A rare 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit large parts of western France on Friday evening, with the seismology bureau BCSF calling it "very strong" amid reports of some damage to buildings.

Ecology transition minister Christophe Bechu said it was "one of the strongest quakes registered on the mainland".

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) said that a 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit France on Friday.

The epicentre of the earthquake was near a commune in the Charente-Maritime region of western France, at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), said GFZ. 
 
AFP news agency said its records show that the last earthquakes of similar strength in France had struck in the early 2000s. 
 
In the Deux-Sevres department one was person was slightly injured and treated on the spot, the prefecture said.

"A series of material damage was reported from the southwest of the department," with stone falling off buildings and cracks appearing in walls, the prefecture's statement said.

Further south in the neighbouring Charente-Maritime department cracks appeared in buildings and a power line came down leaving 1,100 homes in the dark.

The earthquake was felt as far afield as Rennes in the north and Bordeaux in the southwest.

In the city of Tours, on the Loire river, law student Lea Franke told AFP,&nbsp;"I stood up and the whole apartment was shaking ... it lasted for several seconds then stopped."

"I was very frightened, I live on the third floor...I thought the floor was going to cave in," she added.

Earlier, the GFZ said that the measurement was 5.5 which was later revised to 4.8.

Relatives of both these victims held a vigil on Wednesday (June 14) and paid tributes. Both of the students studied at Nottingham University. They were found dead on a city centre street with stab wounds on Tuesday (June 13).

"We were so incredibly proud of Grace's achievements and what a truly lovely person she was. She leaves behind devastated extended family and friends," said Kumar's family.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he was being continuously briefed about the developments in the Nottingham attack case. He said, “My thoughts are with those injured, and the family and loved ones of those who have lost their lives."

He also thanked the emergency services for dealing with the "shocking incident" in the city, which is home to more than 320,000 people.

"My father even bowed down and pleaded before them, but they remained unmoved. It seemed wrong to me and I told them to leave the place without marriage,” she added.

Eric Goldstein, the agency’s executive assistant director for cybersecurity, in a statement to CNN, said that the security agency is "providing support to several federal agencies that have experienced intrusions after the discovery of a weakness in the file transfer software MOVEit."

“We are working urgently to understand impacts and ensure timely remediation,” he added.

It is not yet clear if the Russian-speaking cyber gang, which has claimed responsibility for several cyberattacks in the past, was the one behind intrusions faced by federal agencies.

As per CNN reports, a CISA spokesperson did not comment on being asked as to who was responsible for the breaching of federal agencies and how many were affected by the hacking crusade.

As per news agency Reuters, the FBI and National Security Agency also did not immediately respond to emails seeking details on the breaches.

CISA Director Jen Easterly told MSNBC on Thursday that she was absolutely confident that there will be no significant impacts from the hacks on federal agencies.

Created by Progress Software Corp, the MOVEit tool is used to transfer files by organisations between their partners or customers.&nbsp;

John Hammond, a senior researcher at the security firm Huntress, said that this tool could also be used by financial institutions that require their customers to upload their data to apply for a loan.

"There's a whole lot of potential for what an adversary might be able to get into," he said.

The online extortion group Cl0p, which claimed responsibility for the MOVEit hack, previously had said that it would not exploit any data taken from government agencies.

"If you are a government, city or police service do not worry, we erased all your data," the group said in a statement on its website.

As per the Reuters report, Cl0p or Progress also did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

In a shocking development, the death toll in a probe linked to a Kenyan pastor who advised followers to starve themselves in order to "meet Jesus Christ" has crossed 300 after 19 new bodies were found on Tuesday, said a senior official.

As per AFP reports, police believe that the dead bodies discovered in a forest close to the Indian Ocean town of Malindi are the followers of preacher Paul Nthenge Mackenzie, who has been in police custody since April 14.

He is due to face charges of "terrorism" in the case.

"The death toll has now risen to 303 after the 19 bodies were exhumed," AFP quoted Coast Regional Commissioner Rhoda Onyancha as saying.

As per the regional official, more than 600 people are still missing.

The self-styled pastor and founder of the Good News International Church handed himself over to the police on April 14 and was denied bail.

According to chief government pathologist Johansen Oduor, though starvation appears to be the main cause of death, some of the victims, including children, were strangled, beaten or suffocated.

Kenyan starvation cult Death toll surpasses 300 after authorities find 19 more bodies

A nearly 3,000-year-old mummy was discovered by Peruvian archaeologists near the capital city of Lima on Wednesday. This is the latest discovery in the Andean nation dating to pre-Hispanic times.

