The Indian Army will start training 100 women soldiers from December this year for their eventual induction into the Corps of Military Police.

The training period will be of 61 weeks, same as that for male soldiers. The Army plans to train 100 soldiers every year until it reaches a cadre strength of 1,700.

Army sources told ANI on Monday that the cadre will be maintained at 1,700 unless and until reviewed.

"Wastage, as we call it due to various reasons including medical, will be catered for during future inductions as we go along," they said.

This comes even as Colonel Commandant of the Military Police, Lt Gen Ashwani Kumar interviewed Lt Col Nandani in Srinagar for the role of instructor.

The Army has dug deep for the selection of instructors for training women soldiers in the force.

"The first batch is most important to us as it will lay down the foundation for generations to come. Another officer is Maj Julie who was an instructor to the first batch of women constables in Assam Rifles," Lt Gen Kumar, Adjutant General of the Indian Army, said.

On August 28, ANI had reported that preparations are underway for receiving and training the first-ever batch of women soldiers in the Corps of Military Police.

The decks for the induction were cleared in January this year after then Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that the government has taken a "historic" decision to induct women in the Military Police with an aim to enhancing their representation in the three services.

Women will be inducted in a graded manner to eventually comprise 20 per cent of the total Corps of Military Police and their role would range from probing crime cases to assisting the Army in field operations wherever required.

Last year, Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat had said the process to allow women in a combat role, currently, an exclusive domain of men was moving fast and initially, women will be recruited for positions in the Military Police.

Currently, women are allowed in select areas such as medical, legal, educational, signals and engineering wings of the Army.

The role of the Military Police includes policing cantonments and Army establishments, preventing the breach of rules and regulations by soldiers, maintaining movement of soldiers as well as logistics during peace and war, handling prisoners of war and extending aid to civil police.

As per government data, the Army has 3.80 per cent of its workforce as women, the Air Force has 13.09 per cent and the Navy 6 per cent.

The names of 19 members of the family of a freedom fighter were allegedly left out of the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) list in Assam, according to his grandson.

"My grandfather Ahmed Ali was a freedom fighter. He was in the British Army for a year and later joined the Indian freedom movement. Despite belonging to his family, whose name is itself a proof of being an Indian citizen, we were left out of the final NRC list," Abdul Samad Chowdhury told ANI on Monday.

He said that 19 members of his family were excluded from the final list whereas the names of his mother and sister figured in the draft as well as the final list despite having all documents.

"It is humiliating and shocking for me and my family," he said.

A resident of Kaurbaha village of Guwahati district, Chowdhury is also a leader of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).

"We also went to Nagrik Sewa Kendra (NSK) in Nagaon with all of our family members. The officials told us to produce school pass certificates and assured us that the issue will be sorted soon. However, we were not included in the final list either," Chowdhury added.

The family has also urged the government and NRC authorities to reconsider including in the list the names of people who have proper documents.

Over 19 lakh people were excluded from the final NRC list that was published on Saturday.

However, those excluded can still apply to the designated Foreigners' Tribunals within 120 days for their cases to be heard.

"A total of 3,11,21,004 persons are found eligible for inclusion in final NRC, leaving out 19,06,657 persons, including those who did not submit their claims," NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajela had said.

The list is aimed at segregating Indian citizens living in Assam from those who had illegally entered the state from Bangladesh after 1971.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be undertaking a two-day visit to Russia from September 4 during which he will take part in the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) meeting and will also hold a bilateral summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Talking to reporters about the visit, Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale said that two countries have a "special relationship" and the Prime Minister has emphasised on broadening relations with Russia beyond civil nuclear energy and defence to other areas of the economy.

He said oil and gas were among major areas of interest for India and one of the objectives did not have a dependence on any one country or region for imports.

Gokhale said Modi's visit to Vladivostok for the Eastern Economic Forum meeting as one of the chief guests was a signal of the importance that India attaches to the Russian Far East, an area about which India has had few links in the past.

He said India was also looking at the possibility of manpower exports.

"We are exploring the possibility of sending people with some skills in areas wherever there is manpower shortage. That is not limited to just Far East of Russia. This is an effort we are making in a number of countries. This is one area where we feel there is good potential," he said.

Gokhale said the proposal was at an early stage and there has been an encouraging response from Russia.

Noting that most of Russian Far East are either minerals sector or agricultural sector, he said, "We are not yet at the stage of implementing it immediately."

"We will proceed to explore it once the visit is over. It is important for us and we will give it a priority to this," he said.

Answering a query about the proposal to build a shipping link between Chennai and Vladivostok, he said there will be no immediate announcement of a shipping service between the two cities.

"There is a recognition that alternative route to Europe through the northern route is now a possibility and we should look at in terms of economic benefits it might bring us with the northeast of Asia and beyond," he said, adding that a lot of oil and gas finds were in the region.

"It is the start of a process. It will take a while," he said.

