An intense rescue effort was underway Tuesday to find six passengers, including four children, who have disappeared since the small plane they were traveling in crashed in the Amazon,&nbsp;Colombia's aviation authority said.

The airplane disappeared from radars on May 1 during a journey over the Amazon rainforest in the southern Caqueta department, the Civil Aviation authority said in a statement.

Rescuers found one dead body "inside the aircraft" on Monday but the "six other passengers, including four children, were not found in the airplane nor the surrounding area," the statement added.

Avianline Charter, the company that operated the commercial flight, confirmed the dead body was of the pilot.

The army published photos on Twitter of the plane wedged vertically into thick vegetation with its nose crushed into the ground.

The airplane had left from a jungle location on May 1 heading for San Jose del Guaviare, one of the main cities in&nbsp;Colombia's Amazon rainforest, when it disappeared from radars.

Authorities have yet to determine the reasons for the crash but rescuers have already spent hundreds of hours searching for the missing passengers.

Soldiers and Indigenous communities living close to the crash site have found personal belongings and even a partly eaten apple, leading to the belief that there must have been survivors walking somewhere in the remote jungle area.

Nepali climber Kami Rita&nbsp;Sherpa&nbsp;reached the top of Mount Everest for the 27th time on Wednesday, reclaiming the record for the most summits of the world's highest mountain.

"He successfully reached the summit this morning guiding a Vietnamese climber,"&nbsp;Mingma&nbsp;Sherpa&nbsp;of Seven Summit Treks, his expedition organiser, told AFP.

Nepal is home to eight of the world's 10 highest peaks, including the 8,849-metre (29,032-foot) Everest, and welcomes hundreds of adventurers each spring, when temperatures are warm and winds are typically calm.

Earlier Wednesday, British guide Kenton Cool reached the world's highest point for the 17th time, extending his own record for the most summits by a non-Nepali.

Meanwhile, a 46-year-old Moldovan climber died on the mountain the same day -- the fifth fatality of the season.&nbsp;

Authorities have issued 478 Everest permits to foreign climbers this year, the $11,000 fee part of total costs for a summit ranging from $45,000 to $200,000.

Since most will need a guide, more than 900 people -- a record -- will try to summit this season, which runs until early June.

The 53-year-old Kami Rita&nbsp;Sherpa&nbsp;had held the overall title since 2018, when he ascended Everest for the 22nd time, passing the previous mark he shared with two other&nbsp;Sherpa&nbsp;climbers, both of whom have since retired.

But on Sunday another climber, Pasang&nbsp;Dawa&nbsp;Sherpa, 46, tied the record by reaching the top for the 26th&nbsp;time.

A guide for more than two decades, Kami Rita&nbsp;Sherpa&nbsp;first summited in 1994 when working for a commercial expedition.

Since then, he has climbed Everest almost every year, several times leading the first rope-fixing team to open the route to the top.

"These records were made not with an intention to make them but during my work as a guide,"&nbsp;Sherpa&nbsp;told AFP last month as he headed to base camp.

<h2>'Everest man'</h2>

Dubbed "the Everest man",&nbsp;Sherpa&nbsp;was born in 1970 in Thame, a village in the Himalayas renowned as a breeding ground for successful mountaineers.

Growing up,&nbsp;Sherpa&nbsp;watched his father and then his brother don climbing gear to join expeditions as mountain&nbsp;guides, and&nbsp;was soon following in their footsteps.

In 2019, he reached the summit twice in the span of six days.

Sherpa's client Wednesday was reportedly Chinh Chu, a Vietnamese billionaire who made his fortune&nbsp;in&nbsp;finance, while Cool guided Richard Walker, executive chairman of British supermarket chain Iceland Foods, to the top.

Nepali guides, usually ethnic Sherpas from the valleys around Everest, are considered the backbone of the climbing industry and bear huge risks to carry equipment and food, fix ropes and repair ladders.

Cool, 49, first climbed Everest in 2004, and his 16th ascent last year gave him the sole record for the most summits by a non-Nepali climber, but he told AFP then that he was "surprised" by the attention.&nbsp;

"In reality, it's not that amazing," he said, pointing out that many&nbsp;Sherpa&nbsp;guides had stood on the peak more often than him.

