Amazon Prime Video launches a new accessibility feature called Dialogue Boost. This feature aims to increase the volume of dialogue relative to background music and effects, creating a more comfortable viewing experience that will not be interrupted by any background noise.

The feature comes almost a year after Prime Video switched up its interface to include new navigation menus and live television. As the name suggests, the accessibility feature is an AI-based approach that allows viewers to adjust the volume of spoken dialogue without changing the volume of the background music or sound effects.

Prime Video boasts that it is ‘the first global streaming service to offer this feature’. This feature is launched on select Amazon Originals worldwide.

The television shows include Jack Ryan, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, and Harlem. Select movies named in the press release are The Big Sick, Beautiful Boy, and Being the Ricardos. The feature can be found in the drop-down menu along with the subtitles and audio. Dialogue Boost will roll out to more titles throughout the year.

"At Prime Video, we are committed to building an inclusive, equitable, and enjoyable streaming experience for all our customers,” said Raf Soltanovich, VP of Technology at Prime Video and Amazon Studios.

“Our library of captioned and audio-described content continues to grow, and by leveraging our technological capabilities to create industry-first innovations like Dialogue Boost, we are taking another step to create a more accessible streaming experience.”

Dialogue Boost analyses the original audio in a movie or series and intelligently identifies points where dialogue may be hard to hear above background music and effects. Then, speech patterns are isolated and audio is enhanced to make the dialogue more clear.

The feature is AI-based and delivers a targeted amplification at the centre channel in a home theatre system. As a result, Dialogue Boost can be enjoyed anywhere the Prime Video experience is available.

How to find Dialogue Boost in Amazon Prime

Viewers can choose which level of Dialogue Boost they would like to use via the audio and subtitles drop-down menu. The audio tracks are labelled, ‘English Dialogue Boost: Medium’ and English Dialogue Boost: High’.

As per the information, Dialogue Boost is available across all devices that support the Prime Video experience and offers a capability that was previously only available to customers with high-end theatre systems, specialised audio equipment, or select smart TVs.

India ranked 126th in the 2023 World Happiness Index and Finland ranked 1st in that index, following Nordic countries, such as Denmark and Iceland. But have you ever wondered which Indian state could be the happiest in the country? A recent study carried out by Rajesh K Pillania, a professor of strategy at the Management Development Institute in Gurugram, has declared Mizoram as the happiest state in India.

As per a report by ANI, the state has attained a 100% literacy rate and provides its students with opportunities to develop their skills and abilities even under challenging conditions. The report further noted that this state is the second one in India to have achieved 100% literacy.

Parameters of happiness index

"Mizoram's happiness index is based on six parameters including family relationships, work-related issues, social issues and philanthropy, religion, COVID-19's effect on happiness, and physical and mental health," the report said.

"A student of the Government Mizo High School (GMHS) in Aizawl, Mizoram, has had to face many difficulties since his father abandoned his family when he was young. Despite this, he remains optimistic and excels in his studies. He hopes to become a chartered accountant or appear for civil services exams if his first choice does not work out," the report said.

Reasons why Mizoram is India’s happiest state

The beautiful Northeastern state of Mizoram, which means the ‘land of Mizos’ topped the happiness index majorly because of its youth, which is highly motivated toward studies.

The report said that youth in the Mizo community, irrespective of their gender, tend to pursue financial independence from a young age and consider no task as too small. A very low incidence of gender discrimination can be observed within the state. This will encourage other states as well to focus on young children’s education at all levels.

The point to be noted is that despite the state having a high prevalence of broken families and working mothers, children are not wrong-tracked but want to gain financial independence as soon as possible.

Khiangte, a private school teacher in the state said, "When both genders are taught to earn their living, and neither is dependent on the other, why should a couple continue to live together in an unhealthy setting?"

According to students in the state, their teachers are not only educators but also their best friends, and they feel comfortable sharing anything with them without fear or shyness. This teacher-student relationship further encourages youth to study and boost their self-confidence.

Upbringing plays a crucial role in the happiness of Mizoram's youth, who live in a casteless society. Moreover, parental pressure for academic success is relatively lower in the region.

The rest of India can take Mizoram as an example and learn a lesson or two, which can be imbibed at different levels.

Mizoram: A role model

The Lawngtlai district of Mizoram once had the reputation of being one of the state’s most backward and disaster-prone areas. Years after, now this district is known for its concept of ‘Kan Sikul, Kan Huan’ (My School, My Farm).

