Yesterday when I posted a message appealing for unity & peace in today's protest I had never imagined that the biggest democracy in the world would be under an undeclared EMERGENCY. I was happy there were so many leaders to lead the movement, but I now learn that they have all been arrested. I hope those arrested will be released soon. I will be compelled to consider an Anshan Fast or Padyatra March if they are not released by tomorrow. #JantarMantar #protest #CJP #CEC #sonamwangchuk
— Sonam Wangchuk (@Wangchuk66) October 10, 2026

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior officials of “cowardice” and vowed to continue the fight against the government, as police detained CJP leaders and hundreds of protesters ahead of the group's planned demonstration in Delhi.“I’ve been fighting Narendra Modi and the RSS for over a decade now. I understand them like you would understand your opponent — inside out, like the back of my hand,” Gandhi said.“The core characteristic of these people is cowardice,” he added, naming Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval among the people he accused of attacking the Constitution.Gandhi's remarks came amid heightened security in the national capital on October 10, as the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and its supporters sought to protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls.“Mr Modi, do whatever you want. Call out all the police: 10,000, 20,000, 50,000, whatever you want. Arrest all the leaders. Arrest all the young people. Arrest us all,” Gandhi said, vowing that the opposition would not back down.“We are surrounding you, and we are not going to back down. Uniform-mounted body cameras, multi-layered barricades, Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel and the all-women Pink Force are among the security apparatus put in place to avoid any repeat of the clashes during the July 20 protests.

The national capital is placed on high alert amid protests called by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) for the ouster of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. More than 35,000 police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed across the Delhi. Uniform-mounted body cameras, multi-layered barricades, Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel and the all-women Pink Force are among the measures being used as authorities seek to prevent a repeat of the clashes during the July 20 protests. The security measures have extended to public transport. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has closed entry and exit gates at select stations in central Delhi, the main protest site. Fifty seven metro stations were requested to be shut by Delhi police from 9 pm on Friday, October 9, in wake of the protest. The restrictions are likely to continue through October 10 and extend beyond if required. Rail services, considered lifeline of the country have also been affected. Mail and Express trains scheduled to arrive at New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin railway stations between 4 am and 2 pm on Saturday, October 10 have been cancelled by Indian Railways. Also, trains scheduled to reach either station during that period, after departing their originating stations after 2 pm on Friday, were cancelled at source. Officials have not yet confirm whether the cancellations were directly linked to the planned protest. Stay with us for the latest news, breaking updates and developments as they unfold.

Addressing alumni of the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme in Cote d’Ivoire, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s articulation of the Kampala principles eight years ago, noting that they established the foundational framework governing India’s partnership with the continent. “Where Africa is concerned, development partnership has always been central to our engagement, and we have taken a view that what we do in India should respond to the demands and priorities of our African partners. In fact, this was the central message some years ago when Prime Minister Modi, eight years ago, articulated what were called the Kampala principles of our engagement with Africa,” the EAM said. “And in that priority, in that demand, ITEC is very important because it is a vehicle to share our developmental experiences, our security experiences, our governance experiences, best practices, to also discuss technology and expertise together and equally, I must tell this to all of you; to also learn from the incoming people from the partner countries because every institution that you have gone to has also benefited from your presence up there,” he noted.
