In another migrant shipwreck incident, around 40 people are missing after their boat capsized off the Italian island of Lampedusa, the UN said on Friday.

The United Nations agency released a statement saying that the survivors, who were from sub-Saharan Africa, arrived in Lampedusa on Thursday after they were rescued from the shipwreck by another vessel.

As per the news agency AFP, UNHCR representative to Italy, Chiara Cardoletti, said that at least one newborn baby was among those missing in the incident.

The vessel, which departed from Sfax in Tunisia for Italy, had 46 migrants on board, said Flavio Di Giacomo, a spokesman for the UN migration agency IOM.

He said that the boat capsized due to high waves and strong winds.

"Some survivors were taken to Lampedusa and others were brought back to Tunisia," he said.

"Among those missing were seven women and a minor. The survivors are all adult men,"&nbsp;he added.&nbsp;

"We have noticed more arrivals of migrants from sub-Saharan Africa than Tunisians&nbsp;via the Tunisian route since November," he said.

He explained this was due to people from sub-Saharan Africa fleeing discrimination in Tunisia.

"It is unacceptable to continue counting the dead at the gates of Europe,"&nbsp;Cardoletti said.

Tunisia, whose coast lies just 150 kilometres (90 miles) from the Italian island of Lampedusa, has long been a transit for people fleeing war and poverty elsewhere in Africa, often on boats.

Tunisia reportedly hosts around 21,000 undocumented migrants from other parts of Africa, less than 0.2 per cent of the population.

Rome said in February that more than 32,000 migrants, including 18,000 Tunisians, reached Italy from Tunisia last year, while thousands more have departed from neighbouring Libya.

US Coast Guard Rear Admiral John Mauger said that he can't confirm whether the US Coast Guard will be able to recover the bodies of the five passengers, who were the company's CEO Stockton Rush, Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood, Hamish Harding, and Paul-Henri Nargeolet.&nbsp;

According to the officials, five major pieces were detected amid the debris around the Titanic site. A nose cone, outside the pressure hull, and a larger debris field were among them.&nbsp;

"This is an incredibly unforgiving environment," Mauger added, further mentioning that a few hours ago, an ROV from the vessel Horizon Artic found the tail cone of the Titan submersible approximately 1600ft from the bow of the Titanic wreck.&nbsp;

The families of those on board were notified when they found additional debris, which according to the report was consistent with a catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber. &nbsp;

Mauger stated that the US Coast Guard will keep working near the site to gather more information. He added that it's an "incredibly complex environment" on the sea floor, two miles beneath the surface.&nbsp;

Qatar on Tuesday (June 20) inked a second 27-year gas supply deal with a Chinese state-controlled firm in less than a year. The move is in line with Qatar's efforts to expand production from the world's biggest natural gas field.

China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and QatarEnergy signed the agreement, under which China will buy 4 million metric tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) a year from the Gulf Arab state.

QatarEnergy chief Saad al-Kaabi said that CNPC will also take an equity stake in the eastern expansion of Qatar's North Field LNG project.

"Qatar will supply four million tonnes annually of natural gas from the North Field East Expansion Project to China over a period of 27 years," Qatar's Energy Minister Saad Sherida al-Kaabi told a signing ceremony in Doha.&nbsp;

"This will become the second LNG (liquefied natural gas) sale and purchase agreement to China within the North Field East Expansion Project," added al-Kaabi, who is also head of state firm QatarEnergy.

CNPC chairman Dai Houliang released a statement saying that the deal will establish a strong foundation for energy cooperation between both sides.

"It lays a solid foundation for the energy cooperation between the two sides in the next three decades," CNPC chairman Dai Houliang said in a statement.

"CNPC will continue to actively discuss with QatarEnergy all-round cooperation across the hydrocarbon industry chain and other areas like green and low carbon energies," he added.

Earlier, QatarEnergy signed a 15-year supply deal with Bangladeshi state company Petrobangla and last month a $10 billion contract was awarded to France's Technip Energies and Consolidated Contractors Company for the engineering, procurement and construction of the North Field South project.

