Morning news brief: Russia-Ukraine war updates, Biden condemns Texas mall shooting, and more

Lithium reserves have been traced in India's Rajasthan, raising hopes of reduced dependence on China, according to a report by the news agency IANS on Sunday (May 7). "If officials in Rajasthan government are to be believed, lithium reserves have been traced in Degana (Nagaur) of Rajasthan," the report said. The Geological Survey of India (GSI) and mining officials claimed the capacity of lithium reserves found in Rajasthan is higher than that found in Jammu and Kashmir recently.

"It is claimed that there is so much lithium here that 80 per cent of India`s total demand can be met from here," Sunday's report said. On the instructions of the Central

Government, the GSI survey team reached Degana to find high-grade tungsten minerals. While the team found deposits of Tungsten, it also found the availability of lithium reserves in this area. And officials confirmed this development.

The lithium reserves in Rajasthan have been found in the same Renvat hill of Degana and its surrounding area, from where tungsten mineral was once supplied to the country.

IANS reported that there is a possibility of f lithium deposits in some other places in the state including Barmer, and Jaisalmer. Officials, meanwhile, said the survey team is expediting the exploration work of lithium.

Lithium is a non-ferrous metal and its most important use is in rechargeable batteries for mobile phones, laptops, digital cameras and electric vehicles (EVs).

India is completely dependent on expensive foreign supplies of lithium. IANS reported that the world's largest lithium reserves of 21 million tonnes are in Bolivia. There are also large reserves of the metal in Argentina, Chile and America. However, China, which has reserves of 5.1 million tonnes of lithium, continues to have a monopoly in the international market.

India has to buy 53.76 per cent of its total lithium imports from China. In the year 2020-21, India imported lithium worth more than Rs 6,000 crore and out of this lithium worth more than Rs 3,500 crore was bought from China.

Lithium reserves traced in Rajasthan, raise hopes of reduced dependence on China: Report

Former United States President Donald Trump will not testify at a civil trial in which columnist E.Jean Carroll alleged that he raped her and later defamed her, after letting a Sunday (May 7) deadline pass without asking the court to appear. Trump, 76, was given until 5 pm Sunday by US District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan to file a request to testify. Nothing was filed.

Earlier, Trump's attorney Joseph Tacopina told the judge last Thursday that he waived his right to testify in the trial in Manhattan federal court and opted not to present a defence in the case, gambling that jurors would find that Carroll failed to make a persuasive case, the news agency Reuters reported.

Speaking to Reuters, Tacopina said that the former US president would not testify in the case. Also on Thursday, District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan gave Trump extra time to change his mind and requested to testify. However, Kaplan did not promise to grant such a request to reopen the defence case so that Trump could take the stand.

Trump, a Republican candidate for the 2024 US presidential election, criticised Kaplan, a Bill Clinton appointee, as an “extremely hostile” and “rough judge” who “doesn’t like me very much,” the news agency Associated Press reported.

Jean Carroll, 79, filed a lawsuit last year against Trump claiming that he raped her dressing room at the Bergdorf Goodman department store in Manhattan in 1996 and then defamed her by denying it happened.

Trump meanwhile, said in his deposition that the columnist made it up. Trump called it “a false, disgusting lie” delivered by a “nut job” who was trying to stoke sales of her book. The former president also repeated comments in his statement that she was not his type. "If it did happen, it would have been reported within minutes," Trump also said in the deposition.

Eight killed, several wounded in Texas mall shooting

Many Thai citizens lined up early Sunday (May 7) to vote in the parliamentary election that will be held on May 14. Over two million citizens across Thailand registered for early voting out of 52 million eligible voters who are aged 18 and above, the news agency Reuters reported citing the national election commission. The May 14 election is becoming a clash between army-backed establishment parties and resurgent opposition movements. This election is for the 500-seat House of Representatives.

Speaking to Reuters, Gosol Pungtaku, a Bangkok resident who registered for one-day-only early voting in the capital said, “As I am eligible to vote, I wish to see change and an improvement in management. There has been a rise in drug-related and criminal incidents, so I hope that the newly elected government will take steps to prevent them.”

Another voter, Siriporn Namphet, said she voted for change. “I would like to witness a new perspective and a change in Thailand. It's like having seen what the previous government has done and now hoping for a new administration to take over and govern more effectively,” Namphet added.

Twenty-two-year-old Thanakron Puttipattanamongko, a first-time voter, told Reuters, "I am filled with excitement and curiosity about what the future of Thailand holds. As a first-time voter, I am eager to exercise my right to vote.”

An additional 100,000 Thais living overseas will also vote early, with some having already done so, according to a report by the news agency AFP.

Sunday's poll will close at 5 pm (1000 GMT) with alcohol sales across Thailand banned until 6 pm. A day back, police told local media that around 3,000 security officers deployed across Bangkok, and warned residents to expect heavier traffic congestion around poll sites.

The May 14 election could upset the status quo after more than eight years of a conservative pro-military government led by former army chief Prayut Chan-o-cha.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, who came into power in a 2014 coup before cementing control in a controversial 2019 election, has been languishing in opinion polls with voters favouring the opposition party Pheu Thai and the Forward Party.

But with an electoral system heavily stacked in favour of the army-backed parties, challengers must achieve a landslide victory to have any hope of forming the next government in Thailand.

