Northern lights are visible in the northernmost parts of Norway in Alta and Svalbard. The port city of Tromso is a popular spot and gives the chance to book a boat trip away from the city to witness the northern lights.

Northern Sweden is a must-visit option for aurora hunters. The village of Abisko and Kiruna, Sweden's northernmost city are also popular spots to witness the northern lights.

Finnish Lapland is home to a number of spots where you can see the lights, some scientific and more extravagant than others. Revontulli, Nellim and Kakslauttanen are the best location in the country to witness the auroras.

Iceland has built an entire industry on the northern lights, so there are stays and tours to suit pretty much every budget and length of stay. Reykjavik, Thingvellir and Kleifarvatn are the most popular destinations in the country to witness these lights.

The Orkney and Shetland Isles are best to chase auroras. In Shetland, the lights are known as the Mirrie Dancer, a beautifully poetic phrase that perfectly describes their flitting and flickering.

The Northwest Territories in Canada also get a fair share of the beautiful lights. Yukon, between the Northwest Territories and Alaska, is another option that can offer similar spectacular landscapes.

In the USA, northern lights are visible from Alaska, Idaho and Maine. The wilderness of these places and the lack of light pollution make them an amazing place to begin the chase for auroras.

Britain got a new Queen on May 6 after King Charles III's coronation amid spectacular pomp and pageantry at Westminster Abbey in London. Camilla Parker Bowles has come a long way from being perceived as a threat to the British monarchy to taking the title of Queen. In the turbulent 1990s, she was vilified as ‘the other woman’ in Charles’ marriage to his first wife Princess Diana. But slowly, though painstakingly, she gained acceptance from the common British people for offering steadfast support to her husband.

She was present by the side of King Charles when he publicly grieved his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, and stepped into his new role. She is the love of his life, a decades-long counsellor and Charles’ confidante. And on May 6, Camilla was crowned the 29th Queen Consort at the iconic Westminster Abbey.

We take a look at the life and journey of Camilla, the new Queen.

Life before King Charles III

Camilla was born Camilla Rosemary Shand in London and was raised in East Sussex and South Kensington. She got her education in England, Switzerland, and France. In 1973, she married a British Army officer named, Andrew Parker Bowles. They divorced in 1995.

Camilla and Andrew’s wedding was considered the ‘society wedding of the year’ with 800 guests. Royal guests were present at the ceremony and reception, including Queen Elizabeth II’s daughter, Anne and Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. Camilla gave birth to two children with Andrew, Tom and Laura. Tom is the godson of King Charles III.

After 21 years of marriage, Camilla and Andrew divorced in January 1995 on the grounds that they had been living separately for years.

Relationship with Charles and second marriage

Camilla reportedly met then-Prince Charles in mid-1971. At that time, Andrew ended his relationship with Camilla and was courting Princess Anne, Charles’ sister. It is known that Camilla and Charles were romantically involved periodically both before and during each of their first marriages. Their relationship was highly publicised in the media and attracted attention for all the wrong reasons.

After a lot of push against Camilla within the Royal family for various reasons, the two finally got married on February 10, 2005, in Windsor Castle. From the marriage until her husband’s accession in 2022, she was known as the Duchess of Cornwall.

Camilla, Charles and Diana

When Charles met Diana Spencer in 1981, he was still seeing Camilla. In Diana: Her True Story, author Andrew Morton wrote that Diana almost called off the wedding two days before it was due to take place after she found a bracelet Charles got made for Camilla. The bracelet had the letter ‘F’ and ‘G’ engraved on it, which were the initials for their names for each other — Fred and Gladys.

Charles insisted that they only rekindled their romance when his marriage had "irretrievably broken down". But as Diana so memorably stated in the now-discredited 1995 Panorama interview "There were three of us in this marriage". Camilla's divorce was finalised in 1995. Charles and Diana's marriage officially ended in 1996.

The image makeover

For a long period of time after Charles and Diana’s divorce, she was always seen as the ‘other woman’ by the general public of the UK. But quite slowly, she won over the British public with her down-to-earth personality and her charitable work. She notably worked against domestic violence, rape and sexual abuse, the causes that she says she’ll continue to support as queen.

