French military intelligence has indicated that the most likely cause of the deadly blast at the al-Ahli hospital in Gaza which allegedly killed hundreds on Tuesday was a Palestinian rocket and not an Israeli airstrike. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press, a senior military official said on Friday (Oct 20) that this Palestinian rocket carried an explosive charge of about five kilogrammes and possibly misfired. The official, who chose to remain anonymous, said that several rockets in Hamas' arsenal carry explosive charges of about that weight including an Iranian-made rocket and another that is Palestinian-made. Click here to follow LIVE updates on the Israel-Hamas war None of their intelligence pointed to an Israeli strike, the official added. The intelligence assessment was based on classified information, satellite imagery, intelligence shared by other countries, and open-source information, as per the official. Israel denies involvement in hospital blast Israel has denied involvement in the hospital blast and released a live video, audio, and other evidence it said showed that the blast was caused by a rocket misfired by Islamic Jihad, another Palestinian militant group. Islamic Jihad has denied responsibility for the explosion, the Associated Press report said. Gaza officials had blamed an Israeli airstrike for the explosion. The officials said that the hospital housed hundreds of wounded and sick people, and civilians who had sought refuge. The death toll also remains in dispute. Within just over an hour of the blast, the Hamas-run Health Ministry said 500 had died. It then revised that number slightly to 471 on Wednesday, without giving details of the dead. Israel, meanwhile said that the toll was inflated. The French military intelligence official also said on Friday, “We don’t see at all that a rocket that size could have produced 471 dead. It is not possible.” (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Share your stories and opinions with us here.

Gaza hospital strike: French intelligence points at Palestinian rocket as cause of blast

Japan's competition watchdog said on Monday (Oct 23) that it was investigating Google for a possible breach of antimonopoly laws in web search services. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the Japan Fair Trade Commission said it was probing whether Google violated Japan's Antimonopoly Act by returning part of its revenue to Android smartphone makers on the condition that they do not install rival search engines.

A JFTC official told reporters that the commission was also investigating Google's practice of making Android phone makers install its "Google Search" and "Google Chrome" browser applications with the "Google Play" app.

The official said that there was suspicion that with these steps, Google was excluding competitors' business activity and restricting its business partners' activity in the search services market. The issue was not that the American tech giant's service was widely used, it was about fair competition.&nbsp;

Japan has joined European authorities and other major economies in launching an investigation against Google. In January, the United States sued the tech giant for monopolising digital advertising technologies.&nbsp;

"Over the past 15 years, Google has engaged in a course of anticompetitive and exclusionary conduct that consisted of neutralizing or eliminating ad tech competitors through acquisitions; wielding its dominance across digital advertising markets to force more publishers and advertisers to use its products; and thwarting the ability to use competing products," the Justice Department said in a statement.&nbsp;

"In doing so, Google cemented its dominance in tools relied on by website publishers and online advertisers, as well as the digital advertising exchange that runs ad auctions," it added.&nbsp;

Scientists have made the biggest breakthrough in the treatment of cervical cancer that could cut deaths by 35 per cent, British media reported on Monday (Oct 23). According to a report by Sky News, scientists have said that already-available drugs could cause a 35 per cent reduction in deaths caused by this particular cancer.&nbsp;

Scientists from University College London's (UCL) Cancer Institute and University College Hospital (UCLH) said that a short course of induction chemotherapy (IC) before standard treatment for cervical cancer, chemoradiation (CRT), could reduce rates of relapse and death significantly.

The trial found that after five years, 80 per cent of women with cancer who received IC and CRT were alive and 73 per cent had not seen it return or spread. The trial also found that in the regular treatment group, 72 per cent of those with cancer were alive and 64% had not seen it return or spread.

The trial, which took place for 10 years involved 500 patients across the United Kingdom (UK), India, Mexico, Italy and Brazil. The preliminary results were presented at the European Society for Medical Oncology congress.

Dr Mary McCormack, the lead investigator of the trial, said this was the biggest improvement in the outcome in cervical cancer in more than two decades. CRT had been the standard treatment for this type of cancer, but despite improvements in radiation therapy techniques, cancer returns in up to 30% of cases.

When cancer starts in the cervix, it is called cervical cancer. The US CDC has said when cervical cancer is found early, it is highly treatable and associated with long survival and good quality of life.

"Long-lasting infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) is the main cause of cervical cancer," the CDC adds.

