The voice on the phone seemed frighteningly real – an American mother heard her daughter sobbing before a man took over and demanded a ransom. But the girl was an AI clone and the abduction was fake.

The biggest peril of Artificial Intelligence, experts say, is its ability to demolish the boundaries between reality and fiction, handing cybercriminals a cheap and effective technology to propagate disinformation.

In a new breed of scams that has rattled US authorities, fraudsters are using strikingly convincing AI voice cloning tools – widely available online – to steal from people by impersonating family members.

"Help me, mom, please help me," Jennifer DeStefano, an Arizona-based mother, heard a voice saying on the other end of the line.

DeStefano was "100 per cent" convinced it was her 15-year-old daughter in deep distress while away on a skiing trip.

"It was never a question of who is this? It was completely her voice... it was the way she would have cried," DeStefano told a local television station in April.

"I never doubted for one second it was her."

The scammer who took over the call, which came from a number unfamiliar to DeStefano, demanded up to $1 million.&nbsp;

The AI-powered ruse was over within minutes when DeStefano established contact with her daughter. But the terrifying case, now under police investigation, underscored the potential for cybercriminals to misuse AI clones.

<h2>Grandparent scam</h2>

"AI voice cloning, now almost indistinguishable from human speech, allows threat actors like scammers to extract information and funds from victims more effectively," Wasim Khaled, chief executive of Blackbird.AI, told AFP.

A simple internet search yields a wide array of apps, many available for free, to create AI voices with a small sample -- sometimes only a few seconds -- of a person's real voice that can be easily stolen from content posted online.

"With a small audio sample, an AI voice clone can be used to leave voicemails and voice texts. It can even be used as a live voice changer on phone calls," Khaled said.

"Scammers can employ different accents, genders, or even mimic the speech patterns of loved ones. [The technology] allows for the creation of convincing deep fakes."

In a global survey of 7,000 people from nine countries, including the United States, one in four people said they had experienced an AI voice cloning scam or knew someone who had.

Seventy per cent of the respondents said they were not confident they could "tell the difference between a cloned voice and the real thing," said the survey, published last month by the US-based McAfee Labs.

American officials have warned of a rise in what is popularly known as the "grandparent scam" -– where an imposter poses as a grandchild in urgent need of money in a distressful situation.

"You get a call. There's a panicked voice on the line. It's your grandson. He says he's in deep trouble —- he wrecked the car and landed in jail. But you can help by sending money," the US Federal Trade Commission said in a warning in March.

"It sounds just like him. How could it be a scam? Voice cloning, that's how."

In the comments beneath the FTC's warning were multiple testimonies of elderly people who had been duped that way.

<h2>'Malicious'</h2>

That also mirrors the experience of Eddie, a 19-year-old in Chicago whose grandfather received a call from someone who sounded just like him, claiming he needed money after a car accident.

The ruse, reported by McAfee Labs, was so convincing that his grandfather urgently started scrounging together money and even considered re-mortgaging his house, before the lie was discovered.

"Because it is now easy to generate highly realistic voice clones... nearly anyone with any online presence is vulnerable to an attack," Hany Farid, a professor at the UC Berkeley School of Information, told AFP.

"These scams are gaining traction and spreading."

Earlier this year, AI startup ElevenLabs admitted that its voice cloning tool could be misused for "malicious purposes" after users posted a deepfake audio purporting to be actor Emma Watson reading Adolf Hitler's biography "Mein Kampf."

"We're fast approaching the point where you can't trust the things that you see on the internet," Gal Tal-Hochberg, group chief technology officer at the venture capital firm Team8, told AFP.

"We are going to need new technology to know if the person you think you're talking to is actually the person you're talking to," he said.

