He alleged the Rashtriya Janata Dal's (RJD) Bihar bandh turned violent at some places.

"Do Congress and RJD support violence so far as anti-CAA protests are concerned," he asked.

The announcement comes after a meeting of senior BJP leaders with the party's working president JP Nadda over the newly amended law, which grants citizenship to refugees of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, who arrived in India until December 31, 2014.

Answering a question with regard to the BJP ally JDU's announcement not to support the proposed NRC, he said that the CAA and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) are different issues. "JDU supported the CAA in Parliament. NRC and CAA are different. The NRC is an administrative issue," he said.

The Sabarimala review petitions will be now heard by a seven-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court in January 2020.

On December 13, the Supreme Court had said that its 2018 order on Sabarimala temple issue was "not final" as the matter is pending before a seven-judge bench, which, it had said, will be constituted soon.

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India S A Bobde had made these observations while passing an order on a petition filed by two activists -- Bindu Ammini and Fathima A S -- seeking safe passage for women inside the shrine.

"There is a judgment [allowing women entry] in the Sabarimala temple, but it is equally true that the issue has been referred to a larger Bench. We do not want any violence," the court had observed.

The apex court, however, granted police protection to the two activists. In November, a man had sprayed chili and pepper on Bindu's face when she was on her way to Sabarimala temple.

Fathima had also tried to enter the shrine. The apex court refused to pass any other order in connection to the matter.

The top court had last year allowed girls and women of all age groups to visit the Lord Ayyappa temple at Sabarimala in Kerala, following which a batch of review petitions was filed.

Allowing their review petitions, the court had last month referred the matter to a seven-judge bench.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's US visit caught attention due to an abruptly cancelled meeting with a US lawmaker.

Jaishankar was scheduled to meet the leaders of the US Senate as well as the leadership of the US House of Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC).

The Senate visit went ahead as planned but the meeting with the Congress leaders was abruptly cancelled due to the presence of Indian-American lawmaker Pramila Jayapal.

Jayapal has been a vocal critic of the current government in India. She even pushed for a resolution asking New Delhi to lift all restrictions in Jammu and Kashmir.

India has maintained that any matter related to Jammu and Kashmir is an internal matter and has rejected any foreign intervention.

On Thursday, Jaishankar had said that he has "no interest" in meeting Jayapal.

"I am aware of the draft resolution. I don`t think it is a fair understanding of the situation in Jammu and Kashmir or fair characterisation of what the Indian government is doing. I have no interest in meeting her," he said.

"No Foreign Minister of any independent country should be pressurised into meeting such politicians with their own agendas," MEA sources said as quoted by news agency ANI.

54-year-old Jayapal had introduced the resolution, co-sponsored by Republican Steve Watkins, that urges India to lift the communication clampdown, release political detainees and "preserve religious freedom for all residents" in Jammu and Kashmir.

Tamil Nadu: Protest continues in Chennai over the citizenship act

The diverse and the motley crowd protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and National Register of Citizens (NRC) have no idea what these terminologies are all about and their bizarre explanation ranges from "freeing Lalu Yadav from Jail" and terming CAA/NRC a "machine which produces Indian citizens".

The protesters rallying at the "Bihar-Bandh" call given by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) against the new law and proposed NRC, also said that the protest is against the rape of girls, and the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.

The crowd also consisted of children who were only sloganeering but drew a blank when asked what CAA and NRC are all about. However, when asked again, they started derogatory words on the top of their voices.

"We are protesting because Mahatma Gandhi was murdered. Godse (Nathuram Godse) murdered him. This government supports those who murdered Mahatma Gandhi," said a protester.

Another group of protesters said that they are protesting to free RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav from Jail and to install RJD government in the state.

"We are protesting because we want Lalu Prasad out of the Jail. We want RJD government to rule the state," said one among them.

While another protester who claims to be an RJD leader said he is protesting because girls are being raped and are set ablaze in Bihar.

"I am protesting because my supporters have garlanded me with 'Mala'. I am protesting because girls are being raped, women are being raped and are set ablaze in Bihar," said Nand Kishore Mandal who claims that he is a local RJD leader.

However, the most bizarre argument is of a person who said that CAA/NRC is a kind of machine that gives citizenship.

"CAA/NRC is the machine. These machines produce Indian citizens, they give citizenship," he said.

The CBI said that Lad had fled from Dubai to Cairo to avoid arrest. Later in June 2018, when he planned to return to India from Cairo, he was contacted by Nehal Modi on Nirav Modi's behalf and threatened.

"Investigation revealed that subsequent to the threatening call by Nirav Modi to Ashish Mohanbhai Lad... accused Nehal Modi offered Rs 20 lakh to Lad for visiting Europe to give a favourable statement before the lawyer and a judge in a European court to help Nirav Modi which was refused by Lad," the CBI said in the charge sheet.

Wanted diamantaire Nirav Modi was declared a fugitive economic offender earlier his month for evading prosecution in the scam.

Modi is currently lodged at Wandsworth prison in south-west London and is wanted for his alleged role in the Rs 13,570 crore loss caused to the bank along with his uncle, Mehul Choksi.

Modi, 48, was arrested in March this year by Scotland Yard in connection with the case.

He has not returned to India despite repeated summons from Indian probe agencies and courts.

India is seeking his extradition to make him face the law of the land for allegedly committing economic offences.

India irked by invite to Pramila Jayapal

Even as Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in India has led to lot of global reactions, member of the central government coalition in Malaysia P Ramasamy has questioned the Malaysian PM Mahathir Mohamad and has said that he "may not have understood the purpose of the new amendment to the citizenship law in India."

Writing in Free Malaysia Today, one of the most popular websites of the south-east Asian country, Ramasamy said Mahathir Bin Mohamad may have "overreacted by saying that India should not deprive Muslims of their citizenship."

P Ramasamy is the Deputy Chief Minister of Penang state situated in northwestern peninsular Malaysia and he is a member of the Democratic Action Party (DAP) which is part of the Pakatan Harapan coalition led by Malaysian PM Mahathir Mohamad.

Explaining the CAA law, Ramasamy said, "new amendment to India’s citizenship law is not about depriving Muslims of their citizenship. Far from it. The new law has nothing to do with Muslims in India."

Adding, "It is about fast-tracking citizenship for non-Muslim minorities like Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs and Parsis, who have been shunned and discriminated in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, countries that have declared themselves as the Islamic nation".

India has slammed Malaysian PM for his comments on the law that was passed by India's parliament in early December.

The ministry of external affairs in a release said, "Prime Minister of Malaysia’s comment is factually inaccurate" and New Delhi "call upon Malaysia to refrain from commenting on internal developments in India, especially without a right understanding of the facts."

Malaysian PM has two times in the past few days reacted on India's CAA law.

On Saturday morning he again commented on the law saying it is unfortunate and "to exclude Muslims from becoming citizens even by due process is unfair. Have voice our disagreement".

Mahathir was among the few global leaders, along with Turkey's President Erdoğan who were critical of New Delhi after it removed the special status for the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.
