Already, in Seychelles, we established a framework that enables the Cabinet of ministers to be informed by an economic monitoring group, what is happening on a regular basis, and we are involving the whole of society. What's your view? It's an Indian Ocean region, your crucial part of the Indian Ocean? How much of a worry is it? Barry Faure: Yes, it is of concern. It is important that there is peace in our region. We advocate for that, we ask all parties to choose peace over war.WION: How do you see Seychelles-India ties in the context of your President's recent visit?&nbsp; Barry Faure: It's one of the best visits ever, I think that has been done by a head of state, and that was the first visit of our head of state, since he was elected in October last year, which shows the importance of this relationship, which is a strategic partnership relationship between India and Seychelles, there were some important announcements which were made, and I can assure you that these are not just declarations that we are moving to full implementation. Prime Minister Modi will be visiting Seychelles in June to celebrate the 50th anniversary since our independence and since the establishment of diplomatic relations, which again, is a strong indicator of the level of the relationship between our two countries.

WION: What is your focus here in India? And essentially, how do you see the India-Norway relationship, which has seen a lot of high-level engagements? Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik: We have a very strong and robust relationship with India, and this was consolidated and advanced now with this free trade agreement, which gives predictability for our enterprise. I'm here to have conversations about that, to find ways for us to collaborate even further on commercial for commercial purposes, but obviously, given the ascendancy of India on the world stage, it's important for us to discuss geopolitical topics. I've been saying that no solution to any global problem can be found without the participation of India. We are discussing UN reform, reforming the WTO, upholding respect for international law, how we can find sustainable solutions to the climate crisis, and the recent attacks by the US and Israel against Iran. So we're essentially here to discuss all kinds of issues with official representation from India, but also with stakeholders and individuals. I was at a university here in India to give a lecture on Norwegian foreign policy. How do you think that this war is going to impact global stability? What is the perspective of Norway? Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik: Well, I think you're entirely right. I think the last thing that the Middle East needs now is another war, and this is, of course, a big war between the US and Israel on the one side, and Iran on the other. This war has already escalated. Other countries are now implicated, having been targeted by Iran. Our sympathies, first and foremost, are with the Iranian people. They have been brutalised by a very repressive, authoritarian Iranian regime, and now they're taking heat again in terms of being in the middle of this very brutal military conflict. We have also said very clearly that we want to see international law respected, and we don't think that the attacks by the US and Israel were in line with international law. We flag that as a concern, but obviously, we're equally concerned or more concerned, about the way in which Iran has responded. But the most important thing now is to find a peaceful solution to this conflict so we can avoid upsetting global markets and to come back to a situation of stability in not just a region, but in the international community.WION: Do you think that this war is somehow upending the international relationship? Because the worry in the global south is whatever Iran is doing, what the Americans did by attacking a head of government, by killing a head of government, is shocking. Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik: Well, I don't think that that's only a concern for capitals in the Global South. It's also something that we have flagged as a concern, not just in the context of Iran, but also in terms of Venezuela and the apprehension of the Venezuelan President Maduro. This is a clear principle which is protected under international law, that heads of States have immunity, and we think that should be respected. Having said that, there are also other principles that should be respected, such that Iran and the Iranian regime should not brutalise its own population. So you have various principles now being undermined by various governments, and we will continue to speak out against those kinds of violations. Our first and foremost priority now is to help bring about a peaceful resolution to this problem. We are speaking to all parties in order to see if there's anything we can do to facilitate a peaceful outcome.WION: Talking about the war in Europe, it's been more than four years now. Where do you think the situation is heading? Do you see an off-ramp coming, or do you see the stalemate continuing? Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik: Well, it's difficult to say. Our starting point is very clear. We have said, and we have condemned to the fullest extent possible the Russian aggression, which is a blatant violation of the UN Charter. We have supported Ukraine with military means, economic support, also political support, obviously, and we will continue to do so. We recognise that the parties need to come to a conclusion. We have said that we will support whatever outcome the Ukrainians are satisfied with. It should be a just and lasting peace. I think there have been constructive conversations between the parties. That's a good thing, but thus far, a resolution has not been found, and we will continue to support Ukraine up until a resolution is identified, and we'll see if that can be identified in the near future or in the medium to long term. But our support for Ukraine is unwavering.WION: How will the TEPA trade and India EU trade agreement help the global community? Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik: Well, we think trade is beneficial to countries. So the fact that India has been able to enter into these enormous trade agreements with the EU, with EFTA and other entities, that's an important step forward for us. This is beneficial. It provides predictability to our enterprises and to our commercial community in Norway. I think it's also beneficial to Indian consumers and Indian enterprises. So I think it's another example of ETFA countries, and Norway just deepening and broadening its relationship with India. We see India as an ascending major power in the global community, and for us, it's important to collaborate with India in as many areas as possible, also in the economic space, and we're doing that, and this agreement will be a very important vehicle to drive that collaboration.

