North Korea said on Friday (Nov 3) that it was shutting down some of its embassies to rearrange its diplomatic capacity efficiently. Earlier, media reports said North Korea had been poised to close as many as a dozen embassies in Hong Kong, Spain and several other places in Africa. South Korea indicated that Pyongyang was struggling under the burden of sanctions.

On the North Korean foreign ministry's website, a spokesperson said, "We are carrying out operations to withdraw and establish diplomatic missions in accordance with changing global environments and national foreign policy."

The spokesperson called the shutdown a normal activity and refused to elaborate further.

On Monday, North Korean state media KCNA reported that the country's ambassadors paid farewell visits to Angolan and Ugandan leaders last week. Angola and Uganda have forged friendly ties with Pyongyang since the 1970s.

According to a report by the news agency Reuters on Wednesday, Chad O'Carroll, founder of the North Korea-focused website NK Pro, said that embassy closings set the stage for what could become one of North Korea's biggest foreign policy shakeups in decades, with implications for diplomatic engagement, humanitarian work in the isolated country, as well as the ability to generate illicit revenue.

South Korea's unification ministry, meanwhile, said the pullout reflected the impact of international sanctions aimed at curbing funding for the North's nuclear and missile programmes.

"They appear to be withdrawing as their foreign currency earning business has stumbled due to the international community's strengthening of sanctions, making it difficult to maintain the embassies any longer," the ministry said in a statement.

Indonesia's counter-terrorism unit has arrested 59 suspected militants including some loyalists of the Islamic State-inspired Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD) suspected of planning to disrupt an upcoming election, a unit spokesperson said on Tuesday.

Nineteen of those arrested were from the Jemaah Islamiah (JI) network, which has ties to al Qaeda, while 40 suspects were from JAD, which has pledged allegiance to Islamic State (IS).

Aswin Siregar, spokesperson for the Densus 88 counter-terrorism taskforce, said the JAD militants were suspected of plotting attacks to disrupt Feb. 14 presidential and legislative elections.

"For them, elections are immoral and against Islamic law," Aswin told a press conference.

"They plan to attack police facilities. It relates to their main goal which is to cancel the election," he added without giving any more detail of the suspected plotting.

The suspects were detained in operations from Oct. 2 to Oct. 28 and police also confiscated some guns and chemicals to make bombs, Aswin said.

Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim country and it saw a string of Islamist attacks in the years after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States including bombings on the holiday island of Bali in 2002 that killed more than 200 people, many of them Australian tourists.

The Bali bombings were believed to have been orchestrated by JI.

However, security analysts say the militant threat has diminished significantly in recent years, largely because of successful security force operations.

Aswin also warned that pro-Palestinian protests and fund-raising since the recent violence in the Middle East could incite anger and provoke militant attacks.

"These raise passions to commit terrorist acts," he said.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on Tuesday (Oct 31) that Russian President Vladimir Putin would succeed in his war against Ukraine if the United States halted support for Kyiv.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on Tuesday (Oct 31) that Russian President Vladimir Putin would succeed in his war against Ukraine if the United States halted support for Kyiv. Addressing a Senate hearing on supplemental funding for national security priorities including Ukraine, Austin said, "I can guarantee you that without our support, Putin will be successful." "If we pull the rug out from under them now, Putin will only get stronger and he will be successful in doing what he wants to do in acquiring his neighbour's sovereign territory," he added. Also read: Putin blames Ukraine and the West for airport riot; claims US behind 'deadly chaos' in Middle East Since Russia began its offensive in Ukraine in February last year, the US has been the biggest donor of military aid for Kyiv committing some $43.9 billion. However, several Republicans have opposed this 'Putin taking advantage of Israel-Hamas war to distract US' US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who was a part of the Senate hearing, said on Tuesday that Putin was very much trying to take advantage of the Israel-Hamas war "in the hopes that it will distract us... and that it will result in the United States pulling back its resources from Ukraine." Blinken said a halt to US aid for Ukraine could encourage other countries to follow suit. "This is an instance where we've seen very significant burden-sharing that would almost certainly go away if we go away," he said. "The message it would send... to each and every one of these countries is that the United States is abandoning ship -- well, we may as well do, too," the secretary of state added. Israel's retaliatory offensive following an unprecedented attack by Hamas on October 7 has killed more than 8,500 people in the Gaza Strip. On the Israeli side, over 1,400 people have been killed by Hamas. Antony Blinken also said on Tuesday the Palestinian Authority should retake control of the Gaza Strip from Hamas, with international players potentially filling a role in the interim. At some point, what would make the most sense would be for an effective and revitalized Palestinian Authority to have governance and ultimately security responsibility for Gaza," he said. The body of a 28-year-old man was found hanging at his residence at Chorwad village in Gujarat’s Junagadh district which police suspect is a case of suicide, an official said on Sunday.

