Papua New Guinea's Foreign Minister Justin Tkatchenko said on Friday (May 12) that he was resigning from the post amid the controversy over the cost and size of the country's delegation to the coronation of King Charles III in London on May 6.

Papua New Guinea's Foreign Minister Justin Tkatchenko said on Friday (May 12) that he was resigning from the post amid the controversy over the cost and size of the country's delegation to the coronation of King Charles III in London on May 6. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, local media has been running hot with insults and criticism of the cost of travel of the 30-member delegation, with many saying the money would have been better spent on hospitals. In a statement on Friday, Tkatchenko said, "I have stood aside as the foreign minister after consulting the prime minister. I want to make sure the recent events do not interfere with the official visits and summits we are going to have with all the World Leaders in the coming weeks. I also want to ensure the truth of this matter is cleared and the misinformation and lies are corrected." Prime Minister James Marape would take over the role of foreign minister. The TikTok video which angered Papua residents Justin Tkatchenko stepped down from the foreign minister's post after his daughter Savannah, who accompanied him to the coronation, posted a flashy TikTok video of the trip. The video, which now stands deleted, angered residents of Papua New Guinea where 40% of the people live in poverty. In the video, Savannah filmed her visit to luxury fashion stores in Singapore and her meal in the "stunning" first-class lounge on her way to London. ALSO READ | Prince Harry had a chat with King Charles hours before coronation, claims royal expert Earlier, Tkatchenko lashed out at his critics by calling them "primitive animals" with "nothing better to do." He faced severe backlash for his comments and later apologised. Speaking to Australian broadcaster ABC last Wednesday, he said, "My daughter now is totally devastated. She is traumatised by some of the most ridiculous and useless comments that I've seen." Prime Minister Marape, meanwhile, acknowledged that Tkatchenko stepped down as the foreign minister in the face of "public uproar" over the video and a "poor choice of words." In a statement, Marape said, "I want to commend the minister for putting the interest of the country ahead of his own." The prime minister also said that he wanted to apologise to Tkatchenko's family, especially Savannah for what he called "the traumatic experience over the last couple of days". "No woman deserves to be treated the way Savannah was treated over the last few days," he said. Tkatchenko's resignation came just days before United States President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are due to visit Papua New Guinea. Tkatchenko, who had been closely involved in American negotiations, said that Biden would sign a defence pact with his country. However, following his resignation, Prime Minister Marape said he would take over supervision of preparations for the arrival of Biden, Modi and more than a dozen Pacific island leaders. Issuing an apology on its website on Sunday (May 14), The Irish Times said the article headlined- "Irish women’s obsession with fake tan is problematic"- was written by someone purporting to be a young immigrant woman in the country. The article made an argument which has been aired in other countries but related it to the Irish context.

The Irish Times removes hoax article generated by AI, issues apology

Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations plan to tighten sanctions on Russia at their summit in Japan this week, with steps aimed at energy and exports aiding Moscow's war effort, said officials with direct knowledge of the discussions.

New measures announced by the leaders during the May 19-21 meetings will target sanctions evasion involving third countries, and seek to undermine Russia's future energy production and curb trade that supports Russia's military, the people said.

Separately, US officials also expect G7 members will agree to adjust their approach to sanctions so that, at least for certain categories of goods, all exports are automatically banned unless they are on a list of approved items.

The Biden administration has previously pushed G7 allies to reverse the group's sanctions approach, which today allows all goods to be sold to Russia unless they are explicitly blacklisted.

That change could make it harder for Moscow to find gaps in the sanctions regime.

While the allies have not agreed to apply the more-restrictive approach broadly, US officials expect that in the most sensitive areas for Russia's military G7 members will adopt a presumption that exports are banned unless they are on a designated list.

The exact areas where these new rules would apply are still being discussed.

"You should expect to see, in a handful of spaces, particularly relating to Russia's defence industrial base, that change in presumption happen," said a US official who declined to be named.

