The police officer who tasered Clare Nowland, a 95-year-old woman with dementia in Australia's New South Wales (NSW), has been suspended from duty with pay, the NSW police said.

The police officer who tasered Clare Nowland, a 95-year-old woman with dementia in Australia's New South Wales (NSW), has been suspended from duty with pay, the NSW police said. According to a report by SBS News on Tuesday (May 23), the officer, who has not been identified, joined the force 12 years ago and was removed from duty last Friday. NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said that she neither viewed the footage of the incident nor spoke to the suspended officer. Speaking to Seven's Sunrise program, Commissioner Webb said she would speak to the office at some point. "My concern at the moment is with the Nowland family. This is a terrible time for them," she added. Webb also ordered a review of police training, particularly focused on how to deal with people with dementia. "The role of a police officer seems to be growing wider and wider and we are expected to know everything about everything - and we are not experts on everything," the NSW police commissioner further said. What is the incident about? Last week, Clare Nowland was tasered by the police as she approached them using a walker and carrying a steak knife in a nursing home. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press, two officers went to Yallambee Lodge in Cooma after staff reported that Nowland took a serrated steak knife from the kitchen. The Yallambee Lodge specialises in residents with higher care needs including dementia. The 95-year-old sustained head injuries she fell back after being hit by the taser. Earlier, Police Assistant Commissioner Peter Cotter said that the officers with Nowland for several minutes and used the stun gun when she approached the doorway where the officers were standing. “At the time she was tasered, she was approaching police. But it is fair to say at a slow pace. She had a walking frame. But she had a knife. I can’t take it any further as to what was going through anyone’s mind, Cotter added. Nowland remains in critical condition As earlier reported, Clare Nowland is receiving end-of-life care in Cooma district hospital and continues to remain in critical condition. On Sunday, Nowland was surrounded by family and well-wishers who prayed for her well-being. Meanwhile, the NSW Greens and an independent MP called on the government to establish a parliamentary inquiry into NSW Police. The SBS News report said that Greens MP Sue Higginson would demand a fully independent probe and bring the issue to the floor of the NSW parliament later on Tuesday. The motion would also call for the bodycam footage of Nowland's tasering to be publicly released. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Former United States president Donald Trump's company Trump Media has filed a $3.78 billion defamation lawsuit against Washington Post (WaPo) for a report about the Truth Social platform.

Former United States president Donald Trump's company Trump Media has filed a $3.78 billion defamation lawsuit against Washington Post (WaPo) for a report about the Truth Social platform. According to a report by The Independent on Monday (May 22), the lawsuit filed in Florida's Sarasota County claimed that a May 13 report alleging the company might have committed securities fraud was false and defamatory, and posed an “existential threat”. The article titled- "Trust linked to porn-friendly bank could gain a stake in Trump’s Truth Social” alleged the company concealed key details about a proposed merger from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and shareholders, citing internal documents given by a whistleblower. According to the lawsuit, the Washington Post was on a years-long crusade to undermine Trump Media. The lawsuit claimed that the clickbait headline of the report "immediately grabbed the common mind of readers, falsely insinuating that TMTG ( Trump Media & Technology Group) was involved in shady business dealings.” What does the WaPo report say? The Washington Post report has cast aspersions on Trump Media's business practices, saying the company failed to disclose investments to the SEC multiple times. “[TMTG] borrowed money from a bank best known for servicing adult entertainment, pledged a stake in the company for the loan and didn’t tell the SEC,” the WaPo report said. The source of the report was Will Wilkerson, a former employee of Trump media. "WaPo has been on a years-long crusade against TMTG characterized by the concealment of relevant information in its possession—a bitterly ironic truth for a publication whose motto is ‘Democracy Dies in Darkness,’" the court filing said and pointed out that Wilkerson knew that Washington Post published fake stories about TMTG, its CEO, Devin Nunes and Donald Trump, Fox News reported. "Wilkerson contacted WaPo with a salacious story about a porn-friendly bank and securities fraud. Through a series of meetings and conversations with Wilkerson and his lawyers, WaPo undertook with Wilkerson to publish agreed false and defamatory statements to injure TMTG," the court filing added. Trump Media files $3.78 billion defamation lawsuit against Washington Post: Reports

The Portuguese police, with the help of German police, on Tuesday (May 23) began searches near the Algarve reservoir where British girl Madeleine McCann disappeared in 2007 when she was three years old.

