Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who exited the network last month, said early Wednesday (May 10) that he would relaunch his show on Twitter soon. Taking to Twitter, Carlson posted a video where he said, "Starting soon, we'll be bringing a new version of the show we've been doing for the last six and a half years to Twitter.”

“We bring some other things too, which we'll tell you about. But for now, we're just grateful to be here,” he added.

Carlson pointed out that there are not many platforms that allow free speech, and the last big one remaining in the world, the only one is Twitter. "Twitter has long served as the place where our national conversation incubates and develops. Twitter is not a partisan site, everybody is allowed here," he added.

Former United States president Donald Trump is a "habitual liar" and sexual abuser who destroyed E. Jean Carroll’s reputation to protect his own after the famous columnist accused him of rape, a jury in New York heard on Monday (May 8). Carroll, 79, filed a lawsuit last year against Trump claiming that he raped her dressing room at the Bergdorf Goodman department store in Manhattan in 1996 and then defamed her by denying it happened.

In the closing arguments in Carroll's civil lawsuit for batter and defamation on Monday, her lawyer Roberta Kaplan told that they could believe the evidence of 10 witnesses for her client or Trump who declined to testify, according to a report by The Guardian.

Kaplan said Trump's defence to the alleged rape was that everyone else is “lying about everything”.

“In order to find for him you have to find that Donald Trump, the nonstop liar, is the only one in this court telling the truth,” Kaplan added, The Guardian reported.

However, the former president's lawyer Joe Tacopina told the Jury that by her own admission, large parts of Carroll's account were “unbelievable” and “remarkable”. Tacopina said the whole story was an unbelievable work of fiction.

The jury is expected to begin considering its verdict in the case on Tuesday, The Guardian reported. During the closing arguments on Monday, Caroll's lawyer Kaplan told the jury that Trump must face justice, pointing out that no one, even a former president was above the law.

The lawyer further said the evidence showed that Carroll was not a random victim of an attack by Trump but one of a series of women who fell victim to his “modus operandi” of charming and then assaulting them.

Meanwhile, Trump's lawyer Tacopina said that emails sent by one of the women, Carol Martin, who testified that E. Jean Carroll told her about the alleged rape after days, was evidence of the conspiracy. In one of the messages, Martin criticised the former president and said “As soon as we’re both well enuf [sic] to scheme, we must do our patriotic duty again”.

Carroll’s lawyers said that Martin would not have written the messages if she was part of a conspiracy or other messages in which she criticised the columnist for going public with the accusation after keeping quiet for more than two decades.

However, Joe Tacopina accused Carroll of “exploiting the pain and suffering” of real victims of sexual abuse to bring a politically motivated case against Trump. He accused her of abusing the system by bringing a false claim. The lawyer also said it did not matter that Trump did not testify because Carroll’s own words “tore apart her story”.

Russia has suspended operations at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in light of provocations by Ukrainian forces. Yevgeny Balitsky, the Moscow-installed governor of the Russia-controlled part of the surrounding region, cited concerns over Kyiv's anticipated counteroffensive to reclaim Russian-held territory, including areas in the Zaporizhzhia region. The conflict in Sudan rages as the capital city Khartoum reported air strikes on Monday (May 8). A southern Khartoum resident told AFP that their family could hear “the sound of airstrikes which appeared to come from near a market in central Khartoum.”

And in the United States, a man in Brownsville, Texas has been charged with manslaughter after he seemingly lost control of his car and ploughed into a crowd of mostly Venezuelans outside a migrant centre. Morning brief: Russia suspends operations at Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, air strikes continue in Sudan, & more

The United Nations said on Tuesday (May 9) that heavy fighting in Sudan has displaced more than 700,000 people in the country since mid-April, adding the figure doubled in a week. Addressing a press conference in Geneva, Paul Dillon, a spokesperson for the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM) said, "There are now more than 700,000 internally displaced by the fighting which began on April 15. Last Tuesday, the figure stood at 340,000."

Dillon pointed out that even before the conflict started on April 15, 3.7 million people were registered as internally displaced in Sudan. He said that many internally displaced persons (IDPs) are sheltering with relatives, while others are gathering in schools, mosques and public buildings.

The IOM spokesperson further said that the agency was conscious of the enormous pressures placed on host communities already suffering from the effects of over three weeks of fighting.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHRC) said that another 150,000 people fled Sudan since the fighting started between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The UN has estimated that five million additional people would need emergency assistance inside Sudan, while 860,000 people are expected to flee to neighbouring states.

During Tuesday's briefing, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that 604 people have been killed and over 5,000 injured so far.

The conflict in the North African country rages on as negotiations between the warring factions have yielded no major progress. Despite several ceasefires, tensions and deadly fighting persist in Khartoum and other areas.

Last Saturday (May 6), both factions sent their envoys to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for peace talks. But there has been no word on the progress of these talks.

On Monday, Sudanese Special Envoy Dafallah al-Haj met South Sudan President Salva Kiir. The talks with President Kiir were aimed at fostering a lasting ceasefire and granting safe passage to humanitarian support as well as providing an escape corridor for fleeing civilians.

