It's time to move over 'Glass Skin' and make space for 'Glittery Vampire Skin' trend that has literally taken the digital space by storm. Inspired by Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart's 'The Twilight Saga', this beauty trend is all about having a shiny, glittery base instead of a matte one. Before we tell you how to achieve it, let's talk a bit about the origin of this trend.

What inspired the trend?

Considering that everyone is not as much of a Twilight fan as I am, here’s a quick reminder of what happens when a Twilight vampire steps into the sunlight. Unlike other fictional vampires, Edward Cullen, Alice Cullen, Emmett Cullen and other vampires in the Twilight series don’t burn in the sunlight, instead, they sparkle.

The sunlight actually casts a glitter-like glimmer onto their skin and gives that diamond-like feel. That's the reason why the Cullen family decided to make their abodes&nbsp;in Forks, which is a small, rainy city&nbsp;that gets minimal sunlight throughout the year.&nbsp;

After this quick refresher, let's learn from professional makeup artists how to recreate that shimmery base and hop on the 'Vampire Skin' trend. It's super easy to carry, goes well with smokey eyes and dark lips, and adds a glistening glow to your skin.&nbsp;

How to create the 'Vampire Skin' look?

In a video shared by pro-MUA Imon August, we can see that the Vampire Skin base is acheieved by mixing a sheer or medium coverage foundation with liquid glittery highlighter. Once you apply that all over your face, you must then dust some powder glitter in an icy white shade across your cheekbones, forehead, and nose with a brush.

According to another MUA, use a beauty blender to get rid of any harsh lines or strokes and avoid using powder products with this look.

For your lips, opt for a peach or coral shade and create an ombre effect to look like the Cullens.&nbsp;

Also, make sure that you top it up with a dewy makeup fixer or setting spray to add that extra glow to your skin.

On Monday, Shehan Karunatilaka, who hails from Sri Lanka, won Britain's&nbsp;prestigious&nbsp;2022 Booker Prize for his fiction book 'The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida', which is a satirical afterlife noir set during Sri Lanka's civil war. It revolves around a journalist who gets murdered amid the country's sectarian strife.

Apart from the trophy, he also won a £50,000 ($56,000) cash prize. The accolade also provides a career-changing boost in sales and public profile, which helps an author reach new milestones.

Karunatilaka is the second Sri Lankan to win this award. The first one was Michael Ondaatje, who bagged the award in 1992 for 'The English Patient'.

Talking about the special moment, the 47-year-old author said, "My hope for Seven Moons is this... that in the not-so-distant future... that it is read in a Sri Lanka that has understood that these ideas of corruption and race-baiting and cronyism have not worked and will never work."

"I hope it's in print in 10 years but if it is, I hope it's written in (a) Sri Lanka that learns from its stories, and that Seven Moons will be in the fantasy section of the bookshop... next to the dragons, the unicorns (and) will not be mistaken for realism or political satire," he added.

The book was described as "an afterlife noir that dissolves the boundaries not just of different genres, but of life and death, body and spirit, east and west" by Chair of judges, Neil MacGregor.

Here're some more books written by the Sri Lankan author:

Chinaman

'Chinaman: The Legend of Pradeep Mathew', Karunatilaka's debut novel,&nbsp;tells the story of an alcoholic journalist's quest to find a missing Sri Lankan cricketer in the 1980s. Described as part-comedy, part-mystery, part-tragedy and part-drunken-memoir, the novel won the Commonwealth Prize and was selected for the BBC and The Reading Agency's Big Jubilee Read.&nbsp;

Chats with the Dead&nbsp;

Karunatilaka's second novel&nbsp;'Chats with the Dead'&nbsp;is a black comedy about ghosts. It was published in 2020 by Penguin India. At Tokyo's prestigious Bunka Fashion College, students concentrate in silence that is broken only by the sound of scissors and sewing machines as they strive to emulate the global success of alumni like Kenzo.

The loss of greats Kenzo Takada and Issey Miyake heralds the end of a fashion era, decades after Japanese design revolutionised Parisian catwalks in the 1970s and '80s.

And the French capital remains a goal for emerging talent like Bunka graduate Takuya Morikawa, whose streetwear-inspired tailoring made its Paris Fashion Week debut two years ago.

Morikawa, 40, hopes his shows at the industry's top event will lead to "an amazing future, beyond my wildest dreams".

