The United Nations warned on Sunday (Oct 29) that the civil order in war-torn Gaza was starting to collapse after thousands of people ransacked its food warehouses.

The United Nations warned on Sunday (Oct 29) that the civil order in war-torn Gaza was starting to collapse after thousands of people ransacked its food warehouses. According to a report by the news agency AFP, the UN relief agency for Palestinian refugees, also known as the UNRWA, said that wheat, flour, and other supplies had been looted from several of its warehouses. "Thousands of people broke into several UNRWA warehouses and distribution centres in the middle and southern areas of the Gaza Strip, taking wheat flour and other basic survival items like hygiene supplies," the UNRWA said. Click here to follow all updates on Israel-Hamas war "This is a worrying sign that civil order is starting to break down after three weeks of war and a tight siege," it added. The UN agency also said one of the warehouses in Deir al-Balah was storing supplies from convoys carrying humanitarian aid which started to cross into Gaza from Egypt on October 21. 'Aid coming to Gaza insufficient' After Hamas went on a rampage against Israel on October 7, the Israeli government imposed a total blockade on food, water, medicine, and fuel deliveries into Gaza. The first convoy of humanitarian aid entered Gaza only two weeks after the conflict began. Since then, the UNRWA said that 84 aid trucks crossed into Gaza but aid agencies say the numbers were far too low. Before the conflict, UN figures showed an average of 500 trucks a day entering Gaza. Humanitarian efforts to Gaza will expand: Israel On Sunday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) told civilians in Gaza to move south of the war-torn region where aid efforts would expand. "Civilians in northern Gaza and Gaza City should temporarily move south of Wadi Gaza to a safer area where they can receive water, food, and medicine," IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari said. "The humanitarian efforts to Gaza, led by Egypt and the United States, will be expanding," he added. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday (Oct 28) that Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip was a product of the West, adding that Israel could not take any steps without its support.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday (Oct 28) that Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip was a product of the West, adding that Israel could not take any steps without its support. Addressing a pro-Palestinian rally in Istanbul, President Erdogan called Israel an "occupier and invader." "Our hearts are wrenching for what is happening in Gaza," Erdogan said. "Gaza was an inseparable part of our homeland in the past," he also said, adding that Turkey would never allow another Gaza catastrophe. 'Israel is a war criminal' The Turkish president further sharpened his attack on the West by saying that Western countries were trying to legitimise the murders of women and children. Erdogan also called Israel a war criminal. "We will introduce Israel as a war criminal. But Western leaders are not responding- not even calling for a ceasefire. I want to ask how many women, how many children are to die further," he said at the rally. Erdogan called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a terrorist and that Hamas was not a terrorist outfit. Click here to follow LIVE updates on the Israel-Hamas war Turkey has condemned Israeli civilian deaths caused by Hamas's October 7 rampage through southern Israel, but Erdogan this week called the militant group Palestinian "freedom fighters". He also criticised some Western nations' unconditional support for Jerusalem, drawing sharp rebukes from Italy and Israel. "All the Western countries are giving unconditional support to the attacks rather than calling Israel to return to common sense as if they have agreed to say the same thing," Erdogan said during a speech at the presidential palace on Thursday. For the European Commission to be able to call for a ceasefire - let them give the number - how many more children need to die? For the United Nations Security Council to take action, how many more tonnes of bombs need to fall on Gaza? For Western institutions to say 'stop' to the massacre, how many more women, civilians and elderly need to lose their lives?" he added. UN warns of 'possibly catastrophic consequences' Volker Turk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, on Saturday warned of "possibly catastrophic consequences" of large-scale ground operations in Gaza. "Given the manner in which military operations have been conducted until now, in the context of the 56-year-old occupation, I am raising alarm about the possibly catastrophic consequences of large-scale ground operations in Gaza and the potential for thousands more civilians to die," Turk said in a statement, adding continued violence was not the answer. Israel-Hamas war: Erdogan addresses huge pro-Palestine rally, blames West for massacre in Gaza

Police in the US state of Maine said on Saturday (Oct 28) that the shooter who killed 18 people at a bar and a bowling alley in Lewiston on Wednesday and later died by suicide, suffered from serious mental health issues.

