India’s Olympic medal hopes suffered huge dents on Wednesday (Aug 7) after star wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the 50kg freestyle wrestling category at the Paris Games. Vinesh on Wednesday morning was found 100 grams overweight which forms the grounds for her disqualification from the 50kg category. Here is a detailed look into why the wrestler was disqualified and what went wrong for the Indian grappler.
Vinesh Phogat disqualified
Vinesh upset the odds on Tuesday with a 3-2 victory over defending Olympic champion Yui Susaki, snapping her 82-match winning streak in the process. Vinesh would later go on to defeat Ukraine’s Oksana Livach 7-5 in the quarter-finals followed by a clincal 5-0 victory over Cuba’s Yusneylys Guzman. She was to face United States’ Sarah Hildebrandt in the final with an eye on a historic gold medal in the women’s 50kg freestyle wrestling, but will now return empty-handed.
According to Olympic wrestling manuals, wrestlers are required to fulfill strict weight criteria, meaning no wrestler can be overweight or underweight. As per the first-hand report, Vinesh was found 100 grams overweight, meaning she became ineligible to compete in the final. The rule book also states that wrestlers are required to measure their weight before they enter the bouts.

Vinesh was fit for the 50kg freestyle category on Tuesday, however, she gained 100 grams of weight overnight due to diet and nutritional reasons (a common occurrence). Shefailed to balance the weight resulting in her being overweight during the official measure on Wednesday leading to the disqualification.

As per manuals, the 29-year-old was eligible for Tuesday bouts meaning had the final of the 50kg freestyle wrestling category taken place on the same day, she could have won a medal. However, since the bouts took place on different days, the grapplers needed to weigh again and Vinesh remained unfortunate. Interestingly, in earlier Olympics, the wrestling matches would take place on the same day, meaning in previous editions Vinesh would have ended with at least a silver medal.
