A 79-year-old man from California's San Bernardino was beaten to death while delivering donations to the poor in Mexico's Tijuana, according to authorities and the man's family. Rudy Lazo was killed during an apparent robbery in mid-April. His body was discovered on April 19. According to a report carried by NBC last Saturday (April 29), Lazo's son and daughter said their father would often make trips from his home in San Bernardino to deliver toys and necessities to families in Tijuana.

Rudy's son Juan Carlos said that his father was a very generous person and helped anyone out. Carlos travelled to Mexico to find Rudy's body. He believed that his father was killed during a robbery.

"He didn’t deserve it. Actually no, no human being deserves this," Carlos said.

The NBC report said that Rudy's truck and personal items were never found and his family pointed out that Mexican authorities made no arrests.

His daughter Claudia Hernandez said that the situation in Tijuana is very dangerous. "So dangerous and he probably thought he wasn’t going to have problems because he is a senior citizen," Hernandez added.

Rudy Lazo immigrated to the US from El Salvador in the 1980s and was working as a truck driver. Lazo's family said he had a big heart and a desire to give to those in need. The 79-year-old even had plans to build a community centre in Tijuana.

His killing comes months after the US State Department warned American citizens to avoid travelling to parts of Mexico over fears of kidnapping and other crimes across multiple states.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, US and Mexican officials agreed on new immigration policies meant to deter illegal border crossings while also opening up other pathways ahead of an expected increase in migrants after the end of Covid restrictions next week.

As per the agreement, Mexico would continue to accept migrants from Venezuela, Haiti, Cuba and Nicaragua who have been turned away at the border, and up to 100,000 individuals from Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador who have family in the US would be eligible to live and work there.

A street piano in Japan's Kakogawa city has been confiscated after authorities said that people were displaying poor manners while playing it, according to a report by the BBC early Tuesday (May 2). The report said that the Kakogawa City Council had placed this piano inside the area's main railway station in November last year, and authorities hoped that residents would respond to a global trend which saw a huge rise in street pianos.

However, authorities were disappointed by the rule-breaking, such as people playing the piano too often, too loudly and without any respect for manners.

BBC reported that some directives were laid out for the piano's use. Authorities insisted that users should disinfect their hands before playing the piano, performances should be kept to 10 minutes and people should avoid voice accompaniment.

Some budding musicians have been accused of practising the same sounds over and over again, while others provoked complaints by continuing to play during station announcements, the report added.

Authorities added that warnings were issued, but there was no improvement. They also said the piano might be placed in a different location, away from the station loudspeakers.

Kakogawa has been inspired by the public art movement of placing instruments in shared places, such as transport hubs and shopping centres.

But the city council was disappointed by the disregard for rules.

Many commuters (at the railway station) were unhappy with the confiscation of the piano. “I have an electronic piano at home, so I like to practise here,” an unidentified man in his 60s said and pointed out that most people observed the rules, as per the report.

On the other hand, another person was happy with the city council's decision. “I’ve seen people who kept playing the same song and yelling along for about an hour, and everyone who was walking had a disgusted look on their faces,” the person said.

Street piano in Japan confiscated after people break rules: Reports

Authorities in the US state of Oklahoma found the bodies of seven people on Monday (May 1) while searching a property in rural Oklahoma for two missing teenagers. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokesman Gerald Davidson said that the bodies were found near Henryetta town which is located about 145 kilometres east of Oklahoma City.

Davidson said the state medical examiner would have to identify the victims and authorities were no longer searching for the missing teenagers -- 14-year-old Ivy Webster and 16-year-old Brittany Brewer, or the man they were travelling with. The man, Jesse McFadden, was on the state’s sex offender registry.

Speaking to reporters, Okmulgee County Sheriff Eddy Rice said, “We’ve had our share of troubles and woes, but this one is pretty bad." Rice declined to confirm the identities of the seven bodies, where they were found or information about weapons that might have been discovered on the property.

The County Sheriff also said that there was no other threat to the community, the Associated Press reported.

Earlier on Monday, a missing endangered person advisory was issued for Ivy Webster and Brittany Brewer. However, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol cancelled the advisory later in the day. The advisory said that Webster and Brewer were reportedly seen travelling with Jesse McFadden.

As per the Oklahoma Department of Corrections prison records, McFadden was convicted of first-degree rape in 2003 and released in October 2020. Court records showed that he was scheduled to appear in court on Monday for the start of a jury trial on charges of soliciting sexual conduct with a minor and possession of child pornography.

Meanwhile, Brittany Brewer's father Nathan told KOTV that one of the seven bodies discovered was his daughter's. “Brittany was an outgoing person. She was actually selected to be Miss Henryetta ... coming up in July for this Miss National Miss pageant in Tulsa. And now she ain’t gonna make it because she’s dead. She’s gone,” Nathan said.

In a separate case last year, the bodies of four men were found in the Deep Fork River in Okmulgee. Joseph Kennedy, 68, is facing four counts of first-degree murder in the case.