The Portuguese police, with the help of German police, on Tuesday (May 23) began searches near the Algarve reservoir where British girl Madeleine McCann disappeared in 2007 when she was three years old. According to a report by news agency Reuters, fire brigade members deployed a dinghy boat, while police officers combed the area surrounding the reservoir, located 52 kilometres from the resort of Praia da Luz where McCann disappeared. Speaking to Reuters, a source familiar with the investigation said the operation in the Silves municipality was being carried out at the request of German authorities. Another source said the Portuguese police had little hope of the search providing any breakthrough in the case. Tuesday's search is the first development in the case after last year's move by German prosecutors, who formally identified German man Christian Brueckner as an official suspect in McCann's disappearance. Who happened to Madeleine McCann? On May 3, 2007, Madeleine McCann disappeared from her bedroom in the apartment her family was staying in the Praia da Luz resort while her parents ate with friends at a nearby restaurant. The apartment was broken into while Madeleine and her twin-baby sibling were asleep. Local police concluded it was a kidnapping. The family expressed concerns at what they called a slow initial police response and a failure to secure the crime scene. McCann's disappearance drew global attention, with football stars David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo among those joining appeals for information. The timeline of investigation An early investigation by the Portugal police led to no major leads and the investigators turned their attention to McCann's parents - Gerry and Kate. In 2007, Gerry and Kate were questioned by police as formal suspects. But nearly a year later, the police dropped their probe due to lack of evidence and cleared the parents of any involvement, Reuters reported. The couple and the friends with them on the night the toddler went missing successfully sued many British tabloids for libel for suggesting they were involved in their daughter’s disappearance. In 2015, a court in Portugal ordered a former investigator involved in the initial inquiry to pay Gerry and Kate damages for alleging in a book that their daughter died in an accident and the parents had covered it up. Reuters further reported that a British man, whose mother lived close to the McCanns, won libel damages from British media after he was accused of being involved in the abduction. In 2011, then-British Prime Minister David Cameron ordered a review by London police after being contacted by the toddler's family. The following year, detectives said they had identified 195 "investigative opportunities" and in 2013 the police began their investigation, saying they had identified 38 potential suspects. Later that year, they released an e-fit image of many men. Portuguese prosecutors ordered the case to be reopened by local police. The new inquiry led Portuguese police to interview four suspects, but they were cleared of any involvement, and a search by British detectives of wasteland near the resort also failed to provide a breakthrough. Later, detectives suggested Madeleine might have been one of the victims of a series of sexual assaults on British children in Portugal between 2004 and 2010. Who is the German suspect? Nearly three years back, British and German police identified a 43-year-old German man as a suspect. Christian Brueckner lived in the Algarve region from 1995 and 2007 and burgled hotels and holiday flats as well as traded drugs. He was jailed for seven years in 2019 for raping and robbing a 72-year-old American woman in her home. In April 2022, he was identified as an official suspect in Madeleine's disappearance but has not been charged with any crime relating to her. In April, a court in the German city of Braunschweig threw out unrelated rape and sexual offences against Brueckner. Madeleine McCann case: Portugal cops search dam for toddler's remains, 16 yrs after disappearance

Senior Russian diplomats warned on Monday (May 22) that the transfer of F-16 jets to Ukraine would raise the question of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's (NATO) role in the war and would not undermine Moscow's military goals.

