Authorities in China on Tuesday (Nov 7) detained two prominent businessmen - Chen Shaojie and Zhao Bingxian. According to a report by the news agency AFP, Chen Shaojie, the founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of live streaming platform DouYu, has not been seen in public for weeks. Citing local media, the report said industry insiders believed Chen's disappearance was related to suspected gambling during a live stream on the platform on DouYu.

"DouYu's business operations remain normal," the company's representatives said. Chen's colleagues were unaware of his whereabouts and were unable to get in contact with him.

Meanwhile, Zhao Bingxian, who is also known as China's Warren Buffett, was assisting authorities in an investigation, his company Wohua Pharmaceutical said. Wohua did not disclose any details about Zhao's detention but said the matter had nothing to do with the company, BBC reported.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has launched an intense crackdown on corruption which has led to arrests, detentions and cases against the country's leading financiers and businesspeople.

Last week, Zhang Hongli, the former vice president of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), was placed under investigation for suspected corruption. Zhang was suspected of serious disciplinary and legal violations, China's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection said.

This investigation comes after the Bank of China's former chairperson Liu Lian'ge was arrested by the country's top prosecutor. He was arrested on suspicion of taking bribes and illegally granting loans.

At the start of October, Everbright Group's former head Li Xiaopeng was fired from the ruling Communist Party and dismissed from public service. Li accepted gifts and money, defied a party policy on improving conduct and "attempted to obstruct the investigation into his case".

And in September, the former chairman and Chinese Communist Party chief of China Life Insurance, Wang Bin, was sentenced to life in prison for corruption.

Voters in US states including Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio and New Jersey are heading to elections on Tuesday (Nov 7) that could offer an interim verdict on the 2024 presidential election.

Voters in US states including Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio and New Jersey are heading to elections on Tuesday (Nov 7) that could offer an interim verdict on the 2024 presidential election. According to a report by The Guardian, voters in Kentucky and Mississippi would be electing governors, voters in Virginia and New Jersey will decide legislative control while those in Ohio will determine whether the state's constitution should protect abortion rights. Ohio is the only state which is seeing voting on protecting abortion rights. The Guardian report said that a ballot question in Ohio will ask voters whether to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution. The voters will also answer a ballot question about whether marijuana should be legalised for recreational purposes. If approved, marijuana would be legalised, regulated and taxed. Meanwhile, a report by CNN said that elections in Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Kentucky could offer a roadmap for next year for both Democrats and Republicans. Voters in Kentucky said a wide range of issues including abortion, schools and border security motivated them to vote on Tuesday. Biden trails Trump in 2024 election's key states Polls released last Sunday showed that President Joe Biden is trailing Republican frontrunner and former president Donald Trump in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada and Pennsylvania. As per New York Times and Siena College Polls, Biden was ahead in Wisconsin. Biden defeated Trump in all six states in 2020, but Trump now leads by an average of 48% to 44% in those states, the polls also showed. They further revealed that Biden's multiracial and multigenerational coalition appeared to be fraying. Voters under the age of 30 favoured Biden by only a single percentage. His lead among voters is down to single digits. Trump meanwhile, saw a rise in support by Black voters by 22 per cent, a level New York Times reported was unseen in presidential politics for a Republican in modern times.

Condemning Kessler's death, Israeli opposition leader, Yair Lapid said "the man was killed because he was a jew".

"It is not because of Gaza, it is because of antisemitism," Lapid said in a post on X, adding, "This is what happens when protesters glorify Hamas and call to globalize the intifada."

Pereira vs Procházka: Who wins UFC Light Heavyweight title?

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 295 will be held on Nov 12 and the main event is the Light Heavyweight title clash between Alex Pereira (Brazil) and Jiri Procházka (Czechia).

Pereira has ten fights in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) so far with eight wins and two losses. Procházka, on the other hand, is more experienced in MMA with 33 fights, which include 29 wins, three losses, and one draw.

Both fighters are elite strikers in the world of combat sports. Even though Procházka presents a knockout threat, Pereira would be a difficult opponent for him as the Brazilian is a kickboxing veteran and held the Middleweight and Light Heavyweight titles in Glory before he switched to MMA.

