Speaking at the photo exhibition event of Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest, organised by Russian International News Agency Sputnik, Zee News and WION Editor-in-Chief Sudhir Chaudhary said that India's relationship with Russia "was first cemented by pictures" but of another kind.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday conducted searches at Thanjavur and Tiruchirapalli districts in connection with a Tamil Nadu-Kerala ISIS module case.

The searches were conducted based on the warrants issued by Ernakulam's special NIA court. In June earlier this year, a raid was conducted in Coimbatore following which two people, namely, Mohammed Azarudheen and Shiek Hidayathulla were arrested.

Today, the search was conducted at the associates of the two arrested accused. The NIA recovered digital devices including two laptops, six mobile phones, one pen drive, one hard disc, one memory card, one axe and seventeen documents from the spot.

"The seized items including the digital devices will be submitted to the NIA Special Court, Ernakulam, and the digital devices will be sent for forensic examination," it stated.

Hours after newly-sworn in Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray ordered to stop the work on Aarey metro car shed project, Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray on Friday asserted that the development will continue in the state but without harming the environment.

Speaking to ANI, Aditya said, "All the people in Mumbai are happy with this decision. Development work will continue but the harm that was being done to the environment will be stopped."

Earlier today, the Maharashtra Government passed an order to stop the work on the Aarey metro car shed project, over which trees were felled in October.

"I have ordered to stop the work of Aarey metro car shed project today. Metro work will not stop but till next decision, not a single leaf of Aarey will be cut," the Chief Minister said at a press conference earlier in the day.

A massive controversy had erupted in October over the felling of trees for the construction of a metro car shed in Mumbai's Aarey area, which is considered the lungs of the city.

The felling of trees in the area had drawn a wedge between former allies BJP and Shiv Sena, with then chief minister Devendra Fadnavis pushing for the project and the Thackeray-led party coming out in protest of the proposed car shed.

Over 2,185 trees were razed in the area in concurrence with the Bombay High Court's order which had upheld the permission granted to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) tree authority to cut down trees to make a metro-car shed.

In pursuance of the widespread protests which erupted after the felling of trees in Mumbai's Aarey colony, the apex court late in October ordered the Maharashtra government not to axe any more trees and maintain the status quo till further orders.

If Abe visited Imphal, he would become the first Japanese PM to arrive in the north-eastern city. The sources added that the Japanese prime minister will also pay a visit to Imphal Peace Museum (IPM), which was opened in June to mark the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Imphal. The museum, which is 20 km southwest of Imphal and spread on 10 acres of land at the foothill of Red Hill, exhibits war artefacts and personal belongings of Japanese troops.

The Battle of Imphal is considered as one of the bloodiest battles fought during the second world war, where more than 30,000 Japanese troops were killed.

The Japanese PM will also hold talks with his Indian counterpart PM Modi regarding the acquisition and cross-servicing agreement, or ACSA, which seeks to enable both the nations to share defence capabilities and supplies. Meanwhile, India and Japan are also expected to hold their first 2+2 ministerial meeting later this week regarding the signing of ACSA.

India and Japan have deepened their bilateral ties in recent years and both Modi and Abe have made reciprocal visits.

Abe is scheduled to arrive in India on December 15, however, the Indian government is yet to confirm the date and places of Abe's visit. The Japanese PM is also likely to visit China late in December for a meeting with Japanese, Chinese and South Korean leaders.

In a significant development, security forces have found that terrorists are using satellite phones to communicate. Internet and prepaid mobile connectivity in Kashmir remain shut since August 5, ever since the central government revoked the special status for J&K residents.

Sources in the Jammu and Kashmir Police told WION that during the Gandarbal operation last month, one Thuraya satellite phone was recovered from the terrorists and later a satellite phone location was detected in the Anchar area of Soura in Srinagar.

In September, the Indian Army had launched a massive operation in the mountains of Gandarbal, killing two terrorists and later arresting two overground workers. The operation continued for almost 20 days.

A senior police officer, while confirming the recovery of a satellite phone, told WION that "a satellite phone was recovered from the terrorists in Gandarbal district of central Kashmir after they were eliminated."

"It seems that terrorists are adapting the old communication tactics," the top police officer said while speaking over the phone, adding that "a location was traced last week around Soura area of Srinagar, leading security forces to launch a search operation".