"This type of long-term, large volume deal is exactly what QatarEnergy wants," said Ben Cahill, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

"QatarEnergy probably has more than 60 million tons (tonnes) per year in uncontracted LNG capacity... So as big as this deal is, Qatar needs to stack up a lot of these."

According to Justin Alexander, director of the Khalij Economics consulting firm: "The solid and long-term demand from Asia may spur European buyers to advance negotiations to ensure the security of supply."

In line with China's plan to regulate the fast-evolving deep fake technology, the internet regulator in the country has released its first line of approved suppliers.

As per the South China Morning Post report, the white list, that was released by the Cyber Administration of China (CAC) on Tuesday, included names of the owners of 41 algorithms, including major tech giants Tencent, Baidu and Alibaba.

The algorithms were filed in adherence to the Administrative Provisions on Deep Synthesis for Internet Information Service, which came into effect in the month of January this year.

The Administrative Provisions on Deep Synthesis for Internet Information Service took effect on January 10. It controls deepfake technology and services including video, audio, text and images generated by artificial intelligence-based models.

As per the law, deep synthesis providers have to abide by the local laws and respect ethics, and maintain the “correct political direction and correct public opinion orientation”.

The regulation by CAC also urged deep fake providers to register as early as possible.

As per the list, the organisations that have already filed are in the business of generating images from text, editing images/videos from the ones uploaded by clients and intelligent customer service.&nbsp;

Iceland's government said Tuesday it was suspending this year's whale hunt until the end of August due to animal welfare concerns, and in all likelihood&nbsp;bringing the controversial practice to a historic end.

Animal rights groups and environmentalists hailed the decision, with the Humane Society International calling it "a major milestone in compassionate whale conservation".

"I have taken the decision to suspend whaling&nbsp;until August 31," Food Minister Svandis Svavarsdottir said in a statement, after a government-commissioned report concluded the hunt does not comply with Iceland's Animal Welfare Act.

Recent monitoring by Iceland's Food and Veterinary Authority found that the killing of the animals took too long.

Shocking video clips broadcast by the veterinary authority showed a whale's agony as it was hunted for five hours.&nbsp;

"If the government and licensees cannot guarantee welfare requirements, these activities do not have a future," the minister said.

The country has only one remaining whaling company, Hvalur, and its licence to hunt fin whales expires in 2023.

Another company hung up its harpoons for good in 2020, saying it was no longer profitable.

Iceland's whaling season runs from mid-June to mid-September, and it is doubtful Hvalur would head out to sea that late in the season.

Annual quotas authorise the killing of 209 fin whales -- the second-longest marine mammal after the blue whale -- and 217 minke whales, one of the smallest species.

But catches have fallen drastically in recent years due to a dwindling market for whale meat.

<h2>'Can't be done humanely'</h2>

Iceland, Norway and Japan are the only countries in the world that have continued whale hunting in the face of fierce criticism from environmentalists and animal rights' defenders.

"There is no humane way to kill a whale at sea, and so we urge the minister to make this a permanent ban," the Humane Society International's executive director for Europe, Ruud Tombrock, said.

"Whales already face so many serious threats in the oceans from pollution, climate change, entanglement in fish nets and ship strikes, that ending cruel commercial whaling is the only ethical conclusion."

Robert Read, head of Sea Shepherd UK, said the decision was also "a huge blow" to other whaling nations.

"If whaling can't be done humanely here... it can't be done humanely anywhere."&nbsp;

"Whales are architects for the ocean. They help boost biodiversity, they help fight climate change by affecting the carbon cycling process," he added.

Opposition to whaling has been on the rise in Iceland with a majority now in favour of dropping the practice.

A survey published in early June indicated that 51 percent of Icelanders were opposed to the hunt and 29 percent in favour, with over-60s those most in favour.