Following the meeting, Dafallah al-Haj told reporters that Sudan's army was in full control. "The elements of the Rapid Deployment Force, the rebellion, have infiltrated inside the civilian quarters and they are now taking, considering, or actually occupying hospitals. That is why the army does not want to go aggressively because of the safety of the civilians," he said.

Sudan conflict: More than 700,000 displaced since mid-April, says UN

Providing simple and cheap healthcare measures to pregnant women -- such as offering aspirin -- could prevent more than a million babies from being stillborn or dying as newborns in developing countries every year, new research said on Tuesday.

An international team of researchers also estimated that one-quarter of the world's babies are born either premature or underweight, adding that almost no progress is being made in this area.

The team called for governments and organisations to ramp up the care women and babies receive during pregnancy and birth in 81 low- and middle-income countries.

Eight proven and easily implementable measures could prevent more than 565,000 stillbirths in these countries, according to a series of papers published in the Lancet journal.

The measures included providing micronutrient, protein and energy supplements, low-dose aspirin, the hormone progesterone, education on the harms of smoking, and treatments for malaria, syphilis and bacteria in urine.

If steroids were made available to pregnant women and doctors did not immediately clamp the umbilical cord, the deaths of more than 475,000 newborn babies could also be prevented, the research found.

Implementing these changes would cost an estimated $1.1 billion, the researchers said.

This is "a fraction of what other health programmes receive", said Per Ashorn, a lead study author and professor at Finland's Tampere University.

Another study author, Joy Lawn of the London School for Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, told AFP that the researchers used a new definition for babies born premature or underweight.

She said the traditional way to determine a baby had a low birthweight -- if it was born weighing under 2.5 kilogrammes (5.8 pounds) -- was "a bit randomly selected" by a Finnish doctor in 1919.

Raised hopes for surviving childbirth

This "very blunt measure" has remained the benchmark for more than a century, despite plentiful evidence that "those babies are not all the same", Lawn said.

The researchers analysed a database that included 160 million live births from 2000 to 2020 to work out how often babies are born "too soon and too small", she said.

"Quite shockingly, we found that this is much more common once you start to think about it in a more nuanced way."

The researchers estimated that 35.3 million -- or one in four -- of the babies born worldwide in 2020 were either premature or too small, classifying them under the new term "small vulnerable newborns".

While most of the babies were born in southern Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, Lawn emphasised that every country was affected.

Another study published on Tuesday estimated that a different simple and cheap treatment plan could reduce the rate of severe bleeding in women after giving birth by 60 percent.

Postpartum bleeding is the leading cause of women dying during pregnancy worldwide, affecting 14 million people a year, mostly in developing countries.

The treatment plan combines a drape, which is put under the woman to measure how much blood is being lost, with uterine massage, an intravenous drip and some drugs to stop the bleeding.

Study co-author Arri Coomarasamy of Birmingham University in the UK said the new approach could "radically improve women's chances of surviving childbirth globally".

Pascale Allotey of the World Health Organization, which co-led the research, said: "No woman should fear for her life when giving birth."

Providing simple and cheap healthcare measures to pregnant women -- such as offering aspirin -- could prevent more than a million babies from being stillborn or dying as newborns in developing countries every year, new research said on Tuesday.

Raised hopes for surviving childbirth This "very blunt measure" has remained the benchmark for more than a century, despite plentiful evidence that "those babies are not all the same", Lawn said. The researchers analysed a database that included 160 million live births from 2000 to 2020 to work out how often babies are born "too soon and too small", she said. "Quite shockingly, we found that this is much more common once you start to think about it in a more nuanced way." The researchers estimated that 35.3 million -- or one in four -- of the babies born worldwide in 2020 were either premature or too small, classifying them under the new term "small vulnerable newborns". Pascale Allotey of the World Health Organization, which co-led the research, said: "No woman should fear for her life when giving birth." The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, involved more than 210,000 women in Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and Tanzania. Tens of thousands of Serbians held a protest against violence in the capital city of Belgrade on Monday (May 8), days after two mass shootings killed 17 people. The "Serbia against violence" demonstrations saw people from across the Balkan country's political divide rallying against violence. The protesters gathered in front of the Serbian parliament before taking to the streets to rally near government offices. The protesters demanded better security, a ban on violent television content and the resignation of many key government officials, including Interior Minister Bratislav Gasic and the director of the country's security intelligence agency Aleksandar Vulin. They also demanded an urgent parliamentary session and a debate about the overall security situation in the country, the news agency Reuters reported. ALSO READ | Neo-Nazi symbols, fight in schoolyard: What we know about Serbia’s second mass shooting In a statement, the leftist Let's Not Let Belgrade Drown party said, "We demand an immediate stop to further promotion of violence in the media and public space, as well as responsibility for the long-standing inadequate response from competent authorities." In Belgrade, Marina Vidojevic, an elementary school teacher, told demonstrators, "We are here because we can't wait any longer. We've waited too long, we've been silent too long, we've turned our heads too long. We want safe schools, streets, villages and cities for all children." Protests were also held in Serbia's northern city Novi Sad. The two mass shootings last week sent shockwaves across Serbia. Last Wednesday (May 3), a school student brought two handguns to his school and killed eight pupils and a security guard. Six other pupils and a teacher were injured in the shooting. A day later, a 21-year-old man brandishing an assault rifle and a pistol killed eight people and wounded 14 others. Both of these shooters surrendered to the police. Last Sunday, Serbia's Education Minister Branko Ruzic resigned citing the "cataclysmic tragedy" caused by last week's school shooting in his resignation letter. President Vucic calls protests a 'political' stunt Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic dismissed the "Serbia against violence" demonstrations, calling it a "political" stunt. "I asked truly and sincerely... people not to organise something like this, not because I was in any way scared or threatened, but because I felt that it was not good for the country," Vucic said, AFP reported. Following the mass shootings last week, the president vowed to disarm Serbia with an ambitious plan that would crack down on legal and illicit firearms in the country. E-commerce giant Amazon is offering customers $10 to pick up purchases rather than having them shipped to a home address, as the company has joined other retailers in racing to slash costs for home delivery and returns. According to a report by the news agency Reuters early Tuesday (May 9), Amazon for the last few days sent emails to an unknown number of Prime subscribers offering them $10 to retrieve an order of $25 or more at company pickup points at locations such as Whole Foods, Amazon Fresh or Kohl's stores.

