Morning brief: Russia arrests 3 hypersonic missile scientists, Montana becomes 1st US state to ban TikTok

Jack Teixeira, a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard suspected of leaking highly classified military documents, was warned repeatedly over his mishandling of classified information.

Jack Teixeira, a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard suspected of leaking highly classified military documents, was warned repeatedly over his mishandling of classified information. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press, Justice Department lawyers made this disclosure in a court filing on Wednesday urging the magistrate judge to keep Teixeira behind bars. The judge is expected to hear more arguments Friday on the prosecutors' detention request and issue a ruling. Teixeria, 21, was arrested from his residence on April 13 and was charged with violating the Espionage Act. The documents about top national security issues shared in a chatroom on the social media platform Discord were believed to be the most serious security breach in the US since more than 700,000 documents, videos and diplomatic cables appeared on the WikiLeaks website in 2010. Superiors raised concerns about Teixeria's handling of classified details Texieria's superiors at the Massachusetts Air National Guard had earlier raised concerns internally on multiple occasions about his handling or viewing of classified information. In their filing, the prosecutors told the judge that the 21-year-old continued leaking documents even after he was admonished by superiors on two separate occasions last year over “concerning actions” he took related to classified information. A September 2022 memo from the Air National Guard 102nd Intelligence Wing that prosecutors filed in court said that Teixeria "had been observed taking notes on classified intelligence information". He was instructed to no longer take notes in any form on classified intelligence information. Another memo filed next month (October 2022) said a superior was made aware that Teixeira was “potentially ignoring the cease-and-desist order on deep diving into intelligence information” given to him the month before. He attended a meeting and proceeded to ask very specific questions. He was told again to focus on his job, not any “deep dives” into classified intelligence information. And a third memo from February this year showed that the 21-year-old was again found viewing information “that was not related to his primary duty and was related to the intelligence field”. Prosecutors said in their filing that Teixeira continued to share information with his "online associates, defying these admonishments and taking further efforts to conceal his unlawful conduct," the Associated Press reported. Release Teixeria to his father’s home: Lawyers Meanwhile, Jack Teixeira's lawyers urged the judge to release him to his father's home while highlighting that the man did not flee when media outlets began publishing his name shortly before his arrest. In their court filing, the lawyers said there had been many Espionage Act cases in which courts approved release or the government did not seek to keep the person behind bars during pretrial. They also said there is no allegation that Teixeira ever intended for documents to be distributed widely. Mexican security forces are searching for about 50 migrants who were kidnapped from a commercial bus, authorities said Wednesday.

The kidnapping took place in the central state of San Luis Potosi, the Attorney General's Office there said. The bus, whose two drivers were also missing, was discovered further north in the border state of Nuevo Leon on Tuesday, it added, without specifying when the incident took place.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador told a press conference the National Guard has been deployed to try to locate the migrants.

On Tuesday, Nuevo Leon's security agency tweeted that nine migrants - aged from 18 to 35 and from Honduras and Venezuela - had been rescued.

The San Luis Potosi Attorney General's Office said it was verifying whether the nine were part of the larger group that was kidnapped.

A 77-year-old woman from the US state of Ohio married herself in a wedding ceremony surrounded by neighbours, friends and family. According to a report by Today.

A 77-year-old woman from the US state of Ohio married herself in a wedding ceremony surrounded by neighbours, friends and family. According to a report by Today.com on Tuesday (May 16), Dorothy "Dottie" Fideli, a resident of the O’Bannon Terrace Retirement Community in Goshen married herself on May 13. Fideli asked Rob Geiger, the property manager of her retirement home, to perform the ceremony. And as Fideli explained what she wanted to do, Geiger jumped at the chance to honour the 77-year-old who always brought joy to other people. “I said, you know what, I’ve done everything else. Why not? I’m going to marry myself,” Fideli told Today. On the wedding day, she wore a white dress with long sleeves with floral detailing, as well as a silver belt and a veil with an embellished headband. 'I was really nervous, but then...' Describing her feelings on the wedding day, Dorothy Fideli said she was nervous but then was really happy. When the 77-year-old first had the idea of marrying herself, she thought it might be “just one of my things that I normally do” to uplift other people in her retirement home. "I do some crazy things around here just to make people laugh. When I see them all down in the dumps, I go get one of my outfits on and dress up and come down, and they smile,” she told Today. During the wedding ceremony, Fideli held a white lily in her hand and used it as a metaphor for cultivating self-love. “I said, ‘Everybody takes this outside lily. And they live their life and they think they’re happy and everything’s going to be hunky-dory, but they don’t consider the inside, the little petals inside,” she said. Fidel got married once in 1965, but there's a catch Dorothy Fideli got married once in 1965 but never had a formal wedding. Fideli said she and her ex-husband exchanged vows at the justice of the peace and right after the ceremony, “he went to work and I went home.” “I wore a black dress, so I was doomed before I got started,” she added. The 77-year-old wished she could have a big wedding, but thought it was too late for her. But as the wedding happened, Fidel couldn't thank her daughter enough for making her dream come true. "This is the best thing that I’ve ever had, outside of having you kids. This is what I’ve always wanted and I’m so happy that you (the daughter) it to me," she further said. A group of primary school students in Australia's Melbourne was injured in a horrific school bus crash on Tuesday (May 16). According to a report by the news agency Associated Press on Wednesday, the school bus was carrying as many as 45 students after it was hit by a truck from behind and overturned. The police said that the accident happened at an intersection in Eynesbury. Seven students suffer serious injuries; 1 student loses entire arm A total of 21 students were taken to a hospital of which seven remain hospitalised with serious injuries. Addressing a press conference, Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne chief executive Bernadette McDonald said one of the students was in intensive care. McDonald pointed out the injured students range in age from 5 to 11 years old. “The children have suffered multiple and traumatic injuries including partial and complete amputations of arms, multiple crushing injuries, severe lacerations of the head and body, head injuries, glass shard injuries, and three patients are ... being monitored carefully in terms of spinal injuries,” the hospital official added. McDonald also said that one student lost an entire arm but did not elaborate on how many injured students underwent partial amputation. The accident on Tuesday happened when the students were returning to a nearby primary school after competing in an athletics event. The Country Fire Authority said on Wednesday that about six children were temporarily trapped in the wrecked bus, the Associated Press reported. Emergency crews entered the bus through a skylight in its roof, and the smashed-out windshield was used as the main emergency exit. Paramedics assessed dazed victims who didn’t appear to need hospitalisation, and the bus driver was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. Truck driver charged with dangerous driving The truck driver, a 49-year-old man, was charged with four counts of dangerous driving causing serious injury. He would appear before the Melbourne magistrates court via video link later on Wednesday, according to a report by The Guardian. Police also said that more charges could follow. In the notes to its FY23 preliminary results, Vodafone said, "The carrying value of the Group’s investment in VIL is €nil and the Group is recording no further share of losses in respect of VIL."

