Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been facing growing calls for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, said on Sunday (Nov 5) that there would be no ceasefire in the Palestinian enclave until over 200 Israeli hostages were freed by Hamas. "There will be no ceasefire without the return of the hostages. "We say this to our friends and to our enemies. We will simply continue until we defeat them. We have no alternative," he added.

Since the beginning of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7, Netanyahu has repeatedly denied a blanket ceasefire which his government said would allow Hamas to regroup and resupply.

Israel 'exposes' network of Hamas tunnels

Earlier on Sunday (Nov 5), the Israeli military said it exposed a network of Hamas tunnels, command centres and rocket launchers beneath and adjacent to hospitals in northern Gaza.

"Hamas systematically exploits hospitals as part of its war machine," Israel's chief military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari told reporters. Rear Admiral Hagari showed videos, photographs and audio recordings that he said demonstrated Hamas' strategy of using hospitals as cover and preventing civilians from leaving combat zones.

More than 800 rockets fired from Gaza at Israel during the war fell short and landed inside the enclave, killing many Palestinians, he added.

For weeks, the Israeli government has focused attention on Gaza's main hospital, al-Shifa, accusing Hamas of using it as a shield for underground operational centres.

And now, Hagari made a similar allegation for two other hospitals in northern Gaza- the Sheikh Hamad Hospital which is funded by Qatar and a hospital built by groups from Indonesia.

He said that the videos of the Qatari hospital showed an opening to Hamas tunnels and Hamas gunmen firing at Israeli soldiers from within the hospital. Meanwhile, a satellite image of the hospital built by Indonesian groups showed rocket launchers located across the street from the hospital.

Former United States president Donald Trump on Monday (Nov 6) testified in a New York court in the civil fraud trial that threatens to cripple his real estate empire - The Trump Organization. According to a report by the news agency AFP, Trump, 77, was sworn in shortly after 10:00 am (1500 GMT) to testify in the Manhattan courtroom before Judge Arthur Engoron.

Trump and his two adult sons, Donald Jr and Eric, and other Trump Organization executives are accused of exaggerating the value of their real estate assets by billions of dollars to obtain more favourable bank loans and insurance terms.

In the courtroom, Trump dismissed the allegations that his company's statements of financial condition were fraudulent, adding the value of the "Trump brand" was also not taken into account.

"I became president because of my brand," he said under questioning from Kevin Wallace, a lawyer for New York Attorney General Letitia James's office which filed the case.

AFP reported Judge Engoron complained that Trump's responses were too long to what were "yes" or "no" questions. "Please, just answer the questions, no speeches," Engoron said, adding that this was not a political rally.

Speaking to reporters before he walked into the courtroom, Trump said, "This trial is ridiculous. The numbers are much greater than the financial statements. And we've already proven that they said Mar-a-Lago was worth $18 million. Mar-a-Lago’s worth anywhere from probably 50 to 100 times more than that. And it's a terrible, terrible thing. These are political operatives that I'm going to be dealing with right now."

New York Attorney General Letitia James, who filed the case, is seeking $250 million in fines.

"Mr. Trump has repeatedly and consistently misrepresented and inflated the value of his assets. And before he takes the stand, I am certain that he will engage in name-calling and taunts and race-baiting and call this a witch hunt. But at the end of the day, the only thing that matters are the facts and the numbers. And numbers, my friends, don't lie," James said ahead.

Pope Francis on Monday skipped reading a prepared speech for a meeting with European rabbis, telling them he was not feeling well, and the Vatican said he was suffering from a slight cold but would go ahead with his other engagements for the day.

"Good morning. I greet you all and I welcome you and thank you for this visit, which greatly pleases me," he told a delegation from the Conference of European Rabbis.

"But it happens that I am not well and because of this I prefer not to read the speech but give you a copy," he said.

Francis appeared to be short of breath as he greeted the rabbis at the start of the meeting, and the cancellation of his speech set off a brief health scare for the 86-year-old pontiff.

Francis is missing part of one lung, which was removed when he was a young man in his native Argentina.

"Pope Francis has a bit of a cold and a long day of audiences," Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said in a statement.

"He wanted to greet the European rabbis individually and so he gave them his written speech. The remainder of his activities continues regularly," Bruni said.

In the past, Francis has not read prepared speeches at the last minute in order to preserve his strength. He has a big gathering with children from around the world scheduled for later on Monday at the Vatican.

The pope had surgery on June 7 to repair an abdominal hernia. He spent nine days in hospital and appears to have recovered completely from that operation.

He has made three trips abroad since the surgery and is scheduled to go to Dubai next month for the COP28 United Nations climate summit.

A day after an Israeli strike on an ambulance in the Gaza Strip on Friday (Nov 3), the evacuation of injured Gazans and foreign passport holders through the Rafah border crossing to Egypt were suspended. Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war on Oct 7, the Rafah crossing to the Sinai peninsula in Egypt has been the only exit point from Gaza not controlled by Israel. According to a report by the news agency Reuters on Sunday, US, Egyptian, and Qatari officials said that efforts were on to resume the evacuations.

Speaking to Reuters, a senior US State Department official said that the crossing would open later on Sunday. Evacuations through the Rafah border crossing started on Wednesday. Reuters reported that, unlike the previous days, Gaza's border authority did not publish a list of approved foreign passport holders and dependents.

An Egyptian official told the news agency that the Egyptian side of the border was open as usual for any evacuees, but that crossings were suspended because of bombardments in Gaza. Cairo was "making genuine efforts to resume activity," the official added.

Meanwhile, Qatar, which has played a major role in facilitating humanitarian aid and hostage releases, said it was also pushing to resume crossings but no timeline was set.

On Sunday, Qatar Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari said, "The bombing of hospitals and the bombing of ambulances, which are part of this agreement for ambulance convoys to move patients out of harm's way, certainly does not help."