Before launching his label TAAKK in 2013, Morikawa spent eight years at Miyake's studio, where he worked on runway collections and the famous "Pleats Please" line, but also harvested rice and made paper to learn about traditional craft methods.

He told AFP he was saddened by Miyake's death this summer but implored younger designers not to feel disheartened.

"We need to do our best to not let these designers' deaths impact the fashion world. If that happens, it means we're doing our job badly," he said.

One of the big names picking up the baton is Nigo, who shot to fame in the 1990s with his streetwear brand A Bathing Ape.

The designer, who also studied at Bunka and whose real name is Tomoaki Nagao, was named artistic director at Kenzo last year after founder Takada died of Covid-19 in 2020.

Another Japanese label enjoying international success is Sacai, founded in 1999 by Chitose Abe, who was tapped as the first guest couture designer for Jean Paul Gaultier.

-&nbsp;'Goosebumps' -

Kenzo and textile visionary Miyake became hugely influential by pursuing their passion in Paris, as did haute couture trailblazer Hanae Mori, who died in August.

Left holding the torch are Yohji Yamamoto, now 79, and 80-year-old Rei Kawakubo, founder of Comme des Garcons, who shook up the fashion establishment in the early 1980s.

New challenges, including the vast range of styles now available for every taste, have made it harder for&nbsp;emerging designers to grab global attention, according to Bunka president Sachiko Aihara.

"The world was shocked" by avant-garde Japanese design, she said, recalling how her students began to dress in black after Yamamoto launched his first monochromatic clothing line.

"But we no longer live in an era where a designer presents a collection and everyone wears it," she said at the school, whose basement archive is packed with valuable garments that students and teachers can study.

This is because of the explosion in diverse types of clothing, "not a decline in talent", stressed Aihara, adding that it was now also essential to study business to start a competitive brand.

Designer Mariko Nakayama, who worked as a stylist in Tokyo's fashion scene for decades, also remembers "feeling goosebumps" wearing Comme des Garcons for the first time.

She agrees, however, that the industry is different now.

"Looking at Virgil Abloh for Louis Vuitton, for example, I feel that now is an era of edit," with designers making modern tweaks to classic shapes and patterns, she said at her boutique in Tokyo's upscale Omotesando district.

- 'Create new values' -

Working in Paris, London, New York or Milan is still seen as key to succeeding for Japanese designers, said Aya Takeshima, 35, who studied at Central Saint Martins in the British capital.

Takeshima's recent show at Tokyo Fashion Week for her brand Ayame featured women wearing sheer blouses and embossed dresses, while male models donned delicate dresses.&nbsp;

She told AFP she had chosen to study abroad to "learn what I needed to become an independent designer", adding that the experience had helped her understand different perspectives.

"Honestly, I think it would be difficult" to succeed internationally while only working in Japan, she said.

"In Japan, it felt like technique was drilled into you first, while ideas and concepts... were secondary", but it was the other way around in London, Takeshima explained.

Bunka college recognises these benefits and plans to offer a scholarship for studying abroad as part of its 100th-anniversary celebrations next year.

For 21-year-old Natalia Sato, a student at Bunka, Miyake and the old guard of Japanese designers "brought a great deal of Japanese and Eastern values" to the world, including techniques inspired by "delicate" traditional craftsmanship.

"I'm worried that the foundation they built might be destroyed by their passing", but "at the same time, this is a turning point" that could provide new creative opportunities, she said.

"It's a chance for me to think about how we can create new values."

The last two years have been haunted by&nbsp;fatal deaths, exhausting resources of governments, all because of Zoonotic diseases. These are diseases or infections which can easily be transferred to humans via animals or vice versa.&nbsp;Coronavirus,&nbsp;African swine flu, and Monkeypox are some examples of zoonotic diseases.

Quoting the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention, "About 60 per cent of the known infectious diseases in humans and 75 per cent of all emerging infectious diseases are caused by pathogens that originate in animals."

Infections like African swine flu led to the culling of pigs in large numbers due to its ability to transfer and infect other pigs as well. The same goes for cows. They are kept in isolation to prevent lumpy skin infections from spreading further to other animals or humans. Hence it is important to integrate the health system of the environment, humans and animals.&nbsp;

'One Health' is an integrated, unifying approach to balance and optimize the health of people, animals and the environment.

