Uttar Pradesh: At least 29 dead after bus skids off Yamuna Expressway and falls into drain

At least 29 people died on Monday morning after a Uttar Pradesh roadways bus skidded off the six-lane Yamuna Expressway and fell into a drain. Around 17 others were injured.

The bus, carrying around 50 people was going from Lucknow to New Delhi.

Agra District Magistrate NG Ravi Kumar said, ''The incident took place around 4:30 am. The driver probably dozed off and the speeding bus broke our barrier and fell in the drain. The search operation is underway.''

''One Sleeper Coach passenger bus travelling from Lucknow to Delhi met with an accident on Yamuna Expressway. It fell into the side fall about 15 feet deep. 20 passengers rescued so far. Efforts are on for the rest,'' the Uttar Pradesh Police tweeted.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed his grief and condolences to the families of the deceased. He also asked the authorities to give all help to the injured as well as the families of those killed in the accident.

The chief minister has also ordered an enquiry by a committee consisting of Transport Commissioner, Divisional Commissioner and Inspector General Of Police of Agra to investigate the incident in 24 hours and give a report on the cause of the incident and also report on long term recommendations to avoid such accidents.

Uttar Pradesh roadways have made an announcement of Rs 5 lakh to families of the deceased.
