US Arm of China's Biggest Lender Hit by Ransomware Attack

Malware Disrupts Trade in US Treasury Market

The US arm of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), which is China's biggest lender, was hit by a ransomware attack on Nov 9 which disrupted trades in the US Treasury market.

The US arm- ICBC Financial Services- said that it was investigating the attack and was making progress toward recovering from it. The Chinese foreign ministry said on Nov 10 that ICBC was striving to minimise the risk impact and losses after the attack.

Chinese foreign ministry ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said that business remained normal at ICBC's head office and other branches across the world.

Several ransomware experts and analysts said that an aggressive cybercrime gang named Lockbit was believed to be behind the hack. Lockbit's website on the Dark Web where it posts the names of its victims did not mention the Chinese lender.

The ICBC said it successfully cleared trades executed on Nov 8 and repurchased agreements financing trades done on Nov 9. Curvature Securities, a repo at broker dealer, said the attack had a limited impact on the market. However, some market participants said trades going through ICBC were not settled due to the malware and affected market liquidity.

A ragpicker in the Indian city of Bengaluru found US dollar bills worth 3 million. That story now has a gangster plot, a kidnap twist and a fake currency angle.

According to a report by NDTV on Friday (Nov 10), the jackpot had fake notes. Saleman discovered the money earlier this month while he was scavenging for waste near the Nagawara railway station.

Speaking to NDTV, Saleman said he fainted after seeing this much money, adding he knew that it was not Indian currency.

According to Bappa, he kept saying to the gang that he informed the police and gave them the dollar bills. However, it took a few hours for the gang to believe him and let him go.

The contractor also told NDTV that he did not file a police complaint as the gang threatened to kill his family if he did.

The package that Saleman found near the Nagawara railway station also had a note on a United Nations letterhead talking about the conflict in Sudan. The note said that the dollar bills were anti-breeze and were not to be exposed to air or atmospheric pressure.

Saleman said that the bills had a smell of some chemical and he fell sick. The police seized the bills and sent them to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for examination.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk on Friday (Nov 10) called for an investigation into what he called Israel's use of "high-impact explosive weapons" in the Gaza Strip.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk on Friday (Nov 10) called for an investigation into what he called Israel's use of "high-impact explosive weapons" in the Gaza Strip. Addressing a press conference in Jordan's capital city of Amman, Turk said these weapons were causing indiscriminate destruction in Gaza. Turk did not specify what weapons he was referring to. "The extensive Israeli bombardment of Gaza, including the use of high-impact explosive weapons in densely populated areas ... is clearly having a devastating humanitarian and human rights impact," he told reporters. 'Attacks in Gaza must be probed' "The attacks must be investigated ... We have very serious concerns that these amount to disproportionate attacks in breach of international humanitarian law," the top UN official added. Reacting to his remarks, Israel's permanent mission to the UN in Geneva said, "Israel abides by international humanitarian law at all times. Terrorists don’t." The mission added that Hamas embedded itself in densely populated areas and was preventing civilians from leaving. Click here to follow all updates on the Israel-Hamas war The conflict between Israel and Hamas has been going on for more than a month now, and thousands of people have been killed on both sides of the conflict. Turk also told reporters that any use by Palestinian armed groups of civilians and civilian objects to shield themselves from attack was in contravention of the laws of war. Myanmar's military junta said that a major offensive in the country's northeast by an alliance of rebel groups was funded in part from profits earned by one of the groups from the region's lucrative drug trade.

