A fairy penguin named ‘Chaka’ became the world’s first penguin to get an MRI scan. The penguin lives at Sea Life, Weymouth in the UK underwent the scan as it was observed to have a bit of ‘wobbling’ while waddling.
This is considered a milestone in the field of veterinary. The scan was able to show that the penguin has some balance issues but nothing was critical.

"Chaka's results have come back to show no detrimental issue to his health, and his scan now brings a range of new knowledge,” says Pipa Tucker, from Cave Veterinary Specialists.

According to the Weymouth Sea Life Adventure Park, Chaka leads a healthy, social life interacting with other fellow penguins. The team also shared details about the extra efforts taken to ensure the procedure was as comfortable as possible for Chaka.

‘Penguin pioneer’

In a Facebook post shared by the park, Kico Iraola, a curator at SEA LIFE Weymouth said: “Chaka has become a penguin pioneer. Although his own waddle may still be a little wobbly, he has made great strides for the world of veterinary science and the penguin world.”

Tucker also said that unlike cats and dogs, which are regularly treated by veterinary specialists, penguins hold their breath for comparatively lesser time. This made the team closely monitor Chaka during the scan.

Why this MRI scan is a milestone

Fairy Penguins are the smallest of the 17 penguin species. The information that is gathered during the scan could go on to support the conservation of the world’s wild population of this species. US: Pennsylvania declares Hindu festival of Diwali as official holiday

It is good news for all those who are planning to move to Australia for work, as the country is set to make significant changes in its immigration system. The proposed major overhauling of the system is done with the aim to speed up the entry of highly skilled workers into the country. It will also focus on streamlining the process of permanent residency. The federal Labor government said Thursday that the system used to select skilled migrants will be modified.

At present, the points test is used to choose people with the correct skill sets but this will be changed so that candidates who are better for the Australian economy are included.

"Our migration system ... is broken. It is failing our businesses, it is failing migrants themselves. And most importantly, it is failing Australians. That cannot continue," home affairs minister Clare O'Neil said.

The system will be changed on the lines of that of Canada and Germany which allows easy immigration of foreign nationals. It will be modified to attract more skilled migrants as Australia faces the inexorable challenge of the ageing population.

Some proposed changes to the new immigration system:

1. The government also said that the visa process for highly-skilled professionals will be made quicker and easier.

2. Steps would be taken to retain international students.

3. Temporary migrant workers will be allowed to move from their current job and be given up to six months to find work with another employer within the same sector or type of work.

4. Temporary skilled visa holders, who had been denied the opportunity to apply for permanent residency, will be able to do that by the end of this year.

In September, Australia raised its intake of permanent migrants to 195,000 up by 350,000, as businesses faced staff shortages. From July 1, the government even said that it would raise the migrant wage threshold of temporary skilled workers to A$ 70,000 from A$ 53,900. This was the first big change in wages since 2013.

The reviewers said they were “greatly concerned by the way the current system heightens the risk of exploitation faced by temporary migrant workers”. In particular, employer sponsorship has “created the opportunity for exploitation … because it stifles the ability and willingness of an employee to report non-compliance”.

Around 90 per cent of full-paid jobs in Australia are now paid more than the current threshold, leading to the exploitation of migrant workers, the government said.

