Once the symbol of Britain’s imperial grandeur, the Coronation Park in Delhi is now an abandoned site for the locals to take strolls, go cycling and scribble the old walls with their names. The 52-acre land was built as a memorial to remember the legacy of the mighty British Empire, but today the site stands as a lost relic of the Raj.

The park is located 17 km away from the hustle and bustle of Connaught Place and 19 km from India Gate, in New Delhi’s Burari area. The landscaped site that is maintained by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is dotted with monuments, paved pathways, plants and trees.

A large tricolour flag stands tall at the entrance of this British-era memorial which welcomes visitors with free entry.
The Coronation Park was named so, as it witnessed three coronations of British monarchs.

First in 1877, when Queen Victoria was proclaimed the Empress of India, then, in 1903, when the accession of King Edward VII was celebrated. The last coronation at the site was of King George V as Emperor of India in 1911. The last celebration was attended by all princely states.

Relic of lost history

Delhi was chosen as the site of the park because the city boasted a great historical legacy for such royal activities. It held many durbars, an Indian imperial-style mass assembly, which was a perpetuation of a tradition by the ousted Hind and Mughal rulers.

The first Durbar was initiated by Lord Lytton, the then Viceroy of India. It was held in 1877 to mark the proclamation of Queen Victoria as Empress of India and to instil “order and discipline” in Delhi. The Durbar was an extravaganza of pomp and ceremony including an elephant parade in the presence of 70,000 people.

Apart from coronations and durbars, the Queen-Empress, Mary of Teck, used to bestow the Kaisar-i-Hind medal upon all the Governors of the provinces at the site. The Queen also laid the foundation stone for the Viceroy’s residence, which was later changed to being a flood-prone area.

Graveyard of statues and missing plaques

The park has the largest and tallest statue of King George V, which was moved here in the mid-1960s from a site opposite India Gate in the centre of New Delhi. The statue stands opposite the obelisk called the Coronation Memorial, which commemorates the 1911 Durbar when George V laid the foundation stone for the new capital city of New Delhi.

The obelisk is made of sandstone and stands erect over a high-rise square plinth with steps on all four sides. Giving this structure company, there are statues of four Viceroys in stone- Lord Hardinge, Lord Willingdon, Lord Irwin, and Lord Chelmsford.

Some of these statues have missing plaques or washed-away letters on them. Visitors have used the plinths to scribble their names all over.

The desolate park stands in stark contrast to the heavy traffic of northern Delhi's urban sprawl as people are generally unaware of its place in the history of the country.

Conservation measures

In 2005, the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) and the Government of Deli resolved to restore Coronation Park, which was in a state of neglect.

DDA prepared a Draft Zonal Development Plan for the area to develop it as a tourist spot since it is very close to the National Highway 1 (NH1) bypass. In 2017, however, after missing several project deadlines, the park largely remained in a state of neglect.

Coronation Park in Delhi: A site of lost colonial relics and forgotten British glory

As clashes between tribal groups in various parts of Manipur turned violent, the state had to deploy the Army and Assam Rifles on Thursday. Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh to take stock of the situation. Meanwhile, in order to tackle the worsening law and order situation, the government has suspended mobile internet for five days.

The violence broke out on May 3 during a rally called ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ by the Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) in the Torbung area of Churachandpur district to protest the demand for non-tribal Meities for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Thousands took part in the rally and soon clashes broke out between tribal and non-tribal residents, a senior police officer said. To take control of the situation, police fired several rounds of tear gas shells as agitators turned violent.

Shoot-at-sight orders

On the evening of April 4, the government of Manipur issued shoot-at-sight orders to "maintain public order and tranquillity."

The order, passed by the Governor of Manipur, said, "The Governor of Manipur is pleased to authorize all District Magistrates, Sub-Divisional Magistrates and all Executive Magistrates/ Special executive Magistrates detailed by the District Magistrates to issue Shoot at sight orders in extreme cases whereby all forms of persuasion, warning, reasonable force, etc. had been exhausted under the provisions of law under CrPC, 1973."

Curfew in eight districts

In view of the situation, a curfew has been imposed in non-tribal-dominated Imphal West, Kakching, Thoubal, Jiribam, and Bishnupur districts, and tribal-dominated Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, and Tengnoupal districts.

Suspended mobile internet and broadband services services

Mobile services in the state were suspended across the state on Tuesday for five days with immediate effect but broadband services were operational till May 4. As the violence grew to more regions in the state, the governor issued a notice to suspend the broadband services as well for the next five days.

The Manipur government issued a statement stating, "Internet services suspended in Manipur for five days amid incidents of fighting among youths, and volunteers of different communities as a rally was organised by All Tribals Students Union (ATSU) Manipur in protest against the demand for inclusion of Meitei/Meetei in the ST category."

What led to violence in Manipur?

The violence in the state supposedly started because of CM Biren Singh’s recent drive to remove illegal immigrants from settlements in reserve forest areas. On the other hand, the Manipur High Court’s recent direction to the State Government to consider the inclusion of Meitei in ST has led to an outburst from the tribal communities.

