The British Police on Tuesday (Oct 17) detained Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg from a protest outside the energy sector's annual London get-together. According to a report by the news agency AFP, Thunberg, 20, was taken away by two police officers and put in the back of a police van outside the Energy Intelligence Forum. Before her detention, Thunberg joined a mass protest slamming closed-door agreements struck between politicians and representatives of the oil and gas. "Behind these closed doors, spineless politicians are making deals and compromises with lobbyists from (the) destructive fossil fuel industry," Thunberg told journalists outside the venue hosting the annual gathering. "The world is drowning in fossil fuels. Our hopes and dreams and lives are being washed away by a flood of greenwashing and lies," she added. The climate campaigner also said that it had been clear for decades that the fossil fuel industries were well aware of the consequences of their business models, and yet, they had done nothing. Protesters block all entrances to energy event venue As per the AFP report, several hundred protestors gathered by the InterContinental London Park Lane hotel during the "Oily Money Out" demonstration, organised by pressure groups Fossil Free London and Greenpeace, blocking all entrances to the venue. Banging drums, the protesters chanted, "Stop the oil, stop the gas." The protesters have argued that most industry profit is ploughed back into dirty energy that worsens climate change. "Oil companies have racked up billions upon billions of profit, breaking records across the board last year. Oily CEOs took home multi-million-pound pay cheques," Fossil Free London said in a statement. "The overwhelming majority of this money is going straight back into fossil fuel expansion, not the green energy they claim to support," the statement added. India said on Tuesday (Oct 17) that it aims to send an astronaut to the Moon by 2040, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued instructions to the space department that include plans for a space station by 2035. Prime Minister Modi also called on scientists to work on missions to Venus and Mars.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office, Modi on Tuesday addressed a high-level meeting to assess the progress of India’s Gaganyaan Mission and to outline the future of the country's space exploration endeavours.

"Building on the success of the Indian space initiatives, including the recent Chandrayan-3 and Aditya L1 Missions, Prime Minister directed that India should now aim for new and ambitious goals, including setting up ‘Bharatiya Antariksha Station’ (Indian Space Station) by 2035 and sending first Indian to the Moon by 2040," the statement said.

During the meeting, the Department of Space presented a comprehensive overview of the Gaganyaan Mission, including various technologies developed so far such as human-rated launch vehicles and system qualification.

"It was noted that around 20 major tests, including 3 uncrewed missions of the Human Rated Launch Vehicle (HLVM3) are planned. First demonstration flight of the Crew Escape System Test Vehicle is scheduled on 21 October. The meeting evaluated the mission’s readiness, affirming its launch in 2025," the statement further said.

To realise the 2040 mission, the space department will develop a roadmap for Moon exploration. This will encompass a series of Chandrayaan missions, the development of a Next Generation Launch Vehicle (NGLV), the construction of a new launch pad, and the setting up of human-centric Laboratories and associated technologies.

India aims to set up own space station by 2035, send astronaut to Moon by 2040: PM Modi

The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) said on Tuesday (Oct 17) that Tesla would recall 54,676 Model X vehicles as the vehicle controller is likely to fail to detect low brake fluid and not display a warning light. The NHSTA said that Tesla released an over-the-air (OTA) software update to fix the issue. It added that this software update was free of cost.

The US auto regulator also said that Tesla was not aware of any crashes, injuries or deaths that may be related to the issue as of October 10.

Previously, the electric automaker recalled over 360,000 in the US to update its Full Self-Driving (FSD) Beta software. This recall covered 2016-2023 Model S, Model X, 2017-2023 Model 3, and 2020-2023 Model Y vehicles equipped with FSD Beta software or pending installation

The NHTSA asked Tesla to recall these vehicles, but the automaker said that despite the recall, it did not concur with NHTSA’s analysis. The auto regulator also has an ongoing investigation into around 830,000 Tesla vehicles over a string of crashes with parked emergency vehicles.

Meanwhile, on Monday, a report by the news agency Reuters said that Tesla's margins were likely to drop in the third quarter and take a bigger hit in the last three months of this year.

The report said that investors would look for details on how Elon Musk plans to ensure that Tesla will deliver a record 476,000 vehicles in the fourth quarter to meet its annual goal of 1.8 million units.