Police in the US state of Maine said on Saturday (Oct 28) that the shooter who killed 18 people at a bar and a bowling alley in Lewiston on Wednesday and later died by suicide, suffered from serious mental health issues. Speaking to reporters, Maine public safety commissioner Mike Sauschuck said that the body of 40-year-old Robert Card, who was an army reservist, was discovered on Friday inside a tractor-trailer near a recycling centre where he used to work. Sauschuck said that Card had reportedly been hearing voices and suffering from paranoia. "Clearly, there's a mental health component to this," he told reporters. An investigation is ongoing to determine the motive behind the massacre. Sauschuck also said that investigators found a note that Card left to a loved one which had a password to his phone and bank account information. It had the tone of a suicide letter, he added. Despite the clear mental health issues and a reportedly recent psychiatric evaluation undergone by Card, "a background check is not going to ping that this individual was prohibited," Sauschuck added. 'Shooter's kin have been incredibly cooperative' Sauschuck further told reporters that Card's family had been incredibly cooperative with the investigation, saying they were among the first people to call the police and identify the suspect as their loved one. Lewiston finally breathed a sigh of relief with businesses beginning to open and people appearing on the streets Saturday, the news agency AFP reported. The 18 victims ranged from a husband and wife in their 70s to a 14-year-old boy killed alongside his father. Thirteen people were wounded in Wednesday's shooting. Sauschuk also said during the press conference that three people were still in critical condition. This was one of the deadliest shootings in the US since 2017, when a gunman opened fire on a crowded music festival in Las Vegas, killing 60 people. One police officer died and a dozen others were injured after supporters of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) clashed with police during an anti-government rally in the capital city of Dhaka, the news agency Associated Press reported on Saturday (Oct 28).

One police officer died and a dozen others were injured after supporters of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) clashed with police during an anti-government rally in the capital city of Dhaka, the news agency Associated Press reported on Saturday (Oct 28). The rally was held to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the transfer of power to a non-partisan caretaker government to oversee next year's general elections. Citing local media and witnesses, the Associated Press report said that the violence broke out at Dhaka's Kakrail area when BNP activists led by former PM Khaleda Zia allegedly attacked a bus carrying the ruling Awami League’s members to a separate rally a few blocks away. Also read: Zia must go to prison first before leaving for life-saving treatment abroad, says PM Hasina Speaking to the news agency, Dhaka police spokesperson Faruk Hossain said that violence continued in at least 10 spots in the city, where security forces confronted opposition activists who attacked them, vandalised and torched vehicles. BNP accuses security forces of ruining 'peaceful rally' BNP's Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir accused security forces of ruining a "peaceful rally" and announced general strikes across Bangladesh on Sunday. Speaking to the Associated Press, BNP spokesperson Zahiruddin Swapan said that security forces attacked party activists mercilessly. Earlier, Prime Minister Hasina's party - the Awami League - warned that any attempt to trigger violence would be met with force. Addressing a huge rally in Chattogram's district Anwara, Hasina said that the BNP was attempting to derail her government's development agenda. “Today BNP (Zia’s party) wants to oust the government. They are giving various types of threats to launch a movement ... No threat will work,” Hasina said after she inaugurated a Chinese-built underwater tunnel. The opposition is leaving no stone unturned to dethrone Hasina as Bangladesh's 12th national election is expected to be held in January next year. Earlier, BNP's Secretary General Alamgir said that the party would continue to push for the resignation of Hasina’s administration and the installation of a caretaker government. “We don’t trust this government. They must go first to hold a free and fair election. Otherwise, they would rig the election,” he said. Bangladesh: One cop dead, dozens injured after oppn activists clash with police during anti-govt rally

Taiwan is set to host the presidential election on January 13 next year. The election would help set the course for the relations between the United States and China for the years to come.

