Jammu and Kashmir has been witnessing a sharp rise in the COVID-19 cases as 165 new cases have been reported in the last 24 hours, while three succumbed to the deadly virus.

Kashmir division has reported 147 cases, while Jammu had 18 new cases.&nbsp;Notably, this is the highest number of infections that have been recorded in the last six weeks.

Srinagar is emerging as one of the hotspots for the Covid spread, as about 554 out of 968 active cases (that is 57 per cent) have been reported so far.

“We have taken a lot of containment measures. We have created micro containment zones. There are five wards which&nbsp;are under corona curfew, these are: Lal Bazaar, Hyderpora, Chanapora, and Bemina. We have&nbsp;also mobilised our health staff for screen testing. We have also upped the speed of the vaccination drive in the region,” said Ajaz Asad, District Collector, Srinagar.&nbsp;

The medical staff fear that a further spike in the COVID cases could be expected as a huge influx of tourists is being witnessed in the state. They say that the current scale of testing capacity needs to be upgraded to test more tourists.

“'There is a standard protocol for any tourist visiting the valley. At the airport, either you require an RT-PCR test or on the spot the Rapid Antigen Test. I feel there is a good influx of tourists at the moment as all the hotels are booked, that’s why we want to control the Covid cases at the beginning. We are taking all the measures to curb the spread&nbsp;of infection. We overcame the first and second wave with the support of people, and we can again if people adhere to the Covid protocols,” Asad said.&nbsp;

The Jammu Kashmir Administration is currently doing more than 50,000 tests across the Union Territory daily.

The government also inaugurated a laser show at Dal Lake. A gallery displaying old testimonials, periodicals and photographs depicting old pictures of houseboats in river Jhelum and Dal Lake, Kashmiri Culture and traditional cuisine were also put up for the locals and tourists. A fleet of shikaras and houseboats were kept available for tourists to join the celebrations and witness laser shows and films.&nbsp;

"I am feeling great. It's India's first floating cinema and It's a beautiful experience. We are enjoying it a lot. Srinagar is a must-visit place to come. We should recommend this to everyone and no one should be afraid to come here," said Aakshama, a tourist.&nbsp;

“On this historic occasion, on 75 years of Budgam landing, in which after the Instrument of Accession was signed, we moved in quickly our troops. Srinagar airfield was saved and thereafter we could launch a further offensive and push the Pakistan military, which came as kabailis, further back,” Air Marshal Amit Dev said.

“I am sure, if the UN had not intervened, perhaps the entire Kashmir would have been ours. It was not only IAF and Army's participation in Budgam but there have been many small missions that have resulted in ensuring the freedom of free Kashmir. I'm sure someday PoK (Pakistan occupied Kashmir) will join this part of Kashmir and we'll have whole Kashmir in years to come,” he added.

The replication of the historic event was organised at Old Air Field to pay tribute to the soldiers and people of Jammu &amp; Kashmir who laid down their lives, and also to honour the next of kin of war heroes who participated in the 1947-48 War.&nbsp;

The event was attended by Jammu &amp; Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Air Marshal Amit Dev, Air Officer Commanding-In-Chief, Western Air Command, Lieutenant General Devendra Pratap Pandey, General Officer Commanding 15 Corps along with several other civil and military dignitaries.&nbsp;

“The first Sikh, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Dewan Ranjit Rai, who later laid down his life at Baramulla, changed the course of the war, wherein people and soldiers of Jammu &amp; Kashmir and the Indian Army fought valiantly alongside to evict Pakistani Forces, driving them out of most of Jammu &amp; Kashmir till ceasefire on 05 January 1949,'' said the Indian Army.&nbsp;

The security forces in Kashmir will put an "aerial surveillance cover" over the areas where the minority community lives. There would be a cover over Srinagar’s main city centre Lal Chowk too. "In a high level meeting with&nbsp;the&nbsp;top officials of security agencies, we have decided that minority areas need to be more protected. The idea was given by&nbsp;DG JK police that we should have drone grid over these areas. We have identified around 15 areas in Srinagar which will be under the aerial surveillance from now on," said Mathev A John, Deputy Inspector General of CRPF (operations).

