The US B-1B supersonic heavy bombers made their maiden appearance at the ongoing Exercise Cope India 2023, a joint drill held by the US and Indian forces not far from the India-China border. The bomber also known as Rockwell B1 Lancer ‘Bone’ participated along with other fighter aircraft in the exercise.

The Indian Air Force shared this on its official Twitter handle, “The USAF's 'Strategic Swingwing' over the old home of IAF Swing Wings. The 'Bone' Rockwell B1 Lancer of the @usairforce flying with other participating fighter aircraft during the ongoing #ExCopeIndia 23.”

The bombers, which were seen parked in Bangalore, joined the drill that was held 700 km (435 miles) from the Chinese border, according to media reports.

The planes joined the air combat phase of the exercise from April 13 to 24 at India’s Kalaikunda Air Force Station. The base is located in the eastern state of West Bengal, which is bordered by Bangladesh and Bhutan.

This was the first time for the Rockwell bombers to take part in an exercise in India, that too in the vicinity of the Chinese border.

China seems uneasy

Observers in China see this as Washington’s effort to push India to take a more aggressive stance towards China. “The B-1B is a strategic bomber, so even though it has a relatively low attendance rate [in drills] due to high maintenance, it represents a more powerful strategic deep-strike capability and the ability to strike outside the defensive zone,” Song Zhongping, a former PLA instructor, said.

“The aim of the US in sending this strategic bomber was to highlight its growing partnership with India and to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the strategic arena.”

According to Song, the intentions of the US were “very obvious”: to provoke the relationship between China and India, and to encourage India to adopt an offensive strategy against China.

Washington played a supporting role in India’s border tensions with China. During the deadly border conflicts at Ladakh in 2020, the US military shared information with Indian forces about Chinese military activities in the mountainous region, according to a memoir by then-US defence chief Mark Esper published last year.

Washington also gives Indian troops cold-weather gear during the stand-off, according to the memoir titled A Sacred Oath: Memoirs of a Secretary of Defence During Extraordinary Times.

Exercise Cope 2023 is a bilateral exercise between the Indian Air Force and the United States Air Force. The drills started at Air Force Stations Arjan Singh (Panagarh), Kalakikunda and Agra on April 10. It aims to strengthen mutual understanding between the two Air Forces and share their best strategies, the Ministry of Defense said in a press release.

The next phase of the exercise commenced at AFS Kalaikunda on April 13 which witnessed the participation of B-1B bombers of the USAF. F-15 fighter aircraft of the USAF will join the exercise subsequently.

On the side of IAF, Su-30 MKI, Rafale, Tejas and Jaguar aircraft will participate in the next phase of the exercise, as per the press release. The exercise will be supported by air refuellers and an Airborne Warning and Control System of the IAF. The exercise will conclude on April 24.

In a strange identity-theft case, a woman has been sentenced to 21 years in prison for attempting to kill her lookalike. The 47-year-old Viktoria Nasyrova from New York City attempted to murder her beautician with a slice of poisoned cheesecake. This incident occurred in August 2016, before which Nasyrova also stole the passport and work permit of the beautician, Olga Tsvyk.

Nasyrova, of Brooklyn, was sentenced on Wednesday for the 2016 attempted murder and other counts, the Queens district attorney’s office said. A prosecutor called her a “ruthless and calculating con artist”.

Nasyrova "is going to prison for a long time for trying to murder her way to personal profit and gain", added Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz in a statement on Wednesday.

Bizarre cheesecake-murder plot

On the day of the attempted murder, Nasyrova went to Tsvyk’s house in Queens with a box of cheesecake, eating two pieces herself, and offering the third, which was the poisoned one to the victim. The victim, who is an eyelash stylist started to vomit and went to lie down. She suffered hallucinations and came close to having a heart attack.

Nasyrova laced the cheesecake with a sedative that prosecutors described as a dangerously powerful toxin only found in Russia. Nasyrova belongs to Russia and her murder charges are pending in Russia too.