The IAS officer of the district, Shashanka Ala introduced this programme when she realized that fruits and vegetables coming from Assam would often perish and not reach the locals. Due to this, children were being fed a poor diet, which led to the highest percentage of stunted children under the age of five in Mizoram.

To tackle this, Ala started this programme with the headmaster of schools. The headmaster grouped the children into various batches to ensure that every child got at least an hour of ‘Nutrition Garden; time every week.

Europe tops in legalising same-sex marriages

According to Pew Research Center, so far 30 countries and territories have enacted national laws to allow gays and lesbians to marry, most of which are in Europe. Here are 7 countries that allowed the same in the recent past.

Greece became the first Christian Orthodox-majority country to legalise same-sex marriage on 15 Feb 2024. The same-sex couples will now be allowed to adopt children in Greece.

In May 2020, Costa Rica became the first Central American country to legalize same-sex marriage. The country’s highest court in 2018 ruled that the nation’s law banning same-sex marriage was unconstitutional.

On June 12, Ecuador’s Constitutional Court ruled that that same-sex couples have a right to marry. It became the fifth country in Latin America to allow gays and lesbians to wed.

On May 17, 2019, Taiwan’s legislature passed a bill legalizing same-sex marriage and making the island nation the first country in Asia to permit gays and lesbians to wed.

On January 1, 2019, Austria joined the vast majority of Western European countries in legalizing same-sex marriage. The country had granted gay and lesbian couples the right to enter into a civil partnership in 2010.

On December 7, 2017, the Australian Parliament passed legislation allowing gay and lesbian couples to legally wed. Along with New Zealand, Australia became the second country in the Asia-Pacific region to make same-sex marriage legal.

Malta’s parliament almost unanimously voted to legalize same-sex marriage in July 2017, despite opposition from the Catholic Church.

On June 30, 2017, Germany became the 15th European country to enact legislation allowing same-sex couples to wed by 393-226 votes.

On April 28, 2016, Colombia became the fourth country in Catholic-majority South America to legalize same-sex marriage, following Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil.

Eleven years after same-sex marriage became lawful in Massachusetts, the United States Supreme Court ruled that it is guaranteed under the Constitution throughout the country.

Heatwave update | IMD forecast no respite for next few days in these states- Tips to prevent heatstroke

Lyrids meteor shower 2023: The Lyrid meteor shower that started on April 16 will reach its peak in the early hours of April 23. This shower is created by dust from the tail of comet C/1861 G1 (Thatcher). Lyrids are not generally vast in number, only about 18 an hour are expected, but they are often very bright and fast-moving. Some of the more spectacular ones are known to burn up so brightly that they cast shadows.

Lyrid meteor showers are named after a constellation called, Lyra. These are one of the oldest recorded meteor showers, which were seen over 2500 years ago, as per some historical Chinese text. The fireballs in the meteor shower are created by debris from comet Thatcher, which takes about 415 years to orbit around the Sun.

This year, viewing conditions are expected to be good because the moon has just 9 per cent of its surface illuminated, so even faint meteors will be visible. Occasionally, brief outbursts of 100 meteors an hour have been recorded for the Lyrids. The last report of such an outburst came from the US in 1982 and before that Japan in 1945, and Greece in 1922.

April 20 - There will be a new moon.

April 23 - The crescent moon hangs just five degrees above Venus in the west after sunset, according to NASA.

April 23 - Marker of the peak of the Lyrids meteor shower in the morning. According to NASA, the best time to view is between midnight and dawn.

April 25 - This time, the moon finds its way to planet Mars in the evening, high in the west.

Lyrid Meteor Shower 2023: How to witness the oldest-ever meteor shower

To witness the radiant meteor falling back on Earth, all you need is a clear sky and lots of patience. There is no need for any special equipment or skill set to view a meteor shower. The following tips can help enhance your shooting star viewing experience:

• Find a secluded viewing spot, away from the city lights. Once at the venue, your eyes may take 15 to 20 minutes to get used to the dark.

• Dress for the weather, and make sure you are comfortable, especially if you plan to stay out long. Bring a blanket or a comfortable chair with you, meteor watching can be a waiting game.

• Once you have found your viewing spot, lie down on the ground and look at the sky. You can use our Interactive Meteor Shower Sky Map or the table above to find the direction of the radiant; the higher the radiant is above the horizon, the more meteors you are likely to see.

• Meteor showers appear to originate from the radiant, but meteors can appear in any part of the sky.
