Carbon Dioxide (CO2)

CO2, a greenhouse gas, has become a major concern as climate change becomes a bigger issue. According to the 2021 data by Global Carbon Atlas, the largest CO2 emitters are China, the US, India, Russia and Japan.

China

China is the largest emitter of carbon dioxide in the world, with 11,472 million metric tonnes of emissions in 2021. The primary source of CO2 in China is fossil fuels.

India

India is the third-largest CO2 emitter, with 2,710 million metric tonnes of total carbon dioxide emissions in 2021. Coal is the main energy source of India, making up for about 45% of the country's energy needs.

Russia

Russia is the fourth-largest contributor to CO2 emissions in the world, emitting 1,756 million metric tonnes in 2021. Russia has one of the largest natural gas deposits in the world and natural gas is the primary source of energy in the country.

Japan

Japan is the fifth-largest producer of CO2, with 1,067 million metric tonnes of emissions in 2021. Japan's energy fuel mix changed after the 2011 nuclear accident in Fukushima. Oil is the largest source of energy in the country.