Taiwan is set to host the presidential election on January 13 next year. The election would help set the course for the relations between the United States and China for the years to come. Their choice is between a ruling party determined to maintain Taiwan's political independence and an opposition that sees closer ties with China as the only viable path. In the run-up to the election, China stepped up military and political pressure to assert its claim of sovereignty. Elections in Taiwan have usually been dominated by voters' views on how the island should handle relations with China, a report by the news agency Bloomberg said in April. This election is also a litmus test of how voters are nervous about the current state of affairs in Taiwan and where they might lead. The differing views on Taiwan Relations between the US and China have been strained for years over issues ranging from technology to human rights, and Taiwan is a key flashpoint. Both countries have differing views on Taiwan. The island's current status has been in dispute since the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949. Since then, China has claimed sovereignty over Taiwan, even though the island established a democracy. China sees the US as abrogating its “One China policy" in which Washington recognised the Beijing-based People’s Republic as the “sole legal government of China” and ended formal diplomatic recognition of Taiwan — without clarifying America's position on the island’s sovereignty, Bloomberg reported. Though US officials said that there is no change in the policy, President Joe Biden repeatedly said that his government would come to Taiwan’s defence if attacked. The next president of Taiwan will serve till 2027. By this year, the US estimates China wants its military to be capable of undertaking an attack on Taiwan. Ely Ratner, who is Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs in the Biden administration, said on September 19 that the US was strengthening deterrence across the Taiwan Strait. Ratner said that Washington remained committed to the One China policy, which has helped preserve peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait for more than four decades. However, he pointed out that China was pushing the envelope by waging a campaign of military, diplomatic and economic pressure against Taiwan. The top official also warned that a major conflict in the strait "would result in thousands of casualties and jeopardise more than $2 trillion in global economic activity, igniting a global economic depression." In August last year, then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei which outraged China. In response, China launched one of the biggest military drills ever seen around the island. In April this year, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen visited the US, which sparked shorter but intense military drills from China. The top contenders and their stand on China The top contenders for this year's presidential election in Taiwan are current Vice President William Lai, Hou Yu-Ih, Ko Wen-Je and Terry Gou. The contenders have called for talks with China. Vice President Lai, a leader of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), has repeatedly called for talks with China but has been rebuffed as Beijing views him as a separatist. "We don't want to be enemies, we can be friends. And we would love to see China enjoy democracy and freedom – just like us," Lai, who is leading the opinion poll, said in August. "However, until China renounces the use of force against Taiwan, we must strengthen our military capacity," he added. Hou Yu-Ih, a leader of Taiwan's main opposition party Kuomintang (KMT) also said he would restart talks with China. The KMT traditionally favours close ties with China but strongly denies being pro-Beijing. Ko Wen-Je is a leader of the Taiwan People's Party. A former Taipei mayor, Ko is catching up quickly with Lai in the frontrunner race. On Tuesday (Oct 24), Ko said that China should propose a new framework for engagement with Taiwan and explain what Beijing has to offer. Meanwhile, Terry Gou, the billionaire founder of major Apple supplier Foxconn, is running as an independent candidate. Gou no longer runs Foxconn and has accused the DPP of taking Taiwan to the brink of war with China by its hostile policies and that only he, with his extensive business and personal contacts in China and the US, can maintain peace. Foxconn made headlines last week after it was subjected to tax inspections by Chinese authorities. On Tuesday, Vice President Lai hit out at China over the Foxconn probe and said Beijing should cherish Taiwanese companies and not put pressure on them during an election. "During an election, China does not need to put pressure on Taiwanese companies, demanding they declare a position, or even that they directly support a candidate they prefer," Lai said. He warned that Taiwanese companies will lose their confidence in China and if they feel scared will shift production elsewhere. Ko Wen-Je, meanwhile, said that China should explain the probe, adding the biggest problem here was that Taiwan had no way to communicate with the mainland on behalf of Taiwanese companies. Families of Israeli hostages kidnapped by Hamas militants on Saturday (Oct 28) demanded an explanation from the Israeli government about the fate of their loved ones after the army intensified strikes on the Palestinian territory.

