India emerged as the frontrunner when it came to international students going to the US, leaving behind China. The report includes all international students enrolled in American schools and universities, from kindergarten to grade 12.

“The number of students from China and India made Asia the most popular continent of origin. Comparable to the drop from the calendar year 2020 to 2021, China sent fewer students in 2022 compared to 2021 (-24,796), while India sent more students ( 64,300)," the report showed.

India races past China to send maximum students to US in 2022: Report

Having a father’s name on a minor’s passport is not a compulsion, and the mother’s name is enough for the identity proof, Delhi High Court said recently. The direction came while deciding a petition in favour of a single mother, noting that the Passport Manual 2020 recognises several conditions allowing the exclusion of the father’s name from the travel document.

The woman filed a plea contending that since she is a single parent and the father has abandoned the child, authorities should not insist that the father’s name be mentioned on the child’s passport.

Justice Pratibha M Singh, in her April 19 judgement, said that under special situations of matrimonial discord between parents, a child’s passport application may have to be considered by the authorities.

“Both the passport manual and the OM (office memorandum) relied upon by the respondents recognise that passports can be issued under varying circumstances without the name of the father. Such a relief ought to be considered, depending upon the factual position emerging in each case. No hard and fast rule can be applied,” the court said.

It accordingly directed that the name and the passport be re-issued in favour of the minor child without the name of the father.

In her plea, the petitioner woman said her child’s father had deserted the child even before birth and that she had raised the child single-handedly. It was noted that as per the divorce settlement, the man had neither visitation rights, nor was he paying any alimony for the minor.

Opposing her plea, the Union government said that it is only in the case of "single unwed parents" where the name of the father need not be mentioned. The counsel appearing for the Centre further said that in the case of "married parents", clause 4.3 of the Passport Manual would be applicable and thus the name of the father would have to be mentioned in the passport.

But rejecting the submission of the government, the court said that in such peculiar cases, where there is no contact of the father with the mother or the child, the name of the father need not be included in the passport.

May Day 2023: May Day is a festival with its roots in Europe that marks the beginning of summer. It is usually celebrated on May 1, which is exactly around halfway between the spring equinox and summer solstice. Some festivities are also held the night before the May Day, which is known as May Eve. It is celebrated across Europe in countries like Germany, the Czech Republic, Sweden, and England.

Different countries follow different traditions to celebrate the days, some even have distinct names for the day, but the essence of the day more or less remains the same. May 1 is also observed as International Workers’ Day since 1899 to commemorate the Haymarket affair in Chicago and the struggle for an eight-hour working day.

Some have the view that May Day and International Labour Day are the same, but these two days have no relation to each other.

May Day 2023: Origins of May Day

May Day has its origins in astronomy. In ancient times, this day was one of the Celtic cross-quarter days, which marked the midway points between the four solstices and equinoxes of the year. But when it comes to early holidays related to this day, it has more roots in agriculture than astronomy.

It was a celebration of sown fields that have started to sprout. It celebrates the springtime festivities with songs and dances around the bonfires. Cattle were driven to pasture and doors of houses were decorated with yellow May flowers.

In the Middle Ages, the Gaelic people celebrated the festival of Beltane, which means ‘Day of Fire’. People used to create massive bonfires and dance at night to celebrate.

It became popular in England with various traditions, eventually arriving in America. Children would dance around the maypole, holding ribbons. People would ‘bring in the May’ by gathering wildflowers and green branches, weaving floral hoops and hair garlands and crowning a May king and queen.

May Day 2023: Some iconic traditions

Making a May Basket

People weave a paper basket containing spring flowers and sweets and leave it on each other’s doorsteps. Some also use a cone with these flowers and generally leave it at neighbour’s doors anonymously.

This tradition was popularised in the 19th and 20th centuries. The custom was to knock on the doorbell and yell ‘May basket’ and then run away. If the recipient caught the giver, he or she was entitled to a kiss.