Gokhale said Modi will arrive at Vladivostok on September 4 morning and depart on September 5 evening.

Answering a query, he said Modi and Putin will discuss defence ties between the two countries but no announcements were expected.

Low-cost airlines IndiGo and SpiceJet are set to start their partial domestic operations from Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) Airport from September 5, the GMR-led Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) said on Monday.

While Indigo will shift a portion of its operations from T2 to T3, SpiceJet will shift all of its domestic flights operating from T2 to T3.

Post the shift, SpiceJet flights SG 8000 to SG 8999 and IndiGo flights 6E 5000 to 6E 5999 will operate out of T3. IndiGo flights 6E 2000 to 6E 2999 will operate from T2. The operations of SpiceJet and IndiGo at T1 will continue as before.

"Shifting of some domestic flights of IndiGo and all SpiceJet flights from T2 to T3 will help in easing the pressure of fast-growing passenger traffic to carry out the capacity enhancement work of T2 effectively and efficiently," said DIAL`s Chief Operating Officer Videh Kumar Jaipuriar.

At present. GoAir fully and SpiceJet and IndiGo partially operate their respective domestic flights from T2 while Air India, Vistara and Air Asia India operate completely out of T3.

A total of 184 flights now operate from T3. With the proposed shifting, the number of flights at T3 will go up to 240 which include 24 IndiGo and 32 SpiceJet flights.

The move will result in a reduction of passenger load at T2 by up to 27 per cent which will enable the airport operator to enhance the passenger capacity of T2.

Post completion of capacity enhancement of T2, the terminal will be able to handle 18 million passengers per annum (MPPA), up from the current 15 MPPA. This will further enhance the passenger comfort and experience, DIAL said in a statement.

India has been demanding consular access to Jadhav for the last three years but Pakistan had repeatedly denied it following his conviction by a military court on charges of espionage after a sham trial. Before the meeting, Ahluwalia was quoted as saying ''We hope Pakistan will ensure right atmosphere so that the meeting is free, fair, meaningful and effective in keeping with the letter and spirit of the Internation Court of Justice (ICJ) orders''. India went to the ICJ which ruled with a majority of 15-1 that Pakistan should grant consular access. In its verdict On July 17, President of the International Court of Justice Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf said,"Islamic Republic of Pakistan is under an obligation to inform Kulbhushan Sudhir Jadhav without further delay of his rights and to provide Indian consular officers access to him in accordance with Article 36 of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations" The Court declared that Pakistan is under an obligation to inform Jadhav without further "delay of his rights." It had stated that a Pakistani official will be present during the meeting between India's consular staff and Jadhav, and the entire meeting will be recorded by a CCTV camera. India had rejected that offer stating it was against the Vienna Convention, which guarantees unimpeded consular access. This is the second time Pakistan had made the offer and agreed to do so in line with the Vienna conventions on consular relations. However, India approached the offer with caution as when Jadhav's mother and wife were allowed to meet him, it was done with a glass screen between them. And later the entire episode was used by Pakistan for propaganda. It's still not clear if any Pakistani diplomat was present in the room when the meet happened. India maintains that Jadhav is a retired naval officer, who was illegally abducted by Pakistan from Iran, where he was running a business. This is the first time that 49-year-old has been granted consular access.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday demanded an explanation from interim Congress President Sonia Gandhi on party leader Digvijaya Singh's allegation that the BJP and Bajrang Dal were taking money from Pakistan's intelligence agency - Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

Calling Congress an 'agent' of Pakistan, BJP leader Sambit Patra said that statements made by Congress leaders found resonance in Pakistan.

"Who coined 'Saffron terror'. When Sushil Kumar Shinde was Home Minister in the presence of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, he alleged that RSS gives training to terrorists. Sonia Gandhi allegedly cried for days over the killings in Batla House. It has been written by a Congress leader. Rahul Gandhi spoke about Muslim brotherhood which he equated with RSS," Patra said.

He alleged that Congress has always worked on 'anti-Hindu" philosophy'.

"I want to know how Singh got details about who is getting money from ISI? Congress has always worked to divide the country into communal lines. On the issue of abrogation of Article 370 Bhubaneswar Kalita, a former Congress chief whip in Rajya Sabha wrote in his letter that if Congress wants to commit suicide no one can help it," Patra said.

"The nine jewels of Congress include Rahul Gandhi, Mani Shankar Aiyar, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Salman Khurshid, Digvijaya Singh, Sam Pitroda and Ghulam Nabi Azad. They are working against the nation. Their statements were quoted in Pakistan," stated Patra.

On India getting consular access to Kulbhushan Jadhav, currently lodged in a Pakistan jail, Patra said that the credit should go to the Narendra Modi government for making it possible.

"Since I am not authorised to speak on it, I would say Modi hai to Mumkin hai," added Patra.