On November 17, a cordon and search operation was launched in the Anchar area of Soura after the satellite phone location was traced by the counter-insurgency group in the valley.

The police source said that these modern satellite phones are internet-enabled which connects directly to the satellite from any location, unlike the common mobile phones that connect to the terrestrial mobile sites. Authorities had provided high-ranking officials with satellite phones when communication was completely shut in Jammu and Kashmir.

However, the use of satellite phones isn't new in Kashmir. After terrorism erupted in Kashmir, in the absence of mobile communication, terrorists used Thuraya satellite phones to speak with their counterparts and operators based in Pakistan and in the valley.

Due to the partial mobile communication shutdown and the internet gag, terrorists have been finding it hard to communicate. After mobile internet became widely available in Kashmir, terrorists were using mobile applications which are hard to detect by the anti-terrorism groups. This led to a decrease in the use of satellite phones.

Several such types of equipment have been recovered from time to time especially from the groups attempting to infiltrate the Line of Control (LoC) between India and Pakistan. The communication shutdown had also affected the counter-insurgency operation in the union territory leading to a few encounters.

On September 19, the J&K police had arrested a foreign national who was illegally using Thuraya satellite phone in Ladakh.

An order to stop the work on the Aarey metro car shed project was passed by newly sworn-in Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Friday.

"I have ordered to stop the work of Aarey metro car shed project today. Metro work will not stop but till next decision, not a single leaf of Aarey will be cut," he said at a press conference.

Back in October, the felling of trees in the Aarey Colony had drawn a wedge between former allies BJP and Shiv Sena, with then chief minister Devendra Fadnavis pushing for the project and the Thackeray-led party coming out in protest of the proposed car shed.

"It is going on in my mind, what I can do for the city," Thackery said at his presser today, adding that he was the first chief minister who was born in Mumbai.

Over 2,185 trees were razed in the area in concurrence with the Bombay High Court's order which had upheld the permission granted to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) tree authority to cut down trees to make a metro-car shed.

DMK chief MK Stalin on Friday slammed the Centre and the state government over engineers applying for the jobs of sanitary workers and urged them to examine unemployment and layoffs in IT sector.

"There is a peak in unemployment. It`s a curse on Tamil Nadu with no creation of industries and jobs. I urge the Centre and the state government to check the unemployment and layoffs in IT sector," Stalin said at a press conference.

"Already IT companies in Tamil Nadu are laying off employees citing many artificial reasons. Reports have stated that 40,000 IT employees will lose jobs across India and this is worrisome," he said.

As many as 7,000 graduates including engineers have applied for 549 posts of sanitary workers advertised by the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC).

Talking about the local body election, Stalin said the AIADMK was postponing the poll.

"For more than three years, the AIADMK has been trying to postpone the local body election. Media is blaming the DMK for this. We have approached the court for clarification in the electoral roll. We want the election but in compliance with all electoral norms," added Stalin.

BJP MP from Bhopal, Pragya Singh Thakur on Friday reiterated in Lok Sabha that she had not called Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse a "deshbhakt" and expressed apology if someone had been hurt by her remarks.

Pragya, who is known for making controversial remarks, apologised for the second time in Lower House after the opposition members expressed dissatisfaction with her statement made earlier in the day.

"On November 27 during the discussion on SPG bill, I did not call Nathuram Godse 'deshbhakt', did not take his name. Even then if someone has been hurt, I express regret and seek an apology," she said earlier in the day.

However, Thakur had to be checked by Speaker amid interruptions by opposition members after she started speaking.

"I have tolerated many atrocities given by enemies..." she said in the beginning.

The second apology from Thakur came after the meeting of leaders in the House. In her apology in the House earlier, Pragya also raked up of being called terrorist by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Gandhi had on November 27 tweeted, "Terrorist Pragya calls terrorist Godse, a patriot. A sad day, in the history of India`s Parliament."

"If any of my remarks in the House have hurt anyone, I express regret for that and apologise. But I also want to say that my words in the House have been twisted and presented wrongly. My remarks had different context which were wrongly presented. The way my words have been twisted, it is condemnable," she said.

"I respect the service done by Mahatma Gandhi for the country. I want to tell the House that a member has publicly called me a terrorist. Despite the conspiracies of the then government against me, no charge has been proved against me. Without charge having been proved, calling me a terrorist is against the law. Calling me terrorist without charges having been proved in an attempt to insult me as a woman, as a "sanyasi", as an MP, is an attack on my dignity," she said.