Louisa May Alcott wrote about May Basket Day in the late 1800s. In the 1920s, some bold schoolchildren hung a May basket on the White House door for First Lady Grace Coolidge.

Maypole dance

Originally the maypole used to be a living tree that was chosen from the woods with much merrymaking. Ancient Celts danced around the tree, praying for the fertility of their crops and all living things. For young people, it was also a time of courtship.

If a young woman and a man paired by sundown, their courtship continued so that the couple could get to know each other and possibly marry each other six weeks later on June’s Midsummer’s Day. This is how the ‘June wedding’ became a tradition.

In the Middle Ages, all villages used to have maypoles. Towns would compete to see who had the tallest or best maypole. Over time, this Old English festival incorporated dance performances, plays, and literature. People would crown‘May Queen’ for the day’s festivities.

Today the Maypole dance is majorly celebrated in schools, from elementary through college, as a fun spring activity.

May Day 2023: Different ways of celebrations

Apart from these traditions, the festival is celebrated in numerous different ways to mark the return of spring.

May Day 2023: Origins of May Day May Day has its origins in astronomy. May Day 2023: Some iconic traditions Making a May Basket People weave a paper basket containing spring flowers and sweets and leave it on each other’s doorsteps. Maypole dance Originally the maypole used to be a living tree that was chosen from the woods with much merrymaking. May Day 2023: Different ways of celebrations Apart from these traditions, the festival is celebrated in numerous different ways to mark the return of spring. 1. Some people wash their face with dew on the morning of May 1 to beautify the skin and bring them some good luck. 2. People in Britain welcome spring by ‘Bringing in the May’ or gathering cuttings of flowering trees like magnolia, lilac or redbud for their homes. 3. May Day 2023: What is May Day? Know about its origin, traditions & why it is celebrated on May 1

President Joe Biden’s speech at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Saturday was all about his humour and wit. Biden seized the opportunity to take jabs at some of his biggest critics - from Tucker Carlson and Elon Musk to politician Kevin McCarthy. He even cracked jokes on himself, speaking about his age in self-deprecating humour.

The annual White House Correspondents' Dinner is usually a light-hearted affair. It is held every year to "promote excellence in journalism" and works ‘to ensure robust news coverage of the president and the presidency.’ Biden rises to the occasion and threw balanced jokes right and left on media figures, politicians and himself.

White House Correspondents' Dinner 2023

The White House Correspondents' Dinner is an annual affair that is being held since 1920, with a few exceptions. The event is a light-hearted look at the past year’s politics. In 2020 and 2021, the White House Correspondents' Dinner was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before all the fun and humour, Biden mentioned that free press is a "pillar of a free society, not the enemy". He then took the names of some of the best journalists in America and thanked them amidst applause from the attendees.

He then said, “Tonight, our message is this: Journalism is not a crime.”

In case you missed Biden’s speech from Saturday, here are some of the best moments from his speech:

Classic joke on his age and dig at The New York Times

In self-deprecating humour, Biden, 80, addressed people’s concerns about his age head-on. “I get that age is a completely reasonable issue," he quipped. "It's on everyone's mind, by everyone I mean The New York Times." The president called out the paper for treating him differently from his predecessor, Donald Trump, and highlighted the double standards he faced. He even read the headline out loud, “Biden’s advanced age is a big issue. Trump’s, however, is not.”

Aiming comic fires at Rupert Murdoch

Biden hit out at the 92-year-old owner of Fox News, Rupert Murdoch, saying sarcastically that he likes him. "How can I dislike a guy who makes me look like Harry Styles?" The crowd erupted in laughter, appreciating the president's ability to poke fun at himself and his advanced age.

Don Lemon, the former CNN anchor, in Biden’s comedic crosshairs

Just days after CNN fired Don Lemon for his controversial comments about women over 40, the president also took a hit at the former anchor. “CNN was like, ‘Wow! Do they actually have $787 million? Whoa!’” he quipped.