Ukrainians are preparing firewood and candles to brace for a winter of Russian strikes on the energy grid. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press on Monday (Oct 23), people have been purchasing candles, batteries, flashlights, and portable lanterns and stocking up on compact gas canisters. Last winter, was the most challenging in the history of Ukraine's energy system, with more than 1,200 missiles and drones fired by Russians at power plants, Ukrainian state-owned grid operator, Ukrenergo said. Russian strikes impacted almost half of the country's energy capacity. People were forced to endure hours without electricity and water during the coldest months. 'Russians will start bombing again' “Those were dark days. I didn’t want anything. I just wanted to pack my things and go abroad,” Yarema, 48, told the Associated Press, adding she stayed back as her son insisted. Yarema and her son live in trailers that were set up in their backyard after the early days of the war last year destroyed their house in Moshchun. “I have a feeling that when the cold sets in, they’ll start bombing again,” she told the news agency. Last winter, millions of people across Ukraine had to learn to work, live, and cover their basic needs without relying on electricity. US allocates millions for Ukraine's energy equipment Following a lull of six months, the energy system sustained its first attack of the season last month, leading to damage to facilities in the central and western regions, according to Ukrenergo. Recently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky committed to substantially enhancing air defence systems, which already have demonstrated greater effectiveness than the previous year. “Everyone must play their part in defensive efforts to ensure that Russian aggression does not halt Ukraine this winter. Just as on the battlefield, in all areas, we must be resilient and strong,” President Zelensky said. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal recently announced that the United States allocated $522 million for energy equipment and the protection of Ukraine’s infrastructure. DTEK, a private energy producer in the country, has spent the last seven months restoring its damaged infrastructure and fortifying the protection of its equipment for the upcoming winter. DTEK's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Maxim Timchenko said that the company has invested $550 million to prepare for this winter, adding it lost a lot of money due to last year's disruptions caused by Russian attacks. “We learned our lessons,” Timchenko said. Teams of police and fire service were deployed for rescue operations. Rahman said that the accident took place at around 4 pm (10 GMT). Citing witnesses, a report by the Dhaka Tribune said that many people were trapped under the train, with most of them lying beneath damaged coaches. Bhairab's station master told the publication that Rail connectivity from Dhaka to Chittagong, Sylhet and Kishoreganj had been suspended. A report by The Daily Star said that the country's railway board suspended the locomaster, assistant locomaster, and guard of the freight train involved in the collision. Bangladesh Railway's Director General Quamrul Islam told The Daily Star that the board formed two separate committees to investigate the incident. Train accidents are common in Bangladesh and are often caused by poor signalling, negligence, old tracks or other rundown infrastructure. Bangladesh: Passenger and freight trains collide; 17 dead, over 100 injured, toll likely to go up

US oil giant Chevron said on Monday (Oct 23) that it agreed to buy its competitor Hess Corp for $53 billion in stock. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, this is the second proposed mega-merger among the biggest American oil players following Exxon Mobil's bid for $60 billion for Pioneer Natural Resources earlier this month.&nbsp;

The report said that the deal signals Chevron's plans to continue boosting investments in fossil fuels as the oil demand remains strong and big producers use acquisitions to replenish their inventory after years of under-investment.&nbsp;

Chevron has offered 1.025 of its shares for each Hess share held, or $171 per share, implying a premium of about 4.9% to the stock's last close.

Reuters reported on Monday that Chevron's shares were trading 3% lower premarket. RBC analysts said that they were surprised by the deal's timing and expected the company to bide its time after Exxon's deal for Pioneer.

Hess Corp's chairperson John Hess is expected to join Chevron's board of directors once the deal closes in the first half of 2024. The combined venture is expected to grow production and free cash flow faster and for longer than Chevron's current five-year guidance.&nbsp;

The (Chevron) deal has raised the competition between Chevron, the number 2 oil and gas producer behind Exxon, putting it in direct competition with its biggest rival to develop drilling in Guyana.

Guyana, a country in South America, has become a major oil producer in the region following huge discoveries in recent years. Exxon and partners Hess and China's CNOOC are the only active producers in the country.&nbsp;

The United States on Sunday (Oct 22) urged its citizens not to travel to Iraq due to terrorism, kidnapping, armed conflict, civil unrest, and Mission Iraq’s limited capacity to provide support to citizens. Issuing a travel advisory, the Department of State said that on Friday, it ordered the departure of eligible family members and non-emergency government personnel from the embassy due to increased security threats against Washington's government personnel and interests.

"US citizens in Iraq face high risks to their safety and security, including the potential for violence and kidnapping. Terrorist and insurgent groups regularly attack Iraqi security forces and civilians. Anti-US militias threaten US citizens and international companies throughout Iraq," the advisory said.

"Do not travel near Iraq’s northern borders due to the continued threat of attacks by terrorist groups, armed conflict, aerial bombardment, and civil unrest. US citizens should especially avoid areas near armed groups in northern Iraq, which have been targeted with aerial strikes by neighbouring countries’ militaries," it added.&nbsp;

The department said that due to security concerns, US government personnel in Baghdad were instructed not to use the Baghdad International Airport.&nbsp;

"Due to risks to civil aviation operating in the Baghdad Flight Information Region, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has extended for an additional two years its Special Federal Aviation Regulation (SFAR) prohibiting certain flights at altitudes below 32,000 feet," it said.

