Political shake-up in Jharkhand? Ex-CM Champai Soren drops new party hints

Former Jharkhand chief minister Champai Soren on Wednesday (August 21) fuelled speculation that he might float a new political party in the run-up to the state's assembly elections.
Soren, who returned to his hometown of Seraikela Kharsawan on Tuesday night, amid speculation that he may join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as per reports, said: "I had mentioned three options – retirement, organisation, or friend. I will not retire; I will strengthen the party, a new party and if I meet a good friend on the way, then will move ahead with them…".
Humiliating tenure
This comes as, on Sunday (August 18), the 67-year-old tribal leader took to social media to air his grievances. He alleged that he had been "insulted" during his tenure as the chief minister.
He detailed occasions where he felt marginalised, including being asked to resign abruptly and being denied the opportunity to convene a legislative party meeting.

Champai was appointed as the Jharkhand CM after Hemant Soren was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). However, once Hemant was released from jail, Champai had to step down.
The tribal leader alleged that he felt "bitter humiliation" during his tenure as the CM. He revealed that his programmes scheduled for the first week of July were abruptly cancelled by the party without his knowledge. He said he remained silent because he was not greedy for power, but that his self-respect was hurt because of it.
Who is Champai Soren?
Champai has been nicknamed "Jharkhand's Tiger" for his role in the fight for the creation of a separate state in the 1990s. Jharkhand was created from the southern part of Bihar in 2000.
The subsequent elections of 2009, 2014, and 2019 were won by Champai Soren.From September 2010 to January 2013, he held a position as a cabinet minister in the BJP government led by Arjun Munda.