The precise language of the G7 leaders' joint declarations is still subject to negotiation and adjustment before it is released during the summit. The G7 comprises the United States, Japan, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom.

The G7 leaders' action on Russia comes as Ukraine's Western allies hunt for new ways to tighten already restrictive sanctions on Russia, from export controls to visa restrictions and an oil price cap, which have put pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin but not halted the full-scale invasion that started over a year ago.

Some US allies have resisted the idea of banning trade broadly and then issuing category-by-category exemptions.

The European Union, for instance, has its own approach and is also currently negotiating its 11th package of sanctions since Russia invaded Ukraine, with the bulk focused on people and countries circumventing existing trade restrictions.

"The sometimes-discussed approach of 'we ban everything first and allow exceptions' will not work in our view," said one top German government official. "We want to be very, very precise and we want to avoid unintended side effects."

Meanwhile, any change in language, including language specifying that certain trade is banned unless specifically exempted, by the G7 leaders may not necessarily lead to more bans immediately or indeed any change in Russia's posture.

"At least on day one, that change in presumption doesn't change the substance of what's allowed, but it matters for the long-term trajectory of where we're going and the restrictiveness of the overall regime," the US official said.

Ukraine, backed by Western arms and cash, is expected to launch major counter-offensive operations in the coming weeks to try to recapture tracts of its east and south from Russian forces.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has been in Europe this week for meetings with Pope Francis as well as with leaders from France, Italy and Germany. He is expected to address G7 leaders, either virtually or in-person, during their summit in Hiroshima, the officials said.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said last month a G7 move to ban exports to the country would cause Moscow to terminate a Black Sea grain deal that enables vital exports of grain from Ukraine. Food security in the aftermath of the war is also expected to be a major topic at the G7.

G7 leaders to target Russian energy, trade in new sanctions steps

On May 9, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) sabotaged a suite of malicious software used by Russian spies. According to senior American law enforcement officials, FBI technical experts identified and disabled malware wielded by Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) against an undisclosed number of American computers. The officials said that FSB officials behind the malware- known as Snake, were part of a notorious hacking group tracked by the private sector and known as "Turla." This sabotage by the FBI provided a glimpse of the digital tug-of-war between the United States and Russia. What is Snake? According to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) on May 9, the Snake malware is considered the most sophisticated cyber espionage tool designed and used by Center 16 of FSB for long-term intelligence collection on sensitive targets. The CISA said that to carry out operations using this tool, the FSB created a covert peer-to-peer (P2P) network of numerous Snake-infected computers around the world. "Many systems in this P2P network serve as relay nodes which route disguised operational traffic to and from Snake implants on the FSB’s ultimate targets. Snake’s custom communications protocols employ encryption and fragmentation for confidentiality and are designed to hamper detection and collection efforts," the CISA added. The agency said that it identified the Snake infrastructure in more than 50 countries across North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia, including the United States and Russia itself. The FSB started developing Snake as “Uroburos” in late 2003. The development of the initial versions of the implant appeared to be completed around early 2004, with cyber operations first conducted using the implant shortly thereafter. The malware's targets Though Snake has used infrastructure across all industries, its targeting is "purposeful and tactical in nature," according to the CISA. The FSB used Snake to collect sensitive intelligence from high-priority targets such as government networks, journalists and research facilities. Sharing an example, the CISA said that FSB actors used Snake to access and exfiltrate sensitive international relations documents, as well as other diplomatic communications, from a victim in a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) nation. Within the US, the Russian security agency victimised industries including education, small business and media organisations. Critical infrastructure sectors in the US including government facilities were also targeted. The people behind Snake As mentioned earlier, FSB officials behind Snake were part of the hacking group called Turla. On May 9, the US Justice Department said in a statement that for nearly 20 years, "this unit, referred to in court documents as Turla, used versions of Snake to steal sensitive documents from hundreds of computer systems in at least 50 countries, which have belonged to North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member governments, journalists, and other targets of interest to the Russian Federation." After stealing these documents, Turla exfiltrated them through a covert network of unwitting Snake-compromised computers in the US and around the world. Operation MEDUSA The FBI-led Operation MEDUSA was behind the sabotage of the Snake malware. The US Justice Department said in its statement that MEDUSA disabled the malware on compromised computers through the use of an FBI-created tool called PERSEUS, which issued commands that caused the Snake malware to overwrite its vital components. "The FBI developed a tool named PERSEUS which establishes communication sessions with the Snake malware implant on a particular computer, and issues commands that causes the Snake implant to disable itself without affecting the host computer or legitimate applications on the computer," the statement said. The US had started investigating Snake and Snake-related malware tools for nearly two decades. "The US government has monitored FSB officers assigned to Turla conducting daily operations using Snake from a known FSB facility in Ryazan, Russia," the statement added. “The Justice Department, together with our international partners, has dismantled a global network of malware-infected computers that the Russian government has used for nearly two decades to conduct cyber-espionage, including against our NATO allies,” US Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said on the sabotage. “We will continue to strengthen our collective defences against the Russian regime’s destabilizing efforts to undermine the security of the United States and our allies,” he added. A word of caution for victims The Justice Department pointed out that even though Operation MEDUSA disabled the Snake malware on compromised computers, victims should take additional steps to protect themselves from further harm. "The operation to disable Snake did not patch any vulnerabilities or search for or remove any additional malware or hacking tools that hacking groups may have placed on the victim," it said. "Turla frequently deploys a “keylogger” with Snake that Turla can use to steal account authentication credentials, such as usernames and passwords, from legitimate users," the department added and cautioned victims about being aware that the Russian hacking group could use these stolen credentials to fraudulently re-access compromised computers and other accounts. Morning brief: Voting in Thailand begins, Russia-Ukraine war updates, and more