But why 'One Health' approach is important? Of course, it reduces the risk of Zoonotic diseases, ensures food safety, helps in solving anti-microbial resistance, and protects biodiversity. The most important element of this approach is the systematic collection, collaboration, coordination, and commitment of relevant sectors to reduce the impact on health.

Let’s talk about India and its efforts towards one health approach. In India institutes like the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) have collaborated to control disease outbreaks. In 2004, an Integrated Disease Surveillance Project was introduced for the detection and response of any outbreak. The program failed to integrate animals and livestock.

In 2008, a roadmap was created for strategies, research and analyse which will help in minimising disease overflow. The National Mission on Biodiversity and Human Well-being was a framework to integrate ecosystem services, climate change, agriculture, health, bio-economy and capacity-building towards one health.

The government of India has set up a new department under ICMR to combat zoonotic diseases in its Nagpur centre. Furthermore a National Expert Group on one health. This paves the way to promote multi-sectoral, transdisciplinary, collaboration and cooperation to adopt one health approach.

Gen Z has fallen in love with&nbsp;the wolf haircut trend and they are having a lot of fun flaunting shaggy and purposely untamed tresses this fall. Celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Billie Eilish, and Miley Cyrus have also taken inspiration from influencers and have hopped on the bandwagon with their versions of the trend. They look uber-chic yet cool and they pair well with most western outfits.&nbsp;

With shorter and wispier layers around the crown flowing into tapered layers that cascade down the length of the tresses, the wolf cut&nbsp;blends two iconic periods in style, and pop culture, i.e the '70s and '80s. The look is a hybrid of mullet and shag cute&nbsp;and&nbsp;is considered a modern take on the iconic hairstyle rocked by famous stars like Rod Stewart, Patti Smith, Mick, Kiss, and Joan Jett.

The hairdo has made an appearance on the runway, in movies and has been all over social media. Jennifer Lopez was seen flaunting the haircut trend&nbsp;on the poster of her latest film&nbsp;'Shotgun Wedding'.

Meanwhile, Billie Eilish has been a fan of wolf cut since last year. She tried it with both&nbsp;black and blonde hair.&nbsp;Miley Cyrus, on the other hand, flaunted the cut on her tour.&nbsp;

	<li>To achieve a messy look, scrunch a curl cream onto damp hair and allow them to air dry</li>

The life of Queen Elizabeth, Britain's longest-reigning monarch, is celebrated in a new comic book by TidalWave Comics, covering her public and private life, big events, family scandals, and crises.

The queen died on Sept. 8 aged 96 and was laid to rest alongside her beloved husband Prince Philip on Sept. 19 after a day in which Britain and the world paid her a final farewell, in a dazzling show of pomp and ceremony.

The 30-page glossy, part of the publisher's "Tribute" series, starts with the royal beekeeper notifying the palace hive of the queen's death, a centuries-old tradition rooted in superstition about honey production. &nbsp; &nbsp;

"I wanted to start small - the legend of the bees - and end large - the funeral viewed by millions worldwide," co-writer Michael Frizell said in a statement. "That was a fitting way to depict her 70-year reign."

Among the 2,000 congregation at Westminster Abbey, where monarchs have been married, buried and crowned over the last 1,000 years, were some 500 presidents, prime ministers, foreign royal family members and dignitaries.

The book, released on Wednesday, is available digitally and in hard and soft covers.

English artist Damien Hirst is burning hundreds of his artworks after he sold a series of NFTs for them, several media reports said. He asked buyers who bought artwork from his new collection to make a choice between physical form or NFT. If they chose NFT, the corresponding artwork, he had promised, would be destroyed. As per the BBC, Hirst, 57, said burning the artworks felt "better than I expected." He live-streamed the event. The visuals showed him wearing a boiler suit. He and his assistants can be seen taking each artwork by tongs and putting it in a firebox.&nbsp;

The collective value of the artworks is said to be nearly £10 million. The Bristol-born artist had announced his NFT project in July 2021. Called 'The Currency' and made up of 10,000 NFTs, it grossed $25,000,000.