"People go 'it's a world record', it's not a world record," he said. "It's just that I happen to hold the non-Sherpa&nbsp;record, for whatever that is worth, which in my mind, (is) not very much."

The Moldovan climber died at Camp 4, said Expedition Himalaya, which arranged his permit.

"He felt unwell at South Col and despite many attempts to provide him aid he&nbsp;passed&nbsp;away," the company said.

Three Nepali climbers died on the mountain last month when a block of glacial ice fell and swept them into a deep crevasse as they were crossing the treacherous Khumbu icefall as part of a supply mission.

The season's toll rose to four when a 69-year-old US mountaineer died this month during his acclimatisation rotation at around 6,400 metres.

Massive layoff: Vodafone to cut 11,000 jobs

This is the biggest lay off in the history of Vodafone, which employs around 100,000 people.

Vodafone to axe 11,000 jobs over three years

In a statement, Vodafone's new CEO Della Vella said that the company's performance had not been good enough, and to consistently deliver, Vodafone must change.

'Our performance has not been good enough'

Vella also said that Vodafone would be simplified, cutting out complexity to regain its competitiveness.

Germany, which is Vodafone's biggest market, was underperforming, while Spain was under strategic review.

Vodafone's Germany market underperforming

The British Telecom giant is already cutting jobs in its big markets. Earlier this year, Vodafone said it was shedding 1,000 jobs in Italy. And as per a media report, it was looking to axe 1,300 jobs in Germany.

Colombian leftwing guerrilla group the National Liberation Army (ELN) warned on Monday (May 15) that peace talks with the government were in crisis because of the comments made by President Gustavo Petro, the news agency Reuters reported. In a statement, the ELN said, "The peace talks cannot be subject to the fluctuations in the public statements of the president." The ELN added that negotiations entered into a crisis and clarity was needed from the government.&nbsp;

"....clarity is needed from the government so that the path towards peace is cleared and so that we might speak in plain language to the country and the world," Monday's statement further said.&nbsp;

The ELN's remarks show the most recent setback to negotiations, which Colombian President Petro started last year as part of efforts to end the guerrilla group's role in the country's almost 60 years of conflict.&nbsp;

But the two sides failed to reach an agreement on a nationwide ceasefire during a third round of talks that began in Havana this month.

Responding to the ELN, the government said on Monday "It's imperative for us to answer to (affected) communities and establish ... a cessation of hostilities between all parties in the conflict, protection measures for civilians, and the participation of civil society as key pillars."

Earlier, President Petro proposed a regional ceasefire to ELN guerillas pointing out that peace in Colombia today was more important than anything else.&nbsp;

"I propose that we work seriously on a ceasefire, that they stop killing each other, and that we stop killing each other," Petro added.&nbsp;
Hitting back at the president, the ELN said that his comments were "stigmatising and disrespectful," and accused him of throwing into question the "entire architecture" of the peace talks.&nbsp;

The ELN was founded in 1964 by radical catholic priests and has 5,850 members. According to the government, the group finances itself through drug trafficking, illegal mining, and kidnapping.

Negotiations with the ELN under previous governments faltered on the group's diffuse chain of command and dissent within its ranks.

Russia launched an "exceptionally intense" air attack on Ukraine's capital city Kyiv early Tuesday (May 16) using drones, cruise, and probably ballistic missiles, according to city officials. This was the eighth air raid in Kyiv this month. Air raid sirens were heard across nearly all of Ukraine. They blared over Kyiv and nearby regions for more than three hours, according to a report in the news agency Reuters.&nbsp;

Taking to Telegram, Serhiy Popko, head of Kyiv's city military administration, said, "It was exceptional in its density - the maximum number of attack missiles in the shortest period of time."&nbsp;

Citing preliminary information, Popko said the vast majority of enemy targets in the airspace of Kyiv were detected and destroyed. It is not yet known how many objects were shot down over Kyiv and if any of them managed to hit their target.

