Mercedes driver George Russell secures the win at Austrian Grand Prix
George Russell sneaked in a top podium finish at the Austrian Grand Prix after Max Verstappen and Lando Norris dramatically collided at the fag end of the race to gift the position to the Mercedes driver. McLaren's Oscar Piastricame in home P2 while Ferrari's Carlos Sainz held off Lewis Hamilton to secure the final podium position.
It was a disappointing home race for Red Bull and championship leader Verstappen whohad to settle for the fifth position after being handed a 10-second penalty for allegedly making late moves under braking. Meanwhile, Norris was forced to retire after the back-and-forth battle with Verstappen led to a destroyed right rear for the McLaren car.
The incident transpired on uphill Turn 3 with seven laps to go in the 71-lap contest. Norris went to the left of Verstappen to take the racing line but the front right of Norris collided with the rear left of Verstappen. However, afterwards, the Dutch driver could be seen veering towards the left which caused significant damage to Norris' car.
Prior to the collision, Norris also received a five-second penalty fortraversing track limits which ultimately counted for nothing as he had to retire the car.

Immediately after the collision, Mercedes team principal, Toto Wolff, could be heard telling Russell that he might just win the race, only to be shushed by the Briton, who dropped the 'F-bomb'.
A short 'Virtual Safety Car' ensured that Russell retained the leader despite a rampaging Piastri, attempting to cut the three-second deficit at the end of the race.
"Incredible, it was a tough fight, starting in third. I was watching on the big screen and knew Lando would try and get that race win, but the team has done a great job to get us in the fight," said Russell after the win.
"So proud to be back on the top step," added the British driver, who notched up Mercedes' last win in Brazil in 2022.
After Sunday's dramatic race, the action now moves to the crown jewel of the F1 circuit - the British Grand Prix at Silverstone next weekend. McLaren and Red Bull are expected to go toe-to-toe yet again as the gap has increasingly narrowed between Norris and Verstappen.