Away from office hullabaloo, work from home (WFH) became the new normal during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Employees across the globe were forced to stay at home to follow safety measures.&nbsp;

The circumstantial decision of WFH was imposed by many companies globally after Covid's first outbreak in late 2019, but it eventually became a comfort zone for many.&nbsp;

People also came up with terms like WFG (working from the garden), and WFC (working from the cafe).&nbsp;

Now, the world is maybe taking a step forward to normalise working from pubs (WFP). Would you be interested in this concept? If yes, then read about Britons, who are rushing to sociable venues. Such places are apparently even facilitating such customers by offering deals.&nbsp;

A report by Daily Mail stated that for some Britons, working from the pub is becoming the new working from home. Some chains have noticed this trend and many are offering deals from just £10 a day to attract remote workers amid the ongoing cost of living crisis in the country, which is expected to worsen this winter.&nbsp;

Due to the ongoing cost of living crisis with UK inflation around 10 per cent, pubs would want to attract customers to keep the business running as they face issues like soaring energy bills, and rising food and drink prices.&nbsp;

But Britons are less inclined to spend. Hence, to lure more customers, many chains have introduced working from the pub deals. This might benefit both sides as people in the UK are also trying to avoid rocketing home energy bills.&nbsp;

Done with work from home? Working from pubs can become new normal for Britons

Did you know diabetes, which is a major cause of bone and joint problems, blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, stroke and lower limb amputation, was the direct cause of 1.5 million deaths in 2019? And, most people don't even consider it a public health problem that the ability to approach epidemic proportions globally.

According to medical experts at Global Hospital, diabetes is a chronic disease characterised by elevated levels of blood glucose, which if untreated over time can cause damage to vital organs like the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves. And, recent studies have shown that this chronic disease can also severely affect bone and muscle health, making them more prone to fractures.

According to research published in 2016, there is a 7-fold increase in hip fractures in patients with type 1 diabetes(T1DM). In type 2 diabetes(T2DM), this risk is increased by 1.3 times. Therefore, Dr Sneha Kothari says that it is extremely important for diabetic patients to take extra care of their bone and muscle health and prevent all the musculoskeletal discomforts associated with long-standing, uncontrolled diabetes.

In an exclusive conversation with WION, Dr Sneha Kothari, Consultant Endocrinologist at Global Hospital, Mumbai, shared important tips to maintain bone and muscle health for diabetic patients. Read on!

<h2>How does diabetes affect bone health?</h2>

Our bones undergo continuous repair, says Dr Kothari. However, diabetics and lack of insulin levels in the body interfere with the formation of new bone leading to weak bone and muscle health. Other factors that attribute to poor musculoskeletal health are:

<ul>
	<li>Reduced release of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1)</li>
	<li>Poor absorption of calcium in the body&nbsp;</li>
	<li>Increased oxidative stress&nbsp;</li>
	<li>Increased glycation where sugar molecules bind to proteins and fats</li>
	<li>Loss of calcium in the urine&nbsp;</li>
</ul>

All these factors weaken the nerves (diabetic neuropathy), affect vision, and disrupt the normal mechanisms that build and maintain bone mass and strength thus predisposing a diabetic person to an increased risk of bone disorders.&nbsp;

<h2>Which bone diseases are more prevalent in diabetics?</h2>

People with long-standing and/or uncontrolled diabetes are more prone to:&nbsp;

<ul>
	<li>Osteoporosis: weakening of the bones due to low bone mineral density or poor bone quality</li>
	<li>Osteoarthritis: Wear and tear of the cartilage</li>
	<li>Frozen shoulder: A decreased range of motion of the shoulder</li>
	<li>Charcot joint: Severe degradation of joints and muscles due to nerve damage&nbsp;</li>
	<li>Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH): Extreme pain and stiffness in the back or neck due to the hardening of tendons and ligaments that affects the spine</li>
	<li>Diabetic hand syndrome: Thickening or hardening of the skin on the hands leading to difficult finger movement</li>
	<li>Dupuytren’s contracture: Thickening of tissues beneath the skin of the palm and fingers leading to hand deformity</li>
</ul>