Dean Maciuba, a New York-based shipping consultant, was one of the customers who received the offer. Speaking to Reuters, Maciuba said that the increasing use of Amazon pick-up points would help the company bypass costly residential package dropoffs and it is a huge opportunity for the company to reduce the cost of delivery. It also helps train consumers to tender returns directly to the company, Maciuba added.

Last month, the e-commerce giant started charging customers a $1 fee if they returned their packages via a United Parcel Service (UPS) store when there is an Amazon pickup/return location closer to their delivery address.

Speaking to Business Insider on April 12, Amazon spokesperson Steve Kelly said that the company always offers a free option for customers to return their items. "If a customer would prefer to return their item at a UPS Store when there is a free option closer to their delivery address, a very small amount of customers may incur a $1 fee," Kelly added.

For years, Amazon has worked to train customers to expect fast, no-fee deliveries and returns. But as the company tightens its belt after a period of explosive growth, it has made numerous moves to reduce delivery-related costs across the board.

Last year, Amazon hiked the price of its annual Prime subscription which includes free shipping benefits by $20 to $139. And in February this year, it raised minimum order thresholds for free grocery delivery. As per the new policy, delivery fees for Amazon Fresh would be $3.95 for orders of $100 to $150, $6.95 for orders of $50 to $100 and $9.95 for orders of less than $50.

Amazon offers customers $10 to pick up purchases as it targets delivery costs: Report

Researchers have named a new group of butterflies after Lord of the Rings villain Sauron. According to a report by the Natural History Museum in London on Sunday (May 7), while there are currently only two members of the genus Saurona, many more as-yet-undescribed species are thought to exist. Saurona triangula and Saurona aurigera are the first butterflies named after Sauron.

"The Eye of Sauron is a well-known symbol from the Lord of the Rings and was famously depicted on screen as a fiery orange eye peering over the landscape of Middle Earth. So when a group of butterflies with bright orange hindwings and dark eyespots needed redescribing, researchers wasted no time in honouring the work of J.R.R. Tolkien in the name of a new genus," the report said.

Saurona is one of the several new butterfly genera described by an international team of researchers in a new paper, and one of the two named by Dr Blanca Huertas, the senior curator of butterflies at the museum. Dr Huertas said giving an unusual name to these butterflies helped to draw attention to this underappreciated group.

"It shows that, even among a group of very similar-looking species, you can find beauty among the dullness," she said and pointed out that naming a genus is not something that happens very often, and it is even rare to be able to name two at once.

"It was a great privilege to do so, and now means that we can start describing new species that we have uncovered as a result of this research, "Dr Huertas added.

But the butterflies are not only the ones to be named after Saurona. Sunday's report by the Natural History Museum said that a dung beetle, a frog and even a dinosaur have been named after the Lord of the Rings villain.

Though naming animals after a fictional character may seem spurious, it can be an important way of drawing attention to them.

Many species have been named after J.R.R. Tolkien and his work. "The wizard Gandalf, for instance, has a group of fossil mammals and species of crab, moth and beetle named after him, while Gollum gives his name to snails, wasps and a fish," the report said.

In 2021, Australian scientists named three beetles after Pokemon species Articuno, Moltres and Zapdos.

The death toll from the floods that devastated two villages in Congo last week has climbed to 401, news agency Reuters reported on Monday (May 8), citing a provincial governor, as more bodies were recovered. The villages of Bushushu and Nyamukubi in Kalehe territory, South Kivu province were flooded last Thursday (May 4) after days of torrential rain triggered landslides and caused rivers to break their banks.

Speaking to Reuters, South Kivu governor Theo Ngwabidje Kasi said on Monday that the toll stood at 401, but did not provide any further details. Reuters reported that the government sent a delegation to Kalehe and declared Monday a day of national mourning with flags lowered at half-mast "in memory of the lost compatriots."