"Call me old, I call it being seasoned. You say I am ancient, I say I'm wise," Biden said. He then joked: "You say I'm over the hill, Don Lemon would say, 'That's a man in his prime,'" poking fun at the former CNN anchor who was fired for his sexist and ageist comments against Nikki Haley.

The Dominion lawsuit was a hot topic

It was no surprise that the highly publicised defamation trial against Fox News, which reached a settlement a few weeks back, made it to the White House.

"Your favourite Fox News reporters were able to attend last year as they were fully vaccinated and boosted. This year, with that $787 million settlement, they’re here because they couldn’t say no to a free meal.”

"I'd call Fox 'Honest, fair and truthful.' But then I'd be sued for defamation," Biden cracked to a packed ballroom in Washington, DC.

Trump and DeSantis were not spared either

Biden joked about his predecessor Donald Trump’s recent scandals. He joked that he was offered $10 to keep his remarks less than ten minutes. “That’s a switch, a president being offered hush money,” he joked in reference to Trump’s indictment in an alleged hush money scheme.

Biden also poked fun at Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, against whom Disney filed a lawsuit accusing him of punishing the company for exercising free speech rights with his political influence.

“I had a lot of Ron DeSantis jokes ready, but Mickey Mouse beat the hell out of me, he got there first,” Biden said.
DeSantis is likely to be the top candidate for the GOP presidential nomination if he enters the 2024 race.

Wood Jr.’s witty monologue

Wood Jr. started his monologue with a reference to the settlement between Fox News and Dominion Voting System. Speaking of the members of the press, he said, “Y’all look good. You’re dressed nice, you got the nice threads on, and you got the jewellery glistening. Look like everybody got a little piece of that settlement money from Fox News.”

Biden’s classified documents

It was a quick joke, but one of Wood Jr.’s best jokes of the night came soon after he took the stage. Fiddling with a piece of paper, he remarked to President Biden, “I think you left some of your classified documents up here.”

India’s Abhilash Tomy took part in the Golden Globe Race 2022 on the Bayanat and made us all proud. Many people in the country and around the world are not aware of the 'F1 race of the seas' that requires its participants to use rudimentary devices like sextants and paper charts for navigation. Sailors are confined to boats measuring 32 to 36 feet. For food and water, they completely rely on rationed supplies and techniques such as rainwater harvesting.

This gruelling competition is coming to an epic conclusion and the Kerala-born retired Naval officer, Abhilash Tomy is expected to finish the race on Saturday morning by arriving at Les Sables-d’Olonne. Currently, Kirsten Neuschafer from South Africa has scripted a new record as she leads the race and arrived at the port.

Abhilash Tomy: Sailor, naval officer, inspiration

What makes Abhilash’s solo circumventing even more inspiring is an accident that happened four years ago. In 2018, Abhilash took part in the race as an invitee but failed to complete the journey after his boat got damaged in a storm and he suffered a severe injury to his spine.

On September 21, around 80 days after the race started, Commander Abhilash Tomy and his yacht were swept up by a storm. "My boat was dismasted and destroyed, and I suffered a huge fall which left me with multiple spine fractures," Tomy later recounted in a Facebook post. His legs, like his boat, were functionless.

Abhilash Tomy was exactly between Australia, South Africa, and South India. The nearest continent was Antarctica. An international search-and-rescue (SAR) operation was launched comprising Indian and Australian navies. Abhilash’s damaged yacht was later spotted by an Indian Navy maritime reconnaissance aircraft.

It was the French boat, a fisheries patrol vehicle called Osiris, that reached Commander Tomy first. On September 24, the crew of Osiris sailed alongside Tomy's Thuriya in a rescue boat and pulled the Navy officer out.

All eyes are on the Naval hero

Four years after his near-death experience, Abhilash returned to complete his voyage in the 2022 edition of the race.

