<p>An underwater vehicle went missing after it exploded under the "Doomsday Glacier" in Antarctica.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The 23-foot-long unmanned underwater vehicle (AUV), which was called Ran, was sent on a mission to study the Thwaites Glacier, and it disappeared this weekend.</p>

<p>Ran is a unique vehicle and there are only two similar vehicles in the world which contain technology and sensors which allow it to measure and document the conditions of water underneath glacial ice for long periods of time and is likely to cost about $3.6 million.</p>

<p>"This was the second time we took Ran to Thwaites Glacier to document the area under the ice. Thanks to Ran, we became the first researchers in the world to enter Thwaites in 2019, and during the current expedition we have visited the same area again. Even if you see melting and movements in the ice from satellite data, from Ran we get close-ups of the underside of the ice and information about exactly which mechanisms are behind the melting," said Anna Wahlin, who is a professor of oceanography at the University of Gothenburg and member of the research team, in a statement.</p>

<h2><strong>'Like looking for a needle in a haystack'</strong></h2>

<p>The Thwaites Glacier, which has been part of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS), is the widest glacier present on Earth.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It has a surface area of about 74,000 square miles. Thwaites is also called the Doomsday Glacier because of the massive impact it will have on global sea levels if it were to melt completely.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"A sea level rise of several metres would inundate many of the world's major cities—including Shanghai, New York, Miami, Tokyo and Mumbai. It would also cover huge swathes of land in coastal regions and largely swallow up low-lying island nations like Kiribati, Tuvalu and the Maldives," wrote Ella Gilbert, a postdoctoral research associate in climate science at the University of Reading, United Kingdom, in an article for the Conversation in 2021.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Although an alarm regarding China’s offensive cyber capabilities has been sounded earlier by the cyber officials, Wray’s dramatic public warning emphasised on huge level of concern among the top officials regarding the threats that the Chinese hackers are posing to critical infrastructure nationwide.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The National Security Agency's head and other senior US officials also testified over Chinese cyber activity in front of the panel on Wednesday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“And let’s be clear: Cyber threats to our critical infrastructure represent real world threats to our physical safety," he added. Earlier, the Chinese government has previously denied allegations regarding hacking efforts.</p>

<p>The findings were based on the figures from an Ipsos poll for King’s College London’s Policy Institute and the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership and included a representative survey of 3,716 people above the age of 16.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The survey included questions about how helpful the term “toxic masculinity” is, whether women or men have it tougher today, their views on feminism, and Andrew Tate.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It shows that despite being overall more socially liberal young men today are no longer supportive of action on gender equality than the older generations, but are more worried about challenges facing men.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, young women have become pessimistic about the future progress of gender equality in the upcoming years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Younger people overall reportedly have a more favourable view of the term “toxic masculinity.”. However, 37 per cent of men aged 16 to 29 find the term unhelpful, and roughly double the number of young women who agreed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On the other hand, around 47 per cent of young women as opposed to 29 per cent of young men – or any other age category reportedly find it helpful.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The study also noted the biggest gender gap in views among the youngest generation when the participants of the survey were asked whether women or men have it harder.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At least 68 per cent of women aged between 16 to 29 said it is harder to be a woman when compared to 35 per cent of young men in agreement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Around 30 per cent of men aged 16 to 29 said it will be much harder to be a man in 20 years’ time. However, nearly half of the young women of the same age said it would be the opposite.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Iran-backed militia responsible for Jordan attacks</strong></h2>

<p>Amid the deteriorating situation in the Middle East, the White House also blamed an Iran-backed militia group for the drone attack on Al-Tanf, a US military site&nbsp;in Jordan, earlier this week.&nbsp;</p>

<p>National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said US intelligence believed&nbsp;the Islamic Resistance in Iraq was responsible for the attack that killed three soldiers and injured 40.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The verdict comes after eight others had already pleaded guilty to charges over the incident when hundreds of protesters besieged Hong Kong's Legislative Council building on July 1, 2019.</p>

<p>The incursion into the seat of government for the Chinese Special Administrative Region followed a protest march against a proposed extradition bill that would have allowed authorities to send individuals to mainland China for trial.</p>

<p>District Court Judge Li Chi-ho found four people including Ho Chun-yin, actor Gregory Wong, Ng Chi-yung and Lam Kam-kwan guilty of rioting. Ho, who suffers from mild intellectual disability, cried inside the courtroom after the verdict was read.</p>

<p>Lam was also convicted of criminal damage, while reporters Wong Ka-ho and Ma Kai-chung were acquitted of rioting but found guilty of "entering or staying in the precincts of the chamber".</p>

<p>Judge Li wrote in a verdict that he did not deny that Wong Ka-ho and Ma Kai-chung were reporting, but disagreed with their belief that reporters could stay and record the incident.</p>

<p>During the trial, Gregory Wong told the court he entered the legislative council solely to deliver two chargers to reporters who were covering the break-in by protesters.</p>

<p>Another defendant, Lam Kam-kwan, told the court he was detained in China in August 2019 following the storming of Legco during which he was forced to write a repentance letter.</p>

<p>Three Hong Kong police officers met him in Shenzhen and said he had to cooperate or else he would not be able to return to Hong Kong. Police officers denied his claims during a cross-examination by the defence.</p>

<p>Eight people who earlier plead guilty to rioting included the former president of the University of Hong Kong's student union, Althea Suen, and pro-democracy activists Ventus Lau and Owen Chow.</p>