Senior Russian diplomats warned on Monday (May 22) that the transfer of F-16 jets to Ukraine would raise the question of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's (NATO) role in the war and would not undermine Moscow's military goals. For months, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been calling on Western allies to supply advanced fighter jets to help repel the Russian offensive. Last Friday (May 19), United States President Joe Biden endorsed training programmes for Ukrainian pilots on F-16s. Zelensky assured Biden that these aircraft would not be used to go into Russian territory. Taking to Telegram on Monday, Russia's ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov said that there is no infrastructure of F-16s in Ukraine and the needed number of pilots and maintenance personnel is not there either. ALSO READ | Belgorod governor claims Ukraine shelled Russia's border region "What will happen if American fighters take off from NATO airfields, controlled by foreign 'volunteers'?" Antonov questioned. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, meanwhile, told state-owned news agency RIA that any transfer of US jets to Ukraine would be pointless and stupid. The 'international fighter jet' coalition for Ukraine Last week, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his Dutch counterpart Mark Rutte agreed to build an international coalition to help procure F-16 jets for Ukraine. According to a Downing Street spokesperson, Sunak and Rutte would work to build an "international coalition to provide Ukraine with combat air capabilities, supporting with everything from training to procuring F-16 jets," The Guardian reported on May 16. On May 19, Denmark and Portugal said that they would join this coalition. The US also joined the coalition, with Ukrainian President Zelensky thanking Joe Biden and Dutch Defence Minister Kajsa Ollengren tweeting, "We welcome the upcoming approval by the United States of the training of Ukrainian pilots on F-16 fighter jets. Together with our close allies Denmark, Belgium and the UK, we are working on the modalities. We stand ready to support Ukraine on this." On Tuesday, Germany said that it was looking into options to support the coalition. However, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said that any contribution by Berlin could be minor only as Germany itself does not own the US-built jet. Till now, the US has not committed to providing aircraft directly but only promised to train Ukrainian pilots. Similarly, the UK has only agreed to train pilots. Portugal too ruled out the possibility of supplying Ukraine with F16s but confirmed its readiness to participate in training. What jets have been given to Ukraine so far? Reuters reported last week that no Western-designed jets were donated to war-torn Ukraine yet. Poland provided Ukraine with 14 MiG-29s and has said it will give more. But President Andrzej Duda said on May 16 that Poland has too few F-16 jets to be able to give any to Ukraine. Apart from Poland, Slovakia donated 13 Mig-29s in various states of airworthiness to the war-torn country. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Western US states said on Monday (May 22) that they reached an agreement to cut the amount of water they take from the Colorado River, which has been threatened by a quarter of a century of drought and worsening climate conditions.

Western US states said on Monday (May 22) that they reached an agreement to cut the amount of water they take from the Colorado River, which has been threatened by a quarter of a century of drought and worsening climate conditions. The river runs through seven American states and Mexico. According to a report by the news agency Reuters on Tuesday, Arizona, California and Nevada would reduce intake by 3 million acre-feet (3.7 billion cubic metres) through the end of 2026- an amount equal to 13% of their river allotment, under a deal brokered and announced by the Joe Biden administration. The federal government would pay a reported $1.2 billion to water districts, Native American Tribes and cities in California, Nevada and Arizona to use less water over the next three years. These three states make up the Lower Basin of the Colorado River while the Upper Basin includes Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. While the Upper Basin states draw their water directly from the river and its tributaries, the Lower Basin states depend on Lake Mead, the reservoir created by the Hoover Dam. Monday's agreement comes following years of bitter wrangling, with states refusing to give ground even as the watercourse has reached crisis point. The agreement also clears a major hurdle for reaching a three-year plan for distributing water rights starting in 2024. US President Biden hails agreement: 'Important step forward in....' US President Joe Biden hailed the agreement and said it was an important step forward in "our efforts to protect the stability of the Colorado River System in the face of climate change and historic drought conditions." California Governor Gavin Newsom also hailed the deal. In a statement, Newsom said, "The entire Western United States is on the frontlines of climate change -- we must work together to address this crisis and the weather extremes between drought and flood." "California has stepped up to make significant cuts to water usage and now, this historic partnership between California and other Lower Basin states will help maintain critical water supply for millions of Americans as we work together to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Colorado River System for decades to come," he added. What happens next? The seven American states must now go back on a longer-term deal starting in 2027, most likely for two decades, that must be reached without being able to count on rainy years or federal dollars, and with the effects of climate change looming, Reuters reported. For a long time, the Colorado River Compact has been problematic as it was agreed upon after an unusually wet period, misleading signatories into believing more water was available to them. The river has been further strained by rapid population growth and a drought that threatened to drain reservoir levels below the intake valves that deliver water downstream and cut off hydroelectric production. Social networking service Instagram was back up for most users after a technical issue disrupted services to thousands of people across the world. Speaking to the news agency Reuters on Sunday (May 21), a spokesperson from Meta Platforms Inc said, "Earlier today, a technical issue caused some people to have trouble accessing Instagram. We resolved the issue as quickly as possible for everyone who was impacted." On Twitter, several users complained about Instagram not working and later Instagram's PR team tweeted, " Instagram is back! Sorry for the trouble - we had a brief outage earlier and resolved the issue that caused it. Meta did not disclose how many people were affected by the outage. But outage tracking website Downdetector showed over 100,000 incidents in the United States, over 56,000 in Britain, and 24,000 incidents in Canada. At the peak of the outage, over 180,000 users reported issues with accessing Instagram. Instagram to release text-based app that would compete with Twitter The global outage on Sunday comes just days after it was reported that Instagram was planning to release a text-based app that would compete with Twitter. Citing sources, the news agency Bloomberg reported on Friday that Meta was testing the project with celebrities and influencers. According to one of the sources, the app was secretly available to select creators for months. Lia Haberman, who teaches social and influencer marketing at UCLA, published a screenshot of an early app description. Haberman said the text-based app would be separate from Instagram but would allow people to connect accounts, and might debut as soon as June. It may eventually be compatible with other Twitter competitor apps, including Mastodon, according to Haberman’s screenshot. “Historically, we know Meta likes to sample and recreate features from other apps and third-party tools based on what they anticipate being popular with their users," she further said, Bloomberg reported. Taiwan has been excluded from the World Health Organization's (WHO) annual assembly - the World Health Assembly (WHA) - following opposition from China, despite Taipei asserting that support was growing for its participation.