Thailand: Voters cast ballots a week before parliamentary election

The British police on Saturday (May 6) arrested 52 people including Graham Smith, the leader of the anti-monarchy group Republic at King Charles III's coronation, according to a report by the news agency Reuters early Sunday. On Saturday, hundreds of yellow-clad demonstrators gathered among the crowds lining the procession route in central London to hold up signs saying "Not My King".

Republic said that its leader Smith was detained before the procession began and images circulated on social media showing police officers seizing demonstrators' placards.

The anti-monarchy group had vowed to mount the biggest protest against a British monarch in modern history and protesters booed as King Charles and Queen Camilla made their way to Westminster Abbey.

In a statement, Commander Karen Findlay of the London Metropolitan Police said, "We absolutely understand public concern following the arrests we made this morning. Over the past 24 hours there has been a significant police operation after we received information protesters were determined to disrupt the Coronation procession."

The police did not confirm Graham Smith's arrest and said they took action as they believed protesters would seek to deface public monuments with paint and disrupt "official movements". "All of these people remain in custody," Commander Findlay said on Saturday.

In a separate statement, police said that three people were arrested earlier on Saturday based on intelligence that protesters were planning to throw rape alarms at the procession which could have scared the horses involved (in the procession) and thereby caused a risk to public safety.

Even though protesters were very less compared to the tens of thousands of people gathered on Saturday to support King Charles III, polls suggested support for the monarchy was declining and was weakest among young people.

A poll by YouGov in April found 64% of people in Britain said they had little or no interest in the coronation. Reuters reported that in London, protesters demanded an elected head of state, saying that the royal family had no place in a modern constitutional democracy and was staggeringly expensive.

Since Charles became King in September after the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth, there have been protests at royal events. Following the queen's death, a debate reignited in Australia, Jamaica and other parts of the Commonwealth over the need to retain Charles as their head of state.

King Charles III coronation: Cops arrest 52 including anti-monarchist group leader

Foreign ministers of Arab countries will on Sunday (May 7) agree on Syria's conditional return to the Arab League, the Arab News reported citing a statement. The Arab League drafted a resolution that said that Syrian delegations would resume participation in the league's meetings as of Sunday. The foreign ministers met in Egypt's capital city Cairo for meetings on Syria as well as the situation in conflict-torn Sudan.

The decision on Syria's condition return to the Arab League comes as some Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia and Egypt, opened up relations with Syrian President Bashar Assad and their foreign ministers visited Damascus in recent weeks. Last month, Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad visited Cairo and Riyad, the first such visits in more than a decade.

Syria's membership in the Arab League was suspended in 2011 after a bloody crackdown on protests against Bashar Assad led to a civil war. Arab countries later imposed economic sanctions on Syria. In November 2011, 18 of the 22 members of the league backed the suspension (of Syria's membership). Lebanon, Yemen, and Syria voted against the decision, while Iraq abstained.

However, several Arab countries have re-engaged with Syria recently.

On Friday (May 5), Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said that Syria had enough votes among the Arab League's 22 members to regain its seat. "The return to the league will happen. Symbolically it will be important but ... that is only a very humble beginning of what will be a very long and difficult and challenging process, given the complexity of the crisis after 12 years of conflict," Safadi told CNN.

Safadi's remarks come after foreign ministers of Syria, Egypt, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Jordan met in the Jordanian capital Amman on Monday (May 1) to discuss how to normalize ties with Syria as part of a political settlement of its war, the news agency Reuters reported.

Jordan has called on Syria to engage with Arab states jointly on a step-by-step roadmap to end the conflict, tackling the issues of refugees, detainees, drug smuggling, and Iran-backed militias in Syria

During the meeting on Monday, Syria agreed to help end drug trafficking across its borders with Jordan and Iraq.

Life started returning to normalcy in violence-hit Manipur on Sunday (May 7) as curfew was relaxed in parts of the state. According to a report by the news agency PTI, people were seen coming out in large numbers to buy food, medicines and other essential commodities during the curfew relaxation period from 7 am to 10 am in riot-affected Churachandpur town.

Churachandpur, where violence was first reported on Wednesday (May 3), saw a relaxation in curfew on Saturday as well from 3 pm to 5 pm

"Ray of hope due to efforts of 120-125 Army and Assam Rifles columns who are working tirelessly for the past 96 hours to rescue civilians across all communities, curb violence and restore normalcy has emerged with no major violence being reported and curfew, therefore being relaxed from 7-10 am today in Churachandpur followed by flag march by security forces immediately thereafter," an official statement on Sunday read.

The statement added that the last 24 hours saw the army significantly enhancing surveillance efforts through aerial surveillance, movement of UAVs, and redeployment of army helicopters within Imphal Valley. The statement further said that 23,000 civilians had been rescued so far.

The violence in Manipur started on Wednesday in Churachandpur's Torbung area where the All Tribal Students Union Manipur (ATSUM) took out the 'Tribal Solidarity March' to protest the demand for Meiteis for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur's population and live mostly in the Imphal valley. Tribals -- Nagas and Kukis -- constitute another 40 per cent of the population and live mostly in the hill districts.

The 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised by tribals -- including Nagas and Kukis -- after the Manipur High Court asked the state government last month to send a recommendation to the Centre within four weeks on the demand for ST status by the Meitei community.

During the march in Torbung, an armed mob allegedly attacked people of the Meitei community, leading to retaliatory attacks in the valley districts, which escalated the violence throughout the state, police said. Over 50 people have died in the violence.