Camilla made dozens of official visits with charities each year, and her warm personality and ease at connecting with people no doubt helped her image makeover; those who've met her often describe her as warm and likeable.

The question of Camilla’s title

Choosing a title for Camilla has been a long point of controversy. When Charles and Camilla married, instead of naming her Princess of Wales, the palace granted her the less prestigious title Duchess of Cornwall. It was also said that once Charles became king, she would be known as “Princess Consort,” not “Queen” or “Queen Consort.”

But Queen Elizabeth’s late support for Camilla being called “Queen Consort” paved the way for the change. The “Queen Consort” title is typical of the royal marriage, with Queen Elizabeth II’s mother known as that when her husband, King George VI, was king.

Camilla still hasn’t received the kind of popularity that was expected by Buckingham Palace. She currently ranks ninth among the royals, according to a YouGov poll earlier this year, below Charles, William, and others.

Cyclone Mocha: The storm developing in the Bay of Bengal may intensify into a severe cyclone with winds blowing up to 120 km/h over the sea, said Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) chief DR M Mohapatra.

The cyclone is likely to intensify into a depression on May 9 and into Cyclone Mocha on May 10. It is expected to move towards the Bangladesh and Myanmar coasts around May 12. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are also expected to receive severe rainfall.

A warning has already been issued to small sea-faring vessels and fishers not to venture out from Tuesday onwards. The Met department also asked authorities to regulate offshore activities and shipping near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands accordingly, from May 8 to May 12.

Under the influence of the cyclonic circulation in the southeast Bay of Bengal, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the region on May 8, the Met department said. IMD officials have urged people not to panic about a possible cyclone but to remain prepared to face any eventuality.

Switzerland is the most innovative economy in the world in 2022, for the 12th year in a row. Due to its relative lack of natural resources, the country has for a long time focused on research and development.

The USA is the second-most innovative country in the world. Its developed infrastructure, best universities and policies make it easier for entrepreneurs and startups to attract funding and investments.

Sweden has a long history of innovation, and its startup infrastructure has gained a lot of attention worldwide. More than 3 per cent of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) is utilised in R&D (research and development).

The UK is in the fourth spot in the Global Innovation Index 2022. While the UK’s expenditure on innovation has been lower than some of its competitors, the government has committed to boosting investment in R&D to 2.4% of GDP by 2027.

The Netherlands is the fifth-most innovative country in the world. Its innovation culture has been long-standing, as they are the inventors of Wi-Fi and bluetooth. The country is home to 13 unicorns, ranking fourth in Europe for financial investors to support new ideas.

South Korea is the sixth-most innovative country in the world and ranks 1 in the South East Asia, East Asia and Oceania category in terms of innovation. Korea’s cultural and creative services exports marked the most significant jump last year.

Singapore is the second Asian country in this index. Over the past few decades, the country has established itself as a hub for innovation and research and development (R&D), offering companies around the world a robust platform to grow their businesses in the region.

World Red Cross Day 2023: World Red Cross Day, also known as Red Crescent Day is celebrated annually to remember and appreciate the principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. It is celebrated every year on May 8, which is the birth anniversary of Jean-Henry Dunant, the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Dunant was born in 1828 and conferred the first Nobel Peace Prize.

Each year the day is celebrated with a theme focusing on a particular subject. During Covid-19, in 2020, the theme was #Keepclapping, to appreciate the efforts of all frontline workers. Likewise, #Unstoppable and #BeHumankind were the themes of World Red Cross Day in 2021 and 2022 respectively.

World Red Cross Day: Theme

This year’s theme of World Red Cross Day is ‘Everything we do comes #fromtheheart’. The theme celebrates the people in our communities, “the person next door”, who often are the first ones to step up and support those in need around them. They could be anyone, someone at work, a neighbourhood business owner, a Red Cross or Red Crescent community volunteer, someone at the gym, shop or market, or just someone living close by.

In whichever way they support us, they do it with love and #fromtheheart.

What was the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement?

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement was a humanitarian movement with about 97 million volunteers, members and staff worldwide. It was founded to protect human life and health and to ensure respect for all human beings. Within it, there were three separate organisations that are legally independent from each other but are united within the movement through common basic principles, objectives, symbols, statutes, and governing organisations.

