In a major boost to the Indian Air Force, eight Boeing AH- 64E Apache Guardian Attack Helicopters were inducted into the force on Tuesday.

IAF chief Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa inducted the choppers officially into the service after a ceremony held at the Pathankot Air Force Station.

Eight helicopters have been inducted into the air force in the first batch out of the 22 procured from the US. In September 2015, IAF had signed a contract with US Government and Boeing for these Apache helicopters.

The delivery of the whole lot is expected to be completed by 2020, as stated in the contract.

The helicopters have been customized to suit the force's future requirements and would have significant capability in mountainous terrain with the capability to carry out precision attacks at standoff ranges and operate in hostile airspace with threats from the ground.

The aircraft can transmit and receive battlefield pictures to and from the weapon systems through data networking making it a lethal acquisition. These helicopters will provide a significant edge in any future joint operations in support of land forces.

The Apaches are equipped with hellfire missiles and rockets, with one helicopter having the capacity to carry 8 such missiles. It also has a canon gun with 1200 rounds of firing capacity at a time along with which two missile pods carrying 19 missiles each can be fixed. The attack helicopter can also be used for reconnaissance.

The US has delivered around 2200 Apache helicopters to various countries of the world. India is its 16th customer, Boeing said.
Importantly, some of the major components of these machines have been made in India.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered maintenance of status quo in the INX Media case and directed that the CBI custody of arrested Congress leader and former Union finance minister P Chidambaram be extended till September 5. During proceedings, the counsel appearing for the investigating agency submitted before a bench of Justices R Banumathi and A S Bopanna that they do not want his custody, indicating that he should be sent to Tihar jail. The bench was hearing the petition filed by the Congress leader challenging his CBI custody. Chidambaram`s lawyers -- Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi -- told the court that they will not press the petition for interim bail in the trial court until the apex court passes the order on September 5. Chidambaram was sent to CBI custody by the trial court for one day, yesterday. After the Delhi High Court rejected Chidambaram`s anticipatory bail plea on August 20, he was arrested and sent to the CBI`s custody. He has already been subjected to custodial interrogation by the agency for 12 days since then. Chidambaram is facing probe in cases registered by the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on alleged irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance given to INX Media to the tune of Rs 305 crore in 2007 when he was the Union finance minister. The ED is also seeking his custodial interrogation related to money laundering allegations. The Supreme Court, however, has granted him interim protection from arrest by the ED till September 5.

A senior US Navy official termed the induction of American-made Apache choppers into the Indian Air Force as a great day for defence ties of the two countries.

US Navy Captain Daniel E. Fillion, from the Office of Defense Cooperation, on Tuesday expressed happiness over the induction of Apache attack helicopters in the IAF.

"United States is very happy on attending the induction ceremony. It's a great day for US-India bilateral defence relationship," he said while talking to ANI.

The defence relationship between the two countries have been growing with several deals in the pipeline. The two countries are also said to be negotiating the sale of surveillance drones.

India has purchased several defence equipment including M777 Howitzers, P-8I aircraft for Indian Navy, C-17 Globemaster, Chinook heavy-lift transport choppers from the United States in recent years.

The two countries have also signed Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement (LEMOA), for mutual logistics support.

In addition to that, US F-16 fighter jets are also a contender for the IAF's 114 fighter jet programme.

The US has delivered around 2200 Apache helicopters to various countries of the world. India is its 16th customer, Boeing said.

Importantly, some of the major components of these machines have been made in India.

Pakistan on Sunday offered to provide consular access to Kulbhushan Jadhav on September 2.

Kulbhushan Jadhav is a retired Indian Navy officer sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court in 2017 on the charges of "espionage and terrorism".

The consular access to Jadhav will be given in accordance with Vienna Convention on Consular relations.

Earlier, Pakistan had offered consular access on August 1, but with conditions - that one Pakistani official would be present alongside.

On August 2, India had asked Pakistan to provide "unimpeded consular access" to Jadhav, in an environment "free from the fear of intimidation and reprisal", after Islamabad said it has sent a proposal to New Delhi allowing consular access to the Indian national.

The ICJ in its ruling on July 17 had put on continued stay the death sentence handed to Jadhav by a Pakistani military court for alleged espionage.

The ICJ had asked Pakistan to immediately inform Jadhav of his rights under Article 36 of the Vienna Convention, and grant India consular access.