The chemical was determined to be phenazepam, which is a benzodiazepine developed by the Soviet Union, according to the district attorney’s office.

The victim survived this horrible incident but her Ukrainian passport and around $4000 in cash were stolen.

Charges against Viktoria Nasyrova

Nasyrova and the victim physically resembled each other, with the same complexion and dark hair, the reason why Nasyrova tried to kill her, was so she could steal her identity.

Nasyrova is wanted in Russia too for a 2014 murder case but she did not want to be forced to return to her country, the district attorney’s office has said. Though she has denied that in a CBS News interview.

Nasyrova was convicted of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree attempted assault, second-degree assault, first-degree unlawful imprisonment and petit larceny.

Her defence attorney, Jose Nieves, said they will appeal the conviction, as well as the sentence. He said that he believes the sentence was excessive and that the appeal will focus on evidence and other legal issues.

Before announcing the sentence in the court, the victim, Tsvyk, who was also present in the court, was allowed to speak.

"It was easy for her to steal. It was easy for her to kill," she said, according to the Post.

In 2015, Interpol issued a red notice for her arrest over the murder of a woman in Russia a year earlier. She is accused of killing her neighbour and stealing her life savings. As per US media reports, she has also been accused of drugging and robbing men she met on dating websites.

Russian woman sentenced for trying to kill lookalike Ukrainian woman with cheesecake

The Florida Board of Education expanded the state’s prohibition on teaching students about sexual orientation or gender identity to all K-12 public schools. The move was pushed by the southern US state’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis.

The proposed restriction, which does not require legislative approval, is part of a broader push towards cultural issues that DeSantis has championed for what is widely expected to be a 2024 presidential campaign.

The new rule stipulates that teachers "shall not intentionally provide classroom instruction to students in grades 4 through 12 on sexual orientation or gender identity unless such instruction is ... expressly required by state academic standards."

It also allows for an exemption if the lesson is "part of a reproductive health course or health lesson for which a student's parent has the option to have his or her student not attend."

Teachers who violate the policy could have their teaching licenses and credentials suspended or revoked, according to the text.

This new law was supported by DeSantis last year which barred instruction on gender identity and sexual orientation from kindergarten through third grade. He argued that parents, instead of teachers should decide when to discuss those subjects with their children.

State education officials, on the other hand, said that the rule is meant to ensure that educators stick to Florida’s teaching standards.

“The curriculum and the standards taught in an academic classroom have nothing to do with the school’s compassion and being able to provide services to individual students,” Education Commissioner Manny Diaz said at the meeting in Tallahassee. “They’re not being shunned; none of this is being addressed here.”

Leaders of the Group of Seven advanced economies will discuss Artificial Intelligence and generative AI ChatGPT in the G7 meeting in Hiroshima next month. Kyodo news agency quoted the host country Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida as saying on Wednesday.

A draft communiqué shown on Wednesday was sent to all G7 digital members as the rapid proliferation of such tools has raised concerns about their potential impact on society.

Kydodo quoted Kishida saying “International rules need to be created”, for such tools, in a meeting with executives of regional newspapers. The topic is also expected to be mentioned in a joint statement by the leaders.

Kishida’s comment comes after widespread calls for regulating advanced AI systems such as ChatGPT among other programmes.

ChatGPT was launched in November 2022 as a prototype and stands for Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer. It is driven by a machine-learning model that works much like a human brain. It is pre-trained with massive amounts of data that allows it to simulate human-like responses.

Many countries have already banned the use of ChatGPT on all platforms, Italy being the most recent one and also the only European country to ban the programme.

Last week, EU lawmakers urged world leaders to hold a summit to find ways to control the development of such systems, while US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said last week he had launched an effort to establish rules on AI to address national security and education concerns.