Officials said that falling debris was reported in Kyiv's Obolonskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, Solomyanskyi and Darnytskyi districts. Ukraine war: Russia launches 'exceptionally intense' air attack on Kyiv, 8th this month

A woman in Singapore has been jailed for eight weeks after she threatened to kill her tenants with a 33 cm knife. According to a report by the South China Morning Post (SCMP) on Monday (May 15), Li Kim, a Chinese national, pleaded guilty in March to one charge of criminal intimidation of the tenants, a couple. The report said that a second similar charge was also taken into consideration during the sentencing of Li, 39.&nbsp;

As per court documents, at 6.30 am on October 20, 2021, the couple- Soo Zu Liang and Teo Yuen Yee, then 26 and 30 years old respectively, were sleeping in their room when they were woken up by Li, who came back home drunk. Liang and Yee heard loud banging sounds, with Li shouting from the living room.&nbsp;

They were&nbsp;tenants in Li’s flat in which they had been renting one room for about four months under an agreement struck with the woman's husband.

Yee heard Li mention that she was holding a knife and would wait for the two of them to leave their room to “kill them both”. Though the door was locked, Yee was worried for her and Liang's safety and the couple called the police.&nbsp;

Security camera footage showed that after Li retrieved the 33-cm long knife from the kitchen, she was then seen pacing around the house. She waved the knife on several occasions while issuing threats such as “I will stab whoever comes out”.&nbsp;

The woman was also seen aggressively knocking on the couple’s room door with the knife. She was subsequently arrested. Following her arrest, the investigation revealed that Li had a blood alcohol level of 88mg/100ml.

After Li pleaded guilty, District Judge Marvin Bay called for a report to assess if the 39-year-old was suitable for a mandatory treatment order- a community sentencing option offered to offenders suffering from mental conditions that contributed to their offence.

But a report from the Institute of Mental Health found no such contribution.

Li's lawyer Amarjit Singh, meanwhile, urged the court to consider a lighter sentence for his client. Singh pointed out that the report did not find any causal link to the incident from any diagnosed condition, and some weight ought to be given to Li’s behaviour during that period as she was experiencing depressive episodes.&nbsp;

But District Judge Bay said the incident was “beyond dispute” given the existence of CCTV footage.&nbsp;

Singapore jails woman who threatened to kill her tenants, says report

A former associate of ex-New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani sued him for $10 million on Monday (May 15), alleging that he subjected her to "wide-ranging sexual assault and harassment." In a complaint filed in a New York state court in Manhattan, Noelle Dunphy said Giuliani started abusing her almost immediately after hiring her in January 2019 as a director of business development and making clear that satisfying his sexual demands was an "absolute requirement" of her job

Dunphy also accused Giuliani, the former personal lawyer of ex-United States President Donald Trump, of wage theft and "alcohol-drenched rants that included sexist, racist, and anti-Semitic remarks" that made her work environment "unbearable."

According to the lawsuit, Giuliani, 78, often demanded oral sex while he was on phone calls on speaker from high-profile friends and clients, including Donald Trump. The lawsuit also alleged that Giuliani forced Dunphy into giving him oral sex "against her will" at his apartment.

The ex-New York City mayor "often demanded that she (Dunphy) work naked, in a bikini, or in short shorts with an American flag on them that he bought for her."

The lawsuit further mentioned that Guiliani often video-called Dunphy from his bed, "where he was visibly touching himself under a white sheet." The woman also claimed Giuliani said her pay "would have to be deferred and her employment kept 'secret'" until his divorce proceedings finished.

In a statement sent to the American media, a spokesperson for Giuliani said that the ex-mayor vehemently and completely denied the allegations in the complaint and planned to thoroughly defend against these allegations, the news agency AFP reported.&nbsp;

"This is pure harassment and an attempt at extortion," the spokesperson said.

Rudy Giuliani served as the mayor of New York City from 1994-2001 earning national acclaim for leading the US financial capital in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks.&nbsp;

However, his reputation plummeted in recent years, largely because he promoted the theory that the 2020 US presidential election was stolen from Donald Trump.&nbsp;