American automotive manufacturer General Motors (GM) said on Friday (May 12) that it was recalling nearly one million Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) in the United States over faulty airbag inflators, according to American media reports. GM recalled 994,763 Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, and GMC Acadia vehicles from the 2014 through 2017 model years with airbag parts produced by ARC Automotive, a report by CBS News on Friday said.

GM said that affected drivers could have the airbag module replaced free of cost. The announcement by the automaker comes amid a push by federal regulators to recall 67 million defective airbag inflators that could explode during deployment.

Earlier, GM told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in March that it was notified about a crash involving a 2017 Chevrolet Traverse in which the front-driver air bag inflator allegedly ruptured during deployment, a report by USA Today said citing a safety report. The driver suffered facial injuries in the crash, as per the NHTSA

The NHTSA has urged ARC Automotive to recall the 67 million defective airbag inflators manufactured before 2018 as they could explode and spray shrapnel around a vehicle.

In a letter to ARC on Friday, the NHTSA said that at least nine air bag-related incidents that occurred between 2009 and March this year resulted in two deaths and multiple severe injuries. A driver in Canada and another in Michigan were killed by an exploding inflator in the driver-side airbag, it said.

After an eight-year probe, NHTSA "tentatively concluded" that the airbag inflators were defective and called on ARC to issue a recall.

"Air bag inflators that project metal fragments into vehicle occupants, rather than properly inflating the attached airbag, create an unreasonable risk of death and injury. Accordingly, the Agency makes this demand that ARC immediately submit to NHTSA a Part 573 Recall Report that identifies a safety defect in the subject driver and passenger air bag inflators," Stephen Ridella, director of NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation, said in the letter.

The NHTSA also said that at least a dozen automakers used the ARC components in their airbags.

On Thursday, ARC Vice President of Product Integrity Steve Gold responded to Ridella by saying that the NHTSA’s position was not based on any objective technical or engineering conclusion about a defect, “but rather conclusory statements regarding hypothesized blockage of the inflator orifice from ‘weld slag.’”