Abhilash is currently at number two and as per predictions made by the race organisers, he is likely to cross the finish line on the morning of April 29, a day behind current race leader Kirsten Neuschafer of South Africa.

Therefore, I am carefully steering the yacht. I reduced the speed due to issues with the steering," he said via a satellite phone on Wednesday.

Al Nassr vs Al Raed LIVE streaming: The Cristiano-led Al Nassr will take on Al Raed in a home-game clash in the Saudi Pro League at the KSU Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Friday night. There are only six matches left to play in the 2022-23 campaign and Al Nassr will face a battle to end the season with a trophy, after losing out to Al Wehda in the King Cup semifinal on April 24.

Al Ittihad defeated Ronaldo's club on Thursday, therefore Al Nassr cannot afford to lose any more league points against Al Raed, who have won only one of their past seven league games.

Dinko Jelii, the new manager, had a difficult start with Al Nassr. They were recently eliminated from the King Cup of Champions after losing 1-0 in the semifinals to 10-man Al Waheda. Al Nassr was eliminated in the second competition of the season.

Al Raed, on the other hand, is coming off a 3-0 setback against Al Fateh, their third consecutive defeat in the top division. With 26 points, Al Raed is ranked 11th in the rankings. They are still 9 points clear of the relegation zone, thus they will not be relegated this season. They fought Al Nassr earlier this season and were defeated.

Here’s all the key information on the match, including kickoff time, live stream and TV channels, and lineups.

King Charles III awarded Britain's honorary MBE to UK-based Sanskrit scholar

Fed up with noisy commuters? Well seems like Mumbai has a solution. BEST commuters in the city will now be restricted from speaking loudly on mobile phones while riding the bus. Listening to audio on a phone or watching a video too loud on the bus will be banned now, and carrying of earphones will be essential. The latest circular issued by the undertaking aims to keep the decibel levels in check.

Failure to abide by this rule can invite action under sections 38 and 112 of the Bombay Police Act. The rule was enforced through an internal notification on April 24. A copy of the same notification will be displayed on all the buses.

“Not just the drivers and conductors, even passengers have complained about the unnecessary noise. We have taken this step to avoid any such inconvenience to fellow passengers since BEST buses are public service vehicles. Internally, we issued a notification on April 24,” an official from BEST (Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport) said.

According to the new rule, all passengers using BEST buses, the city’s public transportation system, must put on headphones when watching videos, listening to audio or having conversations on their mobile devices.

General Manager at BEST, Lokesh Chandra on Thursday said that the notice was pending for a long time as they have received several complaints from passengers about the discomfort and annoyance they face from fellow passengers who play loud music on phones.

He said just like while travelling in an aircraft, there are instructions which include using headphones for listening to music, the same will be followed in buses now. “We are issuing similar directives to our commuters with the intention that they do not disturb co-passengers,” he said.

Residents and frequent travellers of BEST buses are praising the move

Twenty-year-old Anushka Rawatt, a student at Vidyalankar Institute of Technology, said it will be a problem for those who cannot afford gadgets such as earphones. “More than songs what is more disturbing is people talking loudly over the phone.”

Naomi Kuruvilla, a student at St Xavier’s College, prefers to read a book while travelling by BEST buses. “Mandating the use of headphones or earphones in any public transport is necessary. At the end of the day, it’s public transport which should be appropriate for use by everyone. Firstly, the overcrowded buses are a headache and then hundreds of voices from phones and people chatting add to the noise.”

This Act, which deals with offences related to annoyance and discomfort in public areas, has a hefty fine of Rs 5000 or three months imprisonment.

Chandra pointed out that the basic idea was to create a deterrent. People travel long distances in these buses and some are coming back from their work, tired. They sometimes try to take a short nap while on the go and loud music hinders their peaceful travel.