Kat Wankins, a development officer at the UN Convention on the Rights of persons with Disabilities at Disability Wales, suffered from severe back pain because of not being able to sleep in the bed she had booked at a Travelodge hotel in Hounslow, UK. Watkins suffers from brittle bone disease and sleep apnoea.&nbsp;

Watkins planned her trip in advance from South Wales to London to attend the performance of singer-songwriter and guitarist James Bay at the Royal Albert Hall on April 26. She travelled to the hotel in her convertible van where she had booked a twin room for herself and her personal assistant.&nbsp;

Watkins, who had been there before and had a good experience, was upon arrival informed that the accessible rooms were ‘out of order’ and the room she had advance-booked was no longer available. When questioned about the reason behind the rooms being unavailable, a staff member told her that the rooms had not been cleaned.&nbsp;

<h2>Another mix-up?</h2>

Watkins was then offered two alternatives: a family room where her wheelchair would not fit in the bathroom, or an alternative Travelodge hotel at Twickenham with an accessible room. Watkins reluctantly opted for the first and went ahead with her plan to attend the concert.

In an interview with The Guardian, Watkins said she was “struggling to breathe. I use a ventilator at night and my breathing was becoming more and more shallow.”&nbsp;

 
“The concert I attended was good but I can’t look back on it with fond memories because the experience I had was so traumatic. I’ve been in agony with my back since that night. I’ve told Travelodge I won’t be using their hotels again.”

<h2>Not the first time&nbsp;</h2>

Alex Osborne, a disability equality officer at Disability Wales, said that “Kat’s experience was particularly bad; however, we have many examples from our members, and my colleagues, of very poor service in hotels”. He further added that they hear frequently of disabled people encountering problems with rooms, even though accessible rooms have been pre-booked.

A Travelodge spokesperson commented on the matter and said: “We would like to sincerely apologise to Ms Kat Watkins and her PA for their recent experience with us.

"On this rare occasion, we failed to meet our normal high standard of service. We hope that we can welcome back Ms Watkins and reinstate her faith in our brand.”

This announcement for Tesla car owners came during Zoomtopia conference 2022, Zoom’s annual event to unveil new innovations to power modern work experiences including new features to enable remote calls.

A pre-recorded video demonstrates a Tesla driver engaging in a Zoom video call while conveniently putting the vehicle's battery on charging. However, the video leaves the viewers with some lingering questions.&nbsp;For instance, can this feature also be enabled in driving mode or only be used in parking mode? It is also not known as to when this tech will be launched.&nbsp;

Tesla chief Elon Musk, in May 2020, said in a tweet that adding Zoom calls to Tesla vehicles was “definitely a future feature.” If all goes as per the plan, this will now soon be manifested in reality.&nbsp;

A Zoom spokesperson in a conversation with Mashable website said&nbsp; integrating the Zoom call feature in Tesla’s infotainment system would “not be the safest use case” as many people might attempt to use it while driving. However, Musk is also too distracted by his latest Twitter acquisition.

According to US media reports, the bond between Musk-owned firms and Zoom is not too great either, as SpaceX in April 2020 forbid&nbsp;its employees from using Zoom over “significant privacy and security concerns.”

Tesla is already facing a stiff competition by rival car makers such as automakers such as Volkswagen, Ford and General Motors as they try to catch up to Elon Musk’s vision of a high-end car.&nbsp;

Global economy is slowing down and amid this some analysts believe that Tesla’s premium pricing could pose a tough challenge for the car maker.&nbsp;

Zoom video calls on Tesla cars soon to be a reality?

With Russia-Ukraine conflict looming large over the G20 Bali Summit later this month, Indonesia's ambassador to India Ina Krisnamurthi has emphasised the need for 'dialogue' . The summit will take place at the Nusa Dua Convention Center in Bali on November 15 and 16.

Speaking to WION's Principal Diplomatic Correspondent Sidhant Sibal, Ambassador Krisnamurthi said,"One of the principles Indonesia's presidency has is that dialogue in whatever form is more important than no dialogue whatsoever".&nbsp;

Indonesia has extended invite to both the Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky to attend the mega summit.&nbsp;

This year's summit is important for India as the presidency of the grouping will be handed over to New Delhi. India, as the president of the grouping for a period of one year, will host the summit in September next year. Asked about the hopes regarding India's presidency, Ambassador said, "I believe India will champion the G20 presidency in the future."

