Transporters are finding difficult to streamline the supply chain of the essential goods with only 15 per cent of trucks on the road due to the coronavirus lockdown, the national body of transporters All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) said.

AIMTC is an apex body of Transporters - (both Cargo and Passenger) serving the industry for the last 84 years. It represents around 1 crore truckers and 55 lakhs tourist buses and operators.

"We have approximately 12.5 lakh trucks with the national permit. But during the period of lockdown, only 2 lakh to.2.5 lakh trucks with national permits are on road," Kultaran Singh Atwal, President of AIMTC told ANI.

Atwal said that the government should also allow opening up offices of the transporters engaged in transporting essential goods and issue passes for that. Meanwhile, Rajender Kapoor, President of Delhi Goods Transport Organisation said "Our office staff can't move from loading to unloading points for supervision as they don't have passes. According to MHA guidelines, drivers don't need passes, with valid driving licences they can carry essential goods."

Kapoor said trucks to Coimbatore, Nagpur or Kolkata have been stranded due to the lockdown.

Praveen Khandelwal, General Secretary, Confederation of All India Traders suggested that the process of obtaining passes should be eased.

A sizeable chunk of the 29 million doses of hydroxychloroquine bought by the US to combat the coronavirus pandemic is from India, President Donald Trump has said as he acknowledged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was "great" when he sought his help to allow the sale of the anti-malaria drug to treat the growing number of COVID-19 patients in America.

Trump and Prime Minister Modi spoke over the phone last week. During the call, Trump requested Modi to lift the hold on the American order of hydroxychloroquine, of which India is the major producer.

Hydroxychloroquine has been identified by the US Food and Drug Administration as a possible treatment for the COVID-19 and it is being tested on more than 1,500 coronavirus patients in New York.

Anticipating that it will work, given initial positive results, Trump has bought more than 29 million doses of hydroxychloroquine for the potential treatment of COVID-19 patients.

"I bought millions of doses (of hydroxychloroquine). More than 29 million. I spoke to Prime Minister Modi, a lot of it (hydroxychloroquine) comes out of India. I asked him if he would release it? He was Great. He was really good," Trump told Sean Hannity of the Fox News on Monday night.

"You know they put a stop because they wanted it for India,"&nbsp;Trump said responding to a question on the usage of hydroxychloroquine.

India on Tuesday allowed the export of hydroxychloroquine to the US, which has emerged as the global hotspot of COVID-19.

By Tuesday night, nearly four lakh Americans tested positive for the novel coronavirus and the fatalities was more than 12,850. During the interview, Trump described hydroxychloroquine as a powerful malaria drug. The drug is being tested on hundreds of coronavirus patients in New York.

"But there are a lot of good things coming from that,"&nbsp;Trump said.

"Lot of people are looking at it and saying, you know I don't hear bad stories, I hear good stories. And I don't hear anything where it is causing death,"&nbsp;said the US President.

Hydroxychloroquine, an old and inexpensive drug used to treat malaria, is seen as a viable therapeutic solution by President Trump to coronavirus.

Last week Trump said he has sought help from Prime Minister Modi to allow the sale of hydroxychloroquine tablets ordered by the US to treat the growing number of coronavirus patients in his country, hours after India banned the export of the anti-malarial drug.

India has received similar requests from several other countries including its immediate neighbours Sri Lanka and Nepal. India has said that it is reviewing its export ban order.

Notably, India's decision to ban the exports of hydroxychloroquine is driven by its desire to take stock of the domestic requirements and ensure that the country has enough of the drug.

"I would be surprised if he would, you know, because India does very well with the United States," Trump told reporters during a press briefing at the White House on Monday.

Trump and Modi enjoy a personal friendship as reflected in the president joining the prime minister at the "Howdy, Modi!" event in Houston last September.

This February, Trump made a rare India-specific solo trip to Ahmedabad and New Delhi.

India on Monday agreed to lift the ban on export of hydroxychloroquine to the US. Three Gujarat-based companies would export these tablets to the US, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said on Tuesday.

India manufactures 70 per cent of the world's supply of hydroxychloroquine, according to Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA) secretary-general Sudarshan Jain.

The country has a production capacity of 40 tonnes of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) every month, implying 20 crore tablets of 200 mg each. And since the drug is also used to auto-immune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, manufacturers have good production capacities that can also be ramped up.&nbsp;

Interestingly the letter was sent on the day of &nbsp;Hanuman Jayanti.&nbsp;

As many as 400 million people working in the informal economy in India may fall deeper into poverty due to the coronavirus crisis, the UN's labour body has warned.

Coronavirus pandemic has already wreaked "catastrophic consequences" on India and the world alike, and is expected to wipe out 195 million full-time jobs or 6.7 per cent of working hours globally in the second quarter of this year in the country, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in its report titled 'ILO Monitor 2nd edition: COVID-19 and the world of work' said, describing COVID-19 as "the worst global crisis since World War II".

"In India, Nigeria and Brazil, the number of workers in the informal economy affected by the lockdown and other containment measures is substantial," ILO said.

