<p>Hundreds of prisoners locked up in Bahrain have initiated a hunger strike citing alleged human rights violations, a UK-based rights group has revealed.</p>

<p>Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy (BIRD) said Friday (August 18), “At least 500 prisoners&nbsp;were taking part in the hunger strike against what they call inhumane prison conditions.”</p>

<p>As per the group, prison inmates are confined to their cells 23 hours a day and are even restricted from practising their religion.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At the centre of the controversy is the Jau prison, where those dissidents are held who were detained following the pro-democracy protests in 2011.</p>

<p>The hunger strike began on August 9 and has escalated as more inmates join the movement.</p>

<h2><strong>What are the demands of&nbsp;prisoners?</strong></h2>

<p>A statement released by the outlawed Bahraini opposition party Al-Wefaq quoted the prisoners as saying that they needed increased time outside the cells.</p>

<p>Other demands include permission to hold prayers in congregation at the prison mosque, changes to constraints on family visits and improvements in education facilities.</p>

<p>“These are not frivolous demands, but necessary ones required for basic human life,” the prisoners said.</p>

<h2><strong>US expresses concerns</strong></h2>

<p>The woman, named Gina Helsel, resides in the Daytona Beach area. Last Thursday (August 10), when she let her dog out onto the porch to scare off the cats, little did she know she herself was in for a big shock.</p>

<p>“My brother called me… cracking up and was like, ‘Gina, only you would scream like that',” she said while explaining how her family members reacted to the incident.</p>

<p>“I am glad the bear’s OK. I don’t want anything to happen to the bear. The bear was doing what – it lives here,” Gina added.</p>

<p>One of Russia's oldest and most reputed human rights organisations is closing after a court order, reported Interfax on Friday (August 18).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The court ruled for the shutdown of the Sakharov Center, established to commemorate Soviet dissident and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Andrei Sakharov. The group had been a significant hub for exhibitions and discussions related to human rights since its inception in 1996.</p>

<p>Interfax reported that the Justice Ministry had taken legal action to close the group, citing alleged "systematic gross and irremediable violations of the law.”</p>

<p>These allegations were levelled after the group staged an exhibition about Sakharov in those parts of the country where it did not have any branch.</p>

<p>Additionally, the organisation faced accusations of sharing videos without the required "foreign agent" label, as mandated under Russian laws.</p>

<h2><strong>Response from the Sakharov Center</strong></h2>

<p>The Moscow City Court granted approval to the Justice Ministry's request of closing down the group on Friday. The Sakharov Center, however, denied the alleged violations, asserting that it would persist in its efforts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sergei Lukashevsky, the centre's director, expressed his dismay over the decision, highlighting the contradiction between present events and the ideals Sakharov had fought for.</p>

<p>Japan on Friday (August 18) scrambled its fighter jets after two Russian&nbsp;IL-38 information-gathering aircraft were spotted flying near its maritime border in the Sea of Japan, Reuters reported.</p>

<p>Russia and China are holding a joint naval exercise in the East China Sea. “Russian and Chinese navy ships have been jointly patrolling the Pacific Ocean and holding naval exercises in the East China Sea,” the Russian Defence Ministry said.</p>

<p>"In the East China Sea, an exercise was conducted to replenish ships with water and fuel supplies from support vessels," the ministry said.</p>

<p>"A detachment of ships of the Russian Navy and the PLA Navy is currently operating in the waters of the East China Sea and has covered more than 6,400 nautical miles since the beginning of the patrol," it added.</p>

<h2><strong>Anti-submarine exercises conducted</strong></h2>

<p>The Russian defence ministry also said that the two nations conducted anti-submarine exercises. The two navies “repelled a simulated enemy air raid, conducted rescue training at sea and practised helicopter takeoffs and landings on the decks of warships,” read the statement.</p>

<p>Earlier, Japan spotted Russian and Chinese naval ships faring in the proximity of the southern Japanese islands of Okinawa and Miyako on Thursday (August 17).</p>

<h2><strong>Recent activities near Japanese islands</strong></h2>

<p>A total of six Chinese ships, including missile destroyers, and five Russian vessels, some of which were destroyers, traversed between Japan's Okinawa Island and Miyako Island before proceeding towards the East China Sea on Thursday, according to the Japanese defence ministry.</p>