Tesla has already cut US prices of its Model 3 compact sedan and Model Y SUV in October. Last month, it slashed prices of its premium S and X models and unveiled for some markets a restyled Model 3 with a longer driving range.

However, the automaker has yet to start deliveries of the new Model 3 in China and Europe and has not yet given a timeline for its launch in the US.

India's Supreme Court on Monday (Oct 16) referred the petitions challenging the electoral bonds scheme to a Constitution Bench of five judges. According to a report by Live Law, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud said, "In view of the importance of the issue raised, and with regard to Article 145 (4) of the Constitution of India, the matter be placed before a bench of at least five judges.

India's Supreme Court on Monday (Oct 16) referred the petitions challenging the electoral bonds scheme to a Constitution Bench of five judges. According to a report by Live Law, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud said, "In view of the importance of the issue raised, and with regard to Article 145 (4) of the Constitution of India, the matter be placed before a bench of at least five judges." CJI Chandrachud said that the matter would be retained on the board on October 30. What is the case about? The case involves a batch of petitions which challenged the amendments introduced by the Finance Act 2017 paving the way for the anonymous electoral bonds scheme. These petitions were filed in 2017. Live Law reported that last week, a three-judge bench led by CJI Chandrachud agreed to hear the petitions after the petitioners urged that the matter be heard before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The Finance Act introduced amendments to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Act, Companies Act, Income Tax Act, Representation of Peoples Act and Foreign Contributions Regulations Act to make way for the electoral bonds. Who filed the petitions? The petitions were filed by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) Common Cause and the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR). The petitioners challenged the scheme as an obscure funding system which is unchecked by any authority. They voiced apprehensions that the amendments to the Companies Act 2013 would lead to "private corporate interests taking precedence over the needs and rights of the people of the State in policy considerations." Israel's Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said on Sunday (Oct 15) that the government was taking responsibility for last week's unprecedented attack by Hamas which killed 1,400 Israeli citizens.

Israel's Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said on Sunday (Oct 15) that the government was taking responsibility for last week's unprecedented attack by Hamas which killed 1,400 Israeli citizens. Addressing a press conference, Finance Minister Smotrich said, "We have to admit honestly, painfully and with a bowed head - we, the state leadership and the security establishment, have failed in maintaining the security of our citizens." "We failed to implement the unwritten contract, the first of its kind between a state and its citizens. A contract that was written in blood and is now stained with blood," he added. Israel admits intelligence failure The minister's remarks come just a day after a senior Israeli official admitted intelligence mistakes in failing to predict the October 7 attack by Hamas. "It's my mistake, and it reflects the mistakes of all those making (intelligence) assessments," National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi told a press briefing on Saturday when asked about his recent remarks predicting no Hamas aggression. "We really believed that Hamas learned the lesson from" its last major war with Israel in 2021, Hanegbi added. Hanegbi also rejected negotiations towards any prisoner swap deal with Hamas and said there was no way to negotiate with an enemy Israel sworn to obliterate. The total deaths in the conflict have crossed 4,000 with 1,400 killed on the Israeli side and 2,670 killed in the Gaza Strip. On Sunday, the military said that it had confirmed 155 people were being held hostage by Hamas since last week. Families of "155 hostages" have been contacted by the authorities, military spokesman Daniel Hagari said, updating an earlier figure confirming 126 hostages. Russian ships linked to military transport networks have collected cargo from North Korea and delivered it to an apparent Russian military port on multiple occasions over the past two months, The Washington Post said in a report on Monday (Oct 16) citing satellite images. This is the clearest evidence so far that North Korea might be helping Moscow's war effort.

As per the report, the two ships had no record of running this route between the two countries (North Korea and Russia) until August. At that time, US intelligence assessments suggested that Russia was looking to get North Korean weaponry to replenish its dwindling supplies for the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Satellite images provided by the London-based Royal United Services Institute showed that two ships - the Angara and the Maria - have been plying the route between the North Korean port of Rajin and a secure port facility in Russia's Dunai, making at least five round trips beginning mid-August through last Saturday.

As per RUSI analysts and US officials, the images showed ships linked to the Russian military logistics network which strongly suggested that these commercial vessels were carrying military equipment.

“This will have a very serious effect on the trajectory of the war," Jack Watling from the RUSI said, adding that North Korea has the ability to manufacture a lot of ammunition and the country also has significant stockpiles.

