British people trapped in Sudan have said they are being forced to make hard choices about whether to fly home without their family members the United Kingdom (UK) government would not allow on flights. This news comes as the government ended its evacuation efforts from the conflict-torn country, after extracting over 2,450 people on dozens of flights.

Speaking to The Guardian, Suleiman, a British national, said that a UK government official called him to say that he could be evacuated with his two children only if he left his pregnant wife behind. His children are British nationals, but their mother is a Sudanese citizen.

“He said: ‘I’m sorry, you’re going to fly with your children, but your wife cannot.’ When I told him that’s impossible, the children are dependent on their mother and I can’t leave my wife who has a high-risk pregnancy, he just refused and said that’s all I can do,” Suleiman said, as quoted by The Guardian.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday (May 3) that his country did not attack Russian President Vladimir Putin after Moscow claimed that two drones were shot down over the Kremlin and termed it an assassination attempt.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday (May 3) that his country did not attack Russian President Vladimir Putin after Moscow claimed that two drones were shot down over the Kremlin and termed it an assassination attempt. "We didn't attack Putin... We fight on our territory, we are defending our villages and cities," Zelensky told reporters at a press conference with Nordic leaders in Finland's capital city Helsinki. "We fight on our territory. We are defending our villages and cities. We don't have, you know, enough weapons for this, that's why we don't use it anywhere. For us that is the deficit, we can't spend it and we didn't attack Putin. We leave it to the tribunal," Zelensky added. ALSO READ | Russia arrests Ukraine sabotage group's members for planning 'assassinations' Zelensky arrived in Finland earlier in the day and held talks with Finnish President Sauli Niinisto. He thanked Niinisto for the military support to Ukraine so far and said the two have agreed to speed up further deliveries. The Ukrainian president also participated in a summit in Helsinki which saw a gathering of the leaders of the five Nordic nations. Zelensky reaffirmed that Ukraine aims to be a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), while the Nordic NATO members said they would "continue to support Ukraine on its path towards future membership." Zelensky's visit to Finland was announced only after his arrival amid tight security in the Finnish capital. Recently, Finland joined NATO in response to Russia's offensive in Ukraine. Hitting back at the membership of the intergovernmental military alliance, Russia said Finland's accession to NATO was a dangerous historic mistake that would weaken security in the wider region and force Moscow to take counter-measures. Medvedev calls for 'elimination' of Zelensky As Russia accused Ukraine of a drone attack on the Kremlin, former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev called for the physical elimination of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his clique in Kyiv. United States President Joe Biden said on Thursday (May 4) that the ongoing conflict in Sudan must end and threatened sanctions against those responsible for the bloodshed. Issuing a statement, President Biden said that the violence taking place in Sudan is a tragedy, and it is a betrayal of the Sudanese people's clear demand for civilian government and a transition to democracy.

"I join the peace-loving people of Sudan and leaders around the world in calling for a durable ceasefire between the belligerent parties. This violence, which has already stolen the lives of hundreds of civilians and began during the holy month of Ramadan, is unconscionable. It must end," Biden said.

The US president added that he issued a new executive order that expands American authorities to respond to the violence with sanctions "that hold individuals responsible for threatening the peace, security, and stability of Sudan; undermining Sudan’s democratic transition; using violence against civilians; or committing serious human rights abuses."

Biden also talked about American efforts for the safe departure of thousands of people - Americans and others from Sudan.

"Our diplomatic efforts to urge all parties to end the military conflict and allow unhindered humanitarian access continue, as do our efforts to assist those remaining Americans, including by providing them information on exit options," Biden further said and highlighted that Washington stands ready to support enhanced humanitarian assistance when conditions allow.

Pakistan: Eight teachers killed in separate shootings in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, says report

The emergency committee of the World Health Organization (WHO) met on Thursday (May 4) to discuss if Covid is still a global health emergency. According to a report by the news agency AFP, the meeting was supposed to take place during the day and was chaired by French doctor Didier Houssin. But it could be days before the outcome of the meeting is published.