GM recalls nearly one million SUVs in US over faulty airbag inflators: Reports

Singapore on Saturday (May 13) reported its highest temperature in 40 years as a blistering heatwave burns through large parts of South and Southeast Asia. Taking to Facebook, the National Environment Agency said that Saturday's temperature of 37 degrees Celsius was the highest this year, and matched the record for a daily peak recorded in April 1983. The agency said that the warm and dry conditions were expected to continue on Sunday.

The agency also said that short-duration showers were expected next week that might help to moderate the warm temperatures. May is usually one of the warmest months of the year in Singapore.

Amid the rising temperatures, several schools in Singapore have relaxed their rules on uniforms to help pupils manage the heat.

According to a report by Channel News Asia (CNA) on Friday, the Henry Park Primary School said in a notice last week its uniform rules for students would be adjusted between May 5 and May 26.

The notice said that students would be allowed to leave their shirts untucked in school. Female students can also choose to wear shirts with physical education (PE) shorts instead of the school skirt.

At the Raffles Girls’ Primary School, students were told that they did not have to put on their pinafores after PE lessons if they feel it is too warm to do so. Meanwhile, the Methodist Girls’ School was also allowing students to wear their PE uniforms instead of full uniforms, the CNA report said.

Not just Singapore, other countries in South and Southeast Asia are also breaking temperature records.

On May 7, Thailand's capital city Bangkok recorded the highest temperature reaching 41 degrees Celsius, breaching the 40.8 degrees Celsius record in 1983. Bangladesh's capital Dhaka witnessed the highest temperature since the 1960s last week. And last Saturday, Vietnam also recorded 44.1 degrees Celsius, setting a record for the highest temperature in the country.

Seven Sri Lankan tri-force personnel missing during sports event in France: Report

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is losing control of an "increasingly anarchic" Tory party as former ministers openly criticised the direction of policy under his leadership, according to a report in The Guardian. Amid the recriminations over the heavy losses faced by the Conservative party in the recent local council elections, and with pro-Brexit MPs incensed that the government is dropping plans to shred over 4,000 European Union (EU) laws within months, discipline was at risk of completely disintegrating on the right of the party, the report claimed.

On Saturday, former UK home secretary Priti Patel said that the Conservative Party high command under Prime Minister Sunak was responsible for the losses in the election. Addressing the inaugural conference of the pro-Boris Johnson Conservative Democratic Organisation (CDO) in Bournemouth, Patel said the party leadership needed a moment of reflection after the results.

Patel also praised former prime minister Boris Johnson for delivering on people's priorities.

During the conference, Nadine Dorries, the former culture secretary, said that the party underwent an “astonishing political tumble” since Johnson secured an 80-strong majority in 2019 and was “going backwards”.

"We are drifting and people know that. They can sense it and they can smell it. We no longer have that inspirational leader and those visionary policies. What happened to levelling up? It’s been all but dumped … a U-turn on the promised bonfire of EU regulation, which in itself demonstrates a paucity of ambition," Dorries said, The Guardian reported.

Though the former culture secretary did not call for Johnson to replace Sunak, she said, "The solution to most problems in politics are usually quite simple – you need the right leader, you need the right vision and you need to make people feel inspired. … I don’t think we’re there at the moment."

The criticism of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is focusing on last week's predicted reverse over the retained EU law bill, which will be the subject of further argument and controversy during its report stage in the Lords, with pro-EU Tory peers among those backing a series of amendments to limit the power of ministers to unilaterally scrap any laws.

Ex-UK ministers openly criticise direction of policy under PM Sunak's leadership: Report

Russia claimed on Saturday (May 13) that Ukraine used long-range missiles from the United Kingdom to target civilian sites in the Russian-held city of Luhansk in eastern Ukraine on Friday, the news agency AFP reported. In a statement, the Russian defence ministry said, "Storm Shadow air-to-air missiles supplied to the Kyiv regime by Great Britain were used for the strike, despite London's declarations that these weapons would not be used against civilian targets."

