p>
Llorente delivered a fine low pass for the former Manchester City striker to run on to, and he finished with minimal fuss for his eighth league goal of the campaign.<o:p></o:p>
Athletic came millimetres away from an equaliser when Benat Prados headed against the post with Oblak beaten and Williams crashed the rebound off the underside of the crossbar and out.<o:p></o:p>
"In the second half our changes helped us, Oblak too, and the goddess of fortune with the shots that hit the post and the bar," said Atletico coach Simeone.<o:p></o:p>
Ghana international Williams hit the woodwork once again with a deflected strike from range and Athletic left frustrated.<o:p></o:p>
"I think we deserved a lot more, we had more chances than them, but it's not about who deserves what, it's about putting them away," Williams told Movistar.<o:p></o:p>

FA Cup: Crystal Palace's Mateta gets 25 stitches after 'reckless' kick to head

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish branded the challenge by Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts that left Jean Philippe-Mateta in hospital as "the most reckless" he has ever seen.
<h2>Jean Philippe-Mateta in hospital</h2>
Roberts was sent-off just eight minutes into Saturday's FA Cup fifth round tie, which Palace won 3-1, after catching Mateta's head with his boot as he raced out to clear the ball.
Referee Michael Oliver only issued a red card after a VAR review.
Mateta received lengthy treatment, including oxygen, on the pitch before being stretchered to an ambulance and transported to hospital.
"What we know, he's got a bad gash behind his ear and a head injury. Obviously he's at the hospital. So, we hope for the best," Parish told the BBC.
"That is the most reckless challenge on a football pitch I think I've ever seen and I think he needs to have a long hard look at himself, that lad, because he's endangering a fellow professional, maybe in his life, with a challenge like that."
Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed Mateta is conscious but that he has suffered a serious injury to his ear.
"He is conscious and he is in hospital. His ear looks terrible. It's a very serious injury so we hope all the best for him," said Glasner.
"We are not really happy, we can't be really happy. Of course, it's a great win and into the quarter-finals but when you lose a player, especially with a foul like this, you have two different feelings in your stomach."
Mateta had scored eight goals in his previous nine games and has 15 in total for Palace this season.
The 27-year-old also netted five times as France won silver at the Paris Olympics last year.
Parish drew comparisons to the famous clash between German goalkeeper Toni Schumacher and French forward Patrick Battiston at the 1982 World Cup.
"It's difficult for me to think about anything else at the moment with JP (Mateta) in hospital," added Parish.
"Somebody mentioned there was one in the World Cup in 1982 like it, but it's a dreadful challenge. And why the referee needed to go to the screen, I've got no idea."
Palace made use of the man advantage for virtually the whole game to book their place in the quarter-finals.
Japhet Tanganga's own goal broke the visitors resistence before Daniel Munoz prodded in a second.
Wes Harding pulled a goal back for the Lions, 13 minutes into first-half stoppage time added on for Mateta's treatment.
Palace were made to wait until 82 minutes to secure progress when Eddie Nketiah's looping header found the far corner.

The whole Burnley team refused to shake the hand of Preston forward Milutin Osmajic before kick-off after he was accused of making a racist comment towards Hannibal Mejbri when the sides met last month.
Mejbri was left out as Scott Parker made sweeping changes to his side, but Osmajic started and scored Preston's second goal, cupping his ear to the Burnley support in celebration.
Robbie Brady and Will Keane were also on target as Burnley's run of nine consecutive clean sheets came to an end.

"That is the most reckless challenge on a football pitch I think I've ever seen and I think he needs to have a long hard look at himself, that lad, because he's endangering a fellow professional, maybe in his life, with a challenge like that." Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed Mateta is conscious but that he has suffered a serious injury to his ear. "He is conscious and he is in hospital. His ear looks terrible. It's a very serious injury so we hope all the best for him," said Glasner. "We are not really happy, we can't be really happy. Of course, it's a great win and into the quarter-finals but when you lose a player, especially with a foul like this, you have two different feelings in your stomach." Mateta had scored eight goals in his previous nine games and has 15 in total for Palace this season. And why the referee needed to go to the screen, I've got no idea." Palace made use of the man advantage for virtually the whole game to book their place in the quarter-finals. Preston got the better of Burnley 3-0 in all-Championship tie to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 1966 in another controversial clash. ALSO READ | Champions Trophy: Shami likely to be rested against NZ; Arshdeep to replace him- Reports The whole Burnley team refused to shake the hand of Preston forward Milutin Osmajic before kick-off after he was accused of making a racist comment towards Hannibal Mejbri when the sides met last month. Donald Trump said Friday he would posthumously pardon Pete Rose, the baseball great who was banned for life for betting on games and later jailed for tax evasion.
The US president also reiterated his call for Rose -- who died last year aged 83 and was Major League Baseball's all-time hit king -- to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.&nbsp;
<h2>Donald Trump to posthumously pardon Pete Rose</h2>
"Over the next few weeks I will be signing a complete PARDON of Pete Rose, who shouldn't have been gambling on baseball, but only bet on HIS TEAM WINNING," Trump said on his Truth Social platform.
"Baseball, which is dying all over the place, should get off its fat, lazy ass, and elect Pete Rose, even though far too late, into the Baseball Hall of Fame!" he added.
Nicknamed "Charlie Hustle" for his hard-charging effort and dogged determination, Rose set MLB career records including 4,256 hits.
But he left the sport in disgrace when he was permanently banned from American baseball in 1989 for gambling on games as a manager for the Cincinnati Reds.
Two years later, the Baseball Hall of Fame voted to exclude consideration of players on the permanent ban list, making Rose unable to join the shrine of legends.

Rose denied for years that he had gambled on baseball but in 2004 admitted he bet on Reds games, saying he always bet on his team to win, never on them to lose.
The baseball star also spent five months in prison in 1990 and early 1991 for tax evasion.&nbsp;

Jos Buttler quits as England's white-ball captain after champions trophy exit

Liverpool on Friday posted a loss before tax of &pound;57 million ($72 million) for the 2023/24 season as their Champions League absence and soaring administrative costs took a toll.
But the Premier League club's overall revenue rose by &pound;20 million to &pound;614 million, with commercial revenue climbing by &pound;36 million to &pound;308 million.
<h2>Liverpool post $72mn loss</h2>
After a loss of &pound;9 million in the previous season, a &pound;38 million drop in media revenue for 2023/24 contributed to a second straight campaign in the red.
It was the first season since 2016/17 in which the club did not play in the Champions League, Europe's top club competition.
Matchday income rose by &pound;22 million thanks to the opening of the new Anfield Road stand but staff costs -- primarily wages and associated bonuses -- increased by &pound;13 million to &pound;386 million.
That was partly due to bonuses for Champions League qualification and a League Cup win during Jurgen Klopp's final season at Anfield.
Pay-offs to cover the time remaining on the contracts of Klopp and his backroom staff when they left amounted to &pound;9.6 million.
Liverpool finished third in the Premier League and reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and Europa League in 2023/24.
The wage bill was eased by the departure of a number of higher earners including Roberto Firmino, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson.
The club added Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch to their senior men's squad for a combined figure of around &pound;150 million.
"Operating a financially sustainable club continues to be our priority and, with the continued increase in costs, it's essential to grow income streams year on year to maintain financial stability," said finance officer Jenny Beacham.