Together, the G20 members represent more than 80 per cent of world's GDP, 75 per cent of international trade and 60 per cent of the world population. It emerged primarily as an economic grouping after the 2008 financial crisis and has taken on a political role as well amid a dysfunctional United Nations Security Council.&nbsp;

WION: What preparations are underway to host this big-ticket summit?

Ina Krisnamurthi: Logistically, efforts are on to ensure that all guests are welcomed properly, and they feel at home during the stay in Bali. Security wise, Bali is one of the most secure places. It is an island, a destination very close to the hearts of the Indian people, culturally, historically. My leaders, president, minister of finance, foreign affairs, coordinating minister for economy, maritime all are trying their best in coordinating efforts to make G20 a success.

WION: What will be the key focus area under the Indonesian Presidency for the grouping?

Ina Krisnamurthi: Throughout the year, since December 2021, when we received handover from Italy, we had three priorities -- health, governance and digital economy and energy. We push forward for any effort, any policy implemented to and for G20 members, and we keep that promise. Although it is not an easy period for G20 because of the global dynamics, we push forward for that. That is with two principles in mind, which is that we want a stronger multilateral forum, and want to have a very inclusive way of decision which is why we included pacific island countries in our deliberation. Priorities are done throughout the year, and we will not change that for the summit.&nbsp;

WION: How significant is it for your country? Because so far countries who have hosted the summit are developed countries and with Indonesia it is the start of developing countries hosting the summit.

Ina Krisnamurthi: Until 2025, G20 will be headed by emerging economies, so for sure the presidency of G20 is very important because we make an effort for the interest of the emerging economies to be heard, listened to in the G20 format. This presidency is also important because the pandemic resulted in a very severe economic situation for everyone and the worst victims have been emerging economies, less developed countries. For sure, G20 is very important for Indonesia because Indonesia is experiencing turbulence in its economy while we experience the pandemic. We have priorities, like health governance, so that we are more prepared for future pandemic.&nbsp;

Second is digital economy...During the pandemic, we have survived and thrived due to digital economy.

Third issue is more and more important. It is food, energy, water security with climate change. It is becoming key element for progress and development for our community and society.

WION: What challenge do you see for the G20 summit, in front of you, even as the Russia-Ukraine conflict has been having its impact?

Ina Krisnamurthi: One of the principles Indonesia's presidency has is that dialogue in whatever form is more important than no dialogue whatsoever. People coming in one room to discuss matters, common concerns are more important than thinking about 2-3 parties' interests.&nbsp;

Throughout the presidency for Indonesia, bridging all interests is making everyone come in the same room, to develop dialogue, to discuss the common interest. That is why we have priorities we keep putting forth for whatever reason the global dynamics is. The challenge to bridge the tension, differences, yes, it is very challenging. But at the same time, if we do not sit together in one same room, the challenge or the problem or the matter will not go away. Pandemic also teaches us that no one is securely safe from the pandemic. Everyone experiences the pandemic. Everyone can't live by themselves; everyone needs support to survive the pandemic. Bridging the pandemic is not about making sure everyone has one interest. At least we tried to come up with an avenue for everyone to sit together, to do the dialogue.&nbsp;

WION: Do you expect a family photo, the western leaders and the Russian President to be together?

Ina Krisnamurthi: I think, all are in the eyes of the beholder because the photo ops are not actually substantive in nature, that is my personal opinion. Because the family photo is only a family photo opportunity and doesn't show anything. More than 20 people coming on one stage and taking pictures, does not show anything. The reason for them to come to Bali and sit together, that is more substantial for us rather than family photos. It is not important for family photos to happen or to not happen. The most important thing is that the G20 becomes an avenue for everyone to just state views, state opinions on what to do for the world for a better international community.&nbsp;

WION: Have President Putin, President Zelensky confirmed that they will come to Bali?