The remains of its hair and skull were initially found by researchers and students of San Marcos University&nbsp;in a cotton bundle&nbsp;during an excavation.

Further work at the Huaca La Florida archaeological site, in the central Rimac Valley, later uncovered the rest of the mummy.

The archaeologists believe that the mummy was probably from the Manchay culture, which developed in the valleys of Lima between 1500 and 1000 BC.

Archaeologist Miguel Aguilar said that the person, who had undergone the mummification process, was likely offered up during the construction of temples built in a U-shape that pointed towards the sunrise.

"We have discovered a pre-Hispanic burial with a mummy. It was a person who had undergone a mummification process on the inside. It was a stone tomb. The person who had been left or offered up (a reference to sacrifice) in this area happened in the last phase of the construction of this temple. It is approximately 3,000 years old," Reuters quoted Aguilar as saying.

"It most probably belongs to the Manchay culture. It is a culture that developed in the valleys of Lima between 1,500 and 1,000 BCE. They are associated with the culture of the U-shaped temples, which are a group of buildings that have a U-shape in their layout and are always pointing towards the sunrise," he added.

Archaeologist Miguel Aguilar said that the person, who had undergone the mummification process, was likely offered up during the construction of temples built in a U-shape that pointed towards the sunrise. "We have discovered a pre-Hispanic burial with a mummy. It was a person who had undergone a mummification process on the inside. It was a stone tomb. The person who had been left or offered up (a reference to sacrifice) in this area happened in the last phase of the construction of this temple. It is approximately 3,000 years old," Reuters quoted Aguilar as saying. "It most probably belongs to the Manchay culture. It is a culture that developed in the valleys of Lima between 1,500 and 1,000 BCE. The statement released by Kyiv came shortly after Moscow-installed governor of Crimea, Sergei Aksionov, said that the Russian forces had downed nine drones over its territory, without causing any casualties.&nbsp;

"Last night and this morning, nine drones were detected above the Republic of Crimea territory," Aksionov said on Telegram.

"Six devices were shot down by air-defence forces" while three others were "deactivated" before hitting the ground, he said, adding that there were no victims.

Nonetheless, one of the drones did explode in a village in the centre of the peninsula&nbsp;that broke the windows of several houses, he added.

As Ukraine pursues a counter-offensive against Russian forces, drone attacks in Crimea have increased. However, the annexation of these drone attacks by Moscow has not yet been recognised by the international community.

Kyiv has repeatedly articulated taking back Crimea as a part of its efforts to regain the territory since Moscow launched its invasion in February 2022.

On Monday, Kyiv claimed that it had taken control of seven villages in eastern and southern Ukraine that were initially occupied by the Russian forces over the last week.

"Seven settlements were liberated," Deputy Defence Minister Ganna Malyar said on Telegram.

These are Lobkovo, Levadne and Novodarivka in the southern Zaporizhzhia region, she said.

According to the authorities, at least 104 people were rescued but it is not yet clear how many people were aboard the vessel when it capsized. The incident is deemed the deadliest in the country this year.

The boat was spotted in international waters late on Tuesday by an aircraft that belonged to the European Union border agency Frontex, around 50 miles (80 km) southwest of the town of Pylos in southern Greece, said the coast guard. The boat was en route to Italy.

It further said that the ones aboard the boat had denied assistance offered by Greek authorities late on Tuesday. A few hours later, the boat sank which prompted a search and rescue operation.

It later said that none of the people aboard the boat were wearing life jackets, and also did not disclose their nationalities immediately.

According to the state broadcaster ERT, it had sailed from the Libyan town of Tobruk. It further said that most of the people on board were young men in their 20s.&nbsp;

The survivors were taken to the town of Kalamata, said the authorities.

"Since very early Wednesday, an extensive rescue operation is underway off Pylos, after a fishing boat capsized with a large number of migrants onboard," the coast guard said.

According to an official, the migration ministry would begin looking for accommodation for the ones rescued after they are processed by the coast guard to determine gender and nationality.

Greece's port police said that on Wednesday, a sailing boat in distress off Crete with about 80 migrants on board was rescued by a coastguard patrol and towed to port.

The police have not yet revealed the name of the man arrested and have also not commented on his background.

Braverman assured that anti-terrorism police were helping Nottinghamshire police in the investigation, "though this does not mean that it is currently being treated as a terrorist attack".

Two students, aged 19 and a 65-year-old man were stabbed to death. The police believe that the suspect stole&nbsp;the van of the older victim and then rammed it into three other people, injuring one critically.