World Red Cross Day: History and origin

The idea for an annual day of celebration that would also contribute to peace was introduced just after World War I. This initiative came to be known as the ‘Red Cross Truce’ and was studied by an International Commission established by the 14th International Conference of the Red Cross.

Only after World War II, in 1946, the Tokyo proposal was studied by the League of Red Cross Societies (LRCS), renamed the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in 1991.

Two years later, having considered the principles of the truce and its applicability across different regions of the world, the proposal of an annual International Red Cross Day was adopted and the first Red Cross Day was celebrated on 8 May 1948. The official title of the day changed over time and became ‘World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day’ in 1984.

World Red Cross Day: Fundamental principles

The fundamental principles of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent Movement are based on the following:

Humanity

Impartiality

Neutrality

Independence

Voluntary Service

Unity

Universality

World Red Cross Day: Responsibilities of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)

The core tasks of the committee which are derived from the Geneva Conventions and its own statutes are the following:

-to monitor compliance of warring parties with the Geneva Conventions

-to organize nursing and care for those who are wounded on the battlefield

-to supervise the treatment of prisoners of war

-to help with the search for missing persons in an armed conflict

-to organize protection and care for civil populations

-to arbitrate between warring parties in an armed conflicts

World Red Cross Day 2023: Theme, historical significance, principles & all you need to know

Karnataka Elections 2023: According to the Election Commission, the Karnataka Assembly Elections are all set to take place on May 10, with vote counting taking place on May 13. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar stated last month that money power, in addition to urban and youth apathy, is a crucial issue in this electoral battle.

Both the big parties of the state, Congress and Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) have already announced their manifestoes and their candidates. The result of the highly charged election will also be significant for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Here is a look at some of the key constituencies for the upcoming Karnataka Assembly Elections 2023.

Shiggaon

Current incumbent Chief Minister of the state, Basavaraj Bommai, won the Shiggaon constituency in 2018 with a margin of 9,265 votes and defeated the Congress rival Sayed Azeempeer Khadri. This was Bommai’s third win from the seat since 2008.

After initially nominating Mohammed Yousuf Savanur, president of Anjuman-e-Islam Hubballi-Dharwad, Congress replaced him with Yasir Ahmed Khan Pathan, a local in Shiggaon. Pathan however does not seem to have made any headlines in the recent past and information about him remains obscure.

On April 19, Bommai began campaigning in his constituency and held a roadshow with BJP National President JP Nadda and Kannada film star Kichcha Sudeep. Addressing the crowd, Bommai said, “I have been blessed with your faith for 15 years. Our bond is divine. No one can come in the way of this. Till my last breath I will serve you.”

Chikkamagaluru

The former right-hand man of BJP heavyweight leader and national general secretary, CT Ravi, HD Thammaiah had quit the party and joined Congress in February 2023. He will now be going head-on against his former mentor CT Ravi from the Chikkamagaluru constituency.

In 2018, Ravi won the Chikkamagaluru seat with a margin of 26,314 votes, defeating Congress candidate BL Shankar and marking his fourth win from the seat.

Thammaiah, while quitting BJP, had said, “I have been working in the BJP and had fulfilled my responsibilities in various posts since 2007, but the current political developments have disappointed me. As a result, I wish to resign from my post as convener of the district unit as well as a primary member of the BJP. I wish to express gratitude to all office bearers, heads and members of all boards, forums and units of the BJP, who helped me in my work for 17 years.”

Hubballi-Dharwad Central

Former Chief Minister and BJP party member, Jagadish Shettar also quit the party on April 16 and resigned as MLA, after being denied a ticket for the May 10 Assembly elections.

Shettar, who is responsible for the growth of the BJP in Uttara Kannada, then joined the Congress in the presence of the party's national president Mallikarjun Kharge and other senior leaders.

As a BJP candidate, Shettar had won from the Hubballi-Dharwad central seat in 2018, defeating Congress candidate Dr Mahesh Nalwad with a margin of 21,306 votes, marking his sixth win in the Assembly elections.

After Shettar’s crossover, Tenginkai said, “BJP wants the new generation to enter politics. I am confident of winning from Hubballi-Dharwad Central seat…Caste should not be an agenda in politics.” It remains to be seen whether Shettar’s popularity can be defeated or not in the constituency.