US politician-turned-show host, Jerry Springer died due to a ‘brief illness’ at his Chicago home on Thursday morning. He is survived by his daughter Katie Springer and his older sister, Evelyn. The 79-year-old TV presenter will be remembered for his 90’s American talk show that featured everything from, fights to flying chairs but talks.

Springer hosted one of the longest-running shows in the history of American TV, The Jerry Springer Show, which ran nearly three decades. The show became a symbol of low-brow television over the course of almost 5000 episodes.

Fellow chat show host Ricki Lake led the tributes on social media, "Just waking to the very sad news of the passing of my longtime talk show rival and friend Jerry Springer. A lovely man. May he rest in peace."

Broadcaster Piers Morgan described Springer as a "TV icon and such an intelligent, warm, funny man".

His family and friends described him as “irreplaceable”. They said that he will be remembered for his connection with people at heart.

Jerry Springer: Early life

Gerald Norman Springer, or, Jerry Springer was born in London, England to Holocaust survivors who came from Germany. He was raised in Queens, New York City and attended the Northwestern University School of Law. He qualified as a lawyer, from where he first became actively involved in politics. He worked for the campaign of Robert Kennedy in 1968.

Jerry Springer: A mayor

Springer ran for Congress in 1970 but failed to dethrone Republican Donald D. Clancy. In 1971, he was elected to the Cincinnati City Council but had to resign from the council after admitting to soliciting a prostitute. He then ran for office in 1975 and won by a landslide victory. He was re-elected as mayor of the city in 1977 and 1979.

He was considered a ‘gonzo’ type politician with stunts such as staying a night in jail and commandeering a bus after the city took over bus service. But what made him famous worldwide was his 1991 TV sensational TV show.

Jerry Springer: A TV show host

Many people may not remember this but when Springer started his show in 1991, he focused on US political issues. But eventually, his show took a steep turn in the exact opposite direction and became a hit. It is known that it was deliberately done to boost the ratings of the show. His show was so popular in the late 90s that it even beat Oprah Winfrey’s Show in several cities and topped the charts.

Springer repeatedly defended his show against accusations of being too low-brow.

He told the BBC in 2014: "You could decide only to put well-scrubbed, wealthy people who speak the Queen's English on television and just do that but that wouldn't reflect the whole society."

"If all shows were like mine, that would be wrong. But you can't just have a television that is like Friends, Seinfeld, all these wealthy people, good-looking people and you love it," he added.

"If some wealthy, famous person goes on television and talks about who he or she has been sleeping with, we can't get enough of it. We cheer them. But if it's some person of low income, all of a sudden we say trash."

The show had a fixed template for many years in which guests would come to the show and discuss their family problems which eventually turned into exposed adultery and other transgressions. Springer, then, tries to mediate but suddenly the verbal encounters turn into fistfights.

The audience would regularly chant "Jerry! Jerry!" when tensions became heightened during the episodes.

The Jerry Springer Show: Some of the most bizzare and outrageous moments

1. ‘I Married a Horse’

In a 1998 episode, Springer invited three people who were said to have an ‘interspecies relationship’. A man named Mark from Missouri claimed he had married a pony named Pixel. He insisted his marriage was consensual, “If she didn't like it, she could always leave,” he said.

After telling his weird love story, he also disclosed that he was slowly dying from hepatitis as a result of the sex.

2. ‘I Slept With 251 Men in 10 Hours!’

In 1995, Springer spoke to Annabel Chong, a 22-year-old porn actor who took part in the “world’s biggest gangbang”. Despite the predictable slut-shaming that took place, Chong spoke of the experience as an empowering reversal of gender norms. After some years in the industry, Chong went on to work in software development and left her record behind.

3. ‘Married to Your Dad But Want You Back’

A Montana woman fell in love with a California man, who apparently walked 1,200 miles to be with her (he didn’t have a car). When they broke up, she ended up with his father, who she had a child with – her ex-husband’s younger sister. But regret nagged at the woman so much that she tried to reunite with the son on Springer’s show. He declined.