Myanmar's military junta said that a major offensive in the country's northeast by an alliance of rebel groups was funded in part from profits earned by one of the groups from the region's lucrative drug trade. During a meeting of the National Defense and Security Council on Wednesday, junta leader General Min Aung Hlaing said that the current problem in the Shan state was triggered by "narcotic drug problems," the news agency Associated Press reported on Friday (Nov 10) citing local media. “Earnings from narcotic drugs were spent on seizing power through the armed struggle. Such a plan was covered by drug production and trafficking,” General Hlaing added. Hlaing accused the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), one of the rebel groups, of drug trafficking. The MNDAA denied this allegation. Since October 27, the MNDAA, the Arakan Army (AA) and other ethnic groups launched a military operation against the junta. The fiercest fighting has been reported near Myanmar's border with China in Shan where the rebel groups' offensive has taken multiple towns and military outposts in recent weeks. Drug trade funding rebel groups The Associated Press reported that the drug trade in Myanmar has been attributed to various ethnic minority groups for funding their armed movement. Army personnel, especially those at the regional level, have also been accused of involvement. Also read: Northern Myanmar fighting displaces almost 50,000 civilians, says UN Meanwhile, during Wednesday's defence and security council meeting, Acting President Myint Swe warned that Myanmar was in critical condition and could be torn apart if the military did not take action against the groups which carried out the offensive. Around 50,000 displaced in Shan state On Friday, the United Nations said that around 50,000 people had been displaced in Shan, where artillery shelling and airstrikes were continuing, and some crossed into China. The ongoing offensive has put further pressure on the junta which is already facing economic sanctions, a shortage of foreign exchange and a corruption crisis. Myanmar's neighbour China is alarmed by the deteriorating situation and urged all parties in Myanmar to stop fighting immediately. The Chinese foreign ministry said on Friday that Beijing would ensure security and stability at its border with Myanmar. "China is highly concerned about the conflict in northern Myanmar and urges all parties concerned in Myanmar to immediately cease fire and stop fighting, pay practical attention to China's security concerns, and work with China to maintain the safety of China-Myanmar co-operation projects and business personnel," foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin told reporters. A few weeks back, prominent Bollywood figures were summoned by India's central agency the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering investigation linked to a betting app case.

A few weeks back, prominent Bollywood figures were summoned by India's central agency the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering investigation linked to a betting app case. The case involved is the Mahadev betting app - which provides betting in different kinds of games and card games. The promoters of the app are Ravi Uppal and Saurabh Chandraka. Uppal and Chandraka are residents of Bhilai in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh but they currently stay in Dubai. The ED claimed that a forensic analysis and a statement made by a cash courier led to allegations that the app's promoters paid over $61 million (around Rs 508 crore) to Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel. Elections are on in Chhattisgarh and this case might affect Chief Minister Baghel's prospects. The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state has repeatedly hit out at Baghel and his government over the case. What is the app & the controversy? The Mahadev app facilitates betting on different types of games including cricket, football, tennis etc.. Reports say the app facilitates betting on card games including poker and also virtual sporting games. The app is operated by a network of closed groups on different instant messaging platforms. These groups have reportedly earned around $24 million per day. The modus operandi here is that the groups will post phone numbers of websites in an attempt to lure people to play and make profits. Once these numbers are contacted, people will be provided with two separate contact numbers. One such number is for depositing money and getting points in user IDs used for betting, while the other is for contacting the website to cash out the points in the assigned IDs. Why is Bollywood under the scanner? Several Bollywood figures from Ranbir Kapoor to Kapil Sharma have been summoned by the ED in connection with the case. However, these figures are not necessarily accused but are believed to have been associated with the Mahadev app in various capacities. Some of them reportedly endorsed the app, while others were involved in entertaining guests at a wedding of one of the app's promoters held overseas. Recently, the central government blocked 22 illegal betting apps in the country which also included the Mahadev app. A political war of words A political war of words has broken between the BJP and Bhupesh Baghel over the case. Last Sunday, the BJP shared a video of Shubham Soni, an accused in the case, where he said that he was the owner of the app and had evidence of paying $61 million to Chhattisgarh CM Baghel. However, Baghel has dismissed all allegations and accused the BJP of weaponising the ED. "...Why has the Election Commission not taken cognizance of this? ... A complaint will be sent from us...Investigation should be done for the tarnishing image... There are clear directions in the guidelines of the Election Commission...They should look into this..." he told reporters on Monday.