In an interview with WION's Sidhant Sibal, Mr. Ramful highlighted the broad economic and security impacts stemming from the hostilities, particularly disruptions to energy supplies, food security, and tourism, a key pillar of Mauritius' economy. "The Indian Ocean region is important for the economic survival of all the coastal states bordering the Indian Ocean," he said. "Especially for a small island developing state like Mauritius, which is highly dependent on the marine resources from the ocean, and also, definitely that's going to have an impact on the supply of energy".&nbsp; The minister stressed Mauritius' call for de-escalation, noting that the government had issued an official statement since the crisis began. He also spoke on suspending ties with Maldives, and Chagos issue. Interview:&nbsp;Sidhant Sibal:&nbsp; How do you see India, Mauritius ties? Dr Dhananjay Ramful: Well, as you are well aware that you know, Indian Mauritius have long standing relationship since 1948 and since then, this relationship has been growing intensely, and we have also very culturally attached, not to forget that we have quite a large amount of our ancestors come from India. As far as economic partnership is concerned, we have the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement under which we are dealing with India. There are a number of trade exchanges with India. India has always been very forthcoming when it comes to assistance. The Prime Minister of India was in Mauritius&nbsp;last year, and we were given quite a big financial package in terms of lines of credit and also grants for our infrastructural development. So, as it has always been, India and Mauritius are very closely linked together. Sidhant Sibal: What can one expect in the relationship? Further, you pointed out that the Prime Minister was here for the AI Summit Dr Dhananjay Ramful: So the prime minister Mauritius was here a few weeks back in February for the AI Summit, and where he had a bilateral meeting with his Excellency, the Prime Minister Modi, and where there were discussions about India, America cable submarine. Our own cable submarine has now reached its expired date. So there was a request for that submarine to be extended to Mauritius. So this is under process. There were also talks, and this comes at the right moment, because there were talks about trying to get a G2G with India for the supply of petroleum products. So, as you know, we get our supply of products from, mainly Oman and the Middle East. So we were thinking of getting a G2G from one of the oil refineries here in India. And so that's an upcoming project that we'll be discussing about. Sidhant Sibal: So if you can perhaps talk about your assessment, your view about the West Asia war? Dr Dhananjay Ramful: Indian Ocean region is important for the economic survival of all the coastal states&nbsp;bordering the Indian Ocean. Especially for a small island developing state like Mauritius, which is highly dependent on the marine resources from the ocean, and also, definitely that's going to have an impact on the supply of energy. Also the food security issue might crop up because we import most of our food from abroad, and also being a tourist destination. Mauritius' Foreign Minister Dhananjay Ramful has warned that the escalating conflict in West Asia has evolved into a regional crisis with far-reaching global consequences, severely affecting nations in the Indian ocean region. In an interview with WION's Sidhant Sibal, Mr. Ramful highlighted the broad economic and security impacts stemming from the hostilities, particularly disruptions to energy supplies, food security, and tourism, a key pillar of Mauritius' economy. "The Indian Ocean region is important for the economic survival of all the coastal states bordering the Indian Ocean," he said. "Especially for a small island developing state like Mauritius, which is highly dependent on the marine resources from the ocean, and also, definitely that's going to have an impact on the supply of energy". The minister stressed Mauritius' call for de-escalation, noting that the government had issued an official statement since the crisis began. He also spoke on suspending ties with Maldives, and Chagos issue. Interview: Sidhant Sibal: How do you see India, Mauritius ties? Dr Dhananjay Ramful: Well, as you are well aware that you know, Indian Mauritius have long standing relationship since 1948 and since then, this relationship has been growing intensely, and we have also very culturally attached, not to forget that we have quite a large amount of our ancestors come from India. As far as economic partnership is concerned, we have the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement under which we are dealing with India. There are a number of trade exchanges with India. India has always been very forthcoming when it comes to assistance. The Prime Minister of India was in Mauritius last year, and we were given quite a big financial package in terms of lines of credit and also grants for our infrastructural development. So, as it has always been, India and Mauritius are very closely linked together. Sidhant Sibal: What can one expect in the relationship? Further, you pointed out that the Prime Minister was here for the AI Summit Dr Dhananjay Ramful: So the prime minister Mauritius was here a few weeks back in February for the AI Summit, and where he had a bilateral meeting with his Excellency, the Prime Minister Modi, and where there were discussions about India, America cable submarine. Our own cable submarine has now reached its expired date. So there was a request for that submarine to be extended to Mauritius. So this is under process. There were also talks, and this comes at the right moment, because there were talks about trying to get a G2G with India for the supply of petroleum products. So, as you know, we get our supply of products from, mainly Oman and the Middle East. So we were thinking of getting a G2G from one of the oil refineries here in India. And so that's an upcoming project that we'll be discussing about. Sidhant Sibal: So if you can perhaps talk about your assessment, your view about the West Asia war? Dr Dhananjay Ramful: Indian Ocean region is important for the economic survival of all the coastal states bordering the Indian Ocean. Especially for a small island developing state like Mauritius, which is highly dependent on the marine resources from the ocean, and also, definitely that's going to have an impact on the supply of energy. Also the food security issue might crop up because we import most of our food from abroad, and also being a tourist destination.