Pereira is also the former UFC Middleweight champion.

Pereira has a significant striking accuracy of 62%, while Procházka's rate is 55%. However, the Czech has a slightly better figure of significant strikes landed per minute at 5.77 compared to Pereira who is at 5.11.

Both fighters are elite strikes and rarely grapple or wrestle. But Procházka has an edge given his greater experience in MMA and he was the previous UFC Light Heavyweight champion after defeating Brazil’s Glover Teixeira by submission.

Who is the next Light Heavyweight King?

It’s a difficult contest for sure and both fighters will likely stay on their feet. Procházka has more MMA experience and presents a greater knockout and grappling threat. But Pereira quickly earned a name for himself in the UFC, and his devastating left hook and unusual low kicks would be extremely challenging for the Czech.

Prediction: Pereira wins by knockout or Procházka wins by submission.

Daye, a gynaecological health startup in the United Kingdom (UK), has launched a tampon that offers screening of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), British media reported on Monday (Nov 6). The "STI Diagnostic Tampon" uses a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to test for five STIs - chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomonas, mycoplasma and ureaplasma.

This tampon is used in place of a swab or speculum, a report by The Guardian on Monday said. According to Daye, the diagnostic tampon aims to speed up diagnosis and treatment. As per the startup's website, women can order the kit online, collect and send their samples to Daye's partner labs, and receive their results online.

As per The Guardian report, Professor Michelle Tempest from Cambridge University’s medical school said that Daye was redefining STI testing, allowing women to take control of their sexual health “in a noninvasive way in the comfort of their own homes”.

Meanwhile, Dr Amira Bhaiji, an internal medicine physician, said that this tampon was the perfect solution for increased uptake and accuracy of STI testing. Dr Bhaiji added that the kit would give the users "their ownership back, which historically has been known to be quite a lonely and very personal struggle for some to overcome”.

However, Dr Emma Harding-Esch, an epidemiologist, cautioned on some forms of at-home testing. Dr Harding-Esch said that the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (Bashh) considers testing for organisms of doubtful clinical significance, such as ureaplasma, among others inappropriate, as it could lead to overtreatment.

Last year, Daye launched a vaginal microbiome screening service. Speaking to TechCrunch, the startup said it had “thousands” of customers for this service. Daye has also claimed that tampons are a better testing device than swabs or any other protocols that a patient might be administered at a clinic since its test tampons collect more vaginal fluid and cover a larger surface area.

Thousands of people on Monday (Nov 6) protested at the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in Balochistan against the Pakistani government's decision to restrict border crossings for those not having a visa and passport. From Nov 1, all Afghan nationals entering Pakistan have been required to show a valid passport and visa, as per the new "one document regime" which replaced previous special travel permit allowances for divided tribes along the border.

On X, images shared by The Khorasan Diary showed people including local tribes, and trade unions demonstrating against Islamabad's decision. The decision is primarily affecting tribes in southern Afghanistan, who regularly cross the border for work or family visits using a local document known as "tazkira."

The change follows a nationwide crackdown on illegal Afghan immigrants in Pakistan, and an announcement that Islamabad would deport such immigrants.

Since the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Pakistan has hosted a large number of Afghan refugees, and nearly 2.9 million (of refugees) still live in the country.

A report by the Ministry of States and Frontier Regions, which deals with Afghan refugees, said that over 1.3 million refugees have Proof of Registration (PoR) cards and over 800,000 have Afghan Citizen Cards (ACCs).

However, 700,000 Afghans have been living in Pakistan without any documents, the report added.

Pakistan has brushed off calls from the United Nations (UN), human rights groups and Western embassies to expel more than a million of 4 million Afghans from the country.

As of Sunday, the number of illegal Afghan immigrants who have been "voluntarily repatriated" from Pakistan stands at 188,738.

Last week, the UN's International Organisation for Migration and UNICEF expressed concern for the safety of children and families affected by the expulsion, saying a humanitarian crisis was unfolding with winter on the way.

In Afghanistan, the Taliban administration is struggling to cope with the influx and has set up temporary transit camps where food and medical assistance will be provided. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, refugee groups have reported chaotic and desperate scenes at the camps.