Ina Krisnamurthi: Well, the last information, you can find in open media, that my president did not even say who is coming and when they are coming. But for sure, we are trying our best. Even my President is taking calls from leaders. During G7 meetings, he made an effort for everyone to understand Indonesia's position and for Indonesia to understand everyone's position on certain issues, so avenue of dialogue is there. We have seen efforts by my minister, foreign minister and also finance minister to just go and have meetings. You may know, the G20 is the only prime economic framework for leaders to sit down and think about the future of the world.

WION: Are you hopeful of a breakthrough in Bali, in terms of the leaders coming together, do you see President Putin, Zelensky meeting?

Ina Krisnamurthi: For the bilateral meetings, I believe, many bilaterals. Even to sit down in the same room and speak, maybe not to each other, but speaking on behalf of the G20 is a breakthrough.

WION: How do you see the Indian presidency of the grouping that will be handed over from you?

Ina Krisnamurthi: I think the most interesting part for the Indian presidency is that the troika is the historical troika because in the first time of the history of G20, the troika would consist of three emerging economies...For India it is very historical. I have seen how the internet goes crazy with minister Jaishankar going around the world and explaining about India's policy. I think his way of leadership for sure will be a good way for India to lead the G20 into a better position in the future. Unfortunately, India, Indonesia hope that the challenge we experience will be completed before India's presidency but unfortunately-not. The problem of food, energy, and water security is still there. India is among the best in making sure the emerging economies experience the same positive impact. I believe India will champion the G20 presidency in the future.&nbsp;

WION: Why was Bali chosen for the G20 summit?

Ina Krisnamurthi: During Covid, Bali for us was the worst victim of pandemic. More than 90% of its economy depends so much on tourism. We need to help our brothers and sisters in Bali to overcome this challenge. Secondly, Indonesia has hosted events at the summit level, including WTO ministerial, APEC. We believe that Bali has a certain vibrancy. Everyone coming to the island has certain comfortability and at the end the meeting is successful, and the outcome is also substantive. This is why Bali is the host of the G20 summit.&nbsp;

Indonesia envoy emphasises dialogue as Russia-Ukraine conflict looms over G20 Bali summit

Days after Russia pulled out of a UN-led Black Sea Grain Initiative that was aimed to unlock the exports of Ukrainian grain and fertilisers, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky sought stronger defence of Ukraine’s grains export corridor. Zelensky, in a late-night video address Tuesday, said that ships with cargoes of grain were still moving out of Ukrainian ports due to support from Turkey and the United Nations.&nbsp;

“But a reliable and long-term defence is needed for the grain corridor,” Zelensky said.&nbsp;

The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has led to significant food shortages and cost of living crises in the countries that import Ukrainian grain in Europe and Africa. However, a deal under the banner of ‘Black Sea Grain Initiative’ was brokered by Turkey and United Nations on July 22, that led to the formulation of safe passage for cargoes carrying grain and fertilisers from Ukraine.&nbsp;

Citing an attack on its Black Sea fleet, Russia pulled out of the Black Sea Grain Initiative on Saturday, October 29.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Amir Abdullah, the United Nations coordinator for grain and fertiliser exports said Tuesday that no movement of vessels is planned till November 2. “Under the Black Sea Grain Initiative’, we expect loaded ships to sail on Thursday,” he added.&nbsp;

Despite Russian pullback from ‘Black Sea Grain Initiative’, Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar hoped that the pact for grains and fertillisers export from Ukraine would continue. “We expect a response from them today (Russia) and tomorrow,”Akar said Tuesday.&nbsp;

Since the deal was signed in July, over 9 million tonnes of grains and other food products have been exported from Ukraine, UN aid chief Martin Griffith had said last week. The deal had been deemed successful in terms of bringing food prices in control in parts of Europe and Africa, averting fears of severe food shortages due to war.&nbsp;