Taiwan has been excluded from the World Health Organization's (WHO) annual assembly - the World Health Assembly (WHA) - following opposition from China, despite Taipei asserting that support was growing for its participation. The WHA in Geneva decided not to extend Taiwan an invitation to the summit that started on Sunday (May 21) and will go on till May 30. According to a report by the news agency Reuters on Monday, China, as well as Pakistan, urged members to reject Taiwan's inclusion while eSwatini and the Marshall Islands spoke in favour. China welcomes WHO's decision The Chinese government welcomed the WHO's decision to exclude Taiwan from its annual assembly. In a statement, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said, "This fully shows that the one-China principle is the aspiration of the people and the trend of the times in the international community and cannot be challenged in any way." The ministry added that before the opening of the conference, nearly 100 countries expressed their adherence to the one-China principle and their opposition to Taiwan's participation in the assembly. "China also urges certain countries not to pretend to be confused, stop politicising the health issue, stop interfering in China's internal affairs under the pretext of the Taiwan issue, and stop the erroneous practice of using 'Taiwan to control China'," the ministry added. Exclusion poses significant threat to global health: Taiwan's health minister Taiwan's Health Minister Hsueh Jui-yuan slammed the WHO's decision by saying that his country's exclusion from the UN health agency's annual assembly posed a significant threat to global health. "Excluding Taiwan from WHO not only jeopardises the right to health of the 23.5 million people of Taiwan, it also seriously undermines WHO's efforts to achieve health for all," Jui-yuan said on Sunday at an event hosted by the Geneva Press Club, news agency AFP reported. Jui-yuan warned that leaving the self-ruled island out in the cold hampered the swift and efficient sharing of information that would be needed to prevent or more efficiently respond to the next pandemic threat. "I am afraid that Taiwan will become the gap of the next pandemic," the health minister added. The US mission in Geneva too criticised the WHO's decision by saying Taiwan's exclusion "undermines inclusive global public health cooperation led by WHO." Taiwan was expelled from the WHO in 1972, a year after it lost the "China" seat at the UN to the People's Republic of China. But Taiwan was allowed to attend the agency's top annual meetings between 2009 and 2016 as an observer when relations with China were warmer. However, it has been blocked from attending the annual assembly in recent years by China and the Chinese government staunchly opposed efforts to include Taiwan as a WHA observer.
