The death toll due to an earthquake in Nepal has climbed to 157, the news agency Reuters reported on Saturday (Nov 4). Rescue workers started digging through the rubble of collapsed houses with their bare hands to search for any survivors. The earthquake struck the Jajarkot region in the west on Friday night with a magnitude of 6.4, Nepal's National Seismological Centre said. However, the German Research Centre for Geosciences measured it at 5.7 and the US Geological Survey at 5.6. Officials said that although the quake's magnitude was not severe, the damage and the death toll were high due to the poor quality of construction in the area and because it struck while people slept. Officials pointed out that rescue work was expected to be slow as emergency teams had to first clear roads blocked by landslides in many places. 'Residents too scared to go into cracked houses' Speaking to Reuters, Jajarkot district official Harish Chandra Sharma that the number of injured could be in the hundreds and deaths could go up as well. Sharma said that many houses collapsed and many others developed cracks. Thousands of residents spent the entire night in cold, open grounds because they were too scared to go into the cracked houses as aftershocks struck. "I have myself not been able to go in," he added. PM Dahal oversees rescue and relief ops Earlier on Saturday, Nepalese Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal arrived in Jajarkot with a 16-member army medical team to oversee search, rescue and relief. According to Prime Minister Dahal's office, political parties, social workers and the public were urged to donate funds to help arrange food, water, clothes and tents for the survivors. The epicentre of the earthquake was in the village of Ramidanda. As per the National Seismological Centre, 175 aftershocks were recorded in ajarkot and six of them were of magnitude 4 or higher. The tremors were also felt in northern parts of neighbouring India, shaking buildings and forcing people to run into the streets late on Friday night. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was deeply saddened by the loss of lives and damage in Nepal. "India stands in solidarity with the people of Nepal and is ready to extend all possible assistance. Our thoughts are with the bereaved families and we wish the injured a quick recovery," Modi said in a post on X. (With inputs from agencies)

Thousands of garment workers in Bangladesh, who have been protesting for a week to demand a near-tripling of wages, clashed with police on Saturday (Nov 4) near the capital city of Dhaka as garment factories reopened in defiance of the protest.

Thousands of garment workers in Bangladesh, who have been protesting for a week to demand a near-tripling of wages, clashed with police on Saturday (Nov 4) near the capital city of Dhaka as garment factories reopened in defiance of the protest. According to a report by the news agency AFP, the clashes broke out in the industrial town of Ashulia, west of Dhaka, after around 10,000 workers attempted to prevent their colleagues from returning to their shifts. Speaking to AFP, Ashulia police chief Mohammad Sarowar Alam said that the striking garment workers hurled stones and bricks at officers and tried to block roads. "We dispersed them by firing tear gas," Alam said, adding that 1,500 security personnel had been deployed in Ashulia and nearby Savar to keep order. On Monday, protests were also held in Ashulia, Gazipur and Hemayetpur. Protests halt production for top fashion brands There are a total of 3,500 garment factories in Bangladesh which account for around 85 per cent of the country's $55 billion exports, supplying many of the top global brands including Zara, Levi's and H&M. Since the beginning of the protests, dozens of factories have been ransacked by the protesting workers, and several hundred other factories have been shut down by their owners to avoid vandalism. Among them are "many of the country's bigger factories, who make clothing for almost all major Western brands and retailers," Kalpona Akter, president of the Bangladesh Garments and Industrial Workers Federation (BGIWF), told AFP. "They include Gap, Walmart, H&M, Zara, Inditex, Bestseller, Levi's, Marks and Spencer, Primark and Aldi," Akter added. Garment workers have said that a sharp increase in living costs has left them struggling to provide for their families. AFP reported on Saturday that the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), which represents factory owners, has offered workers a 25 per cent pay raise. However, this is significantly short of the $209 (23,000 taka) monthly wage that the protests called for. Akter also told the news agency that brands and retailers only care about smooth shipments and profits, and are not concerned about the well-being of the workers, many of whom are half-starving. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Friday (Nov 3) that Israel would not agree to a temporary truce in its war on Hamas without the release of hostages taken from Israel to Gaza. Following his meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Tel Aviv, Prime Minister Netanyahu told reporters, "We're continuing with all our force and Israel is refusing a temporary truce that doesn't include the release of our hostages." "Israel will not permit the transfer of fuel to the Gaza Strip and opposes the transfer of funding to Gaza. Citizens of Israel, from the outbreak of war on that black sabbath, we have lost many civilians, fighters, soldiers, members of the security services, police, and emergency workers. We've lost incredible combat soldiers, beloved Israelis," Netanyahu added. A few days ago, Netanyahu said his government was not prepared to agree to a ceasefire with Hamas, saying it would be "to surrender to terrorism, to surrender to barbarism." 'Palestinians at grave risk of genocide': UN experts call for ceasefire On Thursday, a group of independent United Nations experts called for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, saying that time was running out for Palestinians in the war-torn region who were at a grave risk of genocide. In a statement, the group of experts said, "We remain convinced that the Palestinian people are at grave risk of genocide. We demand a humanitarian ceasefire to ensure that aid reaches those who need it the most." "We must join forces to end this nightmare for the people of Gaza, Israel and all those affected around the world," he added. (With inputs from agencies)