The committee's meeting comes more than three years after it first sounded the WHO's highest emergency alarm as, what was then called the novel coronavirus, began spreading outside China. The committee has been meeting every three months to discuss the pandemic and reports to WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who then decides whether Covid remains a global emergency.

It is not yet clear which way experts will lean, but there have been indications that the WHO is open to declaring an end to the emergency.

Speaking to the news agency Reuters, Professor Marion Koopmans, a Dutch virologist on the WHO panel, said it is possible that the emergency might end, "but it is critical to communicate that Covid remains a complex public health challenge." Professor Koopmans did not provide any other details.

On the other hand, a source close to the negotiations told the news agency that lifting the public health emergency of international concern or PHEIC label could impact global funding or collaboration efforts.

Thursday's meeting of WHO's emergency committee comes a day after the United Nations health agency put out a new strategy for combating Covid over the next two years in which Tedros said the aim was "to support countries as they transition from an emergency response to longer-term sustained COVID-19 disease prevention, control and management".

Covid figures have been falling for a while, but when the emergency committee met in January, it concluded the PHEIC tag was still merited.

Earlier on Thursday, Professor Salim Abdool Karim, a leading Covid expert who previously advised the South African government on its response, said the world is not out of the pandemic but has reached a different stage.

Professor Karim, who is not a part of the WHO panel, said if the emergency status is lifted, governments should still maintain testing, vaccination and treatment programmes.

The death toll due to heavy rain and flooding in northern and western Rwanda has climbed to 130 and more than 5,000 houses have been destroyed, the news agency Reuters reported on Thursday (May 4). "So far, we have recorded 130 deaths. Additionally, there are 77 injuries, with 36 of those individuals currently in the hospital. We also have five people missing," Alain Mukuralinda, deputy government spokesperson, said.

Mukuralinda said that 5,100 houses were destroyed and an additional 2,500 houses were affected. He added landslides and flooding had destroyed 17 roads and 26 bridges, one hospital, two health posts and five health centres.

The spokesperson also said the government sent relief assistance, comprising food, hygienic kits, bedding, and kitchen utensils and these were being transported to Ngororero, Rubavu, Rutsiro, Nyabihu - the most affected districts in Western province.

Earlier on Thursday, Prime Minister Édouard Ngirente paid a visit to the affected areas in western Rwanda and said that search efforts were underway as there were some bodies still buried in the mud which meant the death toll could still rise."These disasters were caused by floods and erosion, which resulted in houses collapsing on people," Prime Minister Ngirente added.

Floodwaters have been rising in Rwanda causing a threat to more lives. The country has been experiencing heavy and sustained rains since late March.

On Wednesday, Rwandan Minister in charge of Emergency Management Marie Solange Kayisire said that relief efforts began immediately, including helping to bury victims of the disaster and providing supplies to those whose homes were destroyed.

Pakistan Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto arrived in Goa on Thursday (May 4) to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation's (SCO) Foreign Ministers' meeting. Speaking to the media, Foreign Minister Bhutto said he was very happy to participate and hoped that the SCO meeting would be fruitful. Ahead of his arrival, Bhutto tweeted that his decision to attend the SCO Foreign Ministers' meeting illustrated Pakistan's strong commitment to the charter of the SCO.

"During my visit, which is focused exclusively on the SCO, I look forward to constructive discussions with my counterparts from friendly countries," Bhutto added.

Bhutto is the first Pakistani foreign minister to visit India after a gap of nearly 12 years. The previous visit was in 2011 by then-foreign minister Hina Rabbani Khar.

A few days back, Hina Rabbani Khar, who is currently serving as the minister of state for foreign affairs of Pakistan, told WION that Bhutto's participation (in SCO) summit was not an India visit, but an SCO visit.

"Within the same line, why the India visit? It is not an India visit, It must not be seen as an India visit. It’s an SCO visit. Ugandan minister Charles Engola shot and killed by bodyguard: Reports

The Brazilian police on Wednesday (May 3) raided the home of former president Jair Bolsonaro and seized his mobile phone as part of an investigation into his Covid vaccination records. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the investigation might answer questions about how Bolsonaro- who vowed never to get vaccinated against Covid- was registered as vaccinated in health records made public in February.