Iceland suspends whale hunting on animal welfare concerns after video shows five-hour agony

An analysis by University of Bristol and the University of Uppsala scientists showed that the extinct species of kangaroos did not hop around with its hind legs, rather used alternate methods for their commute such as walking on two or all four legs.

The researchers used fossil evidence and a new analysis of shin and ankle bone data to unveil the mystery behind the evolution of the species and how macropodoids moved around over the past 25 million years.

According to the review published by the team of scientists, the hop of famous Qantas Airlines 'flying kangaroo' that "many people regard as the pinnacle of kangaroo evolution", represents one of the many alternate ways these animals evolved to be successful in distinctive habitats.

"In fact, modern large hopping kangaroos are the exception in kangaroo evolution," says vertebrate paleontologist Christine Janis from the University of Bristol, lead author of the study.

"Large kangaroos were much more diverse as recently as 50 thousand years ago, which may also mean that the habitat in Australia then was rather different from today."

The earliest recognized late Oligocene–middle Miocene, basal types of kangaroos, known to be existing 25 to 15 million years ago, most likely used quadrupedal bounding, climbing and slower speed hopping as their primary modes of locomotion.&nbsp;

The scientists examined the weight-bearing shin bones (tibia) and heel bones (calcaneus) of kangaroos to demonstrate how the hop traits transformed over time.

The research showed that the modern kangaroos' hopping was either rare or absent in all but a few lineages.

Early macropodoids, lived nearly 25–50 million years ago and were small and could bound, climb, and hop to some capacity.

"We want people to appreciate that large kangaroos were much more diverse as recently as 50,000 years ago, which may also mean that the habitat in Australia then was rather different from today. In fact, modern large hopping kangaroos are the exception in kangaroo evolution," Phys.org quoted lead author, Professor Christine Janis, from Bristol's School of Earth Sciences as saying.

Co-author Adrian O'Driscoll, a former Master's student in the Palaeobiology program at Bristol and now a Ph.D. student at the University of York said, "Especially supported by this new data is the notion of bipedal striding rather than hopping in the sthenurines, as their calcanea lack the anatomy (a long calcaneal heel) that would help resist rotational forces at the ankle experienced during hopping, and suggests a more-erect limb posture rather than the crouched posture essential for hopping."

Professor Janis concluded, "The assumption that increasing continent-wide aridity after the end of the Miocene selectively favoured hopping kangaroos is overly simplistic. Hopping is only one of many gait modes employed by kangaroos both in the past and today, and the fast endurance hopping of modern kangaroos should not be regarded as some 'evolutionary pinnacle."

"What makes modern endurance-hopping kangaroos appear so unusual is the geologically recent extinction of similar animals who moved in different ways. We are perhaps then in need of a rival Australian airline that covers shorter distances than QANTAS and boasts a novel motif of a striding sthenurine."

According to the review published by the team of scientists, the hop of famous Qantas Airlines 'flying kangaroo' that "many people regard as the pinnacle of kangaroo evolution", represents one of the many alternate ways these animals evolved to be successful in distinctive habitats. "In fact, modern large hopping kangaroos are the exception in kangaroo evolution," says vertebrate paleontologist Christine Janis from the University of Bristol, lead author of the study. "Large kangaroos were much more diverse as recently as 50 thousand years ago, which may also mean that the habitat in Australia then was rather different from today." The earliest recognized late Oligocene–middle Miocene, basal types of kangaroos, known to be existing 25 to 15 million years ago, most likely used quadrupedal bounding, climbing and slower speed hopping as their primary modes of locomotion. The scientists examined the weight-bearing shin bones (tibia) and heel bones (calcaneus) of kangaroos to demonstrate how the hop traits transformed over time. The research showed that the modern kangaroos' hopping was either rare or absent in all but a few lineages. Early macropodoids, lived nearly 25–50 million years ago and were small and could bound, climb, and hop to some capacity. "We want people to appreciate that large kangaroos were much more diverse as recently as 50,000 years ago, which may also mean that the habitat in Australia then was rather different from today. In fact, modern large hopping kangaroos are the exception in kangaroo evolution," Phys.org quoted lead author, Professor Christine Janis, from Bristol's School of Earth Sciences as saying. Co-author Adrian O'Driscoll, a former Master's student in the Palaeobiology program at Bristol and now a Ph.D. student at the University of York said, "Especially supported by this new data is the notion of bipedal striding rather than hopping in the sthenurines, as their calcanea lack the anatomy (a long calcaneal heel) that would help resist rotational forces at the ankle experienced during hopping, and suggests a more-erect limb posture rather than the crouched posture essential for hopping." Professor Janis concluded, "The assumption that increasing continent-wide aridity after the end of the Miocene selectively favoured hopping kangaroos is overly simplistic. Hopping is only one of many gait modes employed by kangaroos both in the past and today, and the fast endurance hopping of modern kangaroos should not be regarded as some 'evolutionary pinnacle." "What makes modern endurance-hopping kangaroos appear so unusual is the geologically recent extinction of similar animals who moved in different ways. As per the dynamic approval rating graph of online polling company Civiqs, DeSantis has a net approval rating of negative 19 points at present as, nearly 55 per cent of defendants disapprove of him, while 36 per cent support him.