"We urge all parties, but especially the occupation army to make sure that there are safe routes and that the agreement, as it was reached, is respected," he added.

Farmers in Afghanistan have lost an income of more than $1 billion from the sale of opium after the Taliban banned poppy cultivation, a report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said on Sunday (Nov 5).

Farmers in Afghanistan have lost an income of more than $1 billion from the sale of opium after the Taliban banned poppy cultivation, a report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said on Sunday (Nov 5). As per the report, opium cultivation fell throughout Afghanistan to just 10,800 hectares this year from 233,000 hectares in 2022, slashing supply by 95% to 333 tons. The UNODC said that this sharp decline was putting pressure on farmers, and it could have major consequences for the economy in a country where around two-thirds of the population is already in need of humanitarian aid. The UN agency also warned of "humanitarian consequences for many vulnerable rural communities" due to the sudden contraction of the opium economy, as growers turned to far less lucrative alternative crops such as wheat. 'Afghanistan in dire need of strong investment' In a statement, UNODC's Executive Director Ghada Waly said that Afghans need urgent humanitarian assistance to meet their most immediate needs, absorb the shock of lost income, and save lives. "Over the coming months Afghanistan is in dire need of strong investment in sustainable livelihoods to provide Afghan farmers with opportunities away from opium," Waly said. "This presents a real opportunity to build towards long-term results against the illicit opium market and the damage it causes both locally and globally," she added. Afghanistan world's biggest opium producer before Taliban takeover Before the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in 2021, the country had been the biggest opium producer globally and a major source of heroin in Europe and Asia. Taliban imposed a ban on opium poppy cultivation in April last year, dealing a heavy blow to hundreds of thousands of farmers and day labourers who relied on proceeds from the crop to survive. In its report, the UNODC also said that a huge contraction in the supply of opium from Afghanistan could eventually lead to a drop in its use internationally, but it also risked escalating the global use of alternatives such as fentanyl or synthetic opioids. Another report from the UN drugs agency in September said that Afghanistan was the world’s fastest-growing maker of methamphetamine, with seizures of the synthetic drug increasing as poppy cultivation shrank.

A radio broadcaster in the Philippines was shot dead in his studio on Sunday (Nov 5). Juan Jumalon, 57, also known as "DJ Johnny Walker" used to do his Cebuano-language show at the 94.7 Gold FM Calamba station, a report by the news agency AFP said. According to the police, Jumalon was in his home-based studio on the island of Mindanao when a gunman shot him in the head, Calamba municipality's police chief Captain Deore Ragonio said. Police said that the gunman gained entry into Jumalon's studio by pretending to want to make an on-air announcement. The gunman escaped and Jumalon was announced dead. Paul Gutierrez, the head of the Presidential Task Force on Media Security, said on Sunday that the attack was recorded on video which showed the gunman shooting Jumalon twice and grabbing his gold necklace before leaving. Police unaware of previous threats against Jumalon's life Speaking to the news agency AFP, Captain Ragonio said a motive for the killing was under investigation, adding the police were not aware of any previous threats against the 57-year-old's life. "He tackles mostly current events and is not known to have criticised anyone in his broadcasts," Ragonio said. Jumalon is the fourth journalist to be killed in the Philippines since President Ferdinand Marcos took office in June last year, according to the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP). AFP reported that the Philippines is one of the most dangerous places in the world for journalists, and their killers often get punished. Radio broadcasters outside of Manila are frequently the target. President orders probe into killing On Sunday, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr condemned Jumalon's killing and ordered the police to investigate to bring the perpetrators to justice. "Attacks on journalists will not be tolerated in our democracy, and those who threaten the freedom of the press will face the full consequences of their actions," President Marcos said in a post on X. A report by ABS-CBN news said that a special investigation task group (SITG) was formed to look into the killing. (With inputs from agencies)

US Representative Rashida Tlaib on Friday (Nov 3) accused President Joe Biden of supporting a "genocide" against Palestinians in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war and warned of repercussions in next year's election.

US Representative Rashida Tlaib on Friday (Nov 3) accused President Joe Biden of supporting a "genocide" against Palestinians in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war and warned of repercussions in next year's election. Tlaib, the first Palestinian-American woman to serve in Congress, said in a video on X, "Joe Biden supported the genocide of the Palestinian people. The American people will not forget. Biden, support ceasefire now or don't count on us in 2024." "I am a reminder to colleagues that Palestinians do indeed exist, that we are human, that we are allowed to dream. We are mothers, daughters, granddaughters. We are justice seekers and are unapologetically about our fight against oppression of all forms. And colleagues, Palestinians aren't going anywhere, no matter how much money you send to Israel's apartheid government," she added. Muslim Americans warn Biden on his re-election Tlaib's remarks come days after Muslim Americans said that they would mobilise millions of Muslim voters to withhold votes toward the re-election of Joe Biden next year unless he took steps to implement a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. The National Muslim Democratic Council, which includes Democratic Party leaders, called on President Biden to use his influence with Israel to broker a ceasefire. In a letter titled "2023 Ceasefire Ultimatum," the council pledged to mobilise Muslim voters to "withhold endorsement, support, or votes for any candidate who endorses the Israeli offensive against the Palestinian people." "Your administration's unconditional support, encompassing funding and armaments, has played a significant role in perpetuating the violence that is causing civilian casualties and has eroded trust in voters who previously put their faith in you," the letter said. In Jordan, Blinken reaffirms US support for humanitarian pauses in war US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Saturday reaffirmed Washington's support for humanitarian pauses in the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza to ensure desperate civilians get help. Addressing a press conference in Amman, Blinken said, "The United States believes that all of these efforts will be facilitated by humanitarian pauses."