The police said they were investigating "false data" allegedly added to a national Covid database between November 2021 and December 2022, when Bolsonaro was Brazil's president.

Confirming the raid on his home, Bolsonaro reiterated he was never vaccinated against Covid, and denied any role in allegedly forging documents.

"For my part, there was nothing falsified. I didn't take the vaccine. Period," Bolsonaro said.

"I did not take the vaccine, it was a personal decision of mine after reading the Pfizer package insert. They took a photo of my wife's vaccine card and she had the Janssen vaccine in the United States and my 12-year-old daughter Laura also did not get the vaccine. I am surprised by a search operation and seizure for such a reason and I have nothing more to say,” the former president said.

"My (mobile phone) has been seized, my phone has no password, I will make that very clear. I have nothing to hide. Not only about the vaccination card, but I also have nothing to hide about anything. It would be good if we had a democratic country where we could discuss all subjects. There are subjects that are forbidden to talk about in Brazil and one of them is about the vaccine,” he added.

In a statement, the federal police said that they were serving 16 search warrants and six preventive arrest warrants in Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro as part of the operation but did not disclose the names of those targeted.

However, two people familiar with developments told Reuters that the police arrested Mauro Cid and Max Guilherme, personal assistants to Bolsonaro as the president who stayed on as his aides when he stepped down.

Brazil: Ex-president Jair Bolsonaro's home raided in vaccine records probe

Dissident Belarusian journalist Raman Pratasevich, who was arrested after being pulled off a commercial flight in 2021, was sentenced to eight years in prison on Wednesday (May 3). According to a report by the news agency Associated Press, Pratasevich ran Nexta, a Telegram messaging app channel that was widely used by participants in mass protests against the disputed 2020 election that gave Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko a sixth term in office. Pratasevich was charged with organising unrest and plotting to seize power.

Nexta is one of the most well-known opposition outlets in the country. Together with its sister channel, Nexta Live, it has 1.4 million followers.

In May 2021, Belarusian flight controllers ordered a Ryanair flight travelling from Greece to Lithuania to land in Belarus' capital city Minsk, telling the crew there was a bomb threat against the flight. Authorities found no explosives on board once the aircraft landed, but Pratasevich- a Belarusian citizen who lived in exile at the time- was arrested.

His girlfriend, Sofia Sapega, who is a Russian, was also arrested. Following the two arrests, the aircraft was allowed to continue to its original destination. Western countries condemned Raman Pratasevich’s dramatic arrest and imposed a raft of sanctions and barred their aircraft from flying over Belarus.

Following his arrest, Pratasevich appeared on Belarusian television several times to confess, denounce the opposition and apologise to President Lukashenko. Critics said that the journalist's appearances were made under duress.

Pratasevich and his girlfriend Sapega were released from custody and put under house arrest. In May last year, Sapega was convicted and sentenced to six years in prison. A message on a Telegram channel billed as belonging to Pratasevich sought to distance him from his girlfriend — saying they had separated long before and that he was married to someone else.

However, it could not be verified whether the post was freely written by Pratasevich or any of the claims it, the Associated Press reported.

Sapega, meanwhile, petitioned Russian authorities to extradite her to Russia to serve out the remainder of her sentence. Belarus agreed but it was not yet clear when this would happen.

The next day, the police arrived (at the hotel) and Zhang was taken to the police station to record a statement, the Shanghai Daily reported on Tuesday. Giving details of what transpired at the police station, Zhang said the police officials told him that a murder took place in his previous room and a dead body was found under the bed. The police also told him not to worry as they have already arrested a person. Zhang's DNA samples were collected and he was allowed to go. The man went on to share additional details, including the transfer record of the room fee and his chat history with the hotel's staff. Zhang's posts on social media detailing the experience have led to tens of thousands of reactions. The Guzang Shuhua Inn has denied the incident altogether. The victim was identified as Wang. The suspect, Gao, was arrested on a train to Lanzhou city in a joint operation carried out by the Lanzhou police and the Xi'an police.