The data unveiled that the Republican has an unfavourable rating from people in the age group of 18-34 (63 per cent), women (62 per cent), as well as African Americans (85 per cent), and the Hispanic/Latino population (68 per cent), as per Newsweek reports.

As per a Quinnipiac University poll, Biden is now leading Trump by four points.&nbsp;

“In a hypothetical general election matchup, President Joe Biden has a slight lead over Trump 48 - 44 per cent among all registered voters. Today's results continue a string of close head-to-head results between Biden and Trump since Quinnipiac University started asking this question in February 2023,” the website for Quinnipiac University poll said.

Quinnipiac analyst Tim Malloy said, “A federal indictment. A court date on a litany of charges. A blizzard of critical media coverage. The negative impact on the former President’s standing with voters? Not much at all.”

At one time, he was one of Trump's ardent followers, having been one of the founding leaders of the Freedom Caucus. United States President Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden agreed to plead guilty to two counts of failure to pay federal income tax on Tuesday.&nbsp;

He also admitted to possessing a gun illegally, said the prosecutors.

In a plea agreement with the US Attorney's Office in his home state of Delaware, Hunter Biden accepted owning a firearm in spite of being a drug user.

The agreement between the 53-year-old Biden and US prosecutors will still need to be approved by a federal judge.

<h2>Joe Biden expresses 'love and support' for son</h2>

Biden expressed love and support for his son after he pleaded guilty to tax crimes.

In a statement released by the White House, the POTUS and the First Lady said that they love and support their son and will have no further comment over this.

"The President and First Lady love their son and support him as he continues to rebuild his life. We will have no further comment," the White House said in a statement.

United States Attorney David Weiss said Hunter Biden had agreed to plead guilty to "two counts of willful failure to pay federal income tax".

As per the charges, Hunter did not file his tax returns on time, for the years 2017 and 2018, on earnings of more than $1.5 million.&nbsp;

In both years, he owed more than $100,000 in taxes on those earnings, as per news agency AFP.

Each count brings up to 12 months in prison and a fine of up to $100,000 or double.

Weiss said Hunter Biden was also facing one count of "possession of a firearm by a person who is an unlawful user of or addicted to a controlled substance."

Hunter has also accepted that he used to struggle with drugs in the past.

He will not be indicted on the gun charge but will enter what is known as "pretrial diversion," which often involves counselling or rehabilitation.

Christopher Clark, Hunter Biden's lawyer, in a statement to US media, said "Hunter will take responsibility for two instances of misdemeanour failure to file tax payments."

"I know Hunter believes it is important to take responsibility for these mistakes he made during a period of turmoil and addiction in his life," Clark said. "He looks forward to continuing his recovery and moving forward."

Hunter Biden has been facing the wrath of the investigation since 2018, and later again in 2022.