It is extremely rare to see the aurora at such a low latitude!" the IIA tweeted. The IIA said that at 11.42 pm on April 21, the sun launched a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) towards the earth. "This CME (speed of 500-600 km/s) was associated with an M1 class solar flare. The CME arrived at Earth late on April 23 at 10 PM," Wageesh Mishra, a professor at the IIA said. #Aurora from #Ladakh! It is extremely rare to see aurora at such a low latitude! @dstindia (1/n) pic.twitter.com/gGbrw86vsb — IIAstrophysics (@IIABengaluru) April 29, 2023 × Mishra said that this geoeffective CME led to an excellent night for auroral activity. He added that the aurora came to "lower-than-usual latitudes" overnight leading to rare sightings from Europe, China and Ladakh in India. "Such a severe geomagnetic storm last occurred in 2015," the professor pointed out. What are Coronal Mass Ejections? According to the US government's Space Weather Prediction Centre, Coronal Mass Ejections, also known as CMEs, are large expulsions of plasma and magnetic field from the Sun’s corona. CMEs can eject billions of tons of coronal material and carry an embedded magnetic field (frozen in flux) that is stronger than the background solar wind Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) strength. The Space Weather Prediction Centre further says that CMEs travel outward from the Sun at speeds ranging from slower than 250 kilometres per second (km/s) to as fast as nearly 3000 kms. "The fastest Earth-directed CMEs can reach our planet in as little as 15-18 hours. Slower CMEs can take several days to arrive. They expand in size as they propagate away from the Sun and larger CMEs can reach a size comprising nearly a quarter of the space between Earth and the Sun by the time it reaches our planet," it adds. They visited at the invitation of museum director Cecilie Hollberg.

Speaking to BBC, Carrasquilla said she was impressed by the gallery. "I think it's beautiful. It looks like a church. The thing that impresses me the most is that this whole gallery was built for him," Carrasquilla said.

"There is nothing wrong with the human body in and of itself. Michelangelo would have done him wrong to sculpt him in any other way. I think it's wonderful," she added.

Meanwhile, Cecilie Hollberg said that hosting Carrasquilla was an immense pleasure, the news agency Associated Press reported on Friday.

“I am happy to be able to welcome her and introduce her to the beauties of our museum, besides showing her the David, a sculpture that, I repeat as I have said, has nothing to do with pornography,″ Hollberg said in a written statement and pointed out that the statue is a masterpiece and represents "a religious symbol of purity and innocence, the victory of good over evil."

Hope Carrasquilla was forced to resign as the principal of Tallahassee Classical School, Florida in March after a parent complained that students of class 6 were exposed to pornography during a lesson on Renaissance art which included the David sculpture.

Other parents complained they weren’t notified in advance that their children would be shown the nude figure during a lesson featuring the Renaissance.

Carrasquilla had said she was saddened that her time at the school had to end in this way.

Florida principal, forced to resign over Michelangelo's ‘David’, visits sculpture

A school principal in Florida has been forced to resign after a parent complained that students of class 6 were exposed to pornography during a lesson on Renaissance art which included Michelangelo’s “David” sculpture. Citing a report from the Tallahassee Democrat, the news agency Associated Press reported on Friday (March 24) that principal Hope Carrasquilla of the Tallahassee Classical School resigned this week after an ultimatum from the school board’s chairman.

Speaking to the Tallahassee Democrat, Carrasquilla said she was saddened that her time at the school had to end this way.

The principal added that one parent complained the material was pornographic and two other parents said they wanted to be notified of the lesson before it was given to their children.

The instruction also included Michelangelo’s “Creation of Adam” painting and Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus.”

The kerfuffle in Florida also prompted users on social media to point out similarities to an episode of popular sitcom "The Simpsons" where characters debate the censorship of the David statue.

The statue's nudity has been a part of a centuries-old debate about art pushing boundaries and the rules of censorship. In the 1500s, metal fig leaves covered the genitals of statues like David when the Roman Catholic Church deemed nudity as immodest and obscene.

In 2016, a controversy erupted when officials erected wooden panels to shield nude statues at Rome’s Capitoline Museums during a visit by then-Iranian president Hassan Rouhani. Italy's then culture minister Dario Franceschini criticised the decision to cover up the statues by saying that neither he nor then prime minister Matteo Renzi were informed about it.

Rouhani, meanwhile, thanked Italians as being "very hospitable people” when asked about the gesture.

US: Florida principal resigns after students shown Michelangelo's ‘David’ statue in class

Ukrainian air defences early Monday (May 1) shot down 15 out of 18 missiles launched by Russian forces as Moscow intensifies its offensive. Taking to Telegram, Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, the commander-in-chief of Ukraine's armed forces, said, "Around 2:30 am (1130 GMT), the Russian invaders attacked Ukraine from strategic aviation planes," the news agency Reuters reported.

Kyiv's city officials, meanwhile, said that all missiles directed at the capital city were destroyed in what they said was the second attack on the city in three days. The city administration posted on Telegram that there were no casualties among the civilian population and no destruction of residential facilities or infrastructure.

Air defence systems were also called into action to shield the Kyiv region.

Russia also launched missiles at other Ukrainian regions overnight, including on Dnipropetrovsk and Mykola Lukashuk, the head of the Dnipro region council, said. Air defence crews shot down seven missiles, while 25 people needed medical help. The eastern Ukrainian city of Pavlohrad was struck twice overnight, Reuters reported.

Bogomaz said that one shell hit a residential house sparking a fire and that two more houses were damaged, adding the village declared a state of emergency.

"Work is continuing on the removal of rubble. In the areas where operational measures have been completed, a damage assessment commission has begun working," the local governor said.