In case American citizens were planning to travel to Iraq, they should establish their own personal security plan, discuss a plan with loved ones and share important documents, login information, and points of contact with them. Such citizens should also visit the department's website for Travel to High-Risk Areas.

US orders citizens not to travel to Iraq due to terrorism, armed conflict

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday (Oct 22) warned Hezbollah that the Lebanese militant group would make "the mistake of its life" if it started a war with Israel. Prime Minister Netanyahu visited troops on the Lebanese border in northern Israel where mounting artillery exchanges have heightened fears of a new war.&nbsp;

Addressing troops, Netanyahu said that in the event of scaled-up hostilities, Hezbollah "will make the mistake of its life. We will strike it with a force it cannot even imagine, and the significance for it and the state of Lebanon will be devastating."

<h2>'Hezbollah playing a very dangerous game'</h2>

The prime minister's warning comes after the Israeli army warned Hezbollah that its escalating attacks on Israel risked dragging Lebanon into a war. "Hezbollah... is dragging Lebanon into a war that it will gain nothing from, but stands to lose a lot," Israeli army spokesman Jonathan Conricus said.&nbsp;

He said that the militant group was playing a very dangerous game, and escalating the situation.

The ongoing war between Israel and Hamas (which started on October 7) has spread to Lebanon. Hezbollah is allied with Hamas and has exchanged fire with Israeli forces across its northern border, amid growing concerns that Hezbollah intends to open another front against Israel in support of Hamas in the south.&nbsp;

More than 4,600 people have been killed in Gaza while 1,400 people have been killed on the Israeli side as the conflict escalates.

On Sunday, the Israeli military said that&nbsp;one of its tanks accidentally hit an Egyptian position near the border with the Gaza Strip.

"The incident is being investigated and the details are under review. The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) expresses sorrow regarding the incident," the military said in a statement, giving no further details.

South Korean entrepreneur Zena Chung has been appointed as an economic and trade adviser for the Gyeongsangbuk-do province. According to a report published in the Asian Community News on October 5, this responsibility was bestowed upon Chung by Gyeongsangbuk-do's Governor Lee Cheol-woo.

Chung's appointment as an adviser marks significance for India as the province signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh in May. What Chung plans to focus on as province adviser? Speaking to the Asian Community News, Chung said that as an adviser, she would promote Ayurveda medication development between India and South Korea, help more Indian skilled workforce to come to work in Gyeongsangbuk-do to address manpower shortages, and also help more South Korean small medium-sized companies (SMEs) to invest in Uttar Pradesh and vice-versa. Chung has also proposed establishing an India business office in Gyeongsangbuk-do, which will attract not only more foreign students (including Indians) who want to study in the country, but also serve as an opportunity for SMEs (in South Korea) who want to advance into India, or conversely, Indian companies that want to advance into Korea, the report said. Also read: South Korean entrepreneur Zena Chung awarded with country's prestigious Grand Prize She also told Governor Lee Cheol-woo and Vice-Governor for Economic Affairs Lee Dal Hee that the establishment of the India business office would serve as a great bridge for many private universities in the country which are facing a serious crisis because of low-birth rate. The office would also help small and medium-sized businesses, which are at a crossroads between life and death due to rising labour costs nationwide, the report added. "So many private universities are in strong demand to fill the shortages of domestic students with foreign students to maintain the universities here. So is the fate of most of the private universities in other provinces of Korea. Following this, the Gyeongsangbuk-do government is taking many measures to drive more foreign and Indian students to study in Gyeongsangbuk-do," Chung told the publication. Commenting on employment opportunities for Indian students, she said that following the completion of courses, universities in Gyeongsangbuk-do would help them find jobs in the province and even open opportunities where they can apply for permanent resident status after their employment with local companies (in the province). Zena Chung awarded with country's prestigious Grand Prize Recently, Chung, who is president of the Indo-Korea Business Culture Centre, was awarded the Grand Prize for the 100 most proud Koreans for this year. She received the award for "contributing to publicising the excellence of Korean culture and art at home and abroad," a statement said. Chung said she wants to promote South Korea's excellent cultural and artistic qualities in other countries around the world through cultural and art exchanges and cooperation between the federal, local, and provincial governments, and overseas companies. Russian forces have foiled several attempts by Ukrainian units to cross the Dnipro River in the southern&nbsp;Kherson&nbsp;region over the past day, Russia's defence ministry said on Sunday.

According to the ministry, Ukrainian "sabotage and reconnaissance" teams were stopped while trying to cross the river near the villages of Pridniprovske, Tiahynka and Krynky.

Russia also said it had destroyed Ukrainian personnel, water-crossing equipment and vehicles near the village of Stanislav. Reuters could not independently verify battlefield reports.