<h2>What can be done to maintain bone and muscle health with diabetics?</h2>

<ol>
	<li>Include plenty of calcium in your diet: The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for calcium is 1,000 to 1,200 milligrams a day for adults. So, experts suggest that you include good sources of calcium like dairy products, almonds, broccoli, kale, tofu, salmon with bones, sardines etc, in your diet. In addition, one can also take calcium supplements.</li>
	<li>Maintain adequate vitamin D levels: Vitamin D is needed to absorb calcium. For adults, the RDA of vitamin D is 600 to 800 international units a day. Good sources of vitamin D include fish (salmon, trout, whitefish, tuna), mushrooms, eggs and fortified foods, such as milk and cereals. Sunlight also contributes to the body's production of vitamin D. One can also take vitamin D supplements to meet the daily requirements.&nbsp;</li>
	<li>Include physical activity in daily routine: Weight-bearing and strength training exercises like walking, jogging, swimming, squatting, push-ups, pull-ups, and lifting weights help to maintain blood glucose levels, increase stamina, improve bone density, and reduce the risk of diabetes-induced muscle disorders.&nbsp;</li>
	<li>Modify lifestyle: Unhealthy lifestyle practices, like smoking and drinking increase the risk of bone and muscle disorders. Smoking reduces the body’s ability to absorb calcium from food. So, to improve bone health, diabetics must try to quit their unhealthy lifestyle habits.</li>
	<li>Control blood sugar levels: By controlling blood sugar levels, one can prevent complications related to the disease.</li>
	<li>Get body checkups regularly: People with long-standing and uncontrolled diabetes must get their bone density test done at regular intervals. It can help detect osteoporosis much before it affects their range of motion.&nbsp;</li>
</ol>

Control blood sugar levels: By controlling blood sugar levels, one can prevent complications related to the disease. Get body checkups regularly: People with long-standing and uncontrolled diabetes must get their bone density test done at regular intervals. It can help detect osteoporosis much before it affects their range of motion.

In recent decades, the number of dengue and malaria outbreaks has grown dramatically with about half of the world's population currently at risk, says WHO. It's a global burden and the recent alarming increase in case numbers is just another sign to hold our guard up and take measures that will help us keep the dengue and malaria fever away.&nbsp;

In an exclusive conversation with WION, Dr Wasim Khot, consultant for infectious diseases at Global Hospital in Parel, shared a 4-step plan to defeat malaria and dengue in 2022. Scroll to read!

Understand: To defeat any epidemic or outbreak, we must first understand what we are dealing with.&nbsp;

Dengue is a viral infection that is usually transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes or, to a lesser extent, Ae. albopictus. These mosquitoes can bite throughout the day, both indoors as well as outdoors.

Meanwhile, malaria is another life-threatening mosquito-borne blood disease that is transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes. They transmit a parasite known as plasmodium to humans, which causes fever, chills, and headaches.

Find: The second step is to find the breeding sites and prevent mosquitoes from accessing egg-laying habitats. Since mosquitoes prefer to lay eggs in clean stagnant water, you must clean water containers, open storage tanks, drain plant or flower pots and discard objects where water can get accumulated.

Clean: Once you have identified these breeding places, start the cleaning process. After discarding the water, clean the containers and leave them outside in the sun for a few hours. Cover your water tanks, containers and utensils with a lid. Also, ensure that there the drains are not clogged and water is flowing freely.

Safety:&nbsp;Wear clothes with long sleeves while visiting regions that have high malaria and dengue cases. Use mosquito repellants and mosquito nets while sleeping. Keep your windows closed or get window screens installed. Also, cooperate with health authorities in implementing mosquito control measures in your surroundings.

"To cure dengue and malaria fever, one must increase their fluid intake. You can take paracetamol for fever but do not take painkillers like NSAIDs. You should follow the advice given by your physician," said Dr Wasim.

While we all love a good hobby, time isn't generous. Thank god for schools like mine that had one library class a week. I hope yours did too. After school, taking time out for hobbies only becomes more difficult so if someone told you that you should just finish that one course because life is all fun and games afterwards, I am sorry. So while you are killing it at your job, making loads of money alongside transforming the world, here are some quick reads that you can finish in a day or two.

1. The Animal Farm by George Orwell:

Pages: 139

George Orwell's Animal Farm is a timeless classic about a group of farm animals that overthrow their tyrant master. Frustrated with man's domination and cruelty, all animals unite and decide to rule themselves. However, their unity doesn't stand for long. While this setting is evidently imaginary, the events can be understood in the context of human lives too. It broadly deals with how power corrupts even those who were once sincere. This book is the perfect and most entertaining metaphor I ever read. It is a critical take on society itself and can be better interpreted by history and politics enthusiasts. Classics are often known for their profound English narration and diction; this isn't any different.

2. Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 by Cho Nam-Joo

Pages: 126

I would love to believe it is an Indian book if only the names of the characters are changed. Kim Jiyoung, our lead character, faces bias from her birth till the present date, where she is a mom to a baby girl. Her coming-of-age is a mirror of how women are vexed to a point that they don't know themselves anymore. The woman on the cover is faceless because it could be anyone and every one of us. The author voiced her thoughts on stereotypes ranging from male-child preference to workplace harassment to the unfair burden of motherhood. It has to be one of the best feminist critiques of our time. I can only be elated that the book has been translated into English so the world can (and should) read it. What makes it so powerful is that the author included practical and real-world issues. At least one of them will seem relatable to the readers and that is unfortunate.

3. Mahashweta by Sudha Murty

Pages: 160

Mahashweta and many other works of Sudha Murthy are short and easy to read. Mahashweta deals with our detrimental obsession with women's physical looks. Anupama, the lead character, has a penchant for drama and Sanskrit literature. She is married soon after college and abandoned soon after she is diagnosed with leukoderma. Needless to say, her parents aren't keen on supporting her too. The rest of the book is about how Anupama builds herself into an independent woman who doesn't bother about society. The book is so beautiful, almost poetic to read and flawless in its meaning. One doesn't need a dictionary while reading Sudha Murthy. Her works are also an example of how one can deliver awe-inspiring stories using basic language. Gently Falls the Bakula is yet another book of hers that could make it to this list.

4. The Secret by Rhonda Byrne

Pages: 216

The Secret by Rhonda Byrne, also a documentary with the namesake, is an inspiring book I would categorise into the self-help genre. The book essentially deals with the Law of Attraction, a positive belief system that several famous people have spoken about. Rhonda explains it in a very simple way, using stories and illustrations; also considering some contrary views people may have. Many other teachers like Rhonda working on self-development have contributed their input too. Rhonda's language is so simple yet so effective and convincing. She doesn't ask us to perform any uphill tasks in the name of inspiration. In fact, a lot of ideas presented in this book are the ones we are taught since our childhood namely gratitude, optimism, self-confidence, etc. The author puts together all these learnings in a meaningful form.

5. Name Place Animal Thing by Daribha Lyndem

Pages: 160

Shortlisted for the JCB Literature Prize 2021, it is the debutant author's coming-of-age in Meghalaya. For people who don't know much about the state, the book is a treasure trove of knowledge. The author touches upon her childhood, family and lifestyle, slowly moving to her education and becoming aware of the world. It is crucial for us to know the political conflicts that happen in the border states of India and how Indians suffer because of the same. The characters are presented in an empathetic manner - be it D's neighbours or her teacher or her best friend. Also, only a person belonging to the place can do justice in describing the social and political situation. D's story is all kinds of beautiful, to read and reflect on. For a person like me with barely any idea about Meghalaya, this was an eye-opener. Without giving spoilers, I'll just say, this book talks about human relationships and grief as well.

6. Wild Embers by Nikita Gill

Pages: 160

I first discovered Nikita Gill's poetry on social media and followed her wherever I could. She has authored several poetry collections and she often talks about them on the internet. Her poems are short and have strong meanings, unlike the usual cheesy stuff you find on social media. Most of her poems are about feminism while the rest are empowering and inspiring. If you read her famous poem, which is an alternate imagination of fairy tales where the heroine isn't a damsel in distress, you'll like all of her other poems as well. It was quite an easy and interesting read for me.

7. Harper Lin's short stories

You can always reach out for a Harper Lin book if you are looking for underrated, hidden gems in the crime fiction genre. I often read her books and wonder why she isn't as reputed as she should be. With basic language, vivid descriptions and loads of analogies, her murder mysteries are just perfect. They have everything - drama, investigation, suspense and a writing style that does justice to all of it. Her stories are set in small towns and all of those I read had female leads. She has authored quite a great number of crime novels, all around 200 pages. I would call them short stories but that, again, is subjective.

8. Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata

Pages: 176

Sayaka Murata's book, translated into English by Ginny Tapley Takemori, is a slice-of-life of Keiko. Keiko Furukura worked part-time at a convenience store and often found herself a misfit in society. She had been a loner since her childhood; unmarried, childfree and irked with people around her trying to fix her. What happens when she tries to fulfil the social aspirations of a young woman forms the rest of the story. With simple language and beautiful translation, it is the story of a woman who loves herself and her job. It is also a reflection of how we look at people who don't fit our standards of success. Though I initially had a tough time understanding Keiko, I found myself cheering for her and her choices by the end of it. It is a pleasant and enjoyable read that will leave you smiling for quite some time.