Last week, the Internal Affairs Minister of Japan Takeaki Matsumoto said that world leaders should discuss rules for reliable AI that can be used safely. He said this at a press conference after a Cabinet meeting and will discuss the same during the digital and tech ministers meeting f the G7 nations later this month.

He spoke about establishing a framework to share rules on the management and operation of AI, as well as helping businesses that are attempting to compile international technological standards to that end.

“We hope that participating countries will discuss concrete steps to realize our joint vision,” Matsumoto stressed.

The digital and tech ministers’ meeting is scheduled to take place in Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture, on April 29-30.

The G7 will also draw up an action plan for constructing secure network infrastructure to support emerging and developing countries, promote collaboration to improve the connectivity of undersea cables and address the blocking or limiting of internet access by some countries.

Watch | Foreign Ministers from G7 nations meeting in Karuizawa, Japan × Last week, the Internal Affairs Minister of Japan Takeaki Matsumoto said that world leaders should discuss rules for reliable AI that can be used safely. A massive fire broke out on Tuesday at a Beijing hospital that left at least 21 people killed. The fire broke out on April 18 at 6:00 pm (local time) at Beijing’s Changfeng Hospital. The rescue operations went on for more than two hours after the fire was extinguished and 71 patients were evacuated from the hospital.

The videos from the hospital, which is in the capital city’s Fengtai district, have gone viral all over the internet as people clenched to air conditioning units in a desperate move to save themselves from the fire. Some people were also seen clinging to ropes and jumping off the building.

Pulwama terror attack and Balakot airstrikes have also been a point of contestation between political parties, both in India and its neighbour Pakistan. Though the majority of the people see Pulwama as a terror attack and the Balakot airstrike as a responsive measure to this attack, there are still a handful of voices that have conflicting views on both. Due to these views, the 2019 Pulwama terror attack always found itself in a political quagmire.

In the latest political contention, the former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Satya Pal Malik allegedly claimed that the Indian government had the option of airlifting CRPF soldiers instead of sending them across the Jammu-Srinagar highway in a convoy.

In February 2019, 40 Indian paramilitary soldiers were killed in a suicide attack in the Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Malik further claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly asked him to keep quiet after Malik told him that the Pulwama terror attack happened because the Centre did not provide aircraft to transport CRPF soldiers, despite receiving intelligence inputs about such a threat.

Ongoing political spectacle over Pulwama attack

Malik, who was the J&K Governor during the Pulwama terror attack and the withdrawal of special status granted under Article 370, made several explosive comments as part of an hour-long interview with journalist Karan Thapar for The Wire in which he described PM Narendra Modi as “ill-informed” about J&K.

Soon after this interview, a political circus got into play, with some politicians calling Malik’s claims an “explosive truth”.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh accused the BJP-led Union government of "minimum governance and maximum silence" and asked for its response to the allegations made by Satypal Malik.

"It is the government's responsibility to answer," he said, adding that Congress will continue to ask questions that concern national security.

There has been no reaction from the government since Malik's interview with the news portal was released, while the BJP has said that there were serious questions about his credibility and cited various statements made by him in recent years.

Pakistan now blames India for Pulwama

Pakistan was quick to react to Malik’s interview and was swift enough to manoeuvre the narrative according to India’s domestic politics over the issue. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued a statement on Sunday, and tried to assert that the Indian government “exploited the situation” after the Pulwama attack for “political gains”.

Pakistan is trying this old tactic of taking advantage of the situation, years after one of its ministers on the floor of the house claimed the credit for the Pulwama attack. The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) issued a statement in 2019 condemning the Pulwama terror attack and blaming the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), the Pakista-based terror outfit after it took the responsibility for the attack.

“The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the heinous and cowardly suicide bombing in Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in over 40 Indian paramilitary forces dead and dozens wounded on February 14, 2019, for which Jaish-e-Mohammed [JeM] has claimed responsibility,” the statement said.

Pakistan turned defensive on this and the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, said in an interview that JeM “did not claim responsibility [for the attack]”, and that there is confusion over such claims.
