Security forces foiled an infiltration bid along the Line of Control in Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir by killing two militants, a defence spokesperson said on Sunday.

Based on specific inputs from intelligence agencies and J-K Police of likely infiltration in the Uri sector by heavily armed terrorists from across the LoC, troops were put on a high alert, and the counter-infiltration grid was strengthened, Srinagar-based defence spokesperson.

Taking advantage of bad weather marked by incessant rainfall and poor visibility, a group of armed terrorists attempted to infiltrate across the LoC, he said.

At around 3 pm on Saturday, the group was intercepted by alert troops resulting in a heavy exchange of fire. Intense firefight continued till last light resulting in the elimination of two terrorists, he added.

The spokesperson said the balance terrorists withdrew to the enemy side of the LoC along with the bodies of dead terrorists.

The area was kept under surveillance throughout the night.

On Sunday, a thorough search of the incident site was conducted leading to the identification of tell-tale signs and recovery of heavy war-like stores including two AK series rifles, six pistols, four Chinese grenades, blankets, and two blood-stained bags containing Pakistani and Indian currency notes, Pakistani medicines and eatables, the spokesperson said.

“As per own assessment, recovery of two blood-stained bags confirms that at least two terrorists were grievously injured forcing them to shed their load and flee across the LoC. Due to inclement weather conditions, search operation is suspended, which will resume on opening up of weather,” he said.

Albanian prosecutors have charged former Prime Minister Sali Berisha and his son-in-law on corruption charges over a land deal involving the grounds of a sports club, investigators said on Sunday.

In its indictment, the special prosecution office to fight corruption and organized crime, known as SPAK, said Berisha used his influence as premier from 2005 to 2009 to exert pressure "for the conclusion of the privatization procedures in favor of others including his daughter's husband."

While his son-in-law was arrested late on Saturday, Berisha himself is a lawmaker and has immunity from prosecution. He has been ordered not to leave the country and to report to the police.

Criminal proceedings began in 2020 when current interior minister Taulant Balla accused Berisha of being involved in the privatisation of grounds and other sport facilities belonging to FC Partizani in the capital Tirana that were later were replaced with multi-storey buildings.

Berisha has accused current Prime Minister Edi Rama of orchestrating the whole case.

"He ordered his mercenary prosecutors... The accusations are baseless and are Edi Rama's direct political attacks against me," Berisha told reporters late on Saturday.

In 2021 the United States barred Berisha and his family from entering saying that as prime minister he had been involved in "corrupt acts such as misappropriation of public funds and interfering with public processes, including using his power for his own benefit and to enrich his political allies and his family members".

Berisha served as president from 1992 to 1997, immediately after the fall of communism in Albania, and as prime minister from 2005 to 2013.

He is now leader of the biggest opposition party, the Democratic Party, but is involved in separate legal battles over his leadership with another faction.

Days after Canada removed 41 diplomats from India after the Narendra Modi government threatened to invoke their immunity, India's Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said on Sunday (Oct 22) that his government invoked the diplomatic parity as it had concerns about continuous interference in India's affairs by Canadian personnel.

Speaking at the Kautilya Economic Conclave, Foreign Minister Jaishankar said, "There's this whole issue of parity that the size of how many diplomats there are of one country versus how many diplomats there are of the other country."

"Parity is very much provided for by the Vienna Convention, which is the relevant international rule on this," Jaishankar said. "But in our case, we invoked parity because we had concerns about continuous interference in our affairs by Canadian personnel," he added.

"My sense is over a period of time more stuff will come out and people will understand why we had the kind of discomfort with many of them which we did," the Indian foreign minister further said during the event.

During the conclave, the Indian foreign minister also said that New Delhi was tracking the visa issue very closely. "Some weeks ago, we stopped issuing visas in Canada because it was no longer safe for our diplomats to go to work to issue visas. So their safety and security was the primary reason we had to temporarily stop the issue of visas. We're tracking it very closely," Jaishankar said.

"My hope, my expectation is that situation would improve in the sense that our people would have greater confidence in being able to do their basic duty as diplomats," he added.

The right-wing Swiss People's Party (SVP) topped Switzerland's general election on Sunday (Oct 22) with 29 per cent of the vote, the first result projections for the lower house of parliament showed.

According to market research group GFS Bern which carried out main polling throughout the poll campaign, the SVP improved its vote share by more than three percentage points and finished well ahead of the left-wing Social Democrats on 17 per cent and the centre-right party the Centre on 15 per cent.

The SVP had campaigned on a platform of preventing the country's population - currently at 8.7 million people - exceeding 10 million. It also picked up votes from people concerned about the slowing economy and the rising cost of living, GSF Bern said.

Polling stations in Switzerland closed at noon (1000 GMT), the vast majority of voters having posted their ballots over the past four weeks, the news agency AFP reported. Voters voted for all 200 seats in the National Council lower house of parliament and all 46 in the Council of States upper chamber.

The result is unlikely to change the makeup of Switzerland's government, the Federal Council, where seven cabinet positions are divided among the top four parties, according to their share of the vote.