In a complaint filed in a New York state court in Manhattan, Noelle Dunphy said Giuliani started abusing her almost immediately after hiring her in January 2019 as a director of business development and making clear that satisfying his sexual demands was an "absolute requirement" of her job Dunphy also accused Giuliani, the former personal lawyer of ex-United States President Donald Trump, of wage theft and "alcohol-drenched rants that included sexist, racist, and anti-Semitic remarks" that made her work environment "unbearable." ALSO READ | E. Jean Carroll might sue Trump over CNN town hall remarks According to the lawsuit, Giuliani, 78, often demanded oral sex while he was on phone calls on speaker from high-profile friends and clients, including Donald Trump. The lawsuit also alleged that Giuliani forced Dunphy into giving him oral sex "against her will" at his apartment. The ex-New York City mayor "often demanded that she (Dunphy) work naked, in a bikini, or in short shorts with an American flag on them that he bought for her." The lawsuit further mentioned that Guiliani often video-called Dunphy from his bed, "where he was visibly touching himself under a white sheet." The woman also claimed Giuliani said her pay "would have to be deferred and her employment kept 'secret'" until his divorce proceedings finished. In a statement sent to the American media, a spokesperson for Giuliani said that the ex-mayor vehemently and completely denied the allegations in the complaint and planned to thoroughly defend against these allegations, the news agency AFP reported. "This is pure harassment and an attempt at extortion," the spokesperson said. Rudy Giuliani served as the mayor of New York City from 1994-2001 earning national acclaim for leading the US financial capital in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks. However, his reputation plummeted in recent years, largely because he promoted the theory that the 2020 US presidential election was stolen from Donald Trump. However, Vodafone said that group revenue increased by 0.3% to 45.7 billion euros driven by growth in Africa and higher equipment sales, offset by lower European service revenue and adverse exchange rate movements.

China would launch pilot projects in 20 more cities to build a new-era marriage and childbearing culture to vigorously create a child-bearing-friendly social environment. According to a report by the Global Times late Sunday (May 14), the projects would be launched by the China Family Planning Association ahead of the International Day of Families on Monday.&nbsp;

According to association officials, these pilot projects would focus on tasks including prompting marrying and having children at an appropriate age, encouraging parents to share child-rearing responsibilities and curbing high prices and other outdated customs, the Global Times reported.&nbsp;

The cities where the projects would be launched include Guangzhou and Handan in North China's Hebei Province.&nbsp;

Yao Ying, vice president of the association, said that the pilot regions are expected to take innovative and proactive measures "to help foster childbearing-friendly atmospheres and contribute to advancing Chinese modernisation with the support from the high-quality development of the population."

The projects come amid a flurry of measures Chinese provinces are rolling out to spur people to have children, including tax incentives, housing subsidies, and free or subsidised education for having a third child.&nbsp;

Speaking to the Global Times, independent demographer He Yafu said that there has been a decline in births since 2017 as well as a falling marriage rate. "The society needs to guide young people more on the concept of marriage and childbirth, and encourage young people to get married and have children," Yafu added.&nbsp;

Last year, the China Family Planning Association launched a pilot project for a new marriage and childbirth construction culture in 20 cities, including Beijing.&nbsp;

And in February this year, the government unveiled its key policy document, vowing to address exorbitant "bride prices", and extravagant wedding ceremonies as part of efforts to strengthen the construction of public cultural-ethical standards in China's rural areas.

Subsequently, many provinces, cities and counties responded to the call to advocate new-era marriage culture and investigate and deal with related issues.

The report further said that as part of efforts to build this culture and encourage childbearing, civil affairs agencies in several cities announced that they would accept marriage registrations on May 20.

According to government figures, Christians represent only three per cent of Sudan's population. However, Christian leaders have said the figure is much higher.&nbsp;

The conflict in Sudan started on April 15 between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, who now leads the RSF.&nbsp;

And on Monday, the conflict entered its first month with no end to the fighting in sight despite multiple truce deals between the warring factions. Sudan's capital city Khartoum has become a desolate war zone with gun battles raging in the dusty, deserted streets outside.&nbsp;

Fighting continued on Monday morning with loud explosions heard across Khartoum. Speaking to AFP, a southern Khartoum resident said, "The situation is becoming worse by the day. People are getting more and more scared because the two sides... are becoming more and more violent."

Over 750 people have died in the conflict with thousands more wounded and nearly a million people displaced, according to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project.

Last week, the United Nations (UN) said that around 200,000 people fled Sudan in the month of fighting. "As violence in Sudan continues for a fourth week, nearly 200,000 refugees and returnees have been forced to flee the country, with more crossing borders daily seeking safety," UN refugee agency spokesperson Olga Sarrado told reporters on May 12.&nbsp;