The Washington Post reported that around the time the shipments began, munition pits were rapidly expanded at an ammunition depot near the Ukrainian border.

Citing data from Marine Traffic, a ship-tracking site, the report said the two vessels went dark shortly before they began operating on this route by turning off the signal of their automatic identification system. This allowed the vessels to hide their position as they transited between ports.

The images showed two vessels making multiple trips between Dunai and Rajin, picking up and delivering cargo at each location.

Last Friday, the White House said that North Korea delivered over 1,000 containers of military equipment and munitions to Russia in recent weeks for use in Ukraine.

"We condemn the DPRK (North Korea's official name) for providing Russia with this military equipment, which will be used to attack Ukrainian cities, kill Ukrainian civilians, and further Russia's illegitimate war," White House national security spokesman John Kirby told reporters

"We will continue to monitor for any additional DPRK arms shipments to Russia," he added.

The White House official also said that the expanding military partnership between North Korea and Russia including any technology transfers from Moscow to Pyongyang undermined regional stability and the global non-proliferation regime.

North Korea might be sending arms to Russia for Ukraine war: Report

The Lycee Gambetta High School in Arras, where a French teacher was fatally stabbed last week, was evacuated on Monday (Oct 16) following a bomb alert, the news agency Reuters reported. While there were no classes scheduled on Monday the school's doors were open for students and staff to pay tribute to teacher Dominique Bernard, who was killed by a 20-year-old man, a former student.

The suspect, identified by prosecutors as Mohamed M, was arrested. One of the attackers' brothers was also detained nearby. The attacker was on a state watchlist of people known as a potential security risk, a police source told the news agency.

Reuters reported on Monday that following the bomb alert, teachers and students left the building as they had come to pay tributes to Bernard. As a police bomb squad arrived, teachers and students gathered in the courtyard of a building opposite their school as civil protection personnel comforted them.

Tributes were also paid to the teacher on Sunday and people could be seen laying down roses at the school. "The educational community must be united, so it was important to be there. A large part of our school will be there today to pay tribute to a colleague," Celine Cailleret, a teacher for students with learning difficulties, told the news agency.

"We will be strong, united, to continue to transmit beautiful values to our students," Cailleret added.

The French government placed the country on its highest state of alert. President Emmanuel Macron condemned the killing as "barbaric Islamic terrorism." On Monday, President Macron shared a message on X to students and teachers by saying, "If I'm speaking to you, it is to assure you all that we stand with you."

"We will always counter blind hatred with the inextinguishable thirst to teach. The thirst to learn. The thirst to live freely," he added.

According to Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, the Arras attack bore a link to events in the Middle East, where Israel is conducting a military offensive to root out Hamas fighters after their deadly attack on October 7.

Speaking to CNN, NSA Sullivan said, "I have been in touch with my Israeli counterparts just within the last hour who reported to me that they have, in fact, turned the water pipe back on in southern Gaza." Since the war broke out last week, Israel cut off the water as part of its siege of the Hamas-ruled territory. Fuel and food supplies to Gaza were also cut off for the duration of the conflict. Lack of water worsens conditions in Gaza Gaza's population of 2.3 million people has not had access to clean running water after Israel cut off the supplies. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press early Sunday, residents that when does trickle from pipes, the meagre flow lasts no more than 30 minutes each day and is so contaminated with sewage and seawater that it’s undrinkable. Click here to follow LIVE updates on the Israel-Hamas war Earlier, the United Nations Palestinian refugee agency called the water crisis a “matter of life or death.” As per the World Health Organization (WHO), 50 to 100 litres per day per person are needed to ensure proper hydration and sanitation. People in Gaza have been buying dwindling jugs from municipal sanitation stations, scouring for bottles in supermarkets, or drinking whatever fetid liquid may dribble out of their pipes. The residents have also said that water along Gaza’s coast tastes like salt, which can lead to even more dehydration. US NSA says conflict could escalate Meanwhile, US NSA Sullivan also said on Sunday that the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict could escalate, and said Washington was focused on making sure the civilian population leaving Gaza has access to food, water and shelter, and that they can make it into safe areas. "There is a risk of an escalation of this conflict, the opening of a second front in the north and, of course, Iran's involvement," Sullivan told CBS. The US remained concerned about proxy forces and Lebanon's Hezbollah, he added. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community.