The Meties make up 53 per cent of the state’s population, which accounts for a tenth of the former princely state’s land area. They claim they are facing problems in view of “large-scale illegal immigration by Myanmarese and Bangladeshis”.

The hill districts that account for much of the state’s land mass are inhabited mostly by tribals, including the Nagas and Kukis. They are protected from encroachment by various laws. Hence, the Meiei community is demanding for the same to safeguard their lands from illegal immigration.

Demands of the Metei community

The entire movement is spearheaded by one organisation, the Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee Manipur (STDCM), which is demanding the inclusion of Meties in the ST category. They said the demand is being made merely for reservation in jobs, educational institutions, and tax reliefs but “more to protect our ancestral land, culture and identity” which they claimed was being “threatened by illegal migration from Myanmar, Bangladesh and by people from outside the state.”

Two privately-owned islands belonging to Jeffrey Epstein, the tainted American financier and registered sexual offender, were sold to a billionaire investor Thursday. The two islands, Great St.James and Little St. James were abandoned after Epstein committed suicide in 2019 in a Manhattan jail while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges.

Stephen Deckoff, the founder of private equity firm Black Diamond Capital Management, bought the islands for $60 million, Forbes reported Wednesday. Deckoff paid approximately 50 per cent less for the two private islands than the price that was listed last year by Epstein’s estate.

According to a press release by Deckoff, he is planning to “develop a state-of-the-art, five-star, world-class luxury 25-room resort” on the islands that will become operational in 2025.

In a conversation with Forbes, Deckoff revealed that he had never met Epstein and had never been to the islands before they went on the market. In March last year, the islands were listed for a combined price of $125 million.

Deckoff has ties with the US Virgin Islands and is aware of the unsavoury past of these islands. It was reported that Epstein used to use these islands to sexually abuse teenage girls. One island was even sometimes dubbed as the ‘Paedophile Island’.

Who is Chikoti Praveen? The Indian high-profile gambler busted in Thailand

Met Gala, one of the biggest fashion events, was held in New York City on Monday. The world witnessed many Asian celebrities including Indian mega stars like Priyanka Chopra and Alia Bhatt who dazzled the red carpet with their fashion A–game. But did you know that apart from the Indian celebs that walked the carpet at the event, this year’s Gala night had another big Indian connection?

The beautiful red carpet on which the celebs walked was actually ‘made in India’. The carpet, which was not exactly red, but beige with smattering red and blue lines on it was designed by an Indian design house by ‘Neyyt by Extraweave’.

Taking to Instagram, Neyyt shared the news on their official Instagram handle and captioned it, “A proud moment for our team to provide carpets to the Met Gala for the second time in a row. Contemporary design, woven with love, rooted in Kerala. Made in India."

The carpet at the 2023 Met Gala, reportedly, took 60 days to complete. The 6960 square metre carpet was made out of 58 30*4 metre rolls. The carpet was made from sisal fibres, which are derived from the Agave plant and were painted in the United States. This fibre is 120 cm long, sturdy and is used to make floor covering, wall coverings and high-end carpets.

The Alappuzha-based design house is led by two Indian designers, Sivan Santhosh and Nimisha Srinivas.

Last year, the Metropolitan of Art’s Costume Institute, based in New York, decided to shift from the classic red carpet to a more sustainable one. For this transition, they connected with Neyyt by Extraweave and asked them to manufacture the exquisite carpet this season.

This year’s theme at the Met Gala was ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty’. It was based on the new Costume Institute exhibition exploring the work of the iconic designer, Lagerfeld. He died in 2019 at the age of 85 and spent decades of his life creating clothes for Balmain, Patou, Chloe, Fendi and Chanel in addition to his own namesake label.

Other than Priyanka Chopra and Alia Bhatt, entrepreneur Isha Ambani and style icon, Natasha Poonawala also graced the event with their unique styles.

Celebrities like Karlie Kloss, Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie, Kylie Jenner, Jennifer Lopez, Robert Pattison, Jared Letto, Rihanna, Zendaya, Kim Kardashian and Gigi Hadid also marked their presence at the Gala night.

Made in India." The carpet at the 2023 Met Gala, reportedly, took 60 days to complete. Met Gala's India connect: Kerala artisans weave magic into Met Gala's red carpet

A 33-year-old nurse from Chester, England accused of murdering seven babies between June 2015 and June 2016 has taken a stand for herself for the first time in years. Lucy Letby from the Countess of Chester hospital was accused of killing seven babies and attempting to murder 10 infants in the neonatal unit.

On Tuesday, she presented evidence at the Manchester Crown Court where she faces the allegations. The nurse broke down in tears in the witness box after being asked how she is coping with her situation. She told the court that her ‘whole world was stopped’ when she was accused of the ‘sickening’ murders of several babies.

During a search operation in her house, police authorities found a Post-it note in her home with the message ‘I am evil, I did this’. When defence barrister Ben Meyers KC asked about this, Letby reasoned, “because I felt at the time I had done something wrong and I thought I’m such an awful, evil person…that I had made mistakes and not known.”

The nurse said she thought “that somehow I had been incompetent and I had done something wrong to affect these babies. I felt I must be responsible in some way.”