"In India, with a share of almost 90 per cent of people working in the informal economy, about 400 million workers in the informal economy are at risk of falling deeper into poverty during the crisis. Current lockdown measures in India, which are at the high end of the University of Oxford's COVID-19 Government Response Stringency Index, have impacted these workers significantly, forcing many of them to return to rural areas," it said.

"Workers and businesses are facing catastrophe, in both developed and developing economies. We have to move fast, decisively, and together. The right, urgent, measures, could make the difference between survival and collapse," ILO Director-General Guy Ryder said on Tuesday.

The report said the disruption to the world's economies caused by the COVID-19 pandemic is expected to wipe out 6.7 per cent of working hours globally in the second quarter of this year -- the equivalent of 195 million jobs worldwide.

Huge losses are expected across different income groups but especially in upper-middle income countries (7.0 per cent, 100 million full-time workers), far exceeding the effects of the 2008-9 financial crisis, the report warned.

Thee report, however, added the eventual increase in global unemployment during 2020 will depend substantially on future developments and policy measures. There is a high risk that the end-of-year figure will be significantly higher than the initial ILO projection of 25 million, it said.

According to the report, 1.25 billion workers are employed in the sectors identified as being at high risk of "drastic and devastating" increases in layoffs and reductions in wages and working hours. Many are in low-paid, low-skilled jobs, where a sudden loss of income is devastating.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said a poster widely being circulated on WhatsApp and other social media platforms, asking people to honour him by giving him a standing ovation on April 12, "seems like mischief to drag me into controversies".

''It has been brought to my attention that some people are running a campaign that to honour Modi stand for 5 minutes. At first glance, it seems like mischief to drag Modi into controversies,'' Modi wrote in Hindi on his Twitter handle.

If you want to honour the PM, then take the responsibility of a poor family as long as coronavirus crisis exists in the country, he added.&nbsp;<img alt="Modi" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="6fbf4771-5695-402a-acd0-58f22a49ca7e" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/Modi_0.jpg" />

Had it not been for the lockdown, one coronavirus-positive person would have infected 406 others in one month, a senior official from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) said on Tuesday.

Despite the lockdown, however, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 is on a constant rise, forcing the states to press the Centre for the extension of the pan-India lockdown -- originally supposed to be ended on April 14.

According to the health ministry, India has recorded over 149&nbsp;deaths of the reported 5,194&nbsp;cases.&nbsp;

On Tuesday, India registered the highest single-day increase with over 500 positive cases.

No final call has been taken by the Centre or the strategic committee that was tasked with formulating an exit plan after the lockdown, but with the cases nearing the 5,000-mark, India is staring at an extension.

A group of ministers, reports say,&nbsp;recommended an extension of the closure of all educational institutions irrespective of whether the lockdown is extended or not. The ministers also suggested that&nbsp;religious centres and educational institutions, and shopping malls must&nbsp;not be allowed to resume normal functioning for at least for four weeks from April 14.

In addition, the expert committee appointed by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to study the COVID-19 lockdown also recommended the Centre to not fully withdraw the lockdown on April 14.

"The Expert Committee assessed that the time is not yet ripe for full withdrawal of the lockdown on April 14. The withdrawal strategy should be gradual, phased and calibrated to ensure the case-load is always kept below the surge capacity of the healthcare system to deal with it," the report read.

"The Committee, however, is cognizant that prolonged and stringent lockdown will lead to economic hardship, famine and law and order issues, which may, in turn, undermine both the lockdown and the health management objectives," the report further read.

The Expert Committee has also recommended the phasing of restrictions for areas outside COVID-19 infection hotspots. It also says that lockdown can be relaxed district wise in three phases. It is sustainable only if there are a steady recovery and decline in the number of cases.

"Therefore, a phased approach to the withdrawal of the lockdown has been suggested. The unit for operationalising such a phased approach is suggested to be a district which has defined boundaries as well as the executive magistrate, who has the authority to effectively enforce the measures of the phased lockdown," the report added.

Telangana Chief Minister has also suggested for the extension of the lockdown.

Meanwhile, the government has ordered states to take strict legal action against people violating the lockdown or quarantine, which carries a two-year jail term.

India so far has registered more than 4,400 cases of coronavirus, but there are concerns that there may be many asymptomatic people who are yet to be detected.

The apex court was hearing a PIL filed by lawyer and petitioner Shashank Deo Sudhi via video-conferencing.

Sudhi sought a direction to the Centre and other respective authorities to provide free of cost the testing facility for COVID-19 to all citizens in the country.&nbsp;

During the hearing, the court asked the Centre to ensure private labs don`t charge a high amount for the test and suggested that the government can create an effective mechanism for reimbursement from the government for tests.&nbsp;

Mehta said that they will look into the suggestion and will try to devise what can be done best.

Sudhi, on the other hand, submitted that testing of coronavirus is very expensive and therefore the Central government should take all necessary steps to provide free of cost the testing facility for COVID-19 kits and others to all citizens in the country.&nbsp;