She alleged the then government had hatched conspiracy to torture her mentally.

The remarks had led to a ruckus in the House with opposition members strongly protesting her remarks. Thakur had made the remarks, which were now expunged when DMK member was speaking on SPG amendment bill in Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

India's wheat production could jump to a second consecutive annual record in 2020 as the wettest monsoon in 25 years is set to help farmers in expanding the area under the winter-sown crop while also boosting yields, industry officials said.

But that higher production would add to India's already swelling inventories, potentially forcing the world's second-biggest wheat producer to ramp up procurement of the grain from farmers and provide incentives for overseas sales to support local prices.

"The area under wheat and yields would rise due to good rainfall. We can certainly produce more than last year's record production," said Gyanendra Singh, director at the state-run Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research.

India grew 102.19 million tonnes of wheat in 2019.

The country received monsoon rains during the June-September season that were 10 per cent above average and the rainfall continued during October and November, increasing soil moisture levels required for crop sowing.
Rainfall also lifted the water level in India's key reservoirs to 86 per cent of capacity compared to 61 per cent a year ago and a 10-year average of 64%, according to government data.

Only one wheat crop is grown in India each year, with planting starting in late October and harvesting in March.

Farmers are inclined to expand the area under wheat as its prices are more stable than any other crop due to government buying, said Harish Galipelli, head of commodities and currencies at Inditrade Derivatives & Commodities in Mumbai.

New Delhi sets minimum support prices (MSP) for nearly two dozen crops to set a benchmark, but state agencies mainly buy rice and wheat at those prices. For 2020, India has lifted the price at which it buys locally produced new-season wheat by 4.6 per cent to 19,250 rupees ($268.22) a tonne.

"After the hike in MSP, wheat planting has become even more attractive for farmers," Galipelli said.

For the time being, dealers say wheat exports from India next year would be difficult because of their comparatively high cost.

With the new MSP setting, export prices would be above $300 a tonne on a free-on-board basis, while supplies from the competing countries are available below $250 a tonne, said one Mumbai-based dealer with a global trading firm.

"India could easily produce more than 100 million tones but could not export even 1 million tonnes unless the government provides subsidy for exports," the dealer said.

India exported 226,225 tonnes of wheat in the 2018/19 fiscal year that ended on March 31, compared to a record 6.5 million tonnes in 2012/13, according to government data.

Higher production and negligible exports could force the government to increase procurement from farmers to ensure prices stay at or above the MSP, said Galipelli at Inditrade.

Government wheat stocks stood at a record 37.4 million tonnes as of November 1, up 13 per cent from a year ago.

On Friday, Goa Forward Party president Vijay Sardesai urged the Opposition in Goa to come together as they did in Maharashtra. Sardesai's statements came after Shiv Sena's Sanjay Raut earlier claimed that Sardesai along with three other MLAs has agreed to form an alliance with Shiv Sena.

"A new political front is taking shape in Goa, as it was formed in Maharashtra. Soon, you will see some magic in Goa," Raut said.

Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVP) is the name given to the alliance between NCP, Congress and Shiv Sena in Maharashtra.

Raut also said that the party intends to form a non-BJP political front in the country. "It will happen across the country. After Maharashtra, it is Goa, then we will go to other states. We want to make a non-BJP political front in this country," Raut added.

It should be noted that Congress won the maximum number of seats in Goa in the Assembly elections in February 2017. But BJP came to power as it was supported by three MLAs each of Goa Forward Party, Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) and an independent MLA.

Congress had originally claimed 17 seats, while BJP ended up with 13 seats in the Assembly elections. However, 12 Congress MLAs later joined BJP, including 10 that joined in July this year led by Leader of Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar.

After 12 Congress detractors joined BJP, Goa Forward Party decided to take back its support from the government as three party leaders were stripped from the cabinet including Sardesai from the post of deputy CM.

Earlier on Thursday, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav took oath as Maharashtra CM as the party stitched an alliance with foe-turned-friends NCP and Congress. Uddhav Thackeray's oath came after BJP's Devendra Fadnavis resigned as CM three days after swearing as his party failed to get majority
support in order to form government in the state.