Allegations against Lucy Letby

Letby is accused of fatally injecting newborns with insulin, air or milk during a 12-month period in the neo-natal ward at the hospital. It was also alleged that one of the seven babies, was just 24 hours old when Letby reportedly injected him with air, killing him just 90 minutes after she came on shift. The next day, she also allegedly tried to kill her twin sister.

Letby denies all allegations and said that her job was her life and she will never do something like this. ‘I can’t put it into words, it is just, my whole world was stopped,” she said.

“I think it’s completely changed everything about me, about my life, about the hopes I had for the future. Everything is just gone.”

Various notes recovered from Letby’s house

Police recovered another post from her house, in which she had written, “not good enough”, “I can’t breathe, I can’t focus” and “I hate myself.”

She told the court that she wrote all of this as she was diagnosed with depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder and needed medication to help her sleep.

The University of Chester graduate said she wrote them as she tried to cope with being removed from the neonatal unit in 2016. “I felt immense responsibility,” she said. “I felt I had been incompetent or done something wrong that had harmed children.”

In one of the recovered documents from Letby’s house, she wrote, “BASTARDS” about two of her colleagues, Dr Ravi Jayaram and Dr Stephen Breary, who first raised concerns about her to hospital management.

Letby explained that this was not “the language I would use” but that’s “how I felt about some people…because of the things they’d been saying about me”.

Letby wrote a sympathy card for the baby she is accused of killing

Nurse Letby photographed a sympathy card to the grieving parents of a baby girl to remember her “kind words”. She captured the image on her mobile phone ahead of the young one’s funeral.

She is accused of murdering the prematurely-born infant known as Child I, in the early hours of October 23, 2015.

Letby’s Facebook searches tell a different story

The court was told by the police authorities that between June 2015 and June 2016, Letby made 2,381 Facebook searches, out of which some were about the parents of babies she allegedly murdered.

She told jurors it was “just out of curiosity” and “they were obviously on my mind at that point”. She further said that it was “normal” for her to satisfy her “curiosity by searching for friends, colleagues and parents of children she had treated.”

This was for the first time in eight months since her trial started that Letby presented evidence to the court. She had been in prison waiting for her trial for two and a half years.

UK: Who is Lucy Letby? Nurse accused of ‘killing’ pre-mature babies grilled on ‘I am evil’ note

World Asthma Day 2023: World Asthma Day is observed every year on the first Tuesday of May and is organised by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA). GINA is an organisation established in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1993. The day was first held on May 3, 1998. Every year the day is held with a theme that focuses on an issue related to asthma.

In 2021, when the Covid-19 pandemic was at its peak, the day was held with a theme of ‘Uncovering Asthma Misconceptions’. Similarly, last year, the day was held with the theme of ‘Closing Gaps in Asthma Care’ with a focus on gaps between an asthma patient and the care that he/she should be given.

For 2023, the theme of the day is also focused on care, ‘Asthma care for All’.

Asthma and asthma attack

WHO defines asthma as a major non-communicable disease (NCD) that can affect both children and adults and is the most common chronic disease among children. It is also called bronchial asthma as it affects the lungs. It is called chronic or ongoing as it doesn’t go away and needs prolonged medical treatment.

It currently affects more than 25 million people in the US currently and out of this total, includes more than 5 million children.

Asthma attack: When you breathe normally, muscles around your airways are relaxed which lets air move easily and quietly. During an asthma attack, the muscles around the airways constrict or tighten, making the airways narrow. Air cannot flow freely through constricted airways, making it for the person difficult to breathe.

Who can get asthma?

Any person at any age can develop asthma. People that have allergies or people who are exposed to tobacco smoke are more likely to develop asthma. This also includes passive smoking which is exposure to someone else who is smoking. One can also develop asthma through third-hand smoking which is exposing one to clothing or surfaces in places where someone has smoked.

Causes and common triggers of asthma

There are certain factors that doctors believe can possess higher risk:

1. Environment: People who are exposed to a bad environment that contains allergens, toxins, and fumes are more prone to asthma.

2. Genetics: If your family has a history of asthma or allergic diseases, you have a higher risk of developing the disease.

3. Allergies: Having allergies can raise your risk of developing asthma.

4. Respiratory infections: Certain respiratory infections such as respiratory syncytial virus (RCV) can damage young children’s developing lungs.

Common triggers:

Air Pollution

Dust mites

Pests

Pets’ dried skin flakes

Tobacco smoke

Some early signs and symptoms of asthma

People with asthma usually have obvious symptoms. These signs and symptoms resemble many respiratory infections:

• Chest tightness, pain or pressure.

• Coughing (especially at night).

• Shortness of breath.

• Wheezing

Diagnosis and treatment of asthma

Asthma can be life-threatening if one doesn’t go through the treatment and medical management properly. The goal of asthma treatment is to control symptoms. Asthma control means you:

• Can do the things you want to do at work and home.

• Have no (or minimal) asthma symptoms.

• Rarely need to use your reliever medicine (rescue inhaler).

• Sleep without asthma interrupting your rest.