UFC 294 results: Islam Makhachev (Russia) proved once again why he is the Lightweight king as he defeated Alexander Volkanovski (Australia) at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi on Sunday (Oct 22). This was Makhachev's 13th consecutive win in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and he is now tied for the third-longest win streak in the championship. The co-main event was in the Middleweight division between Kamaru Usman (United States) and Khamzat Chimaev (Russia). Chimaev won the fight by majority decision and remains undefeated in the UFC. India's Anshul Jubli made his debut at UFC 294 but faced defeat as he got knocked out by Mike Breeden in the third round. Main event: Islam Makhachev vs Alexander Volkanovski (Lightweight title fight) Islam Makhachev knocked out Alexander Volkanovski in the first round of the five-round bout for the Lightweight title fight. Volkanovski, who is the current UFC Featherweight champion, took the Lightweight fight in less than two weeks' notice after Charles Oliveira (Brazil) withdrew following an injury. The fight started with both fighters landing strikes, and Volkanovski attempting to get a takedown, and Makhachev grappling too. It seemed that Islam would face another tough 25 minutes inside the Octagon as he did in his last fight with the Australian. In his post-fight interview, Makhachev said that he would be ready to fight anyone next. Chimaev dominated the opening round with his textbook-perfect wrestling, landed sporadic shots and also threatened Usman with chokes. Both fighters had a reduced pace in the second round. From today, we are increasing the strikes and minimising the danger." Since Hamas launched an unprecedented attack against Israel on October 7, Israel struck back with devastating air and ground bombardments of Gaza. In the border village of Dhayra, farms and olive groves have been abandoned at the height of the harvest season, the report said. Lebanon is facing an economic crisis and the ongoing war (Israel vs Hamas) adds up to the problems. Slovenia on Saturday (Oct 21) deployed police on border crossings with Croatia and Hungary to prevent potential security threats. The deployment comes a day after the government decided to introduce temporary border controls until October 30. According to a report by the news agency STA, police were deployed on 14 border crossings with Croatia and Hungary.

Long queues were seen at border crossings as travellers waited to have their documents checked. Katica Fjacko, who was travelling from the Croatian capital Zagreb, said she had left earlier to make the journey because of the controls. "Now this is a bigger chaos, people are worried," she said.

Explaining the decision to introduce border controls, the Slovenian government cited security threats that may come from what it said were "members of various terrorist and extremist movements and groups" moving from areas of armed conflict and aiming to reach Europe. The government also cited a rise of organised crime in the western Balkans.

Earlier, Italy had introduced controls on its border crossing with Slovenia to improve home security. The government said that authorities in the northeastern border region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia had identified 16,000 people so far this year who had entered Italy illegally across the Slovenian border.

Slovenia, Italy, Croatia, and Hungary are among the 27 countries that belong to the Schengen area, the world’s largest free travel zone. The Schengen nations can temporarily reintroduce border controls “in the event of a serious threat to public policy or internal security.”

Italy and Slovenia's decisions reflect the increasing security concerns in Europe due to the intensifying war between Israel and Hamas, the news agency Associated Press reported.

On Thursday, European Union (EU) interior ministers debated how to manage the impact of the war on the 27-nation bloc following a firebomb assault on a synagogue in Berlin and killings in Belgium by suspected Islamic extremists.

EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson said in Luxembourg that the commission is looking into the issue of internal border checks, which she described as one of the challenges of the Schengen area.

Slovenia deploys police on border crossings with Croatia, Hungary

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday (Oct 21) addressed the Cairo Peace Summit and warned of any attempts to displace people from the war-torn Gaza Strip, or any attempts to displace Palestinians from their homes or displacing them from Jerusalem or the West Bank.

"...we will not accept displacement, and we will remain steadfast on our land no matter the challenges," President Abbas said. "Ladies and gentlemen, we will not leave, we will not leave, we will not leave, and we will remain on our land," he added. Click here to follow LIVE Updates on the Israel-Hamas war Leaders and top officials from more than a dozen countries including the United States (US), the United Kingdom (UK), Qatar, South Africa, and Italy are taking part in the Cairo Peace Summit to discuss ways to de-escalate the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. Displacement of Palestinians should be a war crime: Jordan Jordan's King Abdullah, who was a part of the summit, said in his opening speech that the forced or internal displacement of Palestinians would be a war crime. “All civilian lives matter. My friends, I’m outraged and grieved by those acts of violence waged against innocent civilians in Gaza, in the West Bank and in Israel. The relentless bombing campaign underway in Gaza, as we speak, is cruel and unconscionable on every level. It is collective punishment on a besieged and helpless people, it is a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, it is a war crime. Yet, the deeper the crisis cuts of cruelty, the less the world seems to care," King Abdullah said. Also read: Trucks, filled with humanitarian aid, enter Gaza through Rafah crossing He added that the top priorities were an immediate end to the war in Gaza, the protection of civilians, the adoption of a unified position that indiscriminately condemns the targeting of all civilians, sustained and uninterrupted delivery of human aid, fuel, and medicines to the Gaza Strip, and the unequivocal rejection of the forced displacement or internal displacement of the Palestinians. Joint statement on war unlikely The Cairo Peace Summit has been looking into ways to head off a wider regional war. However, a report by the news agency Reuters citing three diplomats said it was unlikely there would be a joint statement because of sensitivities around any calls for a ceasefire, and whether to include mention of Hamas's attack and Israel's right to defend itself. The Summit coincides with continuing Israeli preparations for a ground assault on Gaza. In his speech Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said his country opposed what he called the displacement of Palestinians into Egypt's largely desert Sinai region. "Egypt says the solution to the Palestinian issue is not displacement, its only solution is justice and the Palestinians’ access to legitimate rights and living in an independent state," he said.