Pop singer and civil rights activist, Harry Belafonte died on Tuesday after suffering from congestive heart failure. He, on one hand, started the calypso craze in the US with his music and on the other, became a vigil for the civil rights of the African-American community. Pop singer and civil rights activist, Harry Belafonte died on Tuesday after suffering from congestive heart failure. He, on one hand, started the calypso craze in the US with his music and on the other, became a vigil for the civil rights of the African-American community. He was one of the most successful African-American pop stars in history, but his greatest achievements were as a campaigner for black civil rights in the US. Belafonte died at his Manhattan home and was 96 years old. His wife Pamela was by his side. An award-winning Broadway performer and a versatile recording and concert star of the ’50s, the handsome Belafonte became one of the first Black leading men in Hollywood. He later branched into production work on theatrical films and telepics. As he garnered a lot of fame, his commitment to social causes never took a back seat to his professional work. Harry Belafonte: Life as a Singer and an Activist Harry Belafonte was a Jamaican-American singer and activist who popularised calypso music among international audiences. His breakthrough album was Calypso, which became the first million-selling album by a single artist. He was often dubbed the 'King of Calypso'. Belafonte was born in Harlem, New York in 1927 as the son of poor Caribbean immigrants. He dropped out of school and joined the Navy during the Second World War. He worked as a munitions loader at a base in New Jersey. Also Read | Barbie for all: Mattel launches new doll with Down's syndrome After the war culminated, he pursued his dream of becoming an actor.
World Malaria Day 2023: World Malaria Day is observed every year on April 25 to recognize global efforts to control malaria. According to World Health Organisation (WHO), it “is an occasion to highlight the need for continued investment and sustained political commitment for malaria prevention and control”. The day was instituted by WHO member nations during the World Health Assembly 2007. This year’s theme, “Time to Deliver Zero Malaria: Invest, Innovate, Implement,” calls for raising awareness about the need to implement the available tools and strategies to control and eventually eradicate the disease.

Currently, 3.3 billion people in 106 countries globally are at risk of malaria. In 2012, malaria caused an estimated 627,000 deaths, mostly among African nations. Other parts of the world, like Asia, Latin America and to some extent the Middle East are also affected by malaria.

Malaria: Current global status

According to the most recent World Malaria Report, the global tally of malaria reached 429,000 malaria deaths and 212 million new cases in 2015. The rate of new malaria cases fell by 21 per cent globally between 2010 and 2015, and malaria death rates fell by 29 per cent in the same period. In sub-Saharan Africa, case incidence and death rates fell by 21 per cent and 31 per cent, respectively.

United States

The day, April 25 was designated Malaria Awareness Day in 2007 by President George W. Bush. He called on American citizens to join in on the global to eradicate malaria on the African continent.

Europe

The European Vaccine Initiative announced sixteen new projects for the acceleration of malaria vaccine development on World Malaria Day 2014.

India

On World Malaria Day 2017, India included a series of measures to control the spread of this vector-borne disease. The coastal city of Mangaluru identified open water resources to target for eliminating mosquitoes that spread malaria.

Status of Malaria in India

India’s aim is to be malaria-free by 2027 and to eliminate the disease by 2030. The country has made stupendous progress in thwarting malaria, by reducing the disease by 66 per cent between 2018 and 2022.

In 2021, India accounted for 79 per cent of all malaria cases in Southeast Asia, according to the World Malaria Report 2022, that is released by WHO. India also accounted for 83 per cent of all malaria deaths in the region.

Challenges that still remain

While India has made a significant reduction in its malarial diseases, especially in smaller cities, some challenges still remain and the chances to achieve India’s 2027 malaria-free aim look bleak.

Currently, malaria is a notifiable disease in 33 States and Union Territories in India. It is all set to become a notifiable disease in some other states as well like Bihar, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Meghalaya. Notifiable disease means that now all the malaria cases in these states will require by law to report to government authorities.

But the disruptions caused by Covid-19 have slowed down the mechanism of eliminating the disease. Furthermore, the potential effects of climate change, humanitarian crisis, health system shortfall, and limited donor funding are some challenges in combating malaria.

To receive the official elimination certification from the WHO, India must achieve zero transmission of malaria cases by 2027 and sustain such transmission for the subsequent three years till 2030.

World Malaria Day 2023: Where does India stand in combating malaria?

Northern Lights 2023: Millions of American citizens might be able to witness a glimpse of the northern lights on late Sunday and Monday following a solar flare and a Controlled Mass Ejection in recent days. NOAA’s Space Weather tweeted a ‘full-halo’ CME, a large expulsion of plasma and magnetic field from the Sun’s corona, occurred Friday. It explained it was likely to cause ‘minor’ to ‘moderate' geomagnetic storming on Sunday and Monday.

Therefore, there dancing waves of light, also called aurora borealis, could appear in 30 states, stretching all the way from Washington state to New Jersey.

However, where exactly the lights will fall remains uncertain.

The Aurora Borealis, also known as Northern Lights, is a natural occurrence when electrons from the sun collide with the Earth’s upper atmosphere. This can happen about once a month when solar flares or storms peak.