A purported suicide note found in the possession of the deceased stated that he was taking the extreme step due to his in-laws and a Congress MLA.

Police inspector KM Gadhvi said the body of Nitin Parmar was found hanging from the ceiling of his house on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.

“Prima facie it is a case of suicide. The postmortem report to ascertain the exact cause of his death is awaited. The suicide note is under forensic investigation,” Gadhvi said.

He said the police also recovered a purported suicide note from Parmar’s possession which mentioned three names, including his father-in-law and mother-in-law, and MLA Vimal Chudasama.

Acknowledging that the deceased Parmar was his relative, Chudasama alleged it seemed to be a case of murder but shown as suicide in a conspiracy to defame him.

“The man who mentioned my name in the suicide note has not interacted with me in the last two years. He is the son of my aunt. Looking at the injury marks on his body, his family believes that he has been murdered. I think the suicide note is a conspiracy against me. The letter is not in his handwriting. This is a conspiracy by my competitor to defame me,” the Congress MLA told reporters.

Authorities in Iran arrested a prominent lawyer and human rights defender as she was attending the funeral of a 17-year-old girl who died after a disputed incident on Tehran's metro, the news agency AFP reported on Monday (Oct 30) citing the lawyer's husband. Reza Khandan, the husband of 60-year-old Nasrin Sotoudeh, said that his wife was arrested along with others during the funeral of Armita Garawand. Khandan told AFP that Sotoudeh was "violently beaten" during the arrest. Citing local media, the report said that the lawyer was arrested and handed over to authorities for not wearing a headscarf and disturbing the "society's mental security." Not the first time the lawyer was arrested This is not the first time that Sotoudeh was arrested. AFP reported that in 2018, she was imprisoned after defending a woman arrested for demonstrating against the compulsory headscarf in Iran. Garawand dies a month after she fell into coma Seventeen-year-old Armita Garawand was taken to Fajr Hospital on October 1 after an incident on the metro which left her in a coma, with sharply diverging views over how she was injured. She died last Saturday. Her case was first reported by the Kurdish-focused rights group Hengaw, which said she had been critically wounded during an incident on the metro involving Iran's morality police. However, Iranian authorities said that the teenager suffered a sudden drop in blood pressure and denied that any "physical or verbal altercations" had taken place. Her death came more than a year after Iranian Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini died in police custody after she was arrested by the morality police for allegedly breaching the women's dress code. Amini's death sparked months of protests which also led to Iranian women increasingly flouting the Islamic republic's dress code. Iran: Authorities arrest prominent lawyer at funeral of teenager Armita Garawand

A survey published on Monday (Oct 30) revealed that 44 per cent of Canadians think there is too much immigration to their country. According to a report by the news agency Bloomberg, the survey was done by Environics Institute in partnership with Century Initiative. Last year, only 27 per cent of citizens agreed that there was too much immigration in the country.

Among respondents who agree that Canada accepts too many immigrants, the most widely cited reason is that newcomers may be driving up housing prices or making fewer homes available. Some of the other top responses included concerns that immigrants were bad for the economy or were contributing to overpopulation.

The survey showed that 51 per cent disagreed that there is too much immigration, the lowest figure since 1998. Last, 69 per cent of people disagreed, the highest level on record.

The survey reflects growing criticism that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government has exacerbated existing housing shortages through its immigration policies.

Speaking to Bloomberg, the survey's author Keith Neuman said, "This is the first time in our research that a significant number of Canadians are now questioning the number of immigrants being accepted."

The main thing is that people have been more concerned about Canada's capacity to absorb a lot of newcomers when things aren’t working as well as they were before.

The survey comes as Immigration Minister Marc Miller is expected to announce on Wednesday the new annual permanent resident targets. In 2022, the Trudeau administration said that it aimed to welcome record numbers of 485,000 permanent residents next year and half a million in 2025.

Earlier, Immigration Minister Miller said he’d either keep or raise those targets, not reduce them because “the need is too great.”

For 20 years, a majority of citizens rejected the opinion that Canada was accepting too many newcomers. However, this sentiment has changed due to record population growth, high cost of living and elevated shelter prices.

Some 47 per cent of respondents are against the idea that the country needs immigrants to increase its population, compared with 38 per cent last year, the survey showed.

Muslim Americans have said they would work to mobilise millions of Muslim voters to withhold votes toward the re-election of US President Joe Biden next year unless he takes steps to implement a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip where Israeli forces launched an offensive in response to attacks by Hamas on October 7. According to a report by the news agency Reuters on Tue (Oct 31), the National Muslim Democratic Council, which includes Democratic Party leaders, called on President Biden to use his influence with Israel to broker a ceasefire by 5 pm ET on Tuesday. "Just as the United States would not agree to a ceasefire after the bombing of Pearl Harbour or after the terrorist attack of 9/11, Israel will not agree to a cessation of hostilities with Hamas after the horrific attacks of October 7th.