With just a few hours left for the announcement of this year's winner of the Nobel Prize for literature, bookies are busy placing their money on a list of probable names that might win this year. Among the list of authors that may win, it seems writer Salman Rushdie is emerging as one of the strong contenders for the prize.&nbsp;

The India-born writer and free speech advocate has spent years in hiding after Iran's clerical rulers issued a fatwa over his 1988 controversial novel 'The Satanic Verses'.&nbsp;
More recently, Rushdie, now 75, was stabbed and seriously injured in August at a festival in New York. He is said to be recovering now.&nbsp;

Apart from Rushdie, other possible winners include some prominent names from the literary world including Kenyan writer Ngugi Wa Thiong'o, Japan's Haruki Murakami, Norway's Jon Fosse, Antigua-born Jamaica Kincaid and France's Annie Ernaux.

Those who follow the awards closely would agree though that it is notorious for its unpredictability.&nbsp;

Last year's prize went to the Tanzanian-born, UK-based writer Abdulrazak Gurnah, whose novels explore the impact of migration on individuals and societies.
Gurnah was only the sixth Nobel literature laureate born in Africa, and the prize has long faced criticism that it is too focused on European and North American writers. It is also male-dominated, with just 16 women among its 118 laureates.

The prizes to Gurnah in 2021 and US poet Louise Glck in 2020 helped the literature prize move on from years of controversy and scandal.

In 2018, the award was postponed after sex abuse allegations rocked the Swedish Academy, which names the Nobel literature committee, and sparked an exodus of members. The academy revamped itself but faced more criticism for giving the 2019 literature award to Austria's Peter Handke, who has been called an apologist for Serbian war crimes.

A week of Nobel Prize announcements kicked off Monday with Swedish scientist Svante Paabo receiving the award in medicine for unlocking secrets of Neanderthal DNA that provided key insights into our immune system.

The 2022 Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday and the economics award on Monday.

The prizes carry a cash award of 10 million Swedish kronor (nearly $900,000) and will be handed out on Dec. 10. The money comes from a bequest left by the prize's creator, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, in 1895.

Beyond the Runway: The history of fashion shows since its inception

According to a report by the Guardian, British sculptor Henry Moore’s work once labelled “a monstrosity” that deserved to be buried and not displayed, is now set to break auction records as the most expensive sculpture ever made by a British sculptor. &nbsp;Moore’s work, an edition of the Reclining Figure: Festival will be sold at its flagship modern art sale in New York later this year in November.&nbsp;

Sotheby’s, the auction house, indicated that they will be selling Moore’s bronze of a reclining semi-abstract figure which was first exhibited at the Festival of Britain in 1951 as a centrepiece. At the time, it received several reactions ranging from startled to unsettling and amused to adoration.&nbsp;

However, Moore reportedly singled out the piece as one of his most important sculptures, and the first in which he succeeded in making “form and space sculpturally inseparable”. According to the Guardian, Sotheby’s is selling one of the seven sculptures that was kept by the Moore family. It has an estimated $30-$40 million which is the highest ever bid on one of Moore’s works or any British sculptor.&nbsp;

There were several interpretations of this sculpture, including some seeing it as a “thrilling representation” of the British defiance and resilience after World War II. Others were supposedly shocked by it, saying that Moore is occupied by images of Nazi concentration camps or other horrors and aftermath of the war. Some others hated it and when Leeds city council agreed to accept the work by the artist on a long-term loan, it raised many eyebrows and stirred up a storm among the people, said the media report.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Moore had declined to weigh in on this row saying that he believes artists themselves entering into these controversies is wrong and that he would never get any work done. He added, “These things sort themselves out in the long run.” The report also indicated that the original plaster sculpture of Reclining Figure is in the Tate collection and others remain in museum collections, one of which includes the Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris.

“It is a very innovative work which was completely in tune with the mood of postwar London,” said chair of Sotheby's Europe, Oliver Barker to the Guardian. He added, “All great art often divides crowds. If you think about Guernica, it was very contentious when it first came out. All great art provokes. Since then it has just become more and more celebrated.” He also went on to say that there is something “very radical” about the sculpture.&nbsp;