Speaking on violence against BJP cadre in West Bengal, Patra said it is "murder" of democracy in the state by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

BJP seeks Sonia Gandhi's explanation over Digvijaya Singh's charge

As India accepted Pakistan`s offer for consular access to Kulbhushan Jadhav, his friends hoped for his safe return to India. Jadhav is facing a death row in Pakistan on alleged spying charges.

"We are very positive about Kulbhushan ji soon getting released. It`s a welcome move by Pakistan to give consular access. The only thing is that it should be unconditional. We have very high hope that soon he will be released," Arvind Singh, a friend of Kulbhushan, told ANI.

Another friend, named Tulsidas Pawar said, "If the Government of India will continue to take up this matter strictly with Pakistan, then Kulbhushan Jadhav will return home soon. Blessings of his parents and friends are with him. We are waiting for him to return."

The Indian national was even denied the right to be defended by a legal counsel of his choice. India contended that it was not informed of Jadhav`s detention until long after his arrest and that Pakistan had failed to inform the former naval officer of his rights.

Pakistani security forces claim Jadhav was arrested from Balochistan, even as he was kidnapped from Iran, where he owned a cargo business. Jadhav was sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court on April 11, 2017. India, on May 8, 2017, approached the ICJ against Pakistan "for egregious violations of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, 1963" in the matter. The Indian national was even denied the right to be defended by a legal counsel of his choice. India contended that it was not informed of Jadhav`s detention until long after his arrest and that Pakistan had failed to inform the former naval officer of his rights.

At least six tourists, including a Kenyan tour guide and five Indian nationals, were killed when their van was swept away by sudden flash floods in the town of Naivasha on Sunday, the police said.

Quoting Rift Valley regional police commander Marcus Ochola, Xinhua news agency confirmed that the incident occurred at the Hell's Gate National Park.

"The guides did not read the weather of the surroundings. They know the killer waters usually originate from the highlands but didn't read this. We are there searching for possible survivors," Ochola told Xinhua.

Residents said one of the survivors alerted officers from Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) manning the park, after managing to escape from the raging floods in the gorges.

According to local authorities, the incident occurred at around 4pm (local time), after rains pounded the areas of Mt. Longonot and Kingdom.

Ochola said search and rescue efforts were underway but water levels were high in the gorges, slowing down the process.

He added that more police officers have been deployed in the park to join the search and rescue team.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife said that an unknown number of tourists are feared to have drowned in flash floods while others survived.

"The ministry of tourism and wildlife is coordinating government agencies in a search and rescue operation. Our hearts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of those who died in the tragedy," the ministry added in a statement.

Union Minister of Heavy Industries and Shiv Sena MP, Arvind Sawant, lauded the government's decision to conduct the National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise in Assam and demanded implementation of the same in "Mumbai" as well.

"NRC was much needed in Assam to solve the problems of the original inhabitants of the region. That is why we supported the NRC move by the government and want a similar exercise to be held in Mumbai to drive out the Bangladeshis living here, once the process is over in Assam," Sawant told reporters here on Saturday.

Hailing the Central government's decision, Sawant added, "The NRC move in Assam will make it possible to find out how many people from Bangladesh are living in the state illegally. It was very important to conduct it there. It was a matter of national security."

The final list of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam was published on Saturday with a little over 19 lakh people not being included in it.

Prateek Hajela, the State Coordinator of NRC, said that over three crore people were found eligible for inclusion in the final NRC.

"A total of 3,11,21,004 persons are found eligible for inclusion in final NRC, leaving out 19,06,657 persons, including those who did not submit their claims," Hajela said in a statement.

He said those who were not satisfied with the outcome of the claims can appeal before the Foreigners' Tribunals.

Former NASA astronaut Donald A Thomas has said that when India's ambitious lunar mission Chandrayaan 2 will land on the surface of the moon then everyone at America's space agency and people around the world would be watching it.

The landing of Chandrayaan 2 spacecraft is scheduled to land on the surface of the moon on September 7.

"Chandrayaan 2 will be the first spacecraft to land near the South pole of the moon and this is where NASA hopes to land astronaut in about five years from now. Not just NASA, but the whole world would be interested in knowing about the moon and the universe by following Chandrayaan -2," he said.

Thomas said while speaking to reporters after attending an event at Park College of Engineering and Technology near Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu.

He explained, "We have landed near the equator of the moon before but never at the South Pole. The South pole is a very special location, we think there is ice in some of the craters that are permanently shadowed."

"If we find ice there then we can have water and from that Oxygen and Hydrogen," he added.

On being asked about the conditions on the moon, the former NASA astronaut said, "The moon is a tough place to live. There is a lot of radiation out there. At day time temperature there could reach 100 degrees Celcius and during night time minus 100 degrees Celcius."

Chandrayaan 2 will be the first Indian expedition to attempt a soft landing on the lunar surface. This mission will make India, the fourth country after the US, Russia, and China to carry out a soft landing on the moon.

After revolving around the earth's orbit for nearly 23 days, the craft began its journey to the moon on August 14.

The mission took off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota on July 22.