The ministry said that nearby residential buildings were damaged, and civilians were injured, including six children. It also said a Sukhoi Su-24 jet that carried the missiles and a MiG-29 aircraft had been shot down.

Ukraine has not commented till now. On Friday, authorities said that two Ukrainian-made "grom" tactical missiles damaged or destroyed administrative buildings at a packaging plant and a factory producing cleaning materials in Luhansk. Earlier, videos shared on social media showed a large plume of thick black smoke billowing over the city.

This missile came a day after the UK became the first country to announce that it started supplying Ukraine with long-range cruise missiles, which would allow it to hit Russian troops and supply dumps far beyond the front lines.

UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said the missiles could be used within Ukrainian territory, implying that he received assurances from Ukraine that they would not be used to attack targets inside Russia's internationally accepted borders.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, two Russian fighter jets and two military helicopters were shot down close to the Ukrainian border, the news agency Reuters reported citing Russian media.

According to a report by Kommersant, a Su-34 fighter-bomber, a Su-35 fighter and two Mi-8 helicopters had made up a raiding party, and had been "shot down almost simultaneously" in an ambush in the Bryansk region.

"According to preliminary data ... the fighters were supposed to deliver a missile and bomb attack on targets in the Chernihiv region of Ukraine, and the helicopters were there to back them up - among other things to pick up the 'Su' crews if they were shot down," the report said.

Russian news agency TASS, on the other hand, said a Su-34 aircraft crashed in that region, adding an engine fire in a helicopter caused it to crash near Klintsy. However, there was no mention of the Su-35 or a second helicopter.

Turkish citizens will vote on Sunday (May 14) in a crucial election that, according to several experts, could unseat President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after 20 years in power and halt his government's increasingly authoritarian path. According to opinion polls, President Erdogan's challenger, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who heads an alliance of six opposition parties, has a slight lead, but if either of the leaders fails to get over 50% of the vote, there will be a runoff election on May 28, the news agency Reuters reported. Polls will open at 8 am (0500 GMT) and close at 5 pm (1400 GMT). And as per Turkish law, the reporting of any results is banned until 9 pm. Eligible voters will also elect a new parliament, which is also a tight race between the People's Alliance comprising Erdogan's conservative AK Party (AKP) and the nationalist MHP and others, and Kilicdaroglu's Nation Alliance of six opposition parties, including his secularist Republican People's Party (CHP). ALSO READ | Another Twitter Files?: Netizens quip at timing of Elon Musk blocking content in Turkey Erdogan's campaign over the past month has focused on the government's achievements in the defence industry and infrastructure projects and his assertion that the opposition would roll back such developments. On the other hand, Kilicdaroglu, a former civil servant, promises that if he wins he would return to orthodox economic policies, away from Erdogan's heavy management. Kilicdaroglu also said he would seek to return Turkey to the parliamentary system of governance, from Erdogan's executive presidential system passed in a referendum in 2017. The election in Turkey comes three months after the southeast region of the country was hit by a massive earthquake that killed over 50,000 people. Citizens affected by the disaster expressed anger over the slow initial government response, but there is little evidence that this issue will affect the election. A day before poll, Erdogan accuses opposition of working with Biden On Saturday, President Erdogan held his last election rallies in Istanbul and accused the opposition of working with United States President Joe Biden to topple him. "Biden gave the order to topple Erdogan, I know this. All my people know this. If that is the case, then the ballots tomorrow will give a response to Biden too," Reuters quoted Erdogan as saying. Later, a spokesperson from the US State Department said that Turkey was a long-standing American ally and that Washington would be following the election closely. But the spokesperson said the US does not take sides in elections. "Our only interest is in the democratic process, which should be both free and fair. We trust that Turkish authorities will carry out the election in keeping with its long, proud democratic tradition and its laws," the spokesperson added.