The Ukrainian military has said that a four-rotor commercial drone that sells over the counter for $300 can be modified to carry explosives that will destroy Russian tanks.

The Ukrainian military has said that a four-rotor commercial drone that sells over the counter for $300 can be modified to carry explosives that will destroy Russian tanks. Speaking to the news agency Reuters on Tuesday (May 16), a Ukrainian soldier, who uses the call sign Kakrurt, said, "Our team has done it many times. We have destroyed enemy tanks, heavy military equipment, personnel. It's a very effective gadget." Kakurt, who was earlier working as an IT programmer, fights for Ukraine's 35th Marine Brigade, which modifies commercially-available drones and uses them to attack Russian forces. Reuters reported that the brigade shared visuals of these drones flying into what they said were Russian trenches before detonating. ALSO READ | Putin eases citizenship process for foreigners fighting for Russia in Ukraine The brigade showed off small commercial drones with four rotors that buzzed around as they were flown by soldiers using handsets. Ukraine invested hugely in drone technology Kakrurt also told Reuters on Tuesday that Ukraine has invested hugely in drone technology, adding, "It's better to make effective use of technical resources instead of people. That's why the Ukrainian Armed Forces are developing very, very quickly in this direction." Earlier, the Ukrainian government said it was expanding its drone programme for both reconnaissance and attacking enemy targets to narrow the gap between its military capabilities and those of Russia. ALSO READ | Putin eases citizenship process for foreigners fighting for Russia in Ukraine Another soldier, with the call sign Reshik, predicted that Kyiv would make broad use of drones that fly to their target before detonating when it starts its counter-offensive in the coming weeks. "Kamikaze drones will play a huge role in the counteroffensive in attacking trenches where the enemy seeks shelter and in killing the enemy," Reshik said. "Our Mavic (type of drone) is in the air, we see a tank driving, we fit the armour-piercing explosive to this part and let it fly. When we see infantry we fit the drone with shrapnel explosives and we fly it. If it is a building, we also fit it with shrapnel explosive and we fly inside the building," he added. Shot down six Russian hypersonic missiles: Ukraine Ukraine claimed on Tuesday that it shot down six Russian Kinzhal missiles in a single night. In a statement, the defence ministry said, "A high-precision strike by the hypersonic Kinzhal missile hit a US-made Patriot anti-aircraft missile system in the city of Kyiv." The Kinzhal missiles have been touted by Russia as a next-generation hypersonic missile. When asked about Ukraine's claim, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu dismissed it. But his ministry said that a Kinzhal missile destroyed U.S.-built Patriot surface-to-air missile defence system. The Tungnath temple in Uttarakhand, which is the world's highest Shiva shrine, is tilting by around 6-10 degrees, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has found.

The Tungnath temple in Uttarakhand, which is the world's highest Shiva shrine, is tilting by around 6-10 degrees, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has found. According to a report in the Times of India on Wednesday (May 17), the temple is tilting by around five to six degrees, and the smaller structures in the complex by 10 degrees. Speaking to the Times of India, ASI officials said they apprised the central government about the findings, adding they suggested the shrine be included as a protected monument. On Tuesday, an official said the government began the process of declaring Tungnath temple as a monument of "national importance and issued a notification seeking objections from the public as a matter of procedure. ASI to find the root cause of the damage The ASI will find the root cause of the damage (to the temple) in case it can be repaired immediately. Manoj Kumar Saxena, the superintending archaeologist of ASI's Dehradun circle, said that a detailed work programme would be prepared after a thorough inspection of the shrine. The report said that ASI officials did not rule out the possibility of subsidence. Land subsidence has been a concerning issue in Uttarakhand in recent months. The officials said that if required, the foundation stone will be replaced after consulting experts. But for now, the ASI fixed glass scales on the walls of the main temple. The Tungnath temple comes under the administration of the Badri Kedar Temple Committee (BKTC). ASI official Saxena said a letter was sent to the BKTC in this regard, but the ASI was yet to receive a response. However, BKTC president Ajendra Ajay told the publication that the matter was discussed in a board meeting where the ASI's proposition was rejected. Ajay said that the BKTC is ready to take the ASI's assistance in restoring the temple to its original form "without handing it over to them." "We will inform them about our decision soon," Ajay added. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Share your stories and opinions with us here.