Families of Israeli hostages kidnapped by Hamas militants on Saturday (Oct 28) demanded an explanation from the Israeli government about the fate of their loved ones after the army intensified strikes on the Palestinian territory. In a statement, the Hostages and Missing Families Forum said that relatives were angry over the "absolute uncertainty regarding the fate of the hostages held (in Gaza), who were also subject to the heavy bombings". "None of the war cabinet bothered to meet with the families to explain one thing -- whether the ground operation endangers the well-being of the 229 hostages in Gaza," the statement said. "The families are worried about the fate of their loved ones and are waiting for an explanation. Every minute feels like eternity," it added. Missing kin's forum seeks meeting with Israeli govt Since Hamas launched an unprecedented attack against Israel on October 7, more than 200 people were taken as hostages, the Israeli military claimed. However, the number could be higher. The hostages are believed to be hidden in the Gaza Strip, possibly in tunnels which Hamas has built, a report by the news agency Reuters said on Saturday. Click here to follow LIVE updates on the Israel-Hamas war The Hostages and Missing Families Forum sought an immediate meeting with Israeli ministers. The forum's statement came two days after Israel said that more than half of the hostages held by Hamas had foreign passports from 25 countries. Many were believed to have had dual Israeli nationality. Israel steps up ground invasion in Gaza On Saturday, Israel stepped up ground operations inside Gaza amid internet and power blackouts in the war-torn region. The military said that it struck 150 underground targets across Gaza. Further details about this offensive were not yet known. Earlier, military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said that Israel would allow trucks carrying food, water and medicine to enter Gaza on Saturday, indicating that bombing might pause, at least in the area of its border with Egypt where small amounts of aid have been arriving. "As for the humanitarian aspect, for the citizens of Gaza who moved to the south, we are expanding the humanitarian efforts. We will allow more trucks in carrying food, water, and medicine; and whoever is in this area, which is the safe area, will get food, water, and medicine," Hagari said. Israel-Hamas war: Kin of Israeli hostages demand explanation about fate of their loved ones

Russia appears to have bypassed Western sanctions and is ramping up the production of Kinzhal (Dagger) hypersonic missiles with the help of European firms, a report by The Times said on Thursday (Oct 26), citing independent investigators. Rostec, which is the state-owned Russian defence conglomerate, claimed that it ramped up the production of ammunition by 50-fold since the war in Ukraine began, despite Western sanctions, the report said.

Rostec added that it drastically increased the production rate of Dagger missiles. The Times report said KBM is the company that produces Daggers and other precision weapons for Rostec. KBM is headed by Sergei Pitikov whose family has been living in Sweden in a property that is suspected to have been purchased with profits made by the company.

Swedish public registers showed that over the last two years, Pitikov's daughter Maya bought a $528,265 (€500,000) house near Malmo and a Tesla, while she and her partner declared a combined pre-tax income of less than $84,517 (€80,000) a year.

Citing a Russian media outlet, The Times report said that both Rostec and KBM have been sanctioned by the United States and Britain. However, procurement and shipping documents showed that their Russian subcontractors continued to buy tools, machinery etc. from European as well as American firms.

It has been alleged that Osctec, a company based in Moscow, supplied KBM with thermal and cooling chambers. These chambers were shipped by Intertrans SP. ZO.O from Poland, The Times report said.

KEB, a company in Germany, allegedly supplied cables and turning machines to KBM through its Russian partner KEB-Rus. Another Russian contractor of Sergei Pitikov's company, Sonatec, is said to be a supplier of precision machine tools that can be used in the production of missile components. One of the suppliers of Sonatec includes Aberlink, a British company.

Speaking to the publication, Aberlink said it ceased trading with Sonatec in 2021 and that its products could be used for civilian as well as military use.

"For commercial and moral reasons no servicing or parts have been supplied over the past two years," Marcus Eales, Aberlink’s owner and director, said.

Incoming Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu said on Friday (Oct 27) that his country intends to be fully independent and will ask Indian troops stationed on the Island to leave.

Incoming Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu said on Friday (Oct 27) that his country intends to be fully independent and will ask Indian troops stationed on the Island to leave. Speaking to the news agency Bloomberg, Muizzu said, "It happens to be Indian foreign military presence here.” Muizzu added that he had already begun negotiations with New Delhi on removing its military presence, calling those talks “very successful already.” “We want a bilateral relationship that’s mutually beneficial,” he said and pointed out that Indian soldiers will not be replaced by troops from other countries 'Will not allow any other country to bring their troops here' Around 70 Indian military personnel have been maintaining New Delhi-sponsored radar stations and surveillance aircraft in Maldives. Muizzu, who is backed by a coalition known to be close to China, also told Bloomberg that the removal of Indian military personnel in no way indicated that he was going to allow China or "any other country to bring their military troops here." “We want assistance, cooperation with all the countries,” Muizzu added. His victory in the recently concluded election extends the tug-of-war between India and China for influence over the Indian Ocean. Successive governments have tilted either toward India or China. The Indian government said last week that it intends to work with the new Maldives government. “We look forward to constructively engaging with the incoming administration and discussing ways to enhance our relationship further,” Indian foreign ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi told reporters. In the last five years, New Delhi carried out 500 medical evacuations saving 523 Maldivian lives, Bagchi added, reiterating India’s assistance to the island.