The city would have round-the-clock checkpoints&nbsp;in place jointly by the police and CRPF to keep a close watch on the suspects. The vigil will remain in place even after the visit of the Home Minister.&nbsp;

One of the slain militants has been identified as Umar Khanday of LeT and the other has been identified as Muhammad Sultan, who was the LeT commander .”

Police said that Umar Khanday was involved in the killing of two policemen in the Baghat area of Srinagar. Security is still on high alert across the Kashmir Valley.&nbsp;

The grand mufti of Jammu and Kashmir visited the families and also assured them on behalf of the majority community that they should feel safe and nothing will hamper the social fabric of Kashmir valley. The grand mufti also demanded quick investigation in these cases, so that the culprits are put behind the bars and the real motive is unearthed.&nbsp;

''I went to see the families, I gave them assurance that I represent 1.5 crore Muslims of Jammu Kashmir and we want them to stay here and feel safe. I think a full investigation should be done in these cases. The culprits need to be arrested and we would know the motive of these killings. Islam doesnt allow killing of anyone,'' said Mufti Nasir Ul Islam, Grand Mufti.&nbsp;

The minority community has appreciated the efforts that are made by the majority community. Around 10 mosques in the Srinagar city have made announcements after the prayers assuring the minority community to feel safe. The minority community now wants them to make these announcements after the Friday prayers as well. The Kashmir Pandit Sajay Tickoo said that this time no migration has taken place and whoever has left will be coming back soon.&nbsp;

"It's a welcome statement and I have made an appeal to all masjid committees too.&nbsp;It should be announced in every mosque in the valley so that it will reach the larger masses. So far, nine mosques in the city have announced these assurances to minorities in the vicinity. It has opened the space for the minorities to be less afraid. It's a good step. My appeal is to the grand mufti that on Friday, they must announce in mosques through loudspeakers to make minorities feel safe. It will ease our tension. After these announcements were made, I feel better and safer.'' said Sanjay Tickoo, Kashmir Pandit Leader.&nbsp;

"Majority community came forward at the time of Chittisinghpura. We have strong brotherhood with the majority community but people across the border don't want that. Muslims have been coming to Supinder Kaur's house since. The locals here are not communal at all. We will all fight it together. I got a number of calls from the majority community and I got a call from Mirwaiz Umar Farooq as well as Mufti Nasir and the Chamber of commerce," said Jagmohan Raina,Sikh Leader, APNI Party.&nbsp;

"Part time or hybrid terrorists"&nbsp;are not listed with the security forces as ultras but are people who are radicalised enough to carry terror attacks and then slip back into routine life.&nbsp;

In the last two weeks, seven civilians were killed and most of them were shot by pistol-borne youth who are not listed with the security forces.&nbsp;

"Hybrid terrorists or part time terrorists are those who are not listed with us but are in touch with militants, they are locally trained and after taking out one or two attacks, they slip back into normal life. 97 pistols have been recovered so far this year. This shows Pakistan has a new agenda that maximum number of pistols and hand grenades be pumped. The main reason is to create an atmosphere of fear," said Vijay Kumar, IG Kashmir.&nbsp;

Most of the killings that have taken place this year in the Kashmir valley were done using pistols. Many of these attacks were carried out by these "part time or hybrid terrorists".&nbsp;

Police are now trying to break the chain of these attacks. More than 500 people have been detained by the Jammu Kashmir Police in the last few days after the rise of civilian killings.&nbsp;

"There is a new modus operandi of terrorists to kill innocent civilians using pistols. All the policemen who have been killed this year were all without weapons at the time of killing, and most of the attacks were carried out by pistols. It's very easy to carry and attack with a pistol. Pakistan has chosen a new modus operandi to let them use pistols," Kumar added.

The security forces are now trying to formulate a new strategy to break through the new modus operandi of the terror groups.&nbsp;
